Text and photographs depict the home, school, and cultural life of a young Indian boy growing up on the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- Keegan introduces readers to a ten-year-old Pueblo boy in this beautifully executed photo-essay. Timmy lives in a house, works on computers in school, plays with his cousins, rides his bike, has a Freddy Kruger glove, listens to his Walkman, plays Little League baseball, and fishes like any American kid. But he's also a Pueblo Indian, living at the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico, and instead of going to family reunions he is a member of his mother's Corn Clan; instead of going to church, he participates in the religious dances and ceremonies that his clan is responsible for performing in order to keep the natural world functioning in harmony. Keegan conducts a tour of Timmy's world through her full-color, three-quarter - page photographs and thoughtful text. Especially well done are the pages on Timmy's participation in the Corn Dance. Instead of being outsiders looking at a foreign ritual, readers have an insider's sense of belonging. For most children, the daily life of a Native American child at the turn of the 21st century is still swathed in the trappings of the 19th century. There are still few books that show Indian people alive and well and functioning as both Indians and Americans in 1991. This title is a fine entry in that area.
- Lisa Mitten, University of Pittsburgh, PA
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
While living in many ways like a typical American child, a young Native American also learns about his people's history and traditions. As shown in the many large color photos, Timmy Roybal observes his mother working both as a weaver and as a computer programmer, his aunt as a potter, his uncle as a carver, and other adults doing various jobs. Timmy's father teaches him their traditions and takes him to see Pueblo treasures at the museum in Santa Fe where he is curator. Timmy also enters into tribal dance ceremonies (copiously illustrated). Timmy's life at San Ildefonso Pueblo--with a comfortable home, loving parents, a computer to use at school, and Little League--the hardships that a majority of Native Americans face. Still, Timmy is pleasant and appealing, while his life is depicted as varied and interesting. An authentic glimpse of the positive side of Pueblo life. One walk a day
By VOLKAN SEVIM
I like this book very much. I was in New York City for four days, and I did one walk each day. Each walk (there are twenty three walks in total) is written by a different author, who has memories, passions, or experiences with a particular neighborhood. As I was walking in one neighborhood, I was trying to find the old pickle shop; in an other neighborhood I was looking for the cabaret theatre/restaurant. I did all the things written in the walk chapter I was reading. I ate the desert in that French cafe and I bought some cheese from the shop mentioned in the chapter. This book is, I think, for people who love history, life, art, people and food. I recommend reading the particular walk chapter in advance, and then reading the same chapter piece by piece as you do the walk.
Next time I will do the next four walks that I already chose.

A personal insight into the city
By E. Pollock
I thought this book was terrific. Unlike a lot of travel books that are fairly impersonal and concentrate on the historical aspects, this book has 23 walks written by historians, novelists and journalists who have lived in the city long enough to know it from personal experience. It's great to hear little anecdotes about various places as you go through the walks. The Dorothy Parker walk takes you through all her old haunts as well as talking at length about her life and that of the other members of the Algonquin Round Table. A great introduction to a city that can seem impossibly hard to get to know during a short stay.

The Time Out Book of self-indulgent walks
By George
The several walks that I tried were awful. They were prepared by people with some personal link to a particular neighborhood, and were unbelievably self-indulgent.
I believe it was walk 12, "Jagged Symmetries", that consisted largely of the author pointing out homes and restaurants where he had once hung out with Andy Warhol. The Peter Singer walk involves him pointing out buildings where he had offices when he was writing various books. Virtually no architectural information, or interesting historical information. Just personal reminisences that would have been best shared only with close personal frieds.

I remember this one from my childhood - when my 5yr old became interested in jokes this was my first thought. A few of the jokes have dated a little, but otherwise it's pretty good.

She has identified six types of procrastinators--perfectionists, dreamers, worriers, defiers, crisismakers, and overdoers--and for each has developed a specific program designed to help students unlearn self-destructive behavior and realize their full academic potential. Through quizzes and case studies, she shows students how to:

A great book for student procrastinators
By A Customer
Finally a book that addresses student-specific reasons for procrastination. This book gives insight into the six types of procrastinators and lets you categorize your type through short quizzes. Although it offers a lot of information about WHY we procrastinate, I wish the book said more about HOW to stop this terrible problem. I'd like to see audio tapes made for the book's creative visualization exercises.

great book, lots of good ideas
By A Customer
Oh, if only I could just snap my fingers and stop putting things off. But alas, I know that's impossible. That's why this book is so good. It helped me understand why I procrastinate. The quizzes are fun. I discovered I'm a dreamer and a crisis-maker. And the ideas that this book gave me to help me stop procrastinating are very useful. Just putting a few into practice has made a difference in my life. And I like the author's writing style. I keep reminding myself of one thing she said. Procrastination is like a credit card. It's a lot of fun until you get the bill.

Waste of Time and Money
By A Customer
This book identifies 6 styles of procrastination. The thing is I didn't fit into any of them and after reading the book, I still procrastinated. I don't understand why I do it and the book hasn't helped me at all.

About the Author
The Marvel and Other Short Stories is a collected anthology of six short stories written by the winners of the Austin Macauley World Book Day short story competition.

Wendy Martin is Professor of American Literature and American Studies at the Claremont Graduate University.

Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies in 1757, the illegitimate child of a Scottish merchant. He came to the American colonies to study at King's College (now Columbia University), and became an early and ardent supporter of the Revolutionary cause. During the Revolutionary War he was aide-de-camp to George Washington and a member of the Continental Congress. He was a leading figure at the Constitutional Convention (1787) and a principal author of The Federalist Papers. At first Secretary of the Treasury he articulated a policy of protection for manufacturing interests, strong central government, and establishment of a national bank. After leaving the Cabinet, he practiced law in New York. His personal attacks hindered the political career of the volatile Aaron Burr, who finally challenged him to a duel in 1804. Hamilton was shot, and died of his wounds.
John Jay (1747-1829) was a conservative lawyer who became a leading patriot. He was a minister to Spain (1780-82), the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1789-95), and he negotiated the treaty of 1795 between the U.S. and Britain. His contributions to The Federalist Papers concern foreign affairs.
James Madison was born in 1751, the son of a Virginia planter. He worked for the Revolutionary cause as a member of the Continental Congress and the Virginia House of Delegates. The leader of deliberations at the Constitutional Convention, he fought for the adoption of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Through an ally of Hamilton on the Constitution he was a supporter of Jefferson's agrarian policies. He was Jefferson's Secretary of State (1801-9) and his successor as president (1809-17), but his presidencywas marred by the unpopular War of 1812. Madison died in 1836

Best Rome Restaurant Guide
By dummy_girl
I bought 5 Rome travel guides (Time Out, DK, Insight, Rick Steves, and Knopf), and my best friend borrowed another. Unlike Rick Steves and Frommers, Time Out Rome had a fairly reliable restaurant section with corresponding maps. Thus, it was the only guide I took out of the hotel room during our 2+ week stay. Since I have no desire to pay for any more relatively expensive inedible food with heinous customer service, I will be buying Time Out guides from now on. By the by, almost all the other tourists were carrying DK guides (in several languages). I only saw a couple Midwesterners carrying Rick Steves (they were the ones reading the tour sections aloud) and another New Yorker carrying Time Out. It's a must have if you want to eat a decent meal.

An excellent guide to the Eternal City
By Carl Stewart
A mercifully short review:

The Time Out city guides are almost uniformly excellent and this one is no exception. Skip the standard Rome fare and take this book with you; it is filled not only with the usual restaurant and hotel reviews, but goes into areas that the mainstream publications don't want to touch, e.g., gay and lesbian Rome.

Even an edition that is a few years old is valuable; Rome has been around more than a few millenia; what is a few years to it?

TimeOut doesn't disappoint
By Lainek
I bought this guide book because I was familiar with the TimeOut magazine. This book is full of vivid descriptions and important information. However, because of all the descriptions, it is not so easy to use as a quick reference. I used it more as background reading for what I was about to see the next day or had just seen earlier in the day. Great amount of information for the price!

Rose Campbell, tired and ill, has come to live at "The Aunt Hill" after the death of her beloved father. Six aunts fussing and fretting over her are bad enough, but what is a quiet 13-year-old girl to do with seven boisterous boy cousins?

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-At the age of 13, Rose finds herself orphaned and living with two elderly aunts on "Aunt Hill" where she is treated as delicately as the flower for which she is named. But Rose soon finds her quiet world turned upside down with the arrival of her seven boisterous boy cousins followed by her Uncle Alec, a doctor and a world traveler. Upon meeting Rose, Uncle Alec quickly prescribes fresh air and much activity to help with the girl's poor constitution. Uncle Alec's diagnosis turns out to be an accurate one and Rose, with the help of her cousins, finds herself in the middle of much hijinx and merriment. Veteran stage actress Barbara Caruso brilliantly breaths life into each and every one of Louisa May Alcott's delightful characters. With just the slightest change of inflection she is able to capture the essence of each character from the oldest to the very youngest. This audiobook would be an asset to any collection.

About the Author
Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, and began her writing career at an early age, with short stories for newspapers and magazines. Best known for what began as a series of stories in the 1860s to the classic American children's novel we know today as Little Women.

As Good As 'Little Women'
By Wendy Kaplan
This is the wonderful story of Rose Campbell, whom we first meet as a sickly and despondent 13-year-old orphan. She is grieving for her recently dead parents, and she tends to get the vapors and other Victorian women's ailments. Nevertheless, this shy, frail and delicate creature is sent to live on the "Aunt Hill" to be raised by six very opinionated aunts.
And that's not all. She is also surrounded by seven male cousins, as boisterous and full of life as they come. Rose's initial reaction is to wish herself dead. Barely able to lift her head, she is frightened and overwhelmed by the presence of her mischievous clan. But deep inside, she is secretly envious. The boys get to climb trees and run and play, while Rose, as all young women in her day, is confined to the parlor, constricted by tight corsets and impossible petticoats.
Along comes Uncle Mac, the doctor uncle whose view of how to raise girls clashes with his day and time--and all six of his sisters, the formidable aunts. In the character of Doctor Mac, Louisa May Alcott was able to tout her own family's avant garde views on women's health, almost a century ahead of its time. The doctor forbids Rose to wear the constricting corsets, to the horror of all her aunts and the girl herself. He wonders how she can feel healthy when she cannot draw a decent breath? He encourages her to play outside with her cousins, to get fresh air and exercise. He demands that she eat good, hearty meals instead of womanly morsels. And under his tutelage, and with the friendship of her wonderful cousins, Rose starts to bloom. She turns from a shy, sickly little mouse into a strong, outgoing young woman.
I loved this book as a child; I love it now. It has the perfect message for any girl of any age: Be yourself, take care of yourself, and nothing and nobody can stop you. In my view, "Eight Cousins" is Alcott's true masterpiece.

A good book to curl up with
By A Customer
"Rose in Bloom" is one of my favorite books ever. I like it more than any other Louisa May Alcott book, although its predecessor "Eight Cousins" is a sweet story in its own right. I can't find many romances that don't make me blush, but "Rose in Bloom" not only doesn't embarrass me, it makes me feel quite virtuous. ^_^ "Rose in Bloom" is so delightfully Victorian and unabashedly idealistic and romantic. The characters are all quite loveable and the plot, although firmly rooted in its time, resonates even now. The story is incredibly emotionally involving, I cry whenever I read this book -- even at a bus stop once! However, it's not a sad book; it ends very happily. (The scene with the quill pen just makes me need to call up a friend and squeal about the cuteness of it all.) When I find that mere words on a page can make the world seem to light up with happiness and goodness, I know I have found an incredible book. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes wonderful characters, a charming and earnest narrative, and a cute romance.

Can't believe it was written over 130 years ago!
By A Customer
The story of Rose and how she comes of age is certainly idealized, but don't we need more ideals these days? She is rich and rather sheltered, but she faces the same peer pressure, the same temptations with boys, the same problems with friends and romance. Even Charlie's struggle with drinking is as fresh and relevant today as it was then. She also promotes an independent, even feminist, attitude, but without losing sight of the importance of feminine talents and virtues. I didn't discover this book until I was in my 20s, even though I had been a Little Women fan since childhood, but since then I've read "Eight Cousins" and other Alcott classics, and I wouldn't be without them. My daughter is learning to read now, and I can't wait to introduce her to Rose!

The Book of War: 25 Centuries of Great War Writing, by John Keegan

Acclaimed military historian John Keegan’s anthology of war writing from 25 centuries of battle

In The Book of War, John Keegan marshals a formidable host of war writings to chronicle the evolution of Western warfare through the voice of the most eloquent participants—from Thucydides’ classic account of ancient Greek phalanx warfare to a blow-by-blow description of ground fighting against the Iraqi troops in Kuwait during the Gulf War. Keegan gathers more than eighty selections, including Caesar’s Commentaries on the Roman invasion of Britain; the French Knight Jehan de Wavrin at the battle of Agincourt; Davy Crockett in the war against the Creek; Wellington’s dispatch on Waterloo; Hemingway after Caporetto; and Ernie Pyle at Normandy.

“The best military historian of our generation.” –Tom Clancy

“A monumental piece of literary military history.” –Chicago Tribune

Amazon.com Review
In this eclectic anthology of war writings, military historian John Keegan (author of The Face of Battle and The Second World War) has collected some of the best that has been thought and said about armed conflict over the course of 25 centuries. Keegan is especially interested in how war has evolved over time; his introduction is a brief history of this development, from the heroic age of individual combat to the horrific "total war" of the 20th century. He begins with a pair of 5th-century-B.C. excerpts from Thucydides and concludes with a British soldier's brief description of combat against Iraqi soldiers in the 1991 Gulf War. In between are selections by Julius Caesar, Davy Crockett, Victor Hugo, George Orwell, and many others. If there is a theme to this book, it may be the clash of cultures: what happens when different military traditions collide, such as when the Romans invaded Britain, the Muslim Turks besieged Malta, or General Custer and the 7th Cavalry faced the Sioux in Montana. He understandably gives only cursory attention to several wars--the U.S. Civil War, Korea, and Vietnam--and lingers a bit on his coverage of the First World War (which Keegan views as a key to interpreting the whole 20th century) and the Second World War. The selections themselves are continually exciting, and rarely predictable. There are even a few poems thrown in for good effect. The Book of War may focus on an awful subject ("The history of all forms of warfare is ... essentially inhumane," writes Keegan), but it is also full of awfully good writing. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
Keegan (the bestselling The First World War) stands out among contemporary writers of military history for the literary sensibility he brings to the subject. In his introduction to this anthology, he writes that he organized his selections around contrasting military traditions: a "Western" way of war based on a code of behavior that includes mercy to the vanquished, and a more tribal approach observing few inhibitions. Thankfully, Keegan's literary sense overrides this artificial framework. He offers nearly 100 vignettes from around the world, selected with an artist's eye and a historian's judgment, that combine to show war's multiple faces. The authors are great captains like Julius Caesar and the Duke of Wellington, as well as front-line warriors such as Gulf War veteran Andy McNabb. Elizabeth Custer has her place, as do Davy Crockett and Rudyard Kipling. Some accounts capture the immediacy of war, like William Laurence's narratives on the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Some voices are matter-of-fact, like George MacDonald Fraser's account of soldiers' stoic mourning of a comrade. Others, like Ernest Hemingway's 1918 letter from the Italian front, are self-consciously literary. Familiar settingsAthe trenches of the Great War; Russia in 1812Acontrast with Jesuit missionary Paul Ragueneau's account of an Iroquois Indian raid in 17th-century Canada. What the selections share is passion. All the men and women in these pages engage their experiences fully. Once again, Keegan has opened a door onto the human condition, showing that we are defined by warAat least in part. Major ad/promo. (Nov.)

From Library Journal
Fresh on the heels of his best seller, The First World War, military historian Keegan offers an anthology of brief narratives of war. Selections range from the reflection of historians to the world of generals and poets. Some selections are excellent, such as Caesar's words, those of the World War I poets, and a very poignant description of the suffering endured by the French in their withdrawal from Russia during the Napoleonic wars. Unfortunately, such selections are rare. Most are too short to be truly meaningful and are very dry. It seems to this reviewer that once a military author achieves success, publishers are inclined to saturate the market with older works, revised editions, and new texts derived from selections of previous works (? la Stephen Ambrose). Keegan is a fine military historian, but this anthology is not one of his better efforts and is recommended only for large military history collections.

Romans to Iraqis, Prose and Verse, It's Right Here!
By Mark A. Savage
I never thought of Julius Caesar as a good writer, or George Orwell as a soldier/fighter. Then I read this book, which at first I was a bit reluctant about. Guilt caused me to read it, but pleasure lead me to finish it, and I'm very glad I did.
The book is a great collection of some of the greatest war writings available, and that's the best way to describe them. Mr. Keegan introduces each "article" with short tellings of the background of each piece. These short intros are worth their weight in gold, as they are clear, honest, and detailed. Small gems for the reader, that's the best way to describe them.
Now, after each of these gems comes a tale, epic, letter, or poem, yes poem! "In Flanders fields the poppies grow.." or how about "Into the valley of death rode the 600..." How refreshing to revisit these childhood memories while exploring such dramatic tales of combat, fear, or war. Truly remarkable. I couldn't put the book down for fear of missing the next literary jewel.
Now let's talk about Victor Hugo (in War?) or George Orwell's terrible wound described by himself. There's also Davy Crockett, and my favorite, the stunning Julius Caesar. When Caesar writes an after-action report, he gets the point across. Also read about the soldier lost in the WWI trenches, the A-bomb aftermath, and Ernie Pyle's report from Normandie. The famous "Thin Red Line" of Balaclava is presented in 1st person reality that is awesome in it's readability.
So in other words, this is a termondous book. Mr. Keegan, you have done us all a great service by 1) your choice of the fine materials you included, and 2) by your excellent preparation of each for the reader. I'm a believer now, and my Keegan section will soon be growing...Thank you.

Outstanding collection of short pieces
By omarbukka
Fascinating anthology of war writings. I have read many of Keegan's books (all of them are superb), but this one has a quite different flavor, since Keegan just writes introductory text for the pieces. The excerpts are often quite short, so the book is admirable suited to readers who want to dip in and out for 5 minutes at a time.
The choices are excellent and some of the works are not easily accessible in other forms. I have tried (with no success) to obtain copies of the some of the original books, many of which are out of print. Many of the images are unforgettable.

Eastern stories that have captured the Western imagination!
By Godly Gadfly
The Tales from the Arabian Nights are ancient stories of romance, suspense, mystery, magic and adventure originating from Persia, India and Arabia, originally functioning as the daily entertainment of ordinary people. They are woven together under the premise that they saved the life of Shahrazad, a queen whose husband executed each of his new wives after one night of marriage. By beginning an exciting story every evening, but withholding the ending, Shahrazad was able to convince the breathless king to spare her for another day until the next installment. Of course, after 1001 nights of devious story-telling, she had saved her life forever.
First introduced to the Western world in the eighteenth century, these stories have attained great popularity, and been retold many times, with "Aladdin" even being made into a Disney film. This collection features only a small selection of the best and most popular tales. Unlike many editions, it doesn't reflect the contemporary versions of the stories, but seeks to be faithful to the authentic Arabic sources. N.J. Dawood is well-equipped to retell these stories from the original Arabic. Born in Baghdad, Dawood attained a reputation as a scholar and received a university education in London. Amongst other projects he has translated "The Koran" and a complete collection of "Tales from the Thousand and One Nights."
Because this version intends to be faithful to the original Arabic, readers should not expect a sanitized Western interpretation. If you are looking for a fresh style that brings these stories to life for children in a modern Western audience, this is likely not the edition for you. These stories are unashamedly Arabic in character, and the religious aspect (Islam) is dominant throughout, where health and wealth, wine and women are bestowed as the blessing of Allah for obedience. But despite this, these stories continue to capture the Western imagination. Expect to read stories about powerful genies (jinees), magical lamps, talking animals, distant voyages, and impossible adventures.
This volume (a companion to "Sinbad the Sailor and Other Tales from The Arabian Nights") contains the well-known stories of "Aladdin", and "The Ebony Horse". Also represented are the lesser-known but equally fascinating "Khalifah the Fisherman" and "The Dream". A great opportunity to read stories that have stood the test of time in another culture - these are classics, and make a good introduction to the original cultural flavour of "Tales from the Arabian Nights"!

Not child appropriate although found in children's book category!
By AHA
This was found and ordered through Amazon's Children's Book Category as a party favor for an Aladdin themed 6th birthday party. I should have read the book first before stuffing it into favor bags in lieu of candy. The contents was quite inappropriate for the age group. To illustrate that, after the first three pages, the King had caught his wife cheating on him with her slave, he swung his sword at them and caused a blood bath. He then left his kingdom to visit his brother's kingdom where he was still tormented by the memories of what happened just before his departure. But then he noticed his brother's wife and started a liking in her... I had to immediately "warn" the other parents. My bad for not reading the book first, and what a terrible mistake of Amazon to miscategorize the book!

Foundational for discussing what matters most
By Billykev
There were 3 aspects of this book that made a differecne for me: Thinking Differently, Making Shifts, and understanding the Structure found in all difficult conversations. If you understand these aspects it will significantly improve how well you handle difficult conversations.
This is about Thinking Differently-- 1. This is an approach. 2. It's not about doing differently; it's about thinking differently. 3. It's about shifting from a message delivery stance to a learning stance. 4. All difficult conversations have the same structure. The structure is almost always "below the surface." It is hidden in what people are thinking and feeling, but not saying.
Shifts (with this approach)-- We must shift our internal orientation: FROM: Certainty (I understand) TO: Curiosity (Help me understand); FROM: I am right TO: I am curious; FROM: I know what was intended TO:I know the impact; FROM: I know who is to blame TO: I know who contributed what; FROM: Debate TO: Exploration; FROM: Simplicity TO: Complexity; FROM: "Either/or" TO: "And".
Understanding the Structure-- 1. All difficult conversations share a common structure. To make the structure visible, we not only need to understand what was said, but also what was not said. We need to understand what the people involved are thinking and feeling, but not saying to each other. This is usually where the real action is. 2. What makes a conversation difficult? The gap between what you are really thinking and what you are saying is part of it. 3. Our thoughts and feelings of all difficult conversations fall into the same three categories, or "conversations". 4. And, in each of the conversations, we make predictable errors that distort our thoughts and feelings and get us in trouble. 5. There predictable errors can be overcome this specific strategies that the authors suggest.
I have developed workshops based on this material that we are finding very helpful in our hospital setting.
Spend some time with this book - it will be worth your while.

Very Informative and helpful
By M. A. ZAIDI
Everyone of us has gone through difficult conversations, arguments that were leading no where or felt that we were unjustifiably being taken advantage of. The solution - read this book. The authors have done a remarkable work in presenting conversations (real examples) that we can relate to. They educate the reader with the pitfalls and means o avoid them.
In difficult conversations the participants generally fall trap to the three common crippling assumptions which are:
1. The Truth assumption : I am right you are wrong
2. The Intention Invention : When the other persons intentions are unclear a common perception is
that they are bad
3. The Blame Frame : Blame the other produces disagreement, denial and little learning
The authors map a path by showing how to avoid the pitfalls when facing a difficult conversation and come out as a winner. In our life we prepare for almost every thing, like schooling and college for career etc. it is somewhat surprising that conversations that truly are a means to progress we spend little time on; this is one of the books in this area. I highly recommend that you read it.

No matter who we are, we all have difficult conversations too often, that don't go as well as we would like.
By Blaine Greenfield
A book on CD called to me when I saw its captivating title: DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS: HOW TO DISUCSS WHAT MATTERS MOST--written and read by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton and Sheila Heen.

The fact that Patton was one of the authors also caught my attention, in that he was the coauthor of one of my favorite books on negotiations, GETTING TO YES!

This effort covers such topics as dealing with your ex-husband who can't seem to show up reliably for weekends with the kinds navigating a workplace fraught with office politics or racial tensions, and saying "I'm sorry" or "I love you." No matter who we are, we've all had to have similar conversations and too often, they don't go as well as we would like.

DIFFICULT CONVERSATONS at least makes them easier by providing such useful advice as the following:

* Use "and" to help you become clearer; e.g.,, "I understand what you're saying, and I feel this way."

* Put things on the table without judgments.

* Saying "I feel" will cause the other person to be less likely to argue with you.

* Postponing a conversation can sometimes be helpful.

* Sometimes, actions are better than conversations; e.g., going to a mother's home rather than always being asked, "When are you going to come home?"

* People are more likely to change when they don't have to.

* If you don't have a question, don't ask one; e.g., "Are you going to clean the refrigerator?" vs. "Please clean the refrigerator."

And this one final tidbit, which I have personally found very useful: Be careful when making judgments. It is easy to say, "Spanking is wrong," but a better way to say this might well be, "I believe spanking is wrong."
