A classic lost world adventure tale

A wealthy aristocrat (Sir Henry Curtis) seeks out legendary hunter, Allan Quatermain, to help him find a brother who went missing while in search of the diamond mines of King Solomon. That’s the premise that propels this story. Quatermain leads an expedition that will strike out into in the dark heart of Africa where the lives will be repeated put on the line.
This novel was written at a time when lost world stories seized the imagination. With exploration still in progress, it wasn’t fantastic beyond imagination that a new civilization would be stumbled into that was unlike any known. The stories of real life explorers (e.g. Livingston, Burton, Speke, and Stanley) engrossed the public, and people were captivated by the myriad ways to die in Africa. Haggard’s novel echoes the terrors of those real world works, but with emphasis on the more visceral (e.g. warring tribes and wild animals) and less emphasis on the more blasé paths to one’s demise (e.g. being abandoned by one’s porters / supply theft, or contracting a severe case of the s***s.)
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It’s readable, particularly for a work of the 19th century. It has enough adventure to maintain tension and keep one reading. That said, it’s not a flawless execution.
The biggest twist is toward the middle, and the ending resolves itself in a disappointing manner. [Remainder of paragraph is vaguely spoilery.] However, one may not notice this on the first read, if one becomes engrossed in the immediate details. To elaborate: the protagonists are put in a dire situation, and to get through it they have to pass through a scary environment. If you are caught up in the feeling of being in that environment, you may not notice the deus ex machina of being there in the first place. Also, the issue of Sir Curtis’s brother feels like it’s handled as an afterthought. If the book was written today, I’d suspect that the author had forgotten all about his inciting incident altogether until an editor told him it was too big of a loose-end to ignore.
I’d recommend this book for readers of adventure and lost world stories.

An Interesting - If Dated - Adventure Yarn

Perhaps one of the better example of colonialist literature, "King Solomon's Mines" is fascinating less for its story than its characters and the colonialist beliefs they openly share with us. The protagonist, Allan Quatermain, belongs to the "Robinson Crusoe" line of literary heroes, which is to say that they would undoubtedly be villains were they to be written about today. Crusoe, of course, was a slaver washed ashore after being shipwrecked, and Quatermain is a poacher - and proud of it. Indeed, one of the book's most trying sequences comes early on when Quatermain and his associates decide to halt for a day or two in their quest to reach King Solomon's legendary diamond mines purely in order to go elephant hunting. The trio of British colonialists, armed with rifles, pursue a pack of elephants and end up trapping them against a hill, butchering several members of the pack. A few, we're told, "unfortunately" escape. As for the rest, they are gunned down and their great ivory tusks cut off. The carcasses are then left to rot. My greatest disappointment was that the elephants didn't manage to turn back and successfully stampede these savage butchers.
So yeah... that made our trio of heroes rather hard to like, right from the get go. They come close to death numerous times later on but, remembering the elephants, I found it rather hard to care. I do believe it important however, not to judge past characters based on the moral standards of today, as this was indeed the mindset - however wrong though it was - that dominated in 19th century England.
That is by far not the only area sure to offend modern sensibilities.
Much later on, after a kind native woman has saved the men - at the cost of her own life - Quatermain remarks on how her death is actually a good thing, as Good, a member of his party (and race) was somewhat smitten with her.
"I am bound to say, looking at the thing from the point of view of an oldish man of the world, that I consider her removal was a fortunate occurrence, since, otherwise, complications would have been sure to ensue. The poor creature was no ordinary native girl, but a person of great, I had almost said stately, beauty, and of considerable refinement of mind. But no amount of beauty or refinement could have made an entanglement between Good and herself a desirable occurrence; for, as she herself put it, "Can the sun mate with the darkness, or the white with the black?"'
Ok, you get it. Colonialist ideas and values = bad! But, as I mentioned, it's important not to let this ruin the book for you. There I'm many books written pre-20th century that won't offer at least one offensive paragraph. And "King Solomon's Mines" is valuable and enlightening for this very reason - to see how far we've come... or at least, most of us.
As I mentioned, the story itself is rather unremarkable when read today, but it appears to have left quite a mark. Many films and subsequent books take from "King Solomon's Mines", the first adventure novel of its kind. The most famous of these is no doubt Indiana Jones, and Steven Spielberg has spoken of the influence Quartermain and co. had on the crafting of the legendary Dr. Jones.
There are some wonderful bits of writing here as well. Take this for example:
"As those who read this history will probably long ago have gathered, I am, to be honest, a bit of a coward, and certainly in no way given to fighting, though somehow it has often been my lot to get into unpleasant positions, and to be obliged to shed man's blood. But I have always hated it, and kept my own blood as undiminished in quantity as possible, sometimes by a judicious use of my heels. At this moment, however, for the first time in my life, I felt my bosom burn with martial ardour. Warlike fragments from the "Ingoldsby Legends," together with numbers of sanguinary verses in the Old Testament, sprang up in my brain like mushrooms in the dark; my blood, which hitherto had been half-frozen with horror, went beating through my veins, and there came upon me a savage desire to kill and spare not."
A "judicious use of my heels"? Verses from the Old Testament springing up in the brain like "mushrooms in the dark"? Maybe it's just my love for this kind of Victorian-era writing, but I just love that!
Read "King Solomon's Mines" if for no other reason than to get an insight into the past - and the future it inspired.

Thoroughly enjoyable read

I don't read novels real often and I really enjoyed this one. Written in first person from the point of view of a well traveled African guide and adventurer in the 1880s named Alan Quartermain.
He meets two English gentlemen on a ship voyage who hire him to guide him the legendary King Solomon's mines. Quartermain agrees to do so , fully expecting to not survive the arduous journey, but ensuring that his son who is attending medical school will be provided for in the event of his death.
Along the way to the mines the trio and their hired servants encounter deadly elephants, a blistering desert, unexpected deaths and an isolated tribe of Africans called Kukuanas.
It turns out one of the porters helping the expedition is actually the rightful king of this tribe and the 3 white adventurers help him regain control of his tribe while killing the current King in a brutal hand to hand combat scenario.
To show his gratefulness for regaining his kingship , Umbopa the porter/king sends them to the mines under the guide of an elderly witch woman Gagool who knows where the mines are.
The team makes it to the mines full of millions of dollars of diamonds, but are entombed inside the mine by Gagool. They spend a harrowing couple of days finding an alternate path out of the mines , return to Umbopa and head back to South Africa. On the way home they encounter the brother of one of the men who hired Quartermain, he had been missing for several years and a secondary objective of the trip was to try and find him.
This book is eminently readable, easily understood and held my attention. In fact it inspired a whole genre of books known as “Lost world literary genre “
I heartily recommend this book , I think you will enjoy it.
