Elder statesman indulges in fantasy

I bought this book on a recent trip to Delhi and found it vaguely fascinating. I couldn't believe that one of Indias most respected writers, historians and political thinkers was indulging in erotic fantasy.
Mohan Kumar is a middle aged divorcee who embarks on an erotic odyssey. The book is probably quite accurate with regard to the social mores inherent in middle class Indian society which dictate that sexual relationships with unattached contemporaries of similar social standing are largely taboo.
Poor Kumar has to resort to advertisements in national newspapers to recruit live-in companions who will be handsomely remunerated for their services ( By Indian standards )
Kumar's relationships with a veritable range of Indian women from different parts of the subcontinent are initially fulfilling but lead ultimately to disappointment.
As the protagonist who brings women to his luxurious lair one may get the feeling that he uses women.But a closer examination of the individual encounters leaves one with the feeling that it is Kumar who is being exploited by the womenfolk in question, mainly for money and sex.
Eventually, there is a salutory lesson on the risks of unprotected sex, certainly timely in the context of Indias ever burgeoning problems with HIV.
The narrative uses some interesting devices in terms of switching from the first person to the third person and flits niftily from one period of Kumars life to another.
The book also provides familiar insights into every day life in Delhi for those familiar with this sprawling and increasingly exciting Indian metropolis

Ignore the other reviews! This is another good read from Khushwant Singh

Please ignore other reviews that only focus on the "promiscuity" of the protagonist. Nor is the protagonists end a just punishment for his bad deeds.

Other than Mohan Kumar's wife and the women at college, all of whom he had sex with, he felt real love and regard for the last three "arrangements" of companionship with sex. He gave freely and was given generously in return, not just sex, but friendship, appreciation, and love.

His affections for each of these women were incongruent with his belief that he needed to have many women and could not be satisfied by one. He stayed monogamous with them. The relationships ended because of practicalities. While marriage was out of the question for any of themhis sadness after departure, especially for Molly and Sue, indicated a need for something greater. But it seemed they all shared the belief that whatever they shared with each other, it would end if marriage were to enter the arrangement.

The author writes that these may be his fantasies, but the book was much more.

And by the end, I realized that Singh, for his age, wrote a remarkably thoughtful book, speaking to the culture and attitudes toward sex, the prevalence, yet shame of casual sex, a place for casual sex in some people's lives, especially for women to whom society would not be very forgiving for their simple need of companionship and satisfying sex life outside of marriage, when married life had failed them in so many deeper ways. It also touches on the ways women are introduced to sex, which is commonly through elder male relatives... such is also the case for young boys in India subcontinent, for whom it's elder female relations.

Also, for Singh's age, he writes this detailed story of a good man, in need of sexual satisfaction, but who is not a caricature of a womanizer. There's depth and kindness to the character, that may not be as easily found in real life.

The book often mentioned Mohan's lack of use of a condom, and I often thought it was the writer's oversight or the writers unwillingness to address the need for condoms. There was several mentions of need for condoms, pills, or nasbandi that would avoid pregnancy. Each time I though how typical it is that desis, and non, tend to think that is the only thing they need to worry about. At least pregnancy is not terminal! Many who talk about condom use do so in terms of preventing pregnancy... similar to the focus on women's contraception, such as the pill, diaphragm, or IUD.

And then also for Singh's age, he takes this entire story, without any social commentary on STDs and safe sex, ends the story with Mohan contracting HIV. The HIV diognosis and Mohan's decision that follows ends the story and was the smallest part of the story. And yet, the issue. was always there everytime he had sex without a condom, which was mentioned in passing in various contexts.

I don't think Singh was telling a moral story about sex leading to HIV. I think it was about the shame around sex, especially as represented by the wife and her misgivings about it, and the lack of openness that ultimately prevents real education and understanding of today's realities around sex... HIV and other venereal diseases are a real concern for Indians. And few know about it or consider it.

So ignore reviews who are just stuck on some of the detailed sexual encounters.

fantasies of an old fossil

Khushwant Singh occupies a special place in Indian writing because of his verstality and readibility. However with this book he would be losing a fair share of his fans. The reason: Bad, unerotic writing. This book is about the sex life of a MR Mohan Kumar, and in reality about the sexual fantasies of Mr Khushwant Singh. Yet while it does have the simplicity of a typical Singh product, it does not seem very beliveble. PArts of it seem inspired by Richard Crasta and others by a typical Mastram book. One wishes Khuswant should not have tried to write a sexy book. For sex stories only become erotic if sex is incidental tot he story and presented ina holistic manner. Out here there are dollops of it, but not very enticing ! Mr singh give us a better product next time. Remember u wrote Train to Pakistan once....

Regency England was, according to Venetia Murray, a "glorious paradox": High society placed a premium on civilized living, yet vulgarity, gluttony, and moral vicissitude were considered fashionable--and socially acceptable--vices. In An Elegant Madness, Murray examines this polarity, providing readers with an accurate, entertaining, easy-to-read portrayal that conveys the mood of the period, focusing primarily on the oft-paradoxical social practices and attitudes of the English aristocracy.

Generally understood as a 50-year period beginning, as with the French Revolution, just before the dawn of the 19th century, Regency England (or, more precisely, its uppermost stata) remained, in many ways, oblivious to and safely distanced from the ravages of the Napoleonic Wars consuming the continent. The tone of society, according to Murray, tends to be set by its titular head; thus, the paradox and political detachment of the Regency Period emanated primarily from its leader, the Prince Regent. The carefree Regent, who would reign as King George IV from 1820 to 1830, was known not only as "The First Gentleman of Europe," but also as a dedicated hedonist, drunkard, and lecher. Elegance and vulgarity characterized the rest of the English aristocracy, as well, and Murray's chapters clearly illustrate how Regency high society appropriated for itself the same duality as their leader's. In 13 well-researched chapters studded with excerpts from letters, diaries, journals and memoirs, Murray offers a lively portrait of upper-class life during a time marked by "elegance and style which are unique in the history of English culture." The influx of thousands of aristocratic refugees from the French Revolution spurred a frenzied embrace of French fashions, as well as the Prince Regent's ostentatious style, and transformed England during those 50 tumultuous years. Meanwhile, support of the Napoleonic war and the effects of the Industrial Revolution led to economic chaos: "in some cases rents were increased five-fold between 1790 and 1830." Murray (Castle Howard: The Life and Times of a Stately Home. o.p.) writes a solidly researched summary of the aristocracy of Regency England, which she dates from the French Revolution to the coming of Reform. Courtesans, dandies, scholars, and dissolute members of the royal family are described in detail. Murray deliberately ignores the underclass and focuses on the cream of the elite, the ton, giving prominent mention to the leading women of the period, including royal mistresses and the courtesans kept by the elite. Her work includes copious quotations, excellent period illustrations, and a good bibliography, though she assumes more grasp of the period than most Americans are likely to have. Shockingly bad research and full of errors

While very interesting and raising some interesting points Venetia Murray's book "An Elegant Madness" is shockingly badly researched and very sloppily edited. Do not rely on this book if you are not familiar with the Regency period - and do not quote from this book as truth, always use a secondary source to back up anything read in this book.
Errors are continually repeated.
She seems to have a permanant state of confusion with the Spencer (Earl Spencer) family and the Cavendish family (the Duke's of Devonshire). The 1st Earl Spencer had two daughters, Georgiana and Henrietta. Georgiana married the 5th Duke of Devonshire and had two daughters, Georgiana and Harriet. Murray consistently and continually confuses these two generations and families despite listing seven separate books on the family in her bibliography and a number of other associated books that would provide information on them. I am starting to wonder if she read the books at all - if she read that many surely she wouldn't have made those mistakes.
She calls the Marquis of Queensbury "Old Q" in fact, 'Old Q' was the Duke of Queensbury, a completely different person.
Her description of Beau Brummell is based on entirely apocryphal and disproved events. She places their first meeting on a salacious and since disproved story by Captain Gronow. She says that the Prince and Brummell fell out at an event in 1814 when Brummell insulted the Prince by asking his companion, "Who is your far friend'. This was not the case. Not only did this even actually occur a year earlier in 1813, but it was probably at least a year after the Prince and Brummell fell out. She also fails to show the influence of Brummell on clothing. She says his dress was 'leather breeches for daytime' in actual fact this was the common dress in the 1790's and not at all what Brummell introduced. No one was admitted into his dressing room either - they were entertained in his drawing room while he put on his neck cloths in the dressing room next door with the doors open.
She misdates the arrival of gas in London as 1816 - it came in 1808 and was in common use by 1815.
She continually misnames people - Lord William Pitt-Lennox for the Duke of Richmonds son Lord William Lennox. She calls James Wedderburn Webster, James Webster Wedderburn.
She confuses the Duke of Kent's mutiny in Gibralter (undated in her book but occuring in 1802) with a mutinous incident a few years earlier in Canada. She also says the Duke sentenced the man to 900 lashes, it was actually 999. But the mutiny in Gibralter was not over his cruelty, it was over his excessive regulations which prevented the men from drinking on Christmas Day.
She blandly uses 'after the war' as a statement - but doesn't state what war - one must assume she means after Waterloo. In which case it would be after the 'wars'. Given that the Napoleonic Wars dominated all but a few years of the 1788-1830 she chooses as the scope for her book she has almost no information of the effect of these wars on the country.
She quotes many things out of context to - the list of her errors, omissions and flat out misconstructions could go on.
Frankly while I am interested in much of the information she brings up, those things that I know about or have researched further have shown that she has very little discipline either in her note taking or her ability to put it into its correct context.
She jumps around her chosen 50 year period with little regard to the development of society, London or social mores. So she states with certainty it was a violent age and people were mugged etc. Yet the difference in London in the 1780's when people were robbed in the carriages in broad daylight in London streets, and in 1810 when this was extremely uncommon, is not developed at all.
It is not like Murray has put new interpretations on facts - she has taken too many events and given them incorrect dates, people or information.
This is an exceptionally sloppy book, littered with errors and should be read with extreme caution. I have only listed some of the errors in the book here.

Entertaining but far from accurate

Why does this book have such contradictory reviews from newspapers and magazines, compared to some of the readers? I read this book last year, and again this year when I finally decided to acquire my own copy despite all the problems I had with the book.
Firstly, this book is indeed entertaining, with some very good sketches and with lots of interesting little snippets about the lives of the richest and noblest members of British society in the first decades of the 19th century. It makes for a good read from that point of view, especially if you are more interested in the feel of how the "ton" or high society lived than in historical accuracy.
The book is not meant to be a history of the entire Regency period, and nor is it meant to be a political history. On the other hand, I would have liked to have seen a little more reference to the major political figures of the day, given that politics was as important as economics to the aristocrats of the Regency period - even if they often chose to ignore both. It is certainly a pity that there is little discussion of the Prince Regent's association with Fox and the Whigs, or for that matter on what was happening politically. Even for a mostly social history of the elite, the omission of some major political events and trends is surprising.
I do have the same problems with the book that have been so elegantly expressed by others. One of the things that shocked me was that Miss Murray claimed to have done all her research with first-hand sources and in fact thanks the staff at the Windsor Castle library and so forth. The second thing that shocked me even more were the enconiums paid her by several eminent personages who should have noted some of the problems. Yes, she collected a vast array of data and an equally vast stock of anecdote and wove them into a light-hearted look at the Regency era. But all the same, she makes some remarkable mistakes for someone who claims to have done all her research.
I found the index to be very frustrating, because everytime I tried to look up someone, that reference was useless. Someone obviously slipped up here. The author's references to peers and peeresses were also frequently inaccurate. It may be pedantic of me to demand that she correctly identify a certain peer as Lord Yarmouth as the heir of the 2nd Marquess of Hertford. But for those not conversant with the peerage (and even for some who are), such explanations are vital. I also find it frustrating when an author casually mixes up two countesses of Jersey who are mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, with the elder being the royal mistress and the younger being the noted society hostess and arbiter of fashion. Finally, in a book so strewn with names and references to this peer and that, an appendix with a list of the main personages who are mentioned in the book would have helped greatly. [Or a detailed index]. For a good example of both, see the recent collection of the Churchill letters edited by his daughter Mary Soames.
What are the merits of this book? First, it is easy reading. Second, it is still in print and relatively inexpensive. Third, it includes several anecdotes about various peers, aristocratic ladies, and courtesans which certainly makes for interesting reading. On the other hand, it is not the book to read if you really want to understand what was going on in high society or for that matter in the rest of English society. Some other reviewers have recommended Stella Margetson, but her books are not easy to locate outside large university libraries. J.B. Priestly's The Prince of Pleasure (not the eponymous Saul David book) is a good start but there are probably even better books. For the gossip, I strongly recommend the originals (Creevey, Gronow, Greville and so forth), if you have the interest and the patience. Why not get the gossip from the source after all?

Check the Sources - this book is alarmingly bad

Wow - this book as elicited quite a few reviews hasn't it? I was really interested in reading it as I love this period, but I read the reviews here carefully and wondered about the seeming huge polarity in popularity of the book.
I didn't really know much about the Regency times and would have quite happily accepted the rave reviews - it is after all a pretty book. I was very interested in the detail in some of the reviews here which cited specific problems with Murray's sources - so I checked out the books. Its pretty easy to get hold of Roger Fulford's book "the Royal Dukes" - which Murray says she used as a source for her book - and lo and behold she has misrepresented events.
I then had a look at the a few Brummell biographies in my library including the one she has in her bibliography - and again - Murray misrepresented and misdated events.
What other events has she misdated or mis-represented in this book? I guess I could continue looking - but I have since thrown the book out in disgust.
I guess I just prefer authors who are accurate.

Here today, gone tomorrow.

"One minute everything was normal, and then it was gone." This is a first person account of life after a nuclear holocaust. The narrator is an English boy called Danny. He recounts all the things that have happened to him since the holocaust and the grim struggle that life has become. This is a good book because it is written by someone who actually experienced what happened. The narrator makes each day feel tense and uncertain. Danny's life is grim, insecure and torturous.
One of the interesting things about this book are the invented names used to describe the various species of survivor: "Goths", "Spacers", "Terminals", "Badgers" and "Purples". It's the beginning of a new language.
Grief and despair pervade this book. Nuclear weapons have utterly destroyed civilization, England has been turned into a poisonous, desolate wasteland. The narrator has written this account to warn future generations (if any) not to do it again.
When you finish reading "Brother in the Land" read "Riddley Walker" by Russell Hoban. That book is also a first person account by a boy in post-holocaust England. Set thousands of years in the future, the people live a primitive life with dim legends of the world as we know it.

A sad tale about life after the bomb.

Brother in the Land is a novella about the lives of two English brothers after World War III and the effects it has on their lives, the community and the bleak future. Danny is a teenage boy who's World comes to an end when the missiles fall. Confusion and frustration cloud the youngster's mind as he finds himself in an unimaginable and hellish situation. But that is nothing compared to the doom of the impending fallout and harsh winter along with starvation staring at him in the face. What is an English kid gonna do when his life is changed forever?

A found this book so dark, dreary and heartbreaking. But it was entertaining and I wanted to read the entire book in one sitting. Unlike some books that I read, I felt for the characters and sympathized with their situation (even though they were English). Human suffering and it's condition knows no borders. I really enjoyed the book, my only complaint is that I wished it was longer and more in depth. But then I realize that it would even be more depressing. If you are a fan of the nuclear war or post apocalyptic genre then I highly suggest that you find a copy. I wish this book was more widely available. Too bad a lot of these books are out of print.

This book scarred me for life.

I read this book when I was 11 years old. BIG mistake. I had nightmares from it and I couldn't stop crying. So part of me wants to give it 1 star. But it is actually a very good book. It really brings home to you the consequences of nuclear war, especially long-term effects like radiation sickness. I recommend it to people who don't mind a depressing read or who are interested in dystopian novels, but don't read it if you're soft-hearted, or if you're already frightened about the topic. It will just make you worse.

The surreal Sharpe

This is the odd man out in the series (so far), which is a nice change. For much of the novel, Sharpe is out of the army, without Harper or Hogan, and on the run, trying to clear his name and win back his officer's commission.
The scene where Sharpe rescues his lover, a onetime French spy, from a nunnery is the funniest writing in the series so far (eight books and counting). And when a fortuitous explosion frees him from the French, the description of Sharpe wandering away, drunken and dazed, from the burning castle is surreal.
For anyone who thinks Sharpe is a one-dimensional hero character, Sharpe's Honor shows Sharpe's many weaknesses: his inability to sidestep a ruinous challenge to his honor; his blind obsession with a woman who is at best, fickle, at worst, treacherous; his destructive self-pity.
This novel concentrates on the interior worlds of Sharpe and other characters more than earlier books have. It's illuminating to see the battle of Vittoria from so many viewpoints. And Cornwell continues to show that truth is stranger than fiction by taking incidents that really happened, such as the bizarre looting of the French baggage train, and weaving them into the story.
Sharpe's Honor is another strong entry in the series.

A Good Story and Loads of Fun

Sharpe's Honor by Bernard Cornwell is an exciting adventure story. Please note spoilers as follows. Major Sharpe is challenged to a duel by a Spanish General and is nearly hanged for his trouble. Later in order to exonerate himself he attempts to capture his accuser, the conniving and beautiful La Puta Durada. La Puta Durada (one of the neatest names in fiction) which means the golden whore, can vouch for Sharpe's innocence. Along the way he meets a psychopathic partisan named The Slaughterer, a malignant priest who wants to restore the inquisition, and Major Ducos a French spy-master. Even though there was plenty of adventure, I missed some of the minor characters, Major Hogan and Sargent Harper are practically no shows. I admit that this story does not measure up to the others in the Sharpe series. "Sharpe's Company", "Sharpe's Gold" or "Sharpe's Rifles" are better entries in the series and more exciting to read. However, "Sharpe's Honor" has its moments. The battle scenes are very realistic and surprisingly enough we are treated to more battle strategy. Normally in Cornwell's Sharpe books the point of view is from the main character Sharpe, but this time we are given several points of view of the battle and one of them (refreshingly enough) from the French side. But I must warn you the battle happens very late in the story and by then most of the plot lines have been resolved. One interesting item in the story is the prevailing theme that Sharpe should have no honor. Primarily because Sharpe came up from the ranks (starting out as a private and working up to a commissioned officer). The only one who thought Sharpe had any honor is Sharpe himself. "Sharpe's Honor" is fun and a good read.

Irresistible Lust, Pride, Greed, and Treachery Threaten Sharpe's Honor

Major Richard Sharpe is a living legend to the British Army, but he finds that others don't see him as even honorable. Not knowing the Biblical advice above, he takes it personally . . . and digs a deep hole for himself.

With the death of Sharpe's wife at the end of Sharpe's Enemy, the series was bound to take a new turn in the 16th book in the chronological order of events. It's a u-turn back toward the alluring charms of La Marquesa, the blond French spy whose treacherous wiles Sharpe cannot resist. Sharpe also has problems with temptations concerning his honor. Other men are even weaker when it comes to pride and greed in this entertaining look at the narrow line between doing the right thing and going off the rails.

Sharpe's Honor nicely balances several story lines that will entertain you:

1. The battle of Vitoria, one of the most important conflicts in the Peninsular Wars.

2. A French scheme to divide Spain from the British.

3. An act of revenge aimed by Pierre Ducos at Sharpe for breaking his glasses.

4. An attempt to re-institute the Spanish Inquisition.

5. A lust story involving Sharpe and the woman known as the Golden (lady who makes herself available to all comers).

6. A fascinating look at greed from several different several dimensions.

7. Sharpe's developing sense of self-worth. Now that he's a major, he sees himself differently from before . . . and wants to be better than his betters.

8. Deadly hand-to-hand combat.

Mr. Cornwell also mixes up his writing style. There are the usual sequences of blood-and-guts, but he also has some of the best comedy writing in the entire series. The mood shifts from deadly serious (almost depressing) to frivolous hilarity. These modulations in style and mood make this book much more entertaining than it otherwise would have been.

Other than the specific events involving what Sharpe does, the rest of the story is well connected to the actual events that occurred. As a result, the book provides more fascination than a mere fiction tail disconnected form history would.

What Lies Beneath

First published in 1799, Charles Brockden Brown's novel, "Edgar Huntly" is an insane masterpiece. I love Brown. I read this novel for the first time a few years ago, and thought it was about time to refresh my memory. Set outside of Philadelphia in the final years of the 1780's, "Edgar Huntly," like other of Brown's works, test the new American republic's capacity to govern while balancing the needs and desires of its culturally disparate inhabitants.
The novel is purportedly a correspondence from the protagonist, Edgar Huntly, to his friend/love interest, Mary Waldegrave, in the aftermath of her brother's death. Edgar is an educated, refined, enlightened young man, disconsolate upon the death of his friend. An avid walker, Edgar frequently leaves the environs of his hometown, Solebury, returning to the scene of his friend's death, a large elm tree. Near this tree late one evening, he spots a man, conspicuously lurking, burying something beneath the tree. Suspecting this man, Clithero, of Waldegrave's murder, Edgar begins a career of surveillance and tracking, following Clithero to his residence and through the uncharted wildernesses that border his hometown. What follows is Edgar's progress in discovering the truths behind the death of Waldegrave, the history of Clithero, and the foundations of his own self-control and rationality.
Brown deals with a number of issues throughout the novel current to late 18th century America, including the dispossession of Native Americans from their land, Irish immigration, and the instability of a newly formed nation. Philosophically, Brown examines popular 18th century debates over the limits of sympathy, and the ability of sense, experiment, and observation to conclusively explain human nature. In his preface to the novel, Brown says that his novel will not exploit the then-common motifs of gothic fiction. Perhaps, but Brown, taking the example of William Godwin, moves the castles, dungeons, and murders of traditional gothic into the psyches of his characters. Dementia, paranoia, and in this novel, at least, the uncontrollability of sleep-walking, constitute the largely internal threats to personal and national safety.
So join Edgar, Clithero, Sarsefield, the Lorimers, Inglefield, Queen Mab, and an army of hostile natives, on an intricate, often horrifying romp through late 18th century America. Brown's doubts and fears about living in the new nation will entrance and mortify you, and possibly make you consider putting yourself in restraints before you go to bed at night.

Another masterpiece overlooked...

This book is truly one of the most interesting and purely entertaining books I've ever read. The creepy imagery of the sleepwalking man digging in the street and then the caves and indians will stick with me forever. What an amazingly creative man. An x-files-esque dreamer living in the 1790s.

Brockden Brown's Twisted Imagination

This novel is an excellent journey through the dark, disturbing wilderness of 18th century America and its dangers. The wars that raged between Natives and their oppressors (the English) are here brutally portrayed. With a new introduction to English literature of the effects of sleepwalking, this is also a journey through the psychology of a psychotic sleepwalker, and the devils that haunt him. An excellent read for those searching for the natural horror of humanity, with a little suggestion of the supernatural, though very heavy both in language, and symbolism and metaphor. A tough read, but well worth it.

Grade 4-8 In this novel, Yolen attempts to answer those who question why the Holocaust should be remembered. Hannah, 12, is tired of remembering, and is embarrassed by her grandfather, who rants and raves at the mention of the Nazis. Her mother's explanations of how her grandparents and great-aunt lost all family and friends during that time have little effect. Then, during a Passover Seder, Hannah is chosen to open the door to welcome the prophet Elijah. As she does so, she is transported to a village in Poland in the 1940s, where everyone thinks that she is Chaya, who has just recovered from a serious illness. She is captured by the Nazis and taken to a death camp, where she is befriended by a young girl named Rivka, who teaches her how to fight the dehumanizing processes of the camp and hold onto her identity. When at last their luck runs out and Rivka is chosen, Hannah/Chaya, in an almost impulsive act of self-sacrifice, goes in her stead. As the door to the gas chamber closes behind her, she is returned to the door of her grandparents' apartment, waiting for Elijah. Through Hannah, with her memories of the present and the past, Yolen does a fine job of illustrating the importance of remembering. A Touching Novel Showing The Best And Worst Of Man

"Who, who are those men in black suits blocking our wedding," Fayge exclaimed. Chaya yelled,"They're Nazis. Nazis! They will kill six million Jews! Don't you understand we have to run!" All the people including the Rabbi thought Chaya (Hannah) was crazy, but she knew it was just a matter of time until they soon found out the truth. Hannah, in the book The Devil's Arithmetic; is an ordinary girl living in the present day, but when she goes to her grandfather's house she has a strange experience. As she opens the door for the prophet Elijah, she looks foward and finds herself in another time zone. She looks back into the house and sees all of her family members with an elegant and delicious meal on the table. Curious about what was on the other side of the door, she steps out and realizes that she is in the time right before the Holocaust. She is no longer Hannah; she is Chaya, and she is about to embark on a terrifying journey to a concentration camp. The author of this book, Jane Yolen, shows that she has a great talent in writing books that deeply touch your emotions. The content of the book is a great source of history as well as a story filled with morals about life and the human race. Most of the book is written in the form of conversations. This kind of writing style helps the reader really understand the character's feelings and thoughts. In addition, Jane Yolen uses the triple period often, which ;eaves the reader's mind open as to what the character was going to say. Her writing is extremely desriptive, and the detail she includes makes it possible for the reader to imagine the setting. Overall, I think Jane Yolen is a great, and superb writer. I think The Devil's Arithmetic is definitely A Newberry Award winning book. It shows every aspect of being a perfect literary book, including moving content, accurate historical information, desripive vocabulary, and a plot that keeps your attention until the very end. Therefore, I would definitely recommend this book. If you want to know what happens to Chaya, you should read this book. Another reason you should absolutely read this book is because it gives the history of the Holocaust in a unique way. Most importantly it tells how Jews struggled from the best of times to the worst of times.

Great Read

This is an excellent story to introduce and teach children the awfulness of the holocaust. A young Jewish girl doesn't see the point in 'remembering' about her family's horrible past but gets swept back in time to relive part of it as her grandmother's best friend in a concentration camp. The movie is a nice addition after you've read the book but changes the young girl to a teen.

Disappointed in Michigan

I was extremely disappointed with this book. Most of the items are photographed in back and white and in large groups, which makes it nearly impossible to identify items using these photos as references. I wouldn't recommend it for identification purposes.

There is no guessing if this is your antique by the written desription, there is a picture to be certain.

In 1845 Henry David Thoreau left the town and headed to the countryside. There, beside the lake of Walden, he built himself a simple log cabin and returned to nature. In this perceptive and sometimes moving narration, we hear Thoreau's deeply personal reaction against the commercialism and materialism of mid-nineteenth century America. A warning from the past which is more than valid today. "If a man does not keep pace with his Companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer." Let's hope so, and that there are more Thoreau's out there today. If not, then this audiobook may go some way to inspiring them. --Bukowski on Bukowski zine

Self Help At Its Best

This is one of the most influential books in American history. I picked it up for the first time in thirty years only to realize that Throreau's philosophy had long ago permeated my being. I remember being blown away by my first reading more than half a century ago, but with each immersion new depths are achieved.

Thoreau sought both authenticity and simplicity in his life. He never abandoned Concord and the real world but merely sought refuge at Walden to plumb the depths of his being. Serious introspection and brilliant writing show each of us the the way to our own core. Can we stand the examination? That is for each of us to determine.

The Transcendentalists may never have been able to define their philosphy, but what remains of it more than a century after the movement's passing can be summed up in Thoreau's always upbeat outlook of "...if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet success unexpected in common hours."

One cannot read Walden without gaining confidence in one's ability to change direction in life and optimism about the future. We do not have to live lives of conformity and quiet desparation. "In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high."

There has never been a book that better expresses American optimism, and there is no reason for us to lose confidence now. Simplify and be as close to authentic as you can be and all will turn out well. Oh, and while you're at it question authority.

If there could be a six star book, this would be my candidate.

Reflecting Pond

Walden, what is it? Is it a book on nature, a book on ecology, a book on human nature, a prescient description of the struggle between modern civilization and the land that nurtured it, a critique of mankind, a string of quotable gems, an account of a mind, or, like Star Wars, a way of slipping a deep and human spirituality into someone else's mind without their recognizing it? It depends on who is doing the reading and when. Read it for any of these purposes, and it will not disappoint. If you've never read it, read it. If you read it for class years ago and hated it, read it again. This may be the most subtle, multi-layered and carefully worked piece of literature you'll ever find. By keeping the down-to-earth tone (no doubt in reaction to the high-flying prose of his friend, R.W. Emerson) Thoreau pulls a Columbo, and fools us into thinking he's writing simply about observing nature, living in a cabin, or sounding a pond. Somehow by the end of Walden, however, you may find it is your self he has sounded. People have accused Thoreau of despising mankind, but read deeper and you will discover he loved people well enough to chide us, show us our faults (admitting he's as bad as the worst of us), and give to all of us this wonderful gift, a book you could base your life on. There is more day to dawn, he reminds us at the end: the sun is but a morning star.

The negative reviews here are frighteningly revealing

As a professor of philosophy, I at one time regularly took classes of first year college students to Concord for a week-long intensive seminar on Emerson and Thoreau. I eventually abandoned the seminar, because I discovered that each class was progressively more hostile to what these two wonderful persons stood for. The ..... reviews written by young people of this edition of _Walden_ are, then, disconcertingly familiar to me. I obviously disagree with their evaluations of the book and of Thoreau's character. But what's interesting is why they have such a negative reaction to a book written, as Thoreau says, for young people who haven't yet been corrupted by society. What is it about the culture in which we live that encourages such hostility to his eloquent plea for simplicity? It's too facile to suggest that the backlash is motivated only by resentful pique at what's seen as Thoreau's condemnation of contemporary lifestyles, although I suspect this is part of the explanation. I'd be interested in reading the thoughts here of other readers who are likewise puzzled and disturbed by "Generation Y's" negative response to Thoreau.
