From Publishers Weekly
Perpetually bereft of funds, the rascally Lovejoy once again relies on charm, guile and luck to replenish his supply of groats, make "smiles" with various women and keep from getting interfered with by the Plod. Beautiful young Irma Dominick, trained by Lovejoy to steal, gets arrested by the Plod for trying to lift a jug from an auction house. And Irma's aunt Jocina wants Lovejoy to identify antiques that will be sold supposedly to fund a failing prioryAwhose prior, Lovejoy believes, is "making smiles" with Jocina behind her husband's back. That same prior wants Lovejoy to identify antiques that he can sell to support his gambling debts. Reconnoitering the abbey with his pal Gesso, Lovejoy finds a valuable painting that he nicks and disguises. Then, traveling incognito as the famous impresario Jonno Rant, Lovejoy trails Jocina and the prior to the Channel Islands, all the while pretending to set up an entertainment spectacular. But the project is usurped by the real Rant, and Lovejoy's life is threatened by more than one group interested in the painting. With this dervish of comic activity and a romp that ends in a circuslike venue, Gash is in top form. Fans will celebrate Lovejoy's 20th outing (after The Possessions of a Lady, 1996) as a welcome return of one of the most unusual characters in mysteryland.

From Library Journal
Lovejoy appraises the antiques of Albansham priory, whose prior has gambled away its funds?and maybe done worse.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Once again (for the twentieth time) we plunge into the seamy life of charming rapscallion Lovejoy (Different Women Dating, 1997, etc.), a whiz at recognizing the true antique and at knowing everything about it but a miserable failure at most anything else. This time, he's involved with one Irma Dominick, who, with Lovejoy's coaching, has stolen an antique Buckingham jug from Gimbert's Antique House. Turns out the jug belongs to Irma's aunt Jocina Crucifex, whose brother is the Reverend George Metivier, head of the Albansham Priory and reputed to be deeply mired in gambling debt. Metivier wants Lovejoy to assess, secretly, the Priory's antique treasures, and Lovejoy enlists Gesso, his longtime friend and professional thief, to help. Within days, Gesso has disappeared and Lovejoy fears the worst. A search for any clue to Gesso's whereabouts leads Lovejoy to the Channel Island of Guernsey where he winds up running a show for famed impresario Jonno Rant, trusting all the wrong people but at last learning Gesso's fate and the secret of Albansham Priory. With a new character, a new bedmate, and a new scam on almost every page, the plot is evanescentto be enjoyed for Lovejoy's unapologetic chutzpah and for his author's breezy narration and vast knowledge, willingly shared, of the antiques world. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Joyful fans will love the latest Lovejoy novel
By A Customer
Irma hires antiques expert Lovejoy to teach her how to swipe a necklace. Though reluctant to be her tutor, Lovejoy cannot resist helping the beautiful young woman even if the jewelry she wants to steal is vulgar trash. However, she is caught trying to abscond with a Rottingham fake jug.
Irma's entry into Lovejoy's life opens the door for her wealthy Aunt, Mrs. Crucifex, and her uncle Reverend George Metivier to enter Lovejoy's life. All George wants from the scoundrel is his assistance in selling the Albansham priory "manufactured antiques". Instead of working with pale imitations, Lovejoy soon finds himself searching for a missing associate, a valuable painting, and George even as he struggles to simply stay alive.
Fans of the Lovejoy series know why the novels are always bestsellers. Anyone who has not read one of the books until this one, THE RICH AND THE PROFANE, will quickly learn why these tales are such fan favorites. The twentieth story is as fresh as the first book. Lovejoy remains a joy, loved by his myriad of fans. The story line is an entertaining mystery, but Lovejoy thankfully still occupies the prime seat. Jonathan Gash is heading back to the top of the lists again.

Lovejoy is back and better than ever!
By R. Frye
After the last two books by Jonathan Gash digging into the seamier side of London, and the sex trade, with his new heroine, he has graced us with new Lovejoy mystery. Some of his entourage is missing, no Tinker, and no new trainee, but he does succeed in making smiles, stealing antiques, breaking and entering, and impersonating a rock star. You never know what to expect from Lovejoy and he does not disappoint. Just when you think you figured it all out, a surprise ending. One of his best books in years, you will enjoy it.

Is Gash running out of ideas?
By A Customer
Easily the worst in the Lovejoy series. I've read them all, and half of them twice. Although there are some charming sections, and a brand new setting to explore, Gash's Lovejoy largely rehashes his philosophy without adding anything new. I'd felt that I had read it all before, and better said in earlier versions. In fact, I was shocked to learn that he was continuing the series after such a lackluster performance--though I was greatly pleased because I love the character and the stories. So, I'll buy the new one and chalk this up to being one mistake in twenty

The Religion of Technology: The Divinity of Man and the Spirit of Invention, by David F. Noble

Are religion and science really at war with one another? Not according to David F. Noble, who argues that the flourishing of both religion and technology today is nothing new but rather the continuation of a 1,000-year-old Western tradition.

The Religion of Technology demonstrates that modern man's enchantment with things technological was inspired by and grounded in religious expectations and the quest for transcendence and salvation. The two early impulses behind the urge to advance in science, he claims, are the conviction that apocalypse is imminent, and the belief that increasing human knowledge helps recover what was lost in Eden. Noble traces the history of these ideas by examining the imaginings of monks, explorers, magi, scientists, Freemasons, and engineers, from Sir Isaac Newton to Joseph Priestley to Wernher von Braun.

Noble suggests that the relationship between religion and technology has perhaps outlived its usefulness. Whereas it once aimed to promote human well-being, it has ultimately become a threat to our survival. Thus, with The Religion of Technology, Noble aims to redirect our efforts toward more worldly and humane ends.

...good insight into why western technology is western...
By Chris J Farrell
I suppose most people like me have wondered why technology has advanced so rapidly in western societies but so little in, say, India or in Africa. I first noticed this through the work of Joseph Needham. I went to an excellent lecture of his with the unforgettable title "The Pre-Natal History of the Steam Engine". The Chinese had many of the precursors to the steam engine but didn't put them together. I've seen this rise of western technology attributed to Christianity in western cultures but never in a very convincing way. David Noble has convinced me. In the first part of the book he shows the explicit influence of two passages in the Bible, one from Genesis and one from Daniel. It is an academic style of writing. You've got to want to read it but its worth it. I wanted to know much more in depth about the role of the monasteries in developing technology. I found myself looking up the origin of Benedictine liqueur (from an apothecary in a monastery). When it comes to the present day the book is weak. He dwells on the religious views of current or recent scientists. Since most of the American population is theist and attends church its not surprising that scientists also espouse religious values. To make a great point out of this is redundant. After reading this book I wanted to go further but was disappointed to have my appetite so whetted but not yet satisfied. Chris.

People are giving this book less credit than it deserves....
By JM Showalter
This is a good book and a bit of a fun read though in its nature-- in what it tries to be-- it alienates itself from whatever group is intended to be its core audience. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile and well-written; though I gather than some, from its reviews, have had some problems with its difficulty and subject matter.
This is meant, I think, to be a popular book rather than an academic text. The author has his story-line and sticks too it fairly well: as with any 'popular' book, if you dig from one discipline into its minutia, you're going to find flaws and biases. Books can be great still. Because it is a popular book dealing with more or less of an arcane area, it does have a tendency to ramble between lots of stuff that most people generally haven't heard of: if you sit back and let the whole picture come into focus, I have found, in the end, you're still left with a worthwhile read.
To the reviewer who said that this book only focused on the development of technology and its interplay with religion in the West: it could be argued that only in the West could the author's thesis be proved: religious devotion was a cause of technolgical development and not vice-versa (i.e. religion/religious groups reacted to technology in the form of change in doctrine, practice, etc.: like the development of the different 'modern' branches of Judaism in the nineteenth century OR changes in Islam toward fundamentalist, anti-Western belief caused partially by technology... I can't think of any better non-Western examples...)
This is a worthwhile read; I'm pretty sure that its worth the fifteen dollars or whatever it costs. Buy it if you're in the mood for a challenging, good read on this sort of subject matter....

Return to the Technological Eden
By A Customer
This book would more accurately be titled "Christianity and Technology," as Noble treats his subject exclusively from a Western perspective. He provides a good overview of religious motivations for scientific and technological progress from medieval times to the American space program and Human Genome Project. Especially inspiring to these researchers and inventors have been apocalyptic expectations and the impulse to recreate the original relationship between God and humans in Eden. However, the book suffers in the last chapters as Noble examines modern research in genetics, artificial intelligence, space flight, and nuclear weaponry, and the author's thesis that religion is inciting dangerous developments in these fields is a weak one.

"The moving story of a life dedicated to the fight for freedom."—Booklist

About the Author
Elizabeth Yates (1905–2001), prolific American author, won the 1951 Newbery Medal for her novel Amos Fortune, Free Man. She also received a Newbery Honor in 1944 for Mountain Born.

Nora Unwin (1907–1982) illustrated more than one hundred books for children.

From AudioFile
Elizabeth Yates deservedly won the Newbery Award for AMOS FORTUNE, FREE MAN in the pre-politically correct days of 1951. This carefully researched biography brings to life a man and era overlooked in history books. Born a prince in Africa, At-mun was captured at age 15, sold at a Boston slave auction, given the name Amos, taught to read, and trained as a tanner. Six decades later, he buys his freedom and, eventually, the freedom of others. Ray Childs's deep, melodious voice breathes life into a man who maintained his princely dignity through the indignities of slavery. Hearing the documents of manumission, the process by which a slave could be liberated, read in the formal language of the Colonial period underlines the authenticity of the story. Slavery exposed and triumphantly overcome
By Reginald D. Garrard
Amos Fortune, Free Man" succeeds on many levels. It is an accurate piece of historical fiction, dramatizing the events and people that filled the early days of colonial America. It is compassionate in its approach to the irony and hypocrisy of the times. It is a fitting tribute to all slaves who endured unspeakable hardships from slave to free man.
The author begins the story with Amos's life, as Prince At-mun, in the wilds of Africa. The subjugation into slavery and the trip along the Middle Passage is told with accuracy and strength.
As an African-American, I was moved by the enduring qualities exhibited by this man, his unwavering desire to be free, his longing to help others, and his pride in himself.
All the characters in the book are representative of the citizens of the day. The book is noticeably free of the vilest of the slave owners, but the thought of forced servitude by one man on the other is horrible enough.
Descriptive writing of the setting makes the reader feel that he or she is in the hold of the great slave ship, is walking along the busy port cities of New England, and is enjoying the majestic beauty of New Hampshire's mountains.
Amos Fortune never really resigns himself to the fact that he is a slave. This constant vigilance for self-rule is the abiding theme throughout. A strong sense of independence is presented in the man's words and deeds.
The novel provides the reader with a realistic view of how things really were. By also including the language used in documents of the period, the author contrasts the brevity of modern tongue with the wordiness of colonial times. This enhances the authenticity of the text.
The book is a triumph of man over adversity. It is a worthwhile addition to any child's literary background.

TO LIVE FREE--AND TO DIE FREE
By Plume45
This 1951 Newbery winner is a biography, so there is no need to critique the plot or character development. The book reads easily, being the reconstructed life of a proud African youth who was captured at the age of 15 in 1725--reminding us of Haley's Kunta Kinte. Amos never forgot that he was the first son of chief, nor that he must protect and inspire his crippled younger sister (who would assume the role of leader of her village). Indeed, for years he haunted the New England docks seeking her; all his life he exhibited a tenderness and compassion for crippled women and children. Despite the horrors of captivity, the cramped voyage in chains, and being considered the legal property of different masters, Amos never lost his dream of directing his own destiny or his sense of personal dignity.
The ten chapters are chronological, thus of varying length, depending on the amount of material during a specific period of his life. The author skillfully recreates Colonial and then American cultures, drawing the reader into the heart and mind of thiis noble African, who lived to be 80. He truly was Fortunate not to have been unloaded and auctioned off in the South, where he would have suffered excruciatingly in the plantation fields. His goal was to live as a free man; then to help other blacks enjoy the same privilege, even if only to die in freedom. He accomplished his private purposes several times, but at great personal cost. Amos set an example of honesty and Christian responsibility, leaving a legacy of peace and a foundation of interracial cooperation. He did what he could to improve the life for all people in his New Hampshire community. Recommended for elementary and middle school students of Black and Colonial history.

Amos Fortune - A Successful Slave
By A Customer
Amos Fortune, named At-mun at first, is prince of the At-mun-shi people in Africa. Right before the time of the planting of corn, At-mun and others in his tribe are captured and taken to America as slaves. Amos, now living in Massachusetts, learns to live among white men and eventually gains his freedom. While in Massachusetts, Amos looks at the port for his little sister, Ath-mun. She was left behind in Africa when Amos was taken, but Amos searched to see if she had been brought to America since then, and maybe would come off of a ship at the port some time. Because of Amos' wanting Ath-mun to be cared for, he dedicated himself to helpless people. He helped many people in his lifetime.
Amos' last name, Fortune, was given to him by other slaves who saw how fortunate he was. Both of his masters were good to him. He was taught a good trade as a tanner and became very good at it. He was able to earn freedom for himself and his family.
This story is very good, but it isn't as adventurous as I like books to be. I don't think it really hooked me as much as I wish it would have. I think a lot of people will really like this book; it just isn't MY idea of a great book.

Rumours Of A Hurricane, by Tim Lott

Tragic and hilarious in equal measure, Tim Lott’s story of Charlie and Maureen Buck’s ailing marriage and their climb up (and down) the social ladder during the 1980s is a wonderfully honest portrait of ordinary people living through an extraordinary time. Steeped in the decade’s cataclysmic events, packed with the crimes and misdemeanours we visit on each another, ‘Rumours of a Hurricane’ is a powerful tale of change, how we face it – and how we don’t. ‘An outstanding comic novel. Places the 1980s under sceptical and merciless scrutiny’ Literary Review.

The Dog Who Survived
By Chris Harford
Kavik was just an ordinary sled dog, except for one thing he is a half husky, half wolf sled dog. Kavik was also much more athletic than the other dogs, which is exactly why one businessman from California took a special interest in him. On his way to California Kavik is involved in a horrible plane crash, which kills the pilot and leaves Kavik hanging onto life by a thread. After being stranded in a metal cage for three days and facing things such as hunger, loneliness, and being attacked by wild animals, Kavik is barely alive when a boy finds him and frees him from his metal prison. The boy, with the help of his family, nurses Kavik back to health. The businessman comes looking for Kavik, and to the boy's dismay, takes him to his home in California. After spending countless weeks there, Kavik decides he has had enough and escapes from his home and tries to get back to Alaska. Along the way back, Kavik encounters many helping hands and many obstacles such as an old man and woman who live on a boat house, a pack of wolves, hunters, and miles of nearly impassible glaciers, all to get back to the family he loves.

I think all the characters in this book are very believable, especially since there is nothing like flying pigs or talking animals. This book kept me very emotionally involved because of all the twists and turns and because of all of the emotions involved in this book, ranging from humorous to heartbreaking. Kavik The Wolf Dog also teaches a very important lesson, that family is more important than anything. Not only does the book keep you involved, but it also has a great plot that has many surprises.
This story is a great book and it was hard to put down because it is one of the best books I have ever read. I also think this book has some things in common with the book White Fang, so those of you who have read White Fang would enjoy this book. I really enjoyed this book because of the twists and all of the emotions involved in the plot. Although this book is hard to find, I would recommend this book to wolf lovers, people whom like adventurous stories, and anyone who likes a story about surviving and facing the elements of nature.

The Hundred Years War: The English in France 1337-1453, by Desmond Seward

From 1337 to 1453 England repeatedly invaded France on the pretext that her kings had a right to the French throne. Though it was a small, poor country, England for most of those "hundred years" won the battles, sacked the towns and castles, and dominated the war. The protagonists of the Hundred Years War are among the most colorful in European history: Edward III, the Black Prince; Henry V, who was later immortalized by Shakespeare; the splendid but inept John II, who died a prisoner in London; Charles V, who very nearly overcame England; and the enigmatic Charles VII, who at last drove the English out. Desmond Seward's critically-acclaimed account of the Hundred Years War brings to life all of the intrigue, beauty, and royal to-the-death-fighting of that legendary century-long conflict.

From a different perspective
By sid1gen
Desmond Seward has written a great, short (270-text pages) book about a conflict that, incredibly, has shaped the relations between France and England ever since, and has influenced the course of history. The English claim to the throne of France started with the Norman Invasion and the crowning of Duke William as King of England in 1066. Ethnically, the Normans were Vikings, but they had become French in a cultural way. William was followed by his descendants, and they formed the Plantagenet Line, to which some of the most famous and illustrious of English kings belong. Seward sees the conflict as what it was: the invasion of France by English troops in a time where loyalties were given to the feudal lord (duke, prince, king) more than to the country. By the time the war finally ended in 1453, the concept of "nationalism" was firmly entrenched in both England and France. Between the years 1337 and 1453, England had won an amazing string of victories against a bigger, richer enemy, but one that had been wretchedly led, only to be driven away from France towards the end of the war. The English despoiled the rich French countryside; they burned fields; destroyed towns; and, finally, were hated even by those who, a few decades earlier, had been loyal subjects of their English lords. Seward focuses this narrative from a perspective to which we are not used: the French perspective that, honestly, has never received a fair hearing in the English-speaking world. Of particular interest to me was Seward's description of King Henry V, the hero of Shakespeare, the hero of Agincourt, the symbol of nobility..., and a murderer who burned prisoners alive, who destroyed towns for no reason, who applied a religious fanaticism to his campaigns and who, instead of being the ideal of a Prince, was a paranoid, greedy psychopath. Is this an accurate portrayal of Henry? I don't know. But Seward does provide us with a different look at a much written-about hero of the English. Perhaps he is biased, but the glamorized biographies I have read through the years do tend to pale next to this work. Still, as with many historical figures, Henry will keep on being controversial. (And authors do not have to please us every time: I really did not agree with Seward's biography of Richard III.) So, as for the Hundred Years War, the author puts us right there at Crecy, Poitiers, Agincourt (all extraordinary English victories), and at the counterattack with Joan of Arc, the betrayal of the French (maybe they did deserve the English after all), the final push, and the English being sent back to England, while the French retained France. The French went on to lick their wounds after 116 years of rape, pillage, and destruction. The English went on to fight their own conflict, later known as The Wars of the Roses (but not during the Wars between Lancaster and York), and managed to escape major retaliation from the wounded French. This conflict, immense in expanse, extremely important for the future of the world, given the dominant position of both France and England in a resurgent, imperialistic, planetary Europe, is seen with French eyes by a man who seems to stand, sometimes uneasily, on both lands. Excellent book. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Excellent reading--but difficult
By Amazon Customer
This is an excellent, if rapid, retelling of the hundred years war, which was not one war, but a series of bloody conflicts, started by the English refusal to recognize the French salic law which denied inheritance through the female line. Edward III' s mother Queen Isabella was the daughter of king Phillip the Fair, and as such many, including Edward, felt that he,NOT King Phillip's nephew ought to inherit the throne.Meanwhile in France, dependence of salic law had only recently been revived and was, of course being used for political reasons, including specifically that of keeping an Englishman off the throne. Alas, nothing is even so simple and there were many pretenders and schisms, including the Great schism between the Popes of Avignon and Rome as well as between French factions during this period. Seward covers the motivations for conflict, on different class levels, as well as the effects of various conflicts and gives us some great characters. There are several genealogical charts which explain the dynastic imperatives, as well as a real attention to military detail, the descriptions of different kinds of weaponry, particularly English bow and arrow versus French crossbow are impressive. And several battles are accompanied by military diagrams, so that those who are military minded can have a real grasp of the actions at Crecy and Agincourt, for example, as well as of the military intelligence of Edward III, John of Gaunt, Henry V and Joan of Arc. Seward relies on many primary sources, but in particular on Froissart and the Bourgeois of Paris (whom I had not heard of.) He quotes Shakespeare and ancient songs appropriately at the beginning of each chapter, and provides an excellent appendix of maps showing the vicissitudes of French territories and English occupations, as well as an appendix explaining the meaning of the currencies in the economics of the time. This is a straightforward, exceedingly comprehensive, delineation of one of the most confusing occasions in Western European history. One is still left confused at the end about how and why the dynastic, commercial, political and military factors interacted as they did however. And it becomes very difficult to sort one French King and political pretender from another. I never did quite figure out what Phillip of Burgundy was up to.
One has the sense that Seward might have better served his purpose by writing a book a hundred pages longer with attentions to the less heady but equally important details of character, personality and relationship. Maurice Druon's fictional series "The Cursed Kings" (1-6) makes a good introduction to the Political events that led up to the start of the Hundred Years war.

Excellent overall view of the conflicts
By Obi
This series of conflicts really starts with the ascendency of the plantegenet line at the time of Henry II. This was an inevitable conflict due to a sovereign King of England also having a Lordship over Gascony, a title held when King Henry II married Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine. With Edward III having a legitimate claim to the throne of France through his mother Isabella, Seward's book tells the story of the off and on conflicts that occured from 1337-1453.

Early in the conflict, with victories at Slurs, Crecy and Poitiers, the French became aware of the fact that they could not defeat the English forces in the field. However, though the English were capable of conquering territories, they never possessed the strength to hold them indefinately. Seward does a good job of putting the reader in the shoes of the main characters, from the proud but unlucky Philip VI, to the crazy mental patient known as Charles VI. He also gives a good biographical sketch of English monarchs and princes during this period, from Edward "the Black Prince", to John of Gaunt's militarily incompentent bastard granchildren, the Beaufort brothers John and Edmund.

Seward gives a historically accurate portrayal of English hero Henry V that is a far cry from the anglo-centric version we all know through Shakespeare. A man with a tenuous claim to the throne of England invaded France and nearly became the King of France. The atrocities he committed are repugnant, even by the standards of the day and should include him with other evil despots who have ruled through terror and murder. After Henry V's death, despite the competence of his brother the Duke of Bedford, England was doomed to a protracted conflict when the young religious fanatic Joan of Arc decided she was called by God to evict the English from France.

Seward does a good job of viewing the conflict from the perspective of the French peasant, who suffered mightily under the oppression of English rule and the anarchy that existed in the conquered lands. He also details how the loss of the alliance with Burgundy, coupled with the ending of the minority of the incompetent Henry VI doomed England and precipitated the Wars of the Roses.

This is a fascinating period of time in English history that impacted greatly the history of the world. One of the most significant conflicts that shaped the modern world, I highly recommend this book as an overview of the period.

Ungaretti, The Selected Poems of Giuseppi (Modern European Poets), by Giuseppe Ungaretti, Patrick Creagh

This volume of poetry includes the work inspired by Guiseppe Ungaretti's experience in World War I. This dual language edition is accompanied by his own essays and notes. Giuseppe Ungaretti was born in Alexandria in 1888. In 1912 he left Egypt to study in Paris where he was influenced by the French avant garde. Moving to Milan in 1914, he became a central figure of Italian modernism. His sense of poetic vocation and language was further shaped by his experience of the fierce fighting on the Austrian front during World War I. After the war, Ungaretti lived near Rome until 1936, when he was offered a professorship at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. The death of his young son, the outbreak of the World War II and the occupation of Rome had a profound effect on his poetry at this time. He returned to Rome in 1942 and taught at the university there until his retirement. He died in Milan in 1970.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8 An important summer in the life of 12-year-old Patricia Potter involves a trip back in time for her to observe her mother, Ruth, in her mother's twelfth year. While her parents, both successful career people in Toronto, work out a separation, Patricia is sent off to her aunt's lake cottage in Alberta. Raised by fashionable and undemonstrative parents, Patricia feels out of place in the company of her rough-and-tumble cousins. Her escape comes when she discovers an old watch engraved to her grandmother, Patricia. When she winds up the watch she becomes an invisible observer to the happenings that took place in her mother's family 35 years ago. Patricia goes back and forth in time, observing her mother's unhappy childhood, and she decides to give her mother another chance, knowing what she does about the past. Although the novel is about two generations of mother-daughter relationships, all readers see of the grown-up mothers, Ruth and Nan, is from the perspective of a child. Hence, both appear as wooden and flat characters. Although the watch device is a handy one to allow the girl a glimpse of the past, there is not much explanation as to how or why the watch possesses this power. Science fiction fans may be disappointed, but the book will show adolescents how relationships in the present are often locked into patterns of the past, and that a discovery of one's family often reveals much about oneself. Another masterpiece by Kit Pearson
By Andy
Kit Pearson Manages once again to write a emotional and descriptive book which draws you in from the start. This is a book about a 12 year old Patricia Potter who is sent away to live on a lake for the summer with her Aunt Ginnie and Uncle Doug along with cousins her own age so that her parents can work out the details of their divorce without Patricia present. Patricia's never gone camping before, never swum in a lake, never paddled a canoe, and never cleaned a fish, and also her greatest fault: she's not good at making friends. As soon as she arrives, she is labelled as a crybaby, suck-up snob, and a wimp and her cousins despise her and tease her with stingy nicknames such as Potty, and Pee Pee. Then Patricia unexcpectedly finds an old pocket watch in a cavity under the old wooden floor in a cabin named La Petit and she travels 35 years back in time where her own mother was 12. Once again, excellent description and a good summer read for children aged 10 to 13.

Patricia finds a broken watch and uses it to magically travel back into time to watch her mother grow up. Patricia learns more and more about her mother as the plot un-ravels

A real treasure
By Susman
I remember getting this title for my very young cousin she was only 5 at the time, and she was not too keen on sleeping in the dark and always needed a night light. Well she loved the stories and I believe she still has the book today. The stories were very good and were enhanced with the rather nicely done drawings. Rather like other reviewers this old edition really is the best. This is a very good book and I believe it delivers - good for children from 4-6 years old.

outstanding story for 6 year olds
By Amazon Customer
My (recently turned) 6 year old and I rate this as one of our favourite stories ever - and we go through a lot of books with story time every night! I would urge every parent to read this with their kids: the characterisation of the little owl Plop (with 'knackerty' knees and a belly that never fills up) and his daily adventures (with wonderful characters like the 'Father Christmas Lady' to the cat) that eventually help him have the courage to fly into the night unafraid - will not only have you in fits of bedtime giggles. But will also teach your child some lovely detail about nocturnal animals, parental love and the how curiosity opens up your world. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the (original!) soft cover story and will read it many times over i'm sure ...

The original!
By Ms Gillian L Cull
I love this story. Be sure to get this version which is the original, not the picture book versions which miss much of the charm of the story. Plop was a family favorite in our house as a child, I can't wait to read this to my daughter.
