Perhaps Wells' Finest Novel

Although it is less often read than such Wells novels as THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, the basic story of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU is very well known through several extremely loose film adaptations. Pendrick, a British scientist, is shipwrecked--and by chance finds himself on an isolated island where Dr. Moreau and his assistant Montgomery are engaged in a series of experiments. They are attempting to transform animals into manlike beings.

Wells, a social reformer, was a very didactic writer, and his novels reflect his thoughts and theories about humanity. Much of Wells writing concerns (either directly or covertly) social class, but while this exists in MOREAU it is less the basic theme than an undercurrent. At core, the novel concerns the then-newly advanced theory of natural selection--and then works to relate how that theory impacts man's concept of God. Wells often touched upon this, and in several novels he broaches the thought that if mankind evolved "up" it might just as easily evolve "down," but nowhere in his work is this line of thought more clearly and specifically seen than here.

At times Wells' determination to teach his reader can overwhelm; at times it can become so subtle that it is nothing short of absolutely obscure. But in THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, Wells achieves a perfect balance of the two extremes, even going so far as to balance the characters in such a way that not even the narrator emerges as entirely sympathetic. It is a remarkable achievement, and in this sense I consider MOREAU possibly the best of Wells work: the novel is as interesting for the story it tells as it is for still very relevant themes it considers.

It is also something of an oddity among Wells work, for while Wells often included elements of horror and savagery in his novels, MOREAU is not so much horrific as it is disturbingly gruesome and occasionally deliberately distasteful. This is not really a book than you can read and then put away: it lingers in your mind in a most unsettling way. Strongly recommended.

Dreamy as always!

Anne has managed to capture the hearts of millions over the years. I find myself going back and reading the Anne series over and over again. Anne's house of dreams is no exception to the wonderful series that keeps following Anne and her new husband Gilbert 60 miles from Green Gables and to their new house of dreams in Four Winds.

This is the book we waited for-when Anne and Gilbert finally marry and have a beautiful wedding day. We want to see them in wedded bliss and discover their new home. It does not disappoint! Wonderful and charming-like Anne herself, this book is a favorite in the series for me.

The author gives helpful tips for stopping destructive chewing, aggression, furniture scratching, and litter-box difficulties. Her advice on grooming, pests, traveling, and first aid are clear and straightforward. She also recommends types and brands of toys, equipment, food, and other feline products. A similar guide is Brian Kilcommon's Good Owners, Great Cats (LJ 10/1/95), which has a more attractive layout and is easier to use. Still, this volume is more comprehensive than Johnson-Bennett's earlier works, with excellent insight into feline behavior, humor, and common sense. Recommended for most pet collections.

About the Author
Pam Johnson-Bennett hosted the Animal Planet UK series "Psycho Kitty." She is best-selling author of 7 books on cat behavior. With a career that began in 1982, Pam is considered a pioneer in the field of cat behavior consulting. 

Pam was vice president of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and the founder and longtime chair of the IAABC cat division. She served on the American Humane Association's Advisory Board on Animal Behavior and Training and the American Humane Association Cat Health and Welfare Forum. She is also on the Advisory Board for Tree House Humane Society. She lectures worldwide at veterinary conferences and animal welfare organizations.

Pam is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Winn Feline Foundation Media Award and the IAABC cat division award.

In addition to her work with cats, Pam is the co-author of Cookies for Dinner. This book chronicles the funny and often embarrassing side of motherhood. The sequel to Cookies for Dinner is set for release in late 2015/early2016.

A great resource!

I just got my first cat (she's 6 months old) and have been searching around desperately ever since for a good, solid reference book full of everything I need to know to keep my cat healthy and happy. A kind of "Our Bodies, Our Selves" for my pet, you could say. But most of the books I found were all pictures, no substance.
I stumbled across this one when I found it on a sale table. I thought it was just going to be a handbook on cat psychology, but it turns out it's much, much more!
This book has information on just about everything you would ever need to know about taking care of your kitty. It's got a chapter on every subject I had a question about, plus informational lists (like, of which houseplants are poisonous), very detailed and easy-to-follow instructions (like, on how to do CPR on your cat), and extremely innovative ideas and solutions to common problems (like, how to keep your cat off your kitchen counters).
I heartily recommend this book to everybody who has a cat or is thinking about getting one. It's terrific!

A Great Book for Cat Owners

There is so much misinformation about cats that it's a welcome treat to have a book that gives us insight into things that are important to them. Cats love security. They love a familiar setting. They like a routine, but they can become bored if we don't play with them regularly. The author has fine suggestions on effective play. She also has excellent thoughts on how cats try to communicate with us. It took me a long time to figure out what my cat was trying to tell me, but you can get it nicely from this book. The volume has useful information on cat health, but its great value is in helping you think like a cat. Every cat owner would be wise to have a copy.

Excellent Book for Owners of Cats of All Ages

I checked out this book at the library, and I am now buying it. Don't think that this is a book for someone who JUST bought a cat! I have owned a cat for 5 years and I still found all the information in this book helpful. Pam explains everything in clear, concise words, so you don't get caught of in the middle of the book thinking "What the heck is a cytoplamatic inherited gene?" I strongly urge you to buy this book whether you are about to buy your first kitten or if you have been a cat owner for 20 years.

Subtle Satisfying Brilliance

This book is long, but only because that's how James tells the story. It's like a soup that needs to boil all day, so it's kept on low, but when it's done, it's perfect. The book stays at the pace of "our hero" the American Christopher Newman. A smart, educated, rich, yet easy going, simple, and humane veteran of the Civil War and a self made tycoon, who goes to Europe to see the "treasures and entertain" himself.
He becomes entangled in what he thinks is a simple plan for matrimony, but is really truly a great deal larger and more treacherous and terrible than that.
We spend a lot of time in Newman's mind, paragraphs of character analaysis are sprung upon us, but nothing seems plodding or slow, nothing feels useless. By the end of the book we find that we think like the character and can only agree with what he does. We react to seemingly big plot twists and events as he does, without reaction, and a logical, common sense train of thought.
But don't misunderstand that. For a book that is so polite and the essence of "slow-reaction", it is heartwrenching and tragic. You will cry, you will wonder, and you will ask yourself questions. Colorful, lifelike, and exuberant characters fight for your attention and your emotions, and we are intensely endeared to them. Emotional scenes speckle the book and are just enough. And the fact that something terrible and evil exists in this story hangs over your head from the beginning. It's hard to guess what happens because James doesn't give us many clues, and the ending may come as a surprise to some people. And without us knowing it, James is comparing American culture to European culture (of the day), and this in of itself is fulfilling.
Indeed, James uses every page he has, without wasting any on detailed landscapes and useless banter. 2 pages from the end you have a wrenching heartache, but the last paragraph and page is utterly and supremely satisfying, and you walk away the way Newman walks away, at peace.

Fabulous story, French vs. American culture shock

I have this friend who hates Henry James. I can't understand it. The style is dated, in that people dont write that way today, but as you get into the book you begin to enjoy the style, as well as the plot, characters, and French/American dual culture shock that still goes on today. (For an update on the theme, look at Le Divorce and Le Mariage by Diane Johnson). I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen to these characters and the description of Paris in the Second Empire were fascinating. If you watch the Masterpiece Theatre version without having read the book, you will be totally confused. They moved events out of sequence all over the place and after about ten minutes I shut off the tape and picked up the book. You have to know the whole story before you watch them throw characters and events at you in the first two scenes that only appear 2/3 of the way through the novel, after a foundation has been laid as to who they are and when and why things happened.
I couldnt recommend this more for a good read. The only caution I have is for readers who have never been to France. They may get an extremely negative impression of French people from many of the characters in this book. Go to Paris and you will find the city is wonderful, and so are the French people. These characters are not typical!! They belong to a certain class, and the book does take place 150 years ago. If this book doesnt get you hooked on James, I dont know what will. Try Washington Square and dont miss that movie, with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Albert Finney and Maggie Smith.

Grade 4-8--Paul Jennings has what can only be described as a unique style of writing. The far stretches of his imagination are examined in this audio version of another of his bizarre story collections (Penguin, 2002). Clearly aimed at an audience of adolescent boys, this collection has a bit of everything—two fart stories, a French-kissing (or is it fish-kissing?) episode, and glow-in-the-dark teeth. This is a wonderful collection, but it will surely step on some sensitive toes. Don't let that stop you from enjoying it, however. The stories are imaginative, often humorous, compelling, occasionally poignant, and never boring. Hailstone bugs, Mom's hat and its connection to feral rats, and the question of whether ghosts realize they had a "before-life" are all examined. Stig Wemyss reads these very Australian stories with the perfect accent, creating voices for each character but, more importantly, giving the author's words expressive performance. Tongue-Tied!

"Tongue Tied" is Paul Jennings tenth (more or less) collection of eight short stories for kids, published in 2002. I don't know why it's called "Tongue Tied". Most of the books in the series are called "Un" something, like "Uncanny!", "Unreal!" and "Unseen!". Is it that Paul ran out of "Un" words? It could have been "Unspoken!" "Untouched!", "Unused!" "Unnamed!" even. Ah well. They're fun for all ages, and I've been a fan of his since I was a kid. This one was a bit of a mixed bag though.

"Tongue-Tied", the title story, is my favorite, and features a boy who wants a kiss and a girl who wants a fish. It's a cute one...

"Lennie Lighthouse" is about a boy who has glowing teeth, and features a bit of storytelling in Melbourne, which is always nice.

"Sniffex" is a sequel to the story "Ex-Poser" (from 1991's "Unmentionable"), and has Boffin hunting down the "Phantom Farter" of his class at school, using a special formula called Sniffex...

"The Hat" is set in Queensland, and has a whole bunch of Australian wildlife, and deals a lot with death. Bit flat, I thought.

"Spot the Dog" has an illustration where you, and the character in the story, get to spot the dog. Bit flat too...

"Hailstone Bugs" is interesting. A boy who likes magic tricks finds bugs in hailstones like cocoons.

"Shake" is a ghost story of sorts, and features a world where ghosts don't believe in people. Has a really tragic opening though...

"Popping Off" features a dog that farts (because it can't bark) and an old man that farts (because he can't talk), and it gets a certain family into trouble.

There's a couple of interesting moments, but I'd recommend a book like "Unmentionable" or "Unseen" to newcomers to Paul Jennings instead. Three and a half stars.

I'm writing this review as an ESL secondary school teacher in Hong Kong. It is not easy to find "real" English books which can interest our local secondary students here but at the same time written in simple enough English. Therefore, I think this book is a rare find. Even though not all the stories are equally fun to read, most of them are and they are all very imaginative.

My favourite story in this book is "The Hat". It really touches my heart. It is a more serious story in this book and it may not be the favourite of many teenage readers, but from a teacher's point of view, I think there are a lot of interesting issues and features that can be dealt with in class with my students.

If you've never read Paul Jennings' stories before, you can visit British Council's BritLit website. You'll find at least two of his stories there with some teaching ideas provided. You can get a feel for the kind of stories he writes before deciding whether to purchase this book or his other books for your class and school libraries.

What a Great Story!

Bernard Cornwell's "Waterloo, Sharpe's Final Adventure" is fast paced fun and an action packed thriller. Here Cornwell tells the story of Waterloo; the unbelievable hubris of the commanders (both sides), the complete waste of human life and especially the fear of the average soldiers. Cornwell paints a picture of France and anti-French forces coming together to do battle, somewhat like two huge forces on a collision course. The point of view is more from the average soldier and not from the generals, so don't count on a lot of quotes from Napoleon or Wellington.
This time Sharpe is a lieutenant-colonel in the Belgian Light Dragoons under the command of the 23 year old Belgian Prince of Orange. Sharpe's primary function is to provide military advice to the youthful prince and try to keep himself from killing the idiotic monarch. Really he is there to collect soldier pay. Along the way Sharpe encounters a wife's betrayal, monumental military bumbling, senseless slaughter, and of course battle. For it wouldn't really be a Sharpe story without battle.
However, (and I cannot put my finger on it) "Waterloo" is written differently from Sharpe's other stories. Perhaps the characters are more mature or maybe it is the fact that half of the story is about the actual battle. Cornwell's Sharpe's books usually devote a chapter to the battle and not half a book. But lets face it the battle is one of the biggest in history.
What makes Sharpe stories so great is the writing, Cornwell knows how to convey a story and keep it interesting. I recommend this book to military history buffs, arm-chair generals, and any one else who enjoys a story told well.

Yes, but who won?

I was dining a few nights ago with - oddly enough - a German,an Englishman, and a Frenchman.
The topic came around to Waterloo. The Frenchman told the table that Napoleon didn't lose. He made a strategic defeat, and anyway it was the Prussians who won the battle. The German said the Prussians won the battle, and the French were beaten spitless. The Englishman said that Wellington and his army of scum won the battle, that Napoleon ran like a rabbit, and the Prussians arrived too late to do anybody any good. Before sabres were drawn, I poured another port and laid out an excellent Blue Vein cheese from New Zealand's Kapiti Coast.
No matter what Cornwell did with this Sharpe story, he was going to be in trouble. I loved the book. Great battle! It's hardly a Sharpe book at all: Sharpe's merely the device Cornwell uses to draw the battle together for the reader.
But Cornwell was always going to cop it in the neck from the Dutch (What? The Dutch run? Never! ) He was always going to be mocked by the Germans (Loiter on the way to a battle? Nein! ). The French have never believed they lost the battle anyway, so Cornwell's version would have to wrong, wrong, wrong.
The book's an entertainment, so let's not get our knickers in a twist about "the facts". It's Cornwell's view of the battle - accept that. And when you come to accept it as an entertainment, you'll enjoy it. This is battle on a huge scale - the largest number of men ever committed to battle at the time. And it's described expertly, with a feel for the blood, terror, glory, and unthinking heroism of the day.
Deeply satisfying, dramatic, gory - with a neat wrap-up for Sharpe's adulterous [...] ex. What more could you want for a Sunday afternoon?

About the Author
James Marshall was one of the most prolific and successful author/illustrators of children's books. He was best known for his series on the mischievous exploits of Fox, a debonair, lazy showoff; the uproarious adventures of the two Cut-Ups, Spud and Joe; George and Martha; and the misadventures of the Stupidfamily. He divided his time between an apartment in the Chelsea district of New York and his home in Mansfield Hollow Connecticut.

Pretty good book

My book is called Fox Outfoxed. The mane characters are Fox, Louse, Carmen, Dexter and they are wanting to win a race and the race was in the afternoon. They were doing the race outside to have fun. I think fox Fox Outfoxed is a good book because it is about some animals that sometimes have adventures and go to school. That's why I think it is a good book. And I would recommend this to my sister, Katie, because she likes animals and there are lots of animals in the book. By Matthew Z.

Fun and engaging early reader

My daughter is 5 and found the books in the Puffin Easy-to-Read series (level 1) to be just the right stage for her in developing her reading skills. She is able to read them with a high level of fluency and the success she experiences with these books has given her more confidence and motivated her to read more. Level 1 here is for ages 4-7 (as recommended by the publisher). There are familiar sight words appropriate for this level.

The stories in this series are engaging and come with full-color illustrations which interest young readers. The story here is about two precocious kittens, Pat and Matt who enjoy playing games. Their romps around the tree make this a funny and interesting read.I highly recommend this beginning reader series!
