A Great introduction to Poetry

I never really understood poetry until I read the book. The author takes the reader on the journey from our first poems as an infant "ga-ga" and "goo-goo" to some of the more complex rhyming structures. He explains how poetry is part of our language and the way we think.

The book is not meant for people who want to learn how to write poetry. It talks beautifully about the technique. It is detailed, robust and explores the flavors of the science with daring subtlety. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Boyle has been developing a growing reputation among lovers of rich comic writing for his handful of previous stories and novels. But World's End is one of those dramatic leaps forward that show an accomplished writer ambitiously and successfully lengthening his stride. It could easily be called a multigenerational saga, but that would give no idea of the depth of social and historical perspective Boyle brings to his tale. Set in the spectacular Hudson Valley country, an hour north of New York, World's End has all the elements of magic, fable, legend, and a sense of weather and landscape one more often finds in Southern writers. But it also shows a remarkable grasp of the continuity of culture over more than 300 years, effortlessly linking the stories of early Dutch settlers in the valley, the Indians they displaced and their descendants in the McCarthyite late 1940s and wild 1960s. The story, which moves with exceptional and convincing ease across the generations, is of the linked fates of the Van Brunt and Van Wart families. These have come down in modern times to Walter Van Brunt, a dreamer addled by drink and dope who loses both feet in motorbike accidents and who is haunted by figures and voices from the past, and Depeyster Van Wart, deeply conservative manufacturer and landowner, hanging on desperately to ancestral memories in a world he despises. Boyle is totally attuned to changing mores over the centuries, and broad enough in his sympathies to identify with the best in both conservative and rebel. Boyle treats these burghers and yeomen with such disdain that we know exactly how poor Walter feels to find himself abandoned at a party "full of drunken, grinning, suspicious, long-toothed, dog-faced, silly-ass strangers." Big family saga minus the cheap melodrama

T C Boyle's Pen/Faulkner Award winning novel "World's End" looks like a daunting read. It's after all over 450 pages long and boasts a cast of characters that spans several generations and makes Tolstoy's "War and Peace" seem like a cosy family drama. It's hard work initially figuring out who's who and this is complicated by Boyle making us jump backwards and forwards alternating between the 17th and 20th Century, but once you get into a groove, it's no sweat. "World's End" is a multigenerational family saga with all the pyrotechnics you'd expect but Boyle expertly skirts and avoids melodrama. The themes of real estate, power, race, class and betrayal are worked to their fullest and the effect is nothing short of stunning. All quite old fashionedly powerful stuff except for Boyle's quirky sense of humour (eg, Walter van Brunt's accidents) that nudges the novel somewhere left field. Boyle's own empathy for the hippy movement of the 1960s also lends an authencity to the "present day" developments. The novel is really about Walter's search for his mysteriously missing black sheep of a father, Truman - an enigma till the end - and as he drives himself and others crazy discovering his past and how the histories of three feuding clans are inextricably bound by blood, hatred and deceit, he comes face to face with the shocking truth that in three hundred years, nothing changes and humanity is powerless against the forces that threaten to engulf them. Boyle is a great storyteller. His prose is exotic, colourful, always compelling and a joy to read. Reading "World's End" takes commitment and dedication but the reward makes it all worthwhile. This is one novel nobody who loves serious literature should miss. Highly recommended.

shed his grace on (some) of thee

Boyle shows us with breathtaking style how the powerful stay powerful and the powerless stay powerless. By writing about the same two families in both the 17th and the 20th centuries and spelling out in shattering detail how little changed their social relations are, Boyle gives the American Dream a good dope slap. Anyone who finds this book boring or hard to follow needs to stop watching so much television and get an attention span.
Boyle was one angry young writer and I think his venom has ebbed somewhat over the years, which is a good thing for him personally, but might cost his writing. I stopped reading him at _Road to Wellville_, which I thought was silly, but after hearing a recent interview with him about _Riven Rock_, I may try to catch up.
I think that _World's End_ is his best book because it is about his hometown. Maybe he has lived in southern California long enough now to write about that area and its people just as well.

Great Book for relunctant readers.

I'm constantly at my 11 year son to read and I'm always on the lookout for books that will keep him interested and foster a love of books. Someone suggested that William Sleator would do the trick. He thought the book was hysterical and it made for a great summer read for him. I would suggest it for anyone trying to get a boy to read.

I thought this book was excellent because it was about William Sleator and his family with real funny stories. One of the things that I thinkabout this book was that you don't know if the stories William Sleator is telling are reaaly true until the end of the book.William Sleator shares strange and wacky stories about growing up with his mother,farther,his brothers,Danny and Tycho,and his sister vicky. For example ,William's family never took care of their front yard because they only used their backyard,so they never mowed or planted anything in it. The dad,a physicist,used to blindfold the kids and take them for a ride in the car. He would then drop them off in an unfamiliar area and tell them to find their way home. William's dad would give them one dime to cll home if they could not find their way. This was a weekend game they sometimes played. A positive effect I thought this book might have on its reader is to teach kids that it's ok to not be popular. William Sleator said that people should like you for the way you are, not the way you look or how athletic you are. William and his friends were in an unpopular group because they chose to be happy the way they were. They still had fun. One thing I thought might have a negative effect on readers would have to be stories Sleator tells about him, his sister, Vicky, and their friends doing "pituh-plays". William Sleator says "pituh-plays" are skits "often inspired by real people or situations or by unpopular movies and books". One of the meanest "pituh-plays" they ever played was with Vicki and her friends. They went to a fountain at a park with a watermelon wrapped up like a baby. They pretended to be mad and yelled at the baby (watermelon), held it over the fountain, and then threw it in. The watermelon juice would look like blood at first. Some people watching would call the police. I thought this book was great, but it was a little too short. I would love to hear more funny and exciting things that happened to William Sleator and his family.

Fascinating

This is William Sleator's account of his wacky childhood with his fascinating family of big fat weirdos.
Sleator makes it clear that he (along with his family) was an ODDBALL--that is, not a misfit, just somebody who was always doing something weird--these stories are guaranteed to amuse you, no matter what your age.
I have read this book many times--and I would've given it 5 stars, but it recently dropped down one spot in my mind. In the last chapter, Sleator tells of one part where he fibbed and stretched the truth a bit--so I had always figured, everything else must be true, if he's willing to say that little part was fictional.
And I hate to steal anybody's enjoyment of how amazingly weird the people depicted in this little book are, but I have to tell the truth: The last time I finished reading this, I looked in the very front of the book, at the page with all the publication info--
My feelings were a bit hurt when I saw in small print a few words that changed the way I felt: 'ALL CHARACTERS AND EVENTS DESCRIBED IN THIS BOOK ARE FICTIONAL.' I really hope that's just an obligatory disclaimer.
Even if you have to suspend your disbelief, believe me, you'll enjoy!

About the Author
Katherine Paterson has written numerous children's book including Lyddie, The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks, and Jip, His Story. Her books have received much acclaim and been published world-wide. Among her many literary honors are two Newbery Medals and two National Book Awards. She received the 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Medal as well as the 2006 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for the body of her work. She lives with her husband, John, in Barre, Vermont. They have four children and seven grandchildren.

Lyddie: A book with many important issues...

When I first read Lyddie, I just thought it was a good story about a teenaged girl who was determined to have money to own the family farm and reunite her family. However, after some reflection, I realize that this book was more than that. It focuses upon working conditions, women's rights, sexual harrassment, illiteracy...important issues for today as well as the 1840 world of Lyddie. Lyddie is a young girl who is forced to grow up in order to support herself and one day have enough money for her family. She must go to the mill jobs in Lowell, Massachusetts to make the money. The working conditions are horrible, but Lyddie becomes the most productive worker there because she is driven to make money. She is, in today's terms, sexually harrassed by the overseer, but she still presses on. At one point, her need for money and security is so great that she won't even sign a petition for better working conditions, even though some of her friends are getting sick. Also, an issue in this book is an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, which caused a lot of humiliation for women in the world of 1840. One of Lyddie's acquaintances is pregnant, but luckily finds someone to take her in as a servant.
Another important issue in this book is the need to be able to read. When Lyddie first arrives in Lowell, she can't read. But she listens to her roommates read Oliver Twist, and she is fascinated by the story and wants to learn how to read. It is "strategy" on the part of Patterson that they are reading this particular novel. Oliver Twist is about an orphan who must work, which is similar to Lyddie's predicament. In fact, I have heard Lyddie been called an "Oliver Twist for girls."
I highly recommend this book for young adults. It would work well for social science classes that are studying the 1800s or the working conditions throughout history. It is interesting to read, but it also contains issues that are relevant to today's world...and to today's teenagers. Most importantly, I think this book stresses the importance of determination, perseverance, and the need to take a stand for what is right. I believe these are qualities all people need to read about!

Lyddie---A Piece of History in a Touching Story

Hi. I'm in the sixth grade. Our teacher gave us a list of books we could use for our book reports, and I chose Lyddie because it looked good. I was not mistaken even though I judged just from the cover. It was a terrific book. It takes place in the Industrail Revolution. It's about a bright, hardworking farm girl who is forced to leave her farm because her mother made it so she had to work. But she is fired from her job, because she went to see her farm. She heard that they get high pay in factories, so she goes south to one and is hired. She becomes the best worker there, working hard with dreams to get her family back together with the money she earns. Eventually she learns to read, annd books become very special to her. She copies Oliver Twist out page by page and pastes it on her work area and reads little snatches of it in her little spare time untile she practically knows it by heart. In this way she learns how to read well. But then her mother dies and her father gives permission to sell their farm. Lyddie can no longer hope to rebuy the farm. The man who tells her that brings her little sister Rachel. Rachel isn't allowed on the premises, but a kind lady makes an exception and Lyddie takes care of Rachel until her brother can take her back. When a neighbor of hers, Mr. Luke STevens, asks to marry her so she'll have someone to get support from, she refuses. Then mr. Marson, the dirty overseer there, tries to rape a girl and she puts a pan over his head. He finds an excuse to fire her, saying she's influencing the other girls in a bad way. She leaves and decides to go to college. While I skipped a lot of important stuff in this review, I hope it makes you want to read the book for yourself. It's great.

I am a fifth grader in Massachusets and I read the book Lyddieby Katherine Paterson. I thought that it was a good book. This bookis about a girl naned Lyddie whose dad goes West to look for wealth. Her mom sends her and her brother off to be indentured. A little while later, Lyddie is dismissed because she went on a vacation. Then, she goes off to work at a mill in Lowell. Lyddie tries to make enough money to bring family back together but while she works at the mill a series of events change her life forever. I would recommend this book for anyone ten or older who is studing the Industrial Revloution.

Barbara Trapido's golden novel about loss is an Alice in Wonderland for grownups. From its haunting start--"Early on in the morning of my interview, I woke up and saw my dead sister"--to its final, endless irony, The Travelling Hornplayer zips with plot twists and character turns, shocking revelations and desperate reactions. Any attempt at summary is dizzying, but here are a few hints: for three years, Ellen Dent has been devastated by the loss of her younger sister, who had struck famous novelist Jonathan Goldman as having "the pleasing air of one who plans to easily pass through this life, collecting admirers at tennis parties." Nonetheless, Lydia's charmed teenage existence had come to a quick end, courtesy of a car, outside Jonathan's North London flat after his daughter, Stella, turned her away, mistaking her for his mistress, Sonia. Sonia herself will later crop up in the Cotswolds as the temporary lodger of Jonathan's beloved wife--and I won't even begin to unravel Stella's super-disconcerting tale. I will, however, say that the book contains several other matchless, larger-than-life characters and strands, which mesh together into a sparky, tragicomic puzzle.

In Trapido's world all is not what it seems, to put it mildly. She is a gifted comic writer because she knows tragedy is just around every corner. Since 1982 and the publication of her Whitbread-winning novel, Brother of the More Famous Jack, her buoyant, allusive roundelays have proved that she has a knack for the ways gifted families work--and the ways they most definitely do not. She is also a brilliant commingler of life and art. When Lydia Dent contacts novelist Jonathan Goldman to ask his help in writing an essay on the poems of German Romantic Wilhelm Muller (set to music by Schubert as Die schone Mullerin), she unwittingly sets in motion a complex tragicomedy of errors that eventually brings together star-crossed characters: Lydia's sister Ellen; Jonathan's daughter Stella, who is Ellen's friend at Edinburgh University; Izzy Tench, a scuzzy yet brilliant painter who fathers Stella's child; Peregrine (Pen) Massingham, whom Stella marries; Jonathan's wife, Katherine, who befriends Jonathan's lover, Sonia, who is patron to Izzy; Jonathan's brother Roger, who late in the story falls in love with Ellen. As Trapido's characters experience love, loss, grief and plucky survival, the narrative twists are accomplished with a sleight of hand so subtle that the reader is often stunned. Trapido's dry wit and acerbic observations, especially of Britain's class system, are consistently engaging. Her depiction of Pen's very Catholic, very parsimonious, aggressively athletic Scottish family is worth the price of the book alone.

The title of British novelist Trapido's fifth novel comes from a collection of poems by Wilhelm Muller set to music by Schubert. One might likewise call this novel a collection of movements, each featuring a soloist and each revealing a different perspective on the story. The connections among the various soloists and the twist of fate that leads to the death of one of the characters, an innocent victim whose perspective we are not given, is reminiscent of Iris Murdoch's Book and the Brotherhood (LJ 12/87) but lacks its depth and detail. Though the novel falls into brief periods of shallow voyeuristic prose, it is for the most part compelling, and the rough patches can be forgiven as the story unwinds and the protagonist finally has her moment of self-revelation. This is my first Barbara Trepido book- And i'm absolutely delighted with it! The different storytellers in the book brings to life the plot with their personal narration. Each spin their part of the tale by recounting their life experiences, and this culminates in an intricately woven plot littered with unexpected revelations that fit perfectly together like lost pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. As the plot unfolds, the characters' lives unfold before us, and one cannot help but feel for them and even relating to them. Bizarre and almost exotic their lives may be, yet there are qualities in Barbara's characters that the reader can identify with. In the midst of admiring them for their talent and beauty, we pity Ellen for the loss of her sister; we wonder at, yet understand Katherine's maniacal zeal in caring for her daughter; we shrug at Stella's fragile sense of insecurity and over-commitment to her boyfriend. Barbara explores love, loss and betrayal, death, lonliness and ingratitude in her quirky and comical manner, interspersed with allusions to Wilheim Muller and Conrad which seem to be the connecting thread throughout the novel. The plot comes full circle, the ending even if a little too coincidental, pulls the curtains on this story to a splendid close, deserving of a standing ovation.

Intriguing, yet warm and personal - beautifully written

"The Travelling Hornplayer" is the first I've read of Barbara Trapido's and it won't be the last. It's such a pleasure reading this finely written yet understated gem of novel I didn't want it to end. It's hard to describe the type of novel TH is because it's got all the elements of mystery, intrigue, personal tragedy, loss and betrayal that provide the natural ingredients for a great novel but it is only in Trapido's expert hands that all these elements come together to produce a finely judged and balanced whole. The novel is personal, warm and engaging. Her characters - without exception, down to the minor ones - are brilliantly defined and come to life. They leap out at you from the pages like real human beings because they're neither good nor bad, just people with all their frailties. Recounted in flashback and by rotation through the eyes of Ellen, Jonathan and Stella, Trapido weaves together personal contemplation, plot development and social commentary into a complex mosaic of splendour and intrigue. Lydia, a ghost-like figure hovering over the proceedings, is the catalyst for the novel's dramatic development. She is also the glue that binds the loose pieces together. Trapido's genius is to engineer a denouement that is emotionally congruent, satisfying and uplifting. Amidst the avalanche of new titles being published each week, it is easy to miss this wonderfully little gem of a novel. It would have escaped my attention had it not won the Whitbread Prize award. Please don't miss it. "The Travelling Hornplayer" deserves to be read by all who love good literature.

"If you write for a living," says Jefferson D. Bates in Writing with Precision, "this book is probably not for you." But if what you do for a living involves writing, then this book can help you do so "clearly, concisely, and PRECISELY." Bates is fond of italics, boldface, CAPS, exclamations!, quirky footnotes, and the word crotchet. He's over 80. He's been editorial director of the U.S. Air Force's Effective Writing Program and a chief speechwriter for NASA. The cornerstone of his campaign is the elimination of bureaucratese and jargon. Writing with Precision, originally published in 1978, is divided into four parts: writing (mainly letters, memos, instructions, regulations, and reports), editing (mostly copyediting), usage, and exercises. There is a definite personality behind this readable, conversational book. It's mostly updated, though a little checking by Bates could have prevented the reference to some books as being "probably out of print now."

About the Author
Jefferson D. Bates has served as Editorial Director of the Air Force "Readable Writing" Program, and as the Chief of NASA's speechwriting group. After leaving government service, he became president and CEO of Speak/Write Systems, Inc., a firm specializing in teaching writing and speaking skills. The author of five nonfiction books, he lives in Reston, Virginia.

Thank you Mr. Jefferson Bates

I picked up this book because I was tired of never knowing for sure what the rules are when it comes to writing and grammer. I was surprised at how easy a read this book was. Mr. Bates has a true knack (or skill) of making a somewhat boring subject quite interesting indeed. The more I read, the more I wished I could just sit down and talk to this man in person. A very interesting read by a very interesting author. If you are a new writer looking for some guidence, or an old hack who has forgotten some of the basics, then this is a great place to start.

Precisely Right

Excellent writing guide for the professional who is not necessarily a professional writer, but must write on the job frequently to occasionally. The material, which could have been a little dry and boring, is kept lively by the author's personal anecdotes and witty asides. This writing guide is more complicated than Strunk and White's "Elements of Style", and I don't recommend it for the beginner. Consider adding "Writing with Precision" as the next level of enhancement after reading "Elements of Style" and William Zinsser's "On Writing Well".

Straight to the point

Although english is a second language for me, I was looking for a book to improve my writing. I found that in this book and more: tips to be understood, to communicate effectively and to write with correct grammar. This author, a man with years of experience, has written a great book to enjoy and learn.

compassion and understranding

Dear Readers, I am 37 years old and havent read this book since 1974 but I remember it as one of the books that helped form my character. I had nothing in common with Fran as a child. My childhood was easy. Fran had to deal with issues that many adults can not handle and it was through her eyes that I saw a different world. Sad and depressing? Well, I can only say that this book wasn't just fluff and silliness.( not that there is anything wrong with fluff and silliness sometimes) This story taught me something about compassion for others and understanding. I remember seeing my less fortunate classmates in a different light. The bears' house that Fran looked at but didnt play with touched me deeply and I could understand her wanting to go to the Bears' house as an escape from reality. I remember father bear telling her to persevere. I remember looking that word up in the dictionary and feeling empowered. So many times growing up and even now as an adult that advice proved to be solid. I read so many great books as a child. This one was very different from all the rest and I have verbally recomended it to people over the years but never without a few tears. Yes I recomend this book to children in the nine and up crowd. Although I was a middle class suburban child I think this book has something for children in other social economic groups as well. This story although sad made you feel hopeful and that all things are possible.

A Classic for Children and Adults Alike

I first fell in love with "The Bear's House" as a shy, unpopular bookworm of a ten year old, who found a kindred spirit in Fran Ellen, the trying, picked on, "welfare kid" protagonist who escapes into a dollhouse fantasy world as she struggles to deal with poverty, class bullies and a mentally-ill mother. I stayed in love with the Bear's House as a twenty-seven year old confident, outspoken, social worker, who sees too many Fran Ellens in her day to day work. The Bear's House is a must read for children and adults alike- it's prose is blunt but eloquent, and it's message both tragic and hopeful. It paints a perfect picture of a child often forgotten in children's literature- worn out, tired, but without a completely happy ending. A read that not only delights children, but enlightens adults. Highly recommended for classroom read alouds and discussions.

strange and interesting character

Fran Ellen is a likable character despite her problems. And the strange way of acting at school. I really wanted Fran Ellen to get that prize and I was so glad the teacher was nice after all. Those mean girls were the worst! This writer can really make the readers feel what it is like to be someone no one likes at school like Fran Ellen. Yet I admired Fran Ellen a lot. She was good to the baby and I liked the way she played with the bear's house.

Kostman, a licensed Big Apple locksmith, certainly gets around the city in the pursuit of his profession. In his debut as an author (no license required), he offers a view of a few of the people and sights glimpsed beyond the doors he unlocks. This slender volume is a compilation of the odd scenes Kostman has run into over the years and the peculiar dialogues in which he was a bemused participant. The slices of life are as abundant and fragrant as a Broadway deli's pastrami on rye. As he changes tumblers or replaces lost keys, the intrepid journeyman encounters human interest with a vengeance, from 11-year-old Gloria, who looks after her apparently senile Papi, to the aging Mrs. Herzog, who believes her sister is robbing her blind. Kostman releases those locked in and lets in those locked out (never, it seems, feeling the need to verify the customer's right of passage). Bedeviled by jammed doors are doctors and gypsies, musicians and welfare clients, a psychiatrist and an East Side matron who could use one, a clandestine fireworks dealer and a troupe of naked old men. All converse freely and at length with the compliant locksmith/scribe. They may live in the precincts of poverty or in areas of affluence- -with no relationship to willingness to pay the locksmith's fee-- but most of the little dramas seem to happen in dark or dank places. ``The fish and piss odors produce an overpowering stench'' in one locale. ``At the bottom,'' in another, ``the alley is dark and everything is covered with bird shit.'' These are New York kinds of tales. Short stories by a locksmith with the key to a little Pandora's box of urban yarns. Amusing, reassuring vignettes

Joel is just a nice guy -- no questions there. He's also insightful and humble so he can let a story tell itself without trying to show off his ability to write. His writing style reminds me of a baseball umpire -- an umpire is at his best when you don't even realize he's umpiring the game. Joel's stories are like that -- they just smoothly tell themselves without too much editorializing and too much dramatization. He also doesn't use his book as an opportunity to list the litany of freaks, kooks, and morons he's undoubtedly dealt with in his locksmith years in NYC. These are funny stories, but they are more about everyday people and what they do to fill their time and make ends meet. It's the type of book that reassures you about the quality of people around you and makes you realize how extraordinary an ordinary life can be. It's a quick read, a few hours at most, but it's well worth it. I only wish there were more books by this author.

Memorable characters and situations

Joel Kostman provides at least two essential services: locksmithing and storytelling. He is calm, smart, and - this unfolds with the stories - a careful observer-participant. In addition he is often saving the day for his characters, and he is humble.
These stories are great and short (as in, most are ten or fewer pages long) but each with a distinct purpose. You also find out that the narrator's brother, now schizophrenic, was once a Professor of Philosophy - and that Kostman knows an important moment when he meets one. He likes people, and they like him. You understand why.
This is a fine collection of stories that are unpretentious, elegantly simple, and very humane.

The theme is deceptively simple: a New York locksmith goes out to fix a lock, takes care of business, gets paid and goes home. But in Joel Kostman's world, this is merely the backdrop for a series of strange and wonderful encounters with complete strangers who literally open their homes and hearts to this man who appears neutral and non-intrusive while quietly observing every minute detail of the inner lives of these "ordinary" people. In a series of 14 stories told in the first person, Mr. Kostman reveals a level of compassion and observation uncommon to the bluecollar business he is in. He is a very gifted writer who also happens to be a locksmith. With this debut volume we are introduced to an original voice that is both touching and hilarious.

The humans don't have a clue as to who the culprit is, but the trail of the fur-loving Cruella de Vil, who will stop at nothing to have a Dalmatian fur coat!

Martin Jarvis is one of Britain's most distinguished actors. Now a resident of Lost Angeles, he recently starred in By Jeeves, the acclaimed Andrew Lloyd Webber production. Mr. Jarvis has appeared in many award-winning West End and Royal National Theater productions as well as many films and international television programs. He was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2000 by the Queen for his services to drama.

The first and still the best

The live-action Disney version of this book was the pits. The animated version wasn't bad at all (I own it). But the book is better than either of them. And, like all the best kids' books, this one, though written for 8-14's, can still be enjoyed when you're way past childhood.
Disney necessarily simplified the story and characters for his movie versions, cutting out a lot of the subtle characterization and background that makes the book seem so completely plausible. Here, instead of "Roger and Anita," we have "the Dearlys," a businessman and his bride, who are "owned" by Pongo and--not Perdita, but "Missis"--and have not one "Nanny" but two, "Nanny Cook" (a real cook) and "Nanny Butler" (a real butler). We learn of Cruella deVil's sinister family history, her furrier husband (never mentioned in the films), and her obsession with furs. We learn that her employees, the Baddun Brothers, dream of appearing on "What's My Crime?" Many of the Pongos' pups--Lucky, Patch, Cadpig, Roly--are fleshed out as they never were on the screen. The sheepdog Colonel is less of a buffoon and more a shrewd strategist. The drama of the puppies' births and early lives is much better portrayed, as is the journey of Pongo and Missis to Suffolk to rescue their stolen family, with introductions to the dogs that help them on their way--the hospitable Golden Retriever, the aged Spaniel and his "pet," 90-year-old Sir Charles, the flighty Irish Setter whose efforts come to naught through a fire, and the tough Staffordshire who occupies the moving van the Dalmatians board to shorten their homeward trip. Cruella's white Persian cat is here too--a clever animal "biding her time" as she waits for the opportunity to settle the score for her drowned litters--and so is the sheepdog's "pet," two-year-old Tommy Tompkins, who lends his toy hay-cart to the army of London-bound dogs. Yet despite a certain anthropomorphization, all the animals are recognizably animals; they behave as such and don't do anything you couldn't visualize such creatures doing. The humor is much more subtle than in the films, no doubt reflecting Smith's British personality. There are episodes like the brief rest in a country church and the Dalmatians' revenge against Cruella that would have made great theater. I still enjoy the animated version, but I keep coming back to the book.

Better than the movie

This book is wonderful. When Disney changed it into a movie, the story lost many of its special touches, and the story was no longer told so much as shown from the dog's perspective.

The main plot of the story is similar to that of Disney's animated movie, but contains many small differences, and more detail. These differences are what make the book as good as it is. In the book, right after Pongo and his wife Missus Pongo have their 15 puppies, everyone is worried about how one dog will feed 15 puppies without losing strength. The solution to their problem comes in the form of a stray Dalmatian, found on the side of the road, whom they name Perdita. Perdita has a history of her own, and her sub-plot is one of the many things that add depth to the story, but were lost in the movie.

The story is told, continuously, from a dog's point of view. It is mentioned how humans believe that they own dogs; whereas the truth is that the dogs own them. Pongo and Missus continually refer to their humans as their pets, and one can see that mentality in their conversations. All the dogs in the story seem to enjoy doting on their humans. Another interesting quirk is how the dogs are `married'. Pongo continually refers to Missus as his wife, and she calls him husband. A dog's marriage ceremony does not seem to take very long, or require a priest or government official. Two willing dogs can run off into the forest, and when they come back, be married. Puppies will most likely come soon after.

Throughout the book are scattered illustrations. These pictures are done in black, white, and shades of grey, and look like well-shade pencil drawings. They are beautiful, and very life-like.

A wonderful book, it is much better than Disney's movie. Full of fun tales, even in the midst of the puppies flight from Cruella's house.

A review for the parents, with some dog advice

I won my tattered, dog eared, Disyned-fied copy of "100 Dalmatians" in a school auction when I was 7 years old. I learned to read late because I'm dyslexic (hence any bad spelling you may notice) so this was the first real chapter book that I ever owned and the very first I read.

It was great. This is a fabulous novel for all ages but especially for kids. I'm not going to re-hash the plot because I think the whole world knows it by now. The themes of good parenting, loyalty, and of course, good, intelligent, kind dogs are things that every child should learn. It is true that this book contains some talk of puppy killing, which didn't disturb me, and I'm guessing that today's 7 year olds wouldn't be scared by it either.

Another reason to read, or let your child read this book is that it will encourage a love of dogs, and having grown up with dogs every minute of my life, I can tell you having one (or more) helps immensely in all kinds of situations, social and otherwise. It provides an example of love and loyalty, as well as the responsibility involved in feeding and caring for a dog. However on that note Dalmatians, contrary to the lovable Pongo, Missus and Perdita in this book, do not make good dogs for children. They don't have the temperament for it. If you read this book and decide to get a dog for your child (an excellent idea) I recommend a good old fashioned mutt (they're smarter because they're not inbred) or a border collie, which can actually be trained to be nannies for children because of their sheep herding instincts.

Anyway, five stars. Great for the whole family, and an excellent way to encourage reading in a child of any age. At 18 years old I still love reading this book. And the sequel, "The Twilight Barking" isn't half bad either.
