one "Monarch" that should abdicate!

around the turn of the century a delightfully quirkly tv series called Monarch of the Glen surfaced, which went on to become - and deserve to be - the single most famous Scottish tv series in the world. it offered an infectious mix of comedy, social commentary, and character drama which often seemed about to, but somehow always managed not to, deteriorate into soap-opera territory. that in itself is a remarkable achievement and enough to qualify it as one of the better tv series of recent decades.
the opening credit reads not "based on" but "inspired by" the works of one Compton McKenzie. in other words they're freely admitting that they took a few liberties with their source material. and this is one case where they did it (and us) a favor by doing so.
maybe i'm not really qualified to judge the book, being an American born in the '70s. it's generally described as a biting satire of a certain Scottish mindset of a certain place and time (it was published in 1941), neither of which i would have any firsthand experience with. in fact, Compton McKenzie purists most criticize the series for taking seriously something McKenzie himself was lampooning. so just how accurately it skewers it's targets is more than i can say. all can say is that, and why, it didn't resonate with me in the same way as the tv show does.
basically, it takes place on an estate called Glenbogle, home of the MacDonald clan. the resemblance pretty much dissipates from there on in. it's not the same type of story, it's doesn't flow at the same rhythm, it doesn't even feature the same characters. there is a Hector MacDonald and a Donald MacDonald, but they have little in common with the characters played by Richard Briers and Tom Baker. they chiefly refer to historical characters and seem to be recurring "family" names. the current "laird" of Glenbogle has a mercurial petulance similar to that of Briers, but an aristocratic arrogance - described more than once as bordering on fascism - keeps him from being anywhere near as likeable.
the main character, it turns out, is a rather cliché debutante named Carrie Royde, and the staff are an off-the-rack selection of Anglo butler, chef, maid, etc. trust me, we all benefited and then some when these carbon-copies were traded in for reluctant heir to the glen Archie, sardonic chef Lexie, canny but headstrong ranger Duncan, and crusty "ghillie" Golly.
a further frustration is that this particular edition features the smallest type i've ever seen in a published book. any difficulties following the plot may have less to do with how it's written than with the fact that the print is the height of a bacteria. a single page can take up to ten minutes to read.
i have to confess to one other reason i can't call myself an authority. i couldn't really get into it - and even if i could've that microscopic print was making my eyes ache - so i read maybe half of the first of three books.
so i'm not qualified to pass judgment. all i set out to do is what i am qualified to do, namely issue a disclaimer: pick up this book expecting a more than passing resemblance to the tv series and you're in for one mother of a disillusionment.

boring read

We love the BBC show, Monarch of the Glen. I am soooooo disappointed with this book-it is a very boring story. It does put me to sleep.
