When The Grapes of Wrath was published in 1939, America, still recovering from the Great Depression, came face to face with itself in a startling, lyrical way. John Steinbeck gathered the country's recent shames and devastations--the Hoovervilles, the desperate, dirty children, the dissolution of kin, the oppressive labor conditions--in the Joad family. Then he set them down on a westward-running road, local dialect and all, for the world to acknowledge. For this marvel of observation and perception, he won the Pulitzer in 1940.

The prize must have come, at least in part, because alongside the poverty and dispossession, Steinbeck chronicled the Joads' refusal, even inability, to let go of their faltering but unmistakable hold on human dignity. Witnessing their degeneration from Oklahoma farmers to a diminished band of migrant workers is nothing short of crushing. The Joads lose family members to death and cowardice as they go, and are challenged by everything from weather to the authorities to the California locals themselves. As Tom Joad puts it: "They're a-workin' away at our spirits. They're a tryin' to make us cringe an' crawl like a whipped bitch. They tryin' to break us. Why, Jesus Christ, Ma, they comes a time when the on'y way a fella can keep his decency is by takin' a sock at a cop. They're workin' on our decency."

The point, though, is that decency remains intact, if somewhat battle-scarred, and this, as much as the depression and the plight of the "Okies," is a part of American history. When the California of their dreams proves to be less than edenic, Ma tells Tom: "You got to have patience. Why, Tom--us people will go on livin' when all them people is gone. Why, Tom, we're the people that live. They ain't gonna wipe us out. Why, we're the people--we go on." It's almost as if she's talking about the very novel she inhabits, for Steinbeck's characters, more than most literary creations, do go on. They continue, now as much as ever, to illuminate and humanize an era for generations of readers who, thankfully, have no experiential point of reference for understanding the depression. The book's final, haunting image of Rose of Sharon--Rosasharn, as they call her--the eldest Joad daughter, forcing the milk intended for her stillborn baby onto a starving stranger, is a lesson on the grandest scale. Reader Dylan Baker, who gives each character a distinctive voice, draws the listener in. His female characters, especially the minor ones and Rose of Sharon, don't seem as authentic as his wonderful evocation of the fictional Tom, Ma, and Pa. But his voice is easy to listen to, and he is faithful to the characters' backgrounds and the plains region. The music that ends each individual tape is perfect for the story. TRULY A "MASTERPIECE"

I don't know how anyone could read this book and not give it a five star rating. The true test for me of a "great book" is one that stays with me -- one I can't stop thinking about long after I've finished. I read this book for the second time in my life a month ago (first time was in high school many years ago), and I'm still haunted by the suffering endured by the Joad family. The interesting thing is that Steinbeck wrote this book in 1939 at the height of the injustices being fraught upon the migrant workers in California. I'm sure it wasn't popular then as it brought to the forefront the corruption of some powerful people in America. It also spoke to the conscience of every American which eventually led to political reform in California. After reading this book, I did some research into Steinbeck's motivation and learned that he was haunted by the plight of California's migrant workers to the point of obsession. To fuel his anger, he would visit the migrant camps each day full of their dirt, disease and hungry people and then return home to write about those people responsible for these conditions -- people he considered to be murderers.
Steinbeck concentrated on the circumstances of one family, The Joads, tenant farmers in Oklahoma until they were forced out by the larger companies who wanted their land back. With dreams of luscious grapes and peaches in abundance waiting to be picked, they loaded up their belongings and began their journey on Route 66 headed for Bakersfield, California. They began their trip with a bevy of colorful characters led by Ma and Pa Joad. It's amazing how much power Steinbeck gave to Ma Joad -- years before women had any right to a voice. Unfortunately, just as the Joads were heading out, so were thousands upon thousands of other families. This would ultimately lead to supply and demand. There would be too many workers for the few jobs available and, consequently, people would be agreeing to work for peanuts just to be able to feed their families.
Steinbeck's writing is astounding as the unrest of the migrants builds to a crescendo and just as the dust has risen in Oklahoma, so will the voices of the poor migrant workers. Steinbeck says, "In the eyes of the hungry, there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people, the grapes of wrath are growing heavy." It is just a matter of time before their wrath is unleashed and you can feel it in every page you turn. He says that, "Our people are good people; our people are kind people. Pray God some day kind people won't all be poor. Pray God someday a kid can eat." I don't know how you can read some of his words and not get teary eyed. But sixty years have passed since the writing of this book and there are still migrant stories to be told and kids who have no food to eat yet sadly the world continues despite its injustices.
I won't kid you into believing that this is an easy book to read. The first 150 pages are so slow going that I almost had to put it down. But I kept on going just as the Joad's kept on going and I'm certainly glad I did. We could all take a lesson from their quest for survival and their quest just to be able to eat the next day. Their determination, in light of all the obstacles they had to face, is truly a lesson to be learned. You feel a sense of accomplishment after reading a book like this -- I know I did.

Read this book -- it's astounding

I can't remember the last time I was moved so profoundly by a work of fiction. I finished the book two weeks ago and have not been able to stop talking or thinking about it. Read this book. It will truly change the way you view the world.

The book is beautifully written. Steinbeck's style flows so smoothly and is so accessible. The book follows the Joad family for about nine months as they are driven from the place they've called home for generations and travel to California, only to find out that it is not the land of opportunity they expected. Steinbeck's formula here is to intersperse the lengthy chapters chronicling the Joads' journey with short chapters that encapsulate some nuance about the period or the people, giving you a picture of the greater struggle taking place, of which the Joads are just a small part. It creates a very powerful effect. This migration west involved hundreds of thousands of individuals. You see in a few pages the big picture, then you are pulled back into the intimacies of the Joads' lives and the tragedy is made very personal. In one especially startling example, Steinbeck puts these words into the mouth of a character after selling a nameless migrant and his family some gas for their car, "Well, you and me got sense. Them goddamn Okies got no sense and no feeling. They ain't human. A human being wouldn't live like they do. A human being couldn't stand it to be so dirty and miserable. They ain't a hell of a lot better than gorillas." In the next chapter, the Joads make camp along a stream and Ma is so happy for the clean water and the chance to stay put for a day so that she can take a bath and wash the family's clothes. The Joads are good, honest, decent people looking for the means to earn an honest wage and thereby feed their family. The thought of charity repels them. At one point Pa talks about the prospect of picking cotton and is so excited about the fact that it's good, hard work, worthy of the wage he'll earn. How soft and incredibly privileged it makes us all seem. "They streamed over the mountains, hungry and restless - restless as ants, scurrying to find work to do - to lift, to push, to pull, to pick, to cut - anything, any burden to bear, for food."

I live in a citrus community in Florida, which is populated by a large number of migrant workers. It never occurred to me to wonder how they felt about their lives. I never thought to wonder if they had dreams of someday owning their own home and staying put for a while. I've read criticism that "The Grapes of Wrath" is a communist manifesto. It may have socialist leanings, but how long can individuals or a society overlook the less fortunate without feeling some shame? Read this book. It should be mandatory, but would be wasted on most teenagers (or maybe I just think it might have been wasted on me). Pick it up as an adult, as I did, and read it. You'll never again look at others or yourself in the same way.

Possibly THE Greatest American Novel

I have never read a better novel written by an American than THE GRAPES OF WRATH. Steinbeck's deeply touching tale of displaced families and a nation rent by Depression will never cease to be relevant.
The Joads and thousands of others are driven out of Oklahoma by drought and the Depression. It is bad enough they lose their farms to homes and have to move. It is worse that the big business fruit growers in California print misleading flyers claiming to have far more well-paying jobs available than they ever intended to have. It is miserable when they get to California (where the people curse them as "Okies") and find out that as few as one man owns as much a million acres--much of it lying fallow in front of their eyes.
As difficult as the plight of the Joads and families like them, Steinbeck does not paint the Californians or their police as evil so much as scared into treachery and violence in order to protect their own. No one wants to starve and starvation after the dust bowl and thanks to the exploitative wages paid by the vineyard owners is a very real possibility. Nor does he canonize the migrants--the societies that grow up by the side of the road each night have their own laws and lawbreakers, stout hearts and slatterns--but does show them as civilized people who don't deserve being treated like animals. Many fearful Californians don't agree.
Steinbeck's character Tom Joad (whose ghost lives on in a Bruce Springsteen's song recently covered by Rage Against the Machine) is as important to American literature as Huckleberry Finn, Holden Caulfield and Jay Gatsby. Joad knows life offers no simple solutions, but he also knows that fair is fair. When a man's employers charge him for his work gear AND operate the stores where he must buy his food so that he often ends up OWING his employers more at the end of the week than his pitiful wages can cover, Tom Joad knows that's not just. He knows the land is fertile enough to feed everyone, so don't try giving him any speeches about "private property" and "supply and demand." If the test of a system and a society is how it treats it poorest members (especially in a crisis like the Depression), then the world the Joads live in fails miserably.
No less strong a character than her son Tom, Ma Joad embodies all the cliches about being a tower of strength without actually being a cliché herself. She and her family possess all the true grit and hearty spirit America prides itself on as a nation of pioneers, but by the 1930s the frontier has been bought up and the pioneers are in desperate straits.
This book is occasionally criticized for being too socialistic. This criticism is misguided; what THE GRAPES OF WRATH does is show how capitalism can and often does enrich the few while the many suffer. Steinbeck shows how breadbasket farmers were thrown off the land they had worked for generations so bankers in the East can make more profit. Can this happen today, even in a time of tremendous prosperity? Ask today's family farmers what agribusiness has done to them. THE GRAPES OF WRATH is no call to play the "Internationale," but it does starkly and intelligently raise questions about the meaning of equal opportunity and justice for all.
This is a book that should be required reading for Alan Greenspan, the editors of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and triumphal capitalists everywhere who wince for their stock dividends when the unemployment rate goes down. Not to mention every single elected official in the United States. The subject matter is extremely heavy and sad, but Steinbeck's style is straightforward and easy (even with the various dialects he employs perfectly). THE GRAPES OF WRATH does what so very few great novels can: it will take a lot out of you, but leave you with much more than you had when you began.

FRIEDRICH

In considering what other book about the Holocaust (besides Anne Frank's DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL) to have my eighth-grade students read this year, I am considering FRIEDRICH as it offers something new to the mix that I consider thought-provoking: what was it like to be swept up into the Nazi party as a child, thinking that the initial get-togethers with other kids were fun!

DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL is light-years ahead of FRIEDRICH in writing style, emotional depth, and the overwhelming intricacies of what it is like to watch someone mature. It is also non-fiction, very much from a girl's perspective, and is a slowly evolving story that deals with Jews in hiding -- the story becomes more about the internal world of Anne Frank than external world of the Nazis; FRIEDRICH offers something different.

I think the most affecting aspect of FRIEDRICH is the slow development of the horror of the Third Reich. At first, both boys (Friedrich and the narrator) think being a member of the Jungvolk is great, but over time comes the slow realization that the world is not all fun and games. In fact, when the narrator joins the mob destroying a Jewish school, he doesn't share the political will, but simply enjoys the idea of smashing things -- the internalization of what he's doing doesn't really enter the picture until he sees the same mob enter Friedrich's apartment and do the same thing.

This unique, horrifying de-evolution of civility is presented very simply; so simple that the reading level of FREIDRICH is probably fifth- or sixth-grade. However, I have read many children's/young adult books that are told simply, but convey much deeper meaning, and deserve a careful analysis.

FRIEDRICH is not meant to replace DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL, but it is a very good companion piece -- particularly as it is more of a boys' book and that's important for a teacher to have in his/her arsenal when working with such a difficult subject.

I believe that the publisher could package this book better (new cover art, more factual addenda), and I would recommend getting a translation that uses a higher level vocabulary to attract more students to it. These changes would truly give a boost to the use of this book in the classroom.

A compeling novel you must have in your libraray

As a 12 year old student I decided to read "Friedrich" a novel about the holocaust and how it treats him. Hans is Friedrich best friend and the author of the book. He saw and heard everything that happened to Friedrichin the book. At frist, Friedrich is more fortune then his friend Hans, who is poor, but as you read on, freidrich's life changed. His father is fored to quit his job because Hitler doesn't allow jew to own a business. Friedrich is kick out of school becuase Hitler thinks Jew don't deserve an education. Worst when he's gone, the evil Nazis beat and killed his mother and sent his father to a concentreation camp. This book isn't all about Friedrich's torture. His friends and family help him by taking care of him and giving him a picture of his parents to remember them by. "Friedrich" is a compelling heart warming book. I rate it on a scale of 1-10 a 10, because this is the first novel I enjoyed. This book made me think about why God would ever let this happen. It almost made me cry, then I remembered how his friends helped him and it stopped the tears.

Excellent Story!

There are so many great stories out there that one can find about Holocaust Europe. Although this story is written for younger ages, it is a great story none the less. Richter tells this story as a first person narrative writing in a simple but elegant way. It depicts the childhood of Richter and his friendship with his Jewish friend Friedrich. One really gets a good idea of the way Jews were treated in the 1930's and 40's by others influenced by the new Nazi party. Richter's story also gives you an idea of how the Holocaust tore apart families and friendships. This is an excellent story, that will really take you away with the author's excellent story telling and very personal narrative.

Rabbit and Hare both love to eat, and so they decide to share food by breaking different fruits and vegetables in half. When the mushroom divides unevenly, the two animals fight over the largest piece. Mr. Raccoon (the devious arbiter) offers to solve their problem by taking a bite out of the larger piece. Children will easily anticipate the result: he eats the whole thing. By the second episode, Rabbit and Hare are not as easily fooled and come up with a plan to divide their apple that satisfies both of them. The short sentences complete with word repetition are the basic elements needed to insure reading success. Although Bolam's illustrations are not particularly dynamic, their spareness complements the simple text and provides important contextual clues for new readers.?Amelia Kalin, Valley Cottage Library, NY

In trying to divide a mushroom in half, Rabbit and Hare (grown-ups may need to explain) end up with unequal pieces. When both animals claim the larger one, Mr. Raccoon volunteers to step in to make them equal--by taking a bite from the bigger piece. Innocent Rabbit and Hare agree--only to realize they've been "had" when the mushroom disappears into the raccoon's tummy. The simplicity of Bolam's artwork allows children to assess the mathematics without unnecessary distraction. It also captures the silly joke, which little ones will surely enjoy. Stephanie Zvirin

Introducing Fractions to Young Children

This book was suggested on my Grandchild's 1st grade math homework paper. I could not find it in his Elementary School Library, so I purchased it from Amazon. He LOVED it and asked questions that let me know the book encouraged him to look to his home setting for more ideas about fractions. My 5 year old Granddaughter also loved this book. I highly recommend it for the young learner.

Simple Division

This is a brightly colored level 1 easy-to-read book that encourages children to think about division and how to divide items evenly. The rabbit and the hare try to divide a mushroom into equal parts without success. The raccoon intervenes and eats the mushroom. They try again with an apple, but it is not divided in equal parts either. The raccoon offers to help again but rabbit and hare are wiser and decline his help. Rabbit and hare devise a plan to cut the larger and smaller pieces of the apple into equal parts. I would recommend this book to help children start to understand division and apply it to real life situations.

Read them all. They're all wonderful!

As a child in the 1950's, I read the original Borrowers in 4th grade. I read and re-read the one in the school library, til school closed for the summer. As luck would have it, I found the book and it's subsequent additions that summer in a book store. They were the only thing I ever BEGGED my mother to buy me. I took home The Borowers, The Borrowers Afield, and The Borrowers Afloat, and I still know parts of them by heart. When I was 18, the Borrowers Aloft came out, and my mother sent it to me at college. I was 36 when the Avenged came out, and I RAN to the bookstore. The stories are as fresh today as the first time I read them. I'm now in my 50's, and I can't imagine a life without Homily, Pod and Arriety Clock. Homily who is courageous, even though she'd rather not be. Pod, who is a simple man, taking care of his family. And Arriety, ready for life, ready for adventure, a young Victorian Feminist, if there ever was one. She taught me that a girl could be anything she wanted to be. They bravely faced a daunting world, and they're only 6 inches tall. I now own well over a thousand books, and really believe that it was this small family that lead me to my love of reading.

I liked this book a lot. I like to read about how resourceful the Borrowers are when they use stuff humans don't need or misplace. It had really nice pictures, too. I recommend this book to kids five years and older.

Light time travel adventure

"Time Cat" was the first book by classic writer Lloyd Alexander. It's a fluffy but enjoyable time travel adventure for cat-lovers and historical fantasy buffs alike; there's a little roughness around the edges, less detailed writing, but it's a pleasantly whimsical little trip through time.
Jason is up in his room after a fight with his mother and brother, with only his cat Gareth for company. To Jason's surprise, Gareth suddenly starts speaking to him. He is, surprisingly, a magical cat who can travel through time and space -- to any nine lives in the past. He takes Jason on a trip through time, to ancient Egypt where the boy-pharaoh wants to worship him; the Roman empire, where they are recruited by a legion and then captured by Celts; ancient Ireland, where they make enemies with a court magician and friends with a very special saint; Imperial Japan, where a young Emperor is given Gareth and a bunch of kittens as a gift; Renaissance Italy, where the two bump into a talented young painter; Spanish-dominated Peru, where they befriend a scatterbrained, silver-tongued young captain; they introduce a special cat to the Isle of Man; witch-hunters in medieval Germany; and finally making friends with a kindly cat-peddler in 1775 Boston.
"Time Cat" has no central plot. Instead, it is a series of vignettes: A couple of chapters are devoted to each time period. It's like an extended daydream, displaying what are presumably the time periods that interest (or possibly frighten) Alexander himself. He also displays some educational material about cats -- how they were seen through history, things about Manx cats, and about all the roles that cats can play in a person's life.
Jason is a sympathetic kid, very quiet in nature (except for the brother-punching incident near the beginning) with some clear insights into cats and some fuzzier insights into history. Gareth is a cool, calm, wise, serene -- the ideal cat. And he talks too! There are too many supporting characters to cover adequately, but some stand out in particular, such as Diahan, the Irish princess who shows signs of Alexander's later heroine Eilonwy, and Don Diego, a scatterbrained, homesick young Spaniard who gets things wrong -- but a few things very right.
Even people who don't like time travel stories may like this one, for its lack of pretension or faked dilemmas. And for cat lovers, this is a delightful little historical treat.

Purrfect!!!

Wow, that was pathetically corny, but I couldn't resist.
Anyway, Alexander's book is wonderful. He's certainly my favorite, but Time Cat still managed to surprise me. It was an entertaining story (which ALL of his are), and it also reached some of the depth of his best tales (Westmark, Prydain, The Marvelous Misadventures of Sebastian).
The concept is great. Everyone knows that cats have nine live, but we don't realize that they live them simultaneously in various periods and places and can move from life to life at will. The cat in this, Gareth, ends up taking a boy, Jason, with him to visit each life. They visit such places as Egypt: 2700 B.C., Ireland: 411 A.D., Peru: 1555, Italy: 1468, and others. They get through an exciting adventure in each place and time.
Each story is highly entertaining. You get to witness the excitement while learning about various cultural facts and historic figures (such as Saint Patrick and Leonardo da Vinci). The real strength in the novel is the way in which the stories work together to create a strong message about being in awe of life and living it with courage and compassion. Time Cat is a superb novel and one of Alexander's best.

I am in second grade. This book had very good details and the exploring was really interesting. I love this book because I love cats too. I'm going to read more books by Mr. Alexander. I hope that all of you will read this book... Time Cat.

About the Author
Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-89) was born in Essex, the eldest son of a prosperous middle-class family. He was educated at Highgate School and Balliol College, Oxford, where he read Classics and began his lifelong friendship with Robert Bridges. In 1866 he entered the Roman Catholic Church and two years later he became a member of the Society of Jesus. In 1877 he was ordained and was priest in a number of parishes including a slum district in Liverpool. From 1882 to 1884 he taught at Stonyhurst College and in 1884 he became Classics Professor at University College, Dublin. In his lifetime Hopkins was hardly known as a poet, except to one or two friends; his poems were not published until 1918, in a volume edited by Robert Bridges.

There were two English poets who immediately resonated with me as a teenager and who have kept faith with me in all these years. One is John Donne and the other is Gerard Manley Hopkins. Both first met at 14 at the Singapore American School courtesy of a English Literature class, there was an almost electric connection, which if I had been more self-aware would have told me something about my own sense of aesthetics (lacking) and tastes (more intellectual than sensuous).
In high school, boarding school and college I think Wreck of the Deutschland was my favorite - when I actually figured out how "sprung rhythm" worked I believe I shouted for joy and did a little dance around my room. Only gradually did I come to appreciate the accuracy of the Windhower, depicted in the sound of the poem. The poems dealing directly with religion however remained a closed door.
This lasted until last year, a year of unexpected and devastating loss. And in the worst hours I turned to: John Donne and Gerard Manley Hopkins, and found profound comfort in both, and finally I understood that last, bitter, heartbreaking poem that Father Gerard wrote and learned what it was to "wrestle with (my God) my God" - "Carrion Comfort".

One of the great poetic geniuses of all English Literature- A Richness so rare no Ripeness could be greater

Reading the early poems one immediately understands how great and conscious an effort Hopkins made to transform himself into a distinctive poetic voice.

Hopkins did not write a great deal( Compare his spare output to the reams of Wordsworth) but he wrote a number of poems which are, in my judgment, among the greatest in the language. He did this by creating a distinctive diction, and rhythm of his own.

The sprung rhythm which he employed had its origin in his reading of Anglo- Saxon poetry, with its emphasis on scanning the strong stresses alone. The alliterative quality of his verse also has its origin in early Anglo- Saxon poetry.

But Hopkins infuses his work with an intensity of meaning, a richness so rare no ripeness could be greater.

Among the truly great poems in this collection my favorites are"," Thou Art Indeed Just Lord", " God's Grandeur" " and Felix Randal."

This is great great poetry, and among the greatest written about human suffering.

Emily Dickinson would have felt a chill down her spine at reading it. And for Kafka it would have most certainly broken up the icy- sea within.

I am a great fan of Hopkins. His work touches not merely the intellect, but the soul with its depth of insight and tenderness. There is a richness to his work that many of the poets who were his contemporaries lacked. There is faith, hope, love, and a respect for the universe and its Creator. Another beautiful Penguin Classic collection. Every library personal and public should have a copy.

Grade 3-6?Ohkwa'ri is hiding in a shaded area when he overhears the misguided Grabber's intentions to start a war with the neighboring Anen:taks tribe. Although the boy is barely 11 winters old, he realizes something must be done to stop his fellow tribesman's plans. Set in a longhouse village in upstate New York, Bruchac's story establishes a sense of place in the first chapter: Ohkwa'ri works to become a respected member of his tribe, while Grabber and his cohorts, Greasy Hair, Falls a Lot, and Eats Like a Bear, attempt to get even with him. Despite the predictability of the plot, young readers will enjoy the glimpses of Native American culture. The importance of respect and honor are clearly outlined through Ohkwa'ri's feelings toward his elders such as his grandmother and his uncle. On his own, the earnest young hero builds and sleeps in his own lodge, illustrating independence and self-sufficiency. Other aspects of Native life such as name giving, government, and family relations are outlined. The mixing of fact with fiction is consistent and believable. Jan Hudson's Sweetgrass (Scholastic, 1991) or Elizabeth George Speare's The Sign of the Beaver (Dell, 1993) are more absorbing, yet Bruchac's latest offering is a good choice for large collections.?Julie Shatterly, York County Public Library, Rock Hill, SC

Set in a Mohawk village in the late 1490s, the story offers a detailed look at the traditional Mohawk way of life. Through Ohkwa'ri and his twin sister, Otsi:stia, Bruchac explores the roles of men and women, teaching practices, family relationships, and social life and customs before contact with European explorers and traders. Although the information overshadows the story at times, middle readers interested in traditional practices will find this clear and easy to understand. An awesome book

Children of the Longhouse is a thrilling book about a Native American boy named Ohkwa're and his twin sister Otsi:stia. Ohkwa'ri overhears some boys planning to start a battle with the Anen:taks, a neighboring tribe. He told on them and saved his village from a war. Wanting revenge, the boys bully him and soon put his life in danger. You should read this book because it's exciting and I couldn't put it down when I started reading it. Also, I learned about the daily lives of the Mohawks. It was interesting how they played sports, how they used plants to make medicine and how they celebrated holidays. The end was suspenseful and I would recommend this book for kids to read.

I read "Children of the Longhouse" aloud to my fourth grade classes each year as a wonderful springboard to teach NYS Native American history in alignment with NYS Social Study Standards. The story-line holds the interest of the students and is packed with historical information and Native American customs and culture that the children are interested in and retain. It also peaks the students interest to investigate present Native American issues. Reading this book is a pleasant way to learn about a valuable topic.

Grade 4-8 Giff's account of the 1977 Nobel Prize winner differs from at least five other juvenile titles issued since 1981 because Giff showsespecially to non-Catholic readersthe religious background that led her to join nuns in Calcutta and to serve the poorest of the poor in the world's most crowded slums. Giff uses short sentences, wisely selected anecdotes and pronunciation helps as she shows that one individual can change the world by helping the nearest person because she sees God in everyone. A significant contribution is the mention of the Sisters' respect for each child's Hindu, Muslim or Christian faith in education and marriage rites. One questionable statement is that children "hardly ever washed," which conflicts with ritual Hindu cleansing. Lewin's realistic acrylic and wash street scenes are dramatic but lack the impact of photographs. Leigh's Mother Teresa (Bookwright Pr, 1986) has similar wording and color photos and illustrations that have a stronger impact, but it underestimates the size of the slum population. Mother Teresa's motives could confuse American young people, but both Leigh and Giff express them in Mother Teresa's own words, words that illuminate a face wrinkled from caring and hands roughened from ministering to the closest one. Get Lost With Time Out Tokyo

Moments before embarking on a last-minute trip to Tokyo, I stopped in a bookstore in LAX in search of a guidebook on the city. I found only two: an overview of Japan (which was extraneous for this trip) and Time Out Tokyo. I purchased the latter, and was on my way.
I read the book cover to cover on the flight over. I felt well versed on many areas of the city and comfortable with choosing a path for my weeklong trip. Despite the author's ubiquitous sarcastic and often pessimistic tone, I was hoping to find fun and excitement in at least a couple of areas of the city.
Once there, however, I found I had to rely on other sources besides Time Out for some very important "touristy" information. While I realize it's impossible to include everything in one guidebook, there are certain things that, I feel, would've been extremely helpful to include in Time Out - which would elevate it from a "four star" nice-to-have to a "five star" must-have travel resource.
Case in point: there is no map of the train lines. There's a map of the subway system, and one of the Yamanote loop, but not one of the Yamanote connecting lines that run throughout the city - more or less, the backbone of the Tokyo train system (and my primary mode of transportation while there). I had to rely on a separate train line book for this information. Seems silly, when this information would have been easy enough to include in Time Out.
Also, there are suggested supplemental trips from Tokyo (further than one hour away) and, although there are general directions on getting there, there are no maps for the areas once you arrive.
What's more (astonishingly enough) - there is no comprehensive map of Tokyo, beyond the cluttered, blurry subway map and localized - very general, detail defunct - area maps. This would have been extremely helpful to have on more than one occasion. In fact, it should've been on the first page of the book.
I would have liked to see a larger section dedicated to Kichijoji - one of the cooler, livelier areas I visited during my stay. There is only a slight mention of it.
I would have also liked to see the Japanese characters accompanying some of the descriptions - especially for some of the more obscure areas (as you get further outside of Tokyo, the signs all switch from Romanji to characters).
Something else that would've been great is a general "tips and tricks" list for navigating around the city and understanding the culture.
Examples of tips might include:
- Walk/drive to the left!
- Plan to buy N'EX high-speed train tickets a day in advance and a half hour to one hour earlier than you would like to arrive at the airport, in case of delays (which I experienced)
- Note that some temples/shrines charge exorbitant rates, while other - equally impressive temples - are next-to-nothing or free.
- Although there is a brief section on ATMs more information should have been included regarding getting money once you're there. For instance, the CitiBank across the street from Shinjuku station takes American bank cards. The best advice: save yourself the hassle, exchange your money before you leave. (This was mentioned early in the book).
- Tips on traditional Japanese etiquette. Praying and showing respect at temples, shrines (eg. donations, washing hands, general information on ceremonies that may be taking place. Are you being disrespectful if you join, watch, speak, etc.?) Also, eating on the trains is frowned upon - as I found out the hard way.
Although the sarcastic tone of Time Out left me feeling as though the authors had no love for Tokyo, or Japan for that matter, I did find the book somewhat helpful - offering interesting, sometimes quirky tidbits on the city and culture. Who knew Excelsior Coffee had to change their green to blue because Starbucks threatened to sue? And, although I didn't make any visits to the love hotels, the section on how I could've was truly enlightening. And thank God for the section on how to use the non-Western toilets. I'd have been lost for sure.
If you're planning a trip to Tokyo and you don't mind buying a map, book of the connecting train lines and doing a bit of research on your own regarding other cool things to do, then you'll be satisfied with the supplemental information Time Out Tokyo provides.

Occasionally useful, but mostly just pretentious

Time Out works hard to present itself as youthful and offbeat, and labors so much over this image that the oh-so-hip tone often sounds phony. The writing seems more inspired by a quest to look trendy than an effort to express anything meaningful about the city. I particularly dislike the descriptions of various Tokyo neighborhoods, which come off as little more than bravado, and rather than making me excited about going to a place, they leave me feeling annoyed, as though some jackass were trying to impress me with how cool he is because he's been there.
But then again, we don't buy travel guides for their literary value alone (or at all, maybe). As for actual information, I'd say Time Out is quite comprehensive, although not as complete as Lonely Planet. It does include entertaining bits about Love Hotels..., which you're not likely to see in guides that aren't trying so hard to be alternative. I've only come across one factual error so far: the "Japan Gift Center" in Ginza appeared to have (long since) closed and was no longer at the address listed.
One reason I chose Time Out was that is one of the only books I could find that contained a Gay & Lesbian section. I give them some credit for at least thinking about this, but the 2 pages devoted to it are essentially useless, unless you want to know where you can go to have anonymous sex in the bushes, in which case this might be right up your "alley". If you're gay and also have a life, prepare yourself to be disappointed with Time Out. Here's some much more useful information in a nutshell: The gay neighborhood of Tokyo is Shinjuku-2-chome.....
A major drawback of this guide is the poor design of the maps of Tokyo neighborhoods in the back. They are well drawn and mark useful things, but are fatally flawed because there is no indication of which direction is north. I can hardly imagine how the editors missed such a glaring oversight, but somehow they did. Having been here for several weeks and pieced together an understanding of how the city is laid out, whenever I look back at these maps I can only laugh at what a joke they are. Not only is the compass not marked on the maps, but the orientation also varies from page to page. It's worse than useless; the maps in this book are likely to get you lost.
For a more authentically off-the-wall guide, I would say you are much better off with "Tokyo Q" by Rick Kennedy et al..., and "Little Adventures in Tokyo: 39 Thrills for the Urban Explorer", also by Rick Kennedy. For a comprehensive guide with fun but not such tragically-hip writing, go with "Lonely Planet".

The most practical guide to Tokyo by far

The one poor review this book has unfairly received has prompted me to put metaphorical pen to paper.
I have been living in Tokyo for over two years, and find this by far the most useful guidebook available. I've been through the Lonely Planet (no addresses, only phone numbers, how useful is that for non-Japanese speaking visitors?) and the Rough Guide (full of mistakes), and this is the only one that even comes close to bringing this disparate city to life.
I like the way the book as a whole is structured. It takes its time to tell you what is interesting about the various areas that make up Tokyo and leaves you to make your own mind up about whether you want to go there. Sure, the Time Out style may at times grate, but at least there IS a style. This is a book that has an attitude of its own. You may not like it, but at least you don't have to wade through the clumsy mundanities that pass for prose in the competition. Guide books that wear their hearts on their sleeves and provoke a reaction are all too scarce, and Time Out is to be applauded for venturing into areas where few others go.
One of these is the gay section. In my new edition, this has four pages, and the maps have served me well on many occasions, since I often carelessly leave my compass at home, preferring to navigate by the landmarks that are clearly marked on the maps. Other tips that I knew nothing about, even as a long-term resident, include dressing up for cheap tickets for the movies, and the location of two well hidden bars in Shibuya.
In short, I would recommend this book to anyone coming to Tokyo for any time from a few days to a few years. It makes the city sound like the fun place it is, rather than the sterile futurescape of western imaginings. The nightclubs section alone is worth the price of admission.
