"A lot. A lot. A lot to do."
By East19
We inherited this book and read it frequently to my now-teenagers.
I just fondly bought one to send to my four year old nephew.
Each page is wonderfully illustrated with pre-September activities to undertake in preparation for school.
We read this book especially every August, as Harry's excitement and jitters are easy to identify with.
Plus even now, with my youngest aged 13, during busy times, one of us will happily chant that we have:
"a lot--- a lot--- a lot to do."

Fiasco: The Inside Story of a Wall Street Trader, by Frank Partnoy

FIASCO is the shocking story of one man's education in the jungles of Wall Street. As a young derivatives salesman at Morgan Stanley, Frank Partnoy learned to buy and sell billions of dollars worth of securities that were so complex many traders themselves didn't understand them. In his behind-the-scenes look at the trading floor and the offices of one of the world's top investment firms, Partnoy recounts the macho attitudes and fiercely competitive ploys of his office mates. And he takes us to the annual drunken skeet-shooting competition, FIASCO, where he and his colleagues sharpen the killer instincts they are encouraged to use against their competitiors, their clients, and each other.

FIASCO is the first book to take on the derivatves trading industry?the most highly charged and risky sector of the stock market. More importantly, it is a blistering indictment of the largely unregulated market in derivatives and serves as a warning to unwary investors about real fiascos, which have cost billions of dollars.

A Few good parts, A Few bad ones, Overall worth reading
By Amazon Customer
There are several very interesting parts of this book, the most notable being the chapters (4, 7 - 10) in which Mr. Partnoy gives a high level description of some of the transactions that he was involved in. Some of his anecdotes, particularly those in which he discusses the atmosphere in an investment bank around bonus time (pg.40 - 42, 202 - 205), are pretty amusing and dead on accurate. The author's descriptions of some of his deals are clearly told from a junior banker's perspective, but they do a good job of putting forth what was being done, how it was being done, what everyone's perceived incentives for the transaction were, the work required to get the deal done, what kind of money, and importantly what kind of fees were involved. In this regard, the book offers more than both "Liar's Poker" by Lewis and "When Genius Failed" by Lowenstein.
Like all books written by former investment bankers the book contains liberally sprinkled anecdotes regarding job interviews from hell, the ridiculous daily escapades that can occur on a trading floor, strip clubs, the lack of personal lives, gambling trips and other stories which could easily have been pulled from the pages of Mr. Lewis's book or "Monkey Business" by Rolfe and Troob. All of these shenanigans culminate around the bank's (in this case Morgan Stanley), or more specifically, his group's annual sporting clay outing, FIASCO. The book also suffers from a somewhat poorly defined timeline and the lack of a defining event which drives the story. Due to these faults, it is at times little more than a book about the evils of investment bankers, the ignorance of their customers, all put forward to enforce Mr. Partnoy's somewhat guarded thesis; Derivatives are used by organizations that are legally prevented from investing in certain areas in order to skirt those laws.
This is a good book that could have been better, the occasions where it shine through make it worth reading, but also unfortunately let us know the author could have produced a somewhat better product.

The funniest, most enjoyable book I've read in a long time
By Tim Triche, Jr. (jabbo@yahoo.com)
My younger brother has decided that business is highly amusing, and after reading this book of his, I have to agree. A while back, I picked up and studied a mathematical book on finance (_Investment Science_, by Luenberger, if you're interested; quite good) that covered pricing, immunization strategies, lattices, the Black-Scholes equation for options valuation, and other aspects of modern finance. So I had a decent feel for what derivatives *are* prior to reading this book. However...
I can't remember the last time I laughed out loud at a book on such an ostensibly dry subject. Partnoy has an amazingly dry, amoral, detached style of narration that only adds to the surreal quality of the book. He is a gifted writer; I plowed through this absorbing read in the course of a little over a day. I have since started simply buying copies for my friends, since my original strategy of buying one floating copy has failed -- it never returned.
Especially if you are investing for yourself, but even if you are just looking for an engrossing book to pass the time, buy a copy of this book and give it to a friend when you're done. It's hysterical, disturbing, unsettling, and superb.

Supercharged, Super Leveraged and Super Lethal
By Kevin Kingston
I love starting a review with a few memorable quotes because if you read the book the quotes will bring it all back no matter how long its been since you read it, and if you did not read the book and are intrigued by the quotes you'll buy it on the spot (at least I do). So here it goes:

Pg. 126 Frank quotes Warren Buffett, "If you don't know who the sucker is, it is you".

Pg. 130 Quoting another bond salesman, "Let me tell you something, If a bond can not be sold with two hockey tickets and a good bottle of wine, the bond can not be sold"

Pg. 176 "The involvement of European issuers seemed fitting. The first active derivatives market had opened in Europe in 1688, when traders on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange began writing derivative contracts...Derivatives were returning home"

Pg. 182 Talking about Mexican Banks, "They craved risk...they wanted to gamble. They wanted, they demanded, "leverage"-the ability to borrow to take on greater risk"

Pg 205 "Out of curiosity I asked everyone what other jobs they would be willing to take instead of their current jobs at Morgan Stanley if the pay remained the same...Would you rather work at McDonalds or at Morgan Stanley? For the same pay - McDonalds, without a doubt...Shoveling manure or Morgan Stanley? Manure sounded pretty good to everyone."

Pg 226 Talking about packaging a product for the purpose of creating an illusion of a gain, which happens to create the largest fee's ever ($75 million), "Of the $571 million, the investor immediately realized a huge gain, roughly $400 million."

- This was a totally smoke and mirrors gain done strictly for the purpose beefing up returns.

Pg. 247 At the end of his 3 year stint on the Street, "I now believed everything was a fraud, and I had a well founded basis for my beliefs. Derivatives were a fraud, investment banking was a fraud, the Mexican and the Japanese financial systems were frauds..."

Epilogue Pg 251 "What lessons did I draw from my experience selling derivatives? I believe derivatives are the most recent example in the history of finance: Wall Street bilks Main St."

Pg 252 "Could a $70,000-a-year Securities and Exchange Commission investigator ever catch a $700,000-a-year derivatives salesman?"

Pg. 256 "70% of derivatives professionals say they expect big losses in the coming year"

Pg 277 "If the SEC and the U.S. Attorney's office are busy prosecuting basic cases-insider trading, the mafia selling non-existent stocks-how can they possibly compete against the big boys, especially when the big boys are tucked away in Grand Cayman, protected by special tax legislation, insulated from disclosure requirements and hidden from the public view with a P.O. Box address?"

Charlie Munger, who is Warren Buffets partner in Berkshire Hathaway recommends this book highly. (See my other reviews and my blog for a complete list of his recommendations ( bloglines.com/blog/KevinKingston ). This book gives you a great understanding of the products that Wall Street firms are putting together and the reasons they are doing it. For example a LIBOR-Cubed Hedge and other supercharged, super leveraged and super dangerous, for those that don't understand them, which is most people. It also describes the frequency that even the packager, Morgan Stanley could not put a value on the complex derivative products.

Amazon.com Review
Pippi is an irrepressible, irreverent, and irrefutably delightful girl who lives alone (with a monkey) in her wacky house, Villa Villekulla. When she's not dancing with the burglars who were just trying to rob her house, she's attempting to learn the "pluttification" tables at school; fighting Adolf, the strongest man in the world at the circus; or playing tag with police officers. Pippi's high-spirited, good-natured hijinks cause as much trouble as fun, but a more generous child you won't find anywhere.

Astrid Lindgren has created a unique and lovable character, inspiring generations of children to want to be Pippi. More than anything, Pippi makes reading a pleasure; no child will welcome the end of the book, and many will return to Pippi Longstocking again and again. Simply put, Pippi is irresistible. (Ages 9 to 12)

Review
"A rollicking story of Pippi who lives without any grownups in a little house at the edge of the village. The matter-of-fact way in which her absurd adventures are related is one of the chief charms of this story."

Pip pip and tarry ho!
By E. R. Bird
To my mind, Pippi Longstocking is perhaps the world's first child superhero. Able to lift strong policemen with her bare hands! Capable of climbing tall houses and trees with virtually no effort at all! Rescuing children from burning buildings and adults from snobby talk! If, like myself, you were a child of the 1980s then your first exposure to Miss Longstocking probably came in the form of that gawdawful movie circa 1988. Words alone cannot express the damage that film did to the youth of America. After watching it I avoided the book "Pippi Longstocking" like it was the plague itself. Only recently have I recanted and decided to read Astrid Lindgren's classic tale. As charming as it is outright bizarre I charge all of you to take the time to find and devour this little Swedish gem. Pippi's a pip, no question.

Working at wish fulfillment on about ten different levels, Pippi is the ultimate kid's kid. She lives all alone in a large fantastic house. Her mother died while she was but a babe and her father has been lost at sea. As optimistic regarding her father's return as Primrose Squarp in "Everything On a Waffle", Pippi fills her days with dancing, pancakes, and games. She owns a whole suitcase of gold coins, which allow her the freedom to live alone and untended. On top of that, she has her own monkey (the drolly named Mr. Nilsson) and horse. The neighbor children Annika and Tommy think (rightly so) that Pippi's a wonder. She never attends school or bothers with all the problems other children suffer. Instead, she has her own unique perspective on life and the people around her. Though precocious she's never mean, even when dealing with bullies or criminals.

The book, originally published in American in 1950, is a wonder. Though I'm certain other illustrators have done a fair job, I highly recommend that you seek out an edition illustrated by the talented Louis S. Glanzman. His Pippi is just as fabulous as you might hope her to be. I've always minded those Pippi's that seem a little too lanky or tough. This Pippi is just mischief incarnate. While you're out seeking an edition of this book illustrated by Glanzman, also make certain that the translation has been done by Florence Lamborn. There were some moments of trans-atlantic interpretation that just blew me away. For example, when confronted by evil bullies numerous in number, the biggest and meanest of them eyes Pippi and says, "boys, let Willie alone and take a look at this girl. What a babe!". Obviously that phrase must've meant something entirely different in 1950, but I was incredibly amused by it just the same. Other funny moments caught my eye. For one thing, Pippi and her friends are forever drinking coffee. Not given the "adult drink" status it has in the states, coffee is definitely the drink of choice of Swedish youth. And there was also the difficulty the translator had with verbal puns. Some of these had to be worked around by explaining what a word means in English. Without these explanations the book's jokes would fall flat.

Finally, my favorite chapter of the book. It was the chapter in which Pippi is invited to a fancy coffee party (see what I meant about kids and coffee?). Pippi attempts desperately to mix and mingle appropriately with the middle-aged lady guests there. When the women start putting down their hired help, Pippi is more than eager to tell multiple increasingly bizarre stories of her grandmother's servant Malin. The ways in which Pippi tells Milan tales becomes more and more extreme until at the end she screams towards the women from the other end of the block, "SHE NEVER SWEPT UNDER THE BEDS". I think you'll have to read the chapter yourself to see just how increasingly hilarious it becomes. It's fabulous stuff.

Every country has its resident red headed heroine. Canada has Anne of Green Gables. America has Caddie Woodlawn. Sweden has Pippi Longstocking. She's the greatest thing since sliced bread and twice as perky. For a fabulous romp through the increasingly ridiculous, I more than recommend this quirky spunky fan-freakin'-tastic book. It hasn't aged a jot.

Pictures are nice; new translation isn't
By Matthew Miller
I bought this edition to read to my young daughters because I was enchanted by the pictures, and hey, it said "sparkling new translation". Unfortunately, it loses some of the charm of the older one. I showed it to some Swedish friends of ours, and they agreed -- specifically, the original book itself is a bit old and uses dated Swedish phrasing, so the older English translation seemed more fitting. (Imagine if, say, The Wind in the Willows were updated to sparkling new English!)

Worse, the words haven't been updated just to be more modern -- they're also sanitized. The glaring example throughout is that Pippi's father is no longer King of the Cannibals -- he's now king of the _natives_. That's not just a translation, it's an editorial change.

I recommend getting The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking instead. The translation is better, and it contains all of the stories, not just the first book.

I have loved Pippi for nearly twenty years!
By Becky
I read my first Pippi Longstocking book in 1983 when I was eight years old, and although I'm now twenty five, she still makes me laugh. She is such a free spirit - she lives alone except for a horse and a monkey, says what she thinks, does whatever comes into her mind, no matter how ridiculous it is, she can laugh at herself, and she enjoys life. But the reason why I hold her in such regard now I'm an adult is that although she says and does whatever her heart desires, it's never done at the expense of anyone else's feelings.

A Great Discussion Starter
By Amazon Customer
This short collection of poems by blacks edited by Arnold Adoff is an excellent primer for all 'colored' people. As the introduction says it is 'black poems for all sisters and brothers.'

There are several classics from Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, and Sam Cornish. Many of the poets are products of the Harlem Renaissance, so no matter what page you read, you'll get a treat.

It's a short book. Great for a book discussion group or even a Sunday school class--the more diverse in age and race, the better. Discuss it with these things in mind: racial sensitivity, cultural relevance (in the poet's era and ours), and empowerment.

Remember: listen. learn. love.

Tales of Ancient Egypt is about inspiring stories that will thrill your heart. The stories are very old and very magical. The book brings you to the world of Ancient Egypt with stories of the Pharoahs and the gods. It covers all of Ancient Egypt's timeline with stories from each time period. It is about wars, and the fall of many cities in battle, and the god's magic. I suggest that if you want to read a very entertaining book than read this one. It was a great book and you will think it was great as well.

Excellent Source for Study of Ancient Egypt
By Khyraen
This is a book of short stories translated from Egyptian hieroglyphics. Some of the oldest stories in the world are told in the three different sections: Gods, Magic, and Adventures. The subject matter may be too confusing for grade school children; Egyptian stories either follow a different pattern of plot development than we are used to or else some of it is lost in translation.

One of the fun things to look for while reading this book is similarities in these stories to ones with which we are more familiar. I found similarities to Biblical stories, a unique take on the kidnapping of Helen by Paris, and my daughter found Ali Baba in one of the stories.

This book will also shine some light on the very complicated Egyptian religion as well as what they considered to be a virtue or a vice. For example, they often praise cunning--a virtue praised again and again within these stories. Have you children see what they can summarize about Egyptian priorities from these stories.

Summary: Highly recommended home school book for pre-teens and teens which will add depth to their study of this ancient civilization. A Landmark Books classic.

A Fair Wind for Troy
By Anna M. Ligtenberg
ISBN 014031718X - The back cover says ages 8-12 and I wasn't entirely sure about that - Greek mythology that an 8 year old can follow? Having read it, I'm still not sure, but Gates did a pretty good job. Pokemon proved that 8 year olds who can't remember to brush their teeth CAN remember large numbers of strange names and details; that ability will serve them well with the Greek Myths series.

King Tyndareus' daughter, Helen, is a beauty beyond compare. Every man seems to want her for his wife and giving her to one is bound to cause trouble with others. With some advice from Odysseus, Tyndareus allows Helen to choice her own husband, but first all the men must take an oath. They swear that they will not try to take Helen away from the man she chooses and that, if any man does, they will help him to get her back. The oath is taken and Helen chooses Menelaus, her brother-in-law. After ten years, Helen is bored with her marriage and not particularly fond of her daughter.

In Troy, years earlier a baby boy was born to King Priam and Queen Hecuba. A seer told them that the baby would cause the ruin of Troy and, to avoid this, they agreed he must die. They turned him over to a shepherd who chose to raise him instead, without telling the king. As a young man, he is called to decide who is the fairest of three goddesses - as a bribe, Aphrodite promises him Helen. When the two finally meet, it is the beginning of the the end of Troy.

Several stories begin and seem to just be forgotten, only to eventually get woven into the overall tale. This makes it hard to get focused at first, but don't give up. Once the story gets rolling, it picks up speed all the way to the end. I've always found Greek mythology makes my head spin but Gates, writing for kids, finally made it something I could follow!

Eastern tales that have seized the Western mind!
By Godly Gadfly
The Tales from the Arabian Nights are ancient stories of romance, suspense, mystery, magic and adventure originating from Persia, India and Arabia, originally functioning as the daily entertainment of ordinary people. They are woven together under the premise that they saved the life of Shahrazad, a queen whose husband executed each of his new wives after one night of marriage. By beginning an exciting story every evening, but withholding the ending, Shahrazad was able to convince the breathless king to spare her for another day until the next installment. Of course, after 1001 nights of devious story-telling, she had saved her life forever.
First introduced to the Western world in the eighteenth century, these stories have attained great popularity, and been retold many times, with "Aladdin" even being made into a Disney film. This collection features only a small selection of the best and most popular tales. Unlike many editions, it doesn't reflect the contemporary versions of the stories, but seeks to be faithful to the authentic Arabic sources. N.J. Dawood is well-equipped to retell these stories from the original Arabic. Born in Baghdad, Dawood attained a reputation as a scholar and received a university education in London. Amongst other projects he has translated "The Koran" and a complete collection of "Tales from the Thousand and One Nights."
Because this version intends to be faithful to the original Arabic, readers should not expect a sanitized Western interpretation. If you are looking for a fresh style that brings these stories to life for children in a modern Western audience, this is likely not the edition for you. These stories are unashamedly Arabic in character, and the religious aspect (Islam) is dominant throughout, where health and wealth, wine and women are bestowed as the blessing of Allah for obedience. But despite this, these stories continue to capture the Western imagination. Expect to read stories about powerful genies (jinees), magical lamps, talking animals, distant voyages, and impossible adventures.
This volume (a companion to "Aladdin and Other Tales from The Arabian Nights") contains the well-known stories of the seven voyages of "Sinbad the Sailor", and "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves". Also represented are the lesser-known but equally fascinating "Tale of the Hunchback" and "The Barber of Baghdad". A great opportunity to read stories that have stood the test of time in another culture - these are classics, and make a good introduction to the original cultural flavour of "Tales from the Arabian Nights"!

About the Author
Allen Carr was an accountant who smoked 100 cigarettes a day until he broke the habit and wrote a series of bestselling books, most famously The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. His immensely successful clinics help those with a range of concerns, including overweight, smoking and fear of flying. Allen Carr was diagnosed with lung cancer in the summer of 2006 and died in November of the same year. Many thought it likely that the years he spent curing smokers in smoke-filled sessions at his clinics must have contributed to this illness, but Allen Carr remained positive, 'Given that I am informed that I have cured at least 10 million smokers on a conservative estimation, it's a price worth paying.'

Free to travel!!
By B. Mehrtens
My first plane ride was in 1996 when I was 20 years old. The only way I made it through was to literally convince myself that I was going to die, there was nothing I could do about it and I should make my peace with God. By 30, I needed prescriptions like adavan to even get near the airport. An upcoming flight meant an upset stomach, sweating and more than one episode of diarreah. Even with medication, take-off meant silently crying while pretending to sleep.

Now no more! I had already read the Easy Way for Women to Stop Smoking and succeeded beyond my wildest dreams, so I thought 'what the heck, I'll give it a try'. I finished the last page as the plane taxied down the runway. I didn't take any medication (except dramamine for motion-sickness). Now my only fear is becoming nauseated by turbulence. Interestingly, I experience the absolute worst turbulence on that flight--worse than the most pot-hole filled road I have ever driven down. But I was still fine. No panic attacks, no silent sobbing and fearing for my life, no medication. I am now free to schedule my vacations without dreading the flight there and back. I am so elated that I am free!! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a fear of flying, it is also helpful for acrophobics and claustrophobics (like me). I cannot recommend this book enough. I am now saving up for a flight to Europe--a dream I had long ago given up as impossible because of my fear. Please read this book and start enjoying your vacations!!

Great No Non-sense Book
By Andrea Waguespack
I've had a fear of flying since I was a child... I can remember my grandmother offering to take us to Disney, but I wouldn't go because I was convinced the planes would crash mid-air. I finally took my first flight 15 years later in 2004, and have been flying a few times a year since then. Even though I powered through it, the whole thing -- from the first thought of taking a vacation until the plane finally landed at the very end of the trip -- was so stressful. I just finished Allen Carr's book, and let me tell you, I feel so much better about flying. He is so straight-forward and direct, yet at the same time he will tell you your fears are normal and rational. He goes through, point by point, the main reasons people have the fear then he proceeds to demystify them. I recommend this book to anyone! It was easy to read, and it was to the point. I finished it in a few days. I liked this book so much that I ordered his weight-loss book. Kudos, Mr. Carr!

Really Helped My Fear
By Andrea Gale
I had a serious case of fear of flying and this book made me feel so much more at ease. He talked about how falling from the sky (which is what we all fear in some way) is impossible and that there are multiple backup systems in place on a plane it's ridiculous. This really made all the difference on my next flight. Fear was gone! He has a whole line of books on different topics and I own 3 of them. This is highly recommended!

Letters from Yellowstone, by Diane Smith

In the spring of 1898, A. E. (Alexandria) Bartram--a spirited young woman with a love for botany--is invited to join a field study in Yellowstone National Park. The study's leader, a mild-mannered professor from Montana, assumes she is a man, and is less than pleased to discover the truth. Once the scientists overcome the shock of having a woman on their team, they forge ahead on a summer of adventure, forming an enlightening web of relationships as they move from Mammoth Hot Springs to a camp high in the backcountry. But as they make their way collecting amid Yellowstone's beauty the group is splintered by differing views on science, nature, and economics. In the tradition of A. S. Byatt's Angels and Insects and Andrea Barrett's Ship Fever, this delightful novel captures an ever-fascinating era and one woman's attempt to take charge of her life.

From Publishers Weekly
In the spring of 1898, the Smithsonian Institution organized an expedition for botanical research in Wyoming's Yellowstone Park. First-time novelist Smith, an environmental and science writer, follows amateur botanist A.E. Bartram's summer as the lone woman in that party of male professionals, telling her story through detailed letters (and the occasional Western Union telegram). When Cornell student Bartram arrives in the camp, she receives a cool reception from expedition leader H.G. Merriam, who expected "A.E." to be a man. As the botanists strive to get along and gather flora unique to the Rocky Mountain area, they encounter the U.S. Cavalry and Native Americans. Disturbed by Professor Merriam's inventive, sometimes nonscientific methods, Dr. Philip Aber of the Smithsonian visits the park to inspect and perhaps close down the project. The troubled Dr. Aber finally wanders off unguided into one of Yellowstone's scalding thermal springs; his death adds to the party's web of tensions. As life in Yellowstone changes her, Miss Bartram must deal with her stiff-necked Cornell mentor, Professor Lester King, whose "black-and-white" thinking she finally comes to reject. Miss Bartram lights up the novel with her admirable intelligence, wit and honest desire to learn from everyone, but Smith wisely prevents her epistles from overwhelming the other characters' voices. Instead, the collage of letters and telegrams produces a Rashomon effectAthe same actions are viewed from many perspectives with no one narrator dominant. Serenely attentive, deliberately paced, as careful with psychology and history as it is with its botany, Smith's epistolary narrative makes a worthy addition to the expanding category of history-of-science novels. From School Library Journal
-Told entirely through correspondence, this fascinating and often funny story tells of a scientific expedition to Yellowstone Park in 1899 to collect samples of its flora and fauna before more tourists trample the park. Howard Merriam, a mild-mannered professor from Montana and a botanist, leads the group. He writes his mother often and in great detail. Before the field crew gathers, a team member unexpectedly drops out, and, in desperation, the professor recruits A. E. Bartram, a medical student with a passion for botany but no professional training. The fact that the "A" stands for Alexandria is only revealed upon her arrival, and the addition of a female to a field crew camping in the wild causes great consternation among the other participants. The colorful lot includes Dr. Andrew Rutherford, an agriculturist looking for plants useful for cultivation and a heavy drinker determined to teach a pet raven to talk; Kim Li, a mediocre Chinese cook; and two undergraduate students who expected a summer vacation. Misadventures both hilarious and frightening occur as the work progresses, and attractive Alex Bartram emerges as a forthright and brave leader and a serious scientist. After many setbacks, the expedition achieves unexpected, if qualified, success. YAs will be caught up in this exciting story of the exploration and exploitation of Yellowstone and will learn of the park's early history, the trials of pioneers in scientific exploration, and the struggle of a woman to achieve respect as a scientist.

From Library Journal
Smith has done a fine job with her first novel. Using the anonymity of correspondence, young A.E. (Alexandria) Bartram, a medical student and avid botanist, procures a spot on a Smithsonian-sponsored expedition to Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 1898. After the initial confusion over her gender and abilities subsides, Alex is accepted as part of a team that includes a mild-mannered professor, an inebriated agriculturist, a seldom-seen entomologist, a Chinese cook, a Crow Indian family, and a series of benefactors. As the weeks pass, Alex finds herself "committed to both illustrating as well as collecting" the flora and fauna of the park. Told entirely in letters, the book offers abundant detail and a mannered style that perfectly capture the attitudes and atmosphere of the era. Display this title next to A.S. Byatt's Angels and Insects and Annie Dillards's The Living. Recommended for all fiction collections.ACharlotte L. Glover, Ketchikan P.L., AK

Insightful read about Yellowstone and society in late 1800's
By A Customer
I purchased this book to take with me on my first trip to Yellowstone National Park recently. It was a perfect book to take along! What struck me most was that it was set at the end of the 19th century which seemed to be a great time of change. It was interesting to be in the park myself about 100 years later and feel how much had changed, yet how much had stayed the same especially in regard to people and our need and concern to protect our National Parks and environment. The book deals more with the human element and some of the plant life but not much with the animal or geologic wonders of the park, but it was highly enjoyable and definately added another element of appreciation to my experience. I only wish the story had continued as I became very attached to the characters in her book.

If you can't get to Montana this summer, read this instead.
By A Customer
I recently have had the great pleasure of reading Diane Smith's Letters From Yellowstone, and would recommend it without reservation to a wide variety of readers. While I am not normally a fan of epistolary novels, the characters in this work are so compelling the novel is difficult to put aside. This novel should appeal to environmentalists, feminists, naturalists, and other ists who prefer to remain unlabeled, such as I.
It is ostensibly the story of a group of 1898 scientists on an expedition of discovery to catalog the flora and fauna of Yellowstone Park before tourists, the railroad, local entrepreneurs, and poachers destroy it. I say ostensibly, because the expedition is one of self-discovery as much as scientific cataloguing. None of the principals is unchanged by the experience. Additionally, Smith uses this forum to introduce readers to a number of late twentieth century concerns: wildlife management, commercialization of public lands, role of women in sciences. The author's treatment of these topics is not heavy handed, and her careful research shows these concerns are universal, not just limited to a single era.
The novel's primary characters eventually find themselves debating the validity of science in comparison to other systems of knowledge and belief, and their conclusions are rather enlightening to those of who might think we have our position in life all figured out. Unlike numerous other authors who have attempted to express the dialectic of science versus belief, Smith succeeds. She is neither dry, nor pedantic in her characters' discussions.
All this is accomplished against the sublime background of the Northern Rockies. The action of the novel moves at the pace of a northern summer: days seem to last forever, but the summer season lasts scarcely more than two months. Despite delays and reverses in fortune, the party moves along with an inexorable drive brought on by the knowledge of the fleeting field season. While not an adventure, this book is nevertheless a page turner. Read Letters From Yellowstone while the summer is still here. You won't regret it.
