Highland Tale
By bigdogohio
For anyone familiar with the very popular BBC series Monarch of the Glen, much in this audio book will ring familiar. And, for those unfortunate not to be familiar with the series, the book will be an entree into the world of a Scottish Highland Chieftan of the 20th Century.
The tale takes place in Scotland in the early 1940's at the castle Glenbogle, the ancestral estate of the Clan MacDonald. The patriarch is a stodgy old Highlander trying to make the best of the 20th century, but with his values firmly planted 400 years earlier. There's a bit of everything in here, a love story, a battle, some history as to kilts and clans and highland lore. Quite of lot of Gaelic is spoken and by the end of the story some of it actually starts to sound familiar.
The narrator does an excellent job with the wide cast of characters ranging from Americans, to Brits and Scots. I found myself laughing out loud many times. It was a great "read" on my way to and from work.
A note of caution though for those who have seen the series: There is only a hint of similarity to the series, but don't let the name changes etc turn you off, the story in total could easily have taken place in the Glenbogle we've seen on film.

A great "prequel" for the TV series

If you're expecting to "see" Archie, Golly, Duncan, et al, they're not around...yet...in this audio version of MacKenzie's novel, which takes place between the two world wars.
Despite a bit of a slow start, the book is a hoot and will definitely get you through a long car trip, or many long commutes! David Rintoul's reading is excellent and never monotonous. You'll get a good flavour of Highland life and traditions and have more than a few laughs.

good clean fun
By D. Chandler
I had never heard of Compton Mackenzie until a few years ago when I rescued a copy of "Hunting the Fairies" from a newspaper recycling bin (a guy in our town died and his idiot family dumped his book collection---I rescued hundreds for our library book sale.) "Hunting the Fairies" was that rare book which made me laugh out loud and also feel warm and uplifted. The Monarch of the Glen continues with some of the same characters and has the same humanity and wit. The humor is gentle but not sappy, satirical but not mean, and the characters are keenly observed from real life. This book is a very entertaining read, plus you'll learn a thing or two about Scottish history and culture.

Growing Up Ethnic in America: Contemporary Fiction About Learning to Be American, by Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Jennifer Gillan

The editors who brought us Unsettling America and Identity Lessons have compiled a short-story anthology that focuses on themes of racial and ethnic assimilation. With humor, passion, and grace, the contributors lay bare poignant attempts at conformity and the alienation sometimes experienced by ethnic Americans. But they also tell of the strength gained through the preservation of their communities, and the realization that it was often their difference from the norm that helped them to succeed. In pieces suggesting that American identity is far from settled, these writers illustrate the diversity that is the source of both the nation's great discord and infinite promise.

From Booklist
The stories and memoirs in this collection are great: Sherman Alexie, Amy Tan, Toni Morrison, E. L. Doctorow, Sandra Cisneros, and many more of our best writers deal directly, but never simplistically, with the conflicts of becoming American. They personalize what you lose by crossing borders, what you leave behind, what you gain, what America gains. They write with humor and poignancy, rooted in particulars that speak to everyone about dislocation, about being an outsider at school, in the neighborhood, at home. Some stories will be new to most readers; some are often anthologized. In her fine introduction, Jennifer Gillan points out that the stories show empathy without sweet nostalgia or any idealization of ethnicity. This kind of collection, with its literary quality and multiple perspectives, is the best answer to those who expect only messages with multiculturalism and who sneer "P.C." at the mention of diversity. Hazel Rochman

From Kirkus Reviews
A companion volume to Unsettling America: An Anthology of Contemporary Multicultural American Poetry that draws on work by some first-rate writers to make the point that that modern ideas about what it means to be an American are changing. The change, of course, is a result both of the influx of new immigrants and of the growing awareness of distinct identities and unique histories among older immigrant groups. While this is not entirely news, the Gillans generally strong anthology does demonstrate the ways in which some very skilled writers have explored these issues. The tales are divided into four sections: ``Performing'' gathers stories (by E.L. Doctorow, Amy Tan, Gary Soto, and Daryl Pinckney, among others) that focus on the ways members of distinct ethnic communities have tried to identify and (to varying extent) adapt or imitate concepts about what it means to be an American. The tales in ``Crossing'' (which includes work by Toni Morrison, Sandra Cisneros, and Lynne Sharon Schwartz) follow a variety of hesitant efforts by such individuals to straddle the divide between their cultures and American society. ``Negotiating'' features stories (by, among others, Gish Jen, Bruce Jacobs, and Diane Glancy) that probe the many ways in which those without much power to effect change try to find some sense of security in the US without entirely jettisoning their past. And the pieces in ``Bridging'' (including those by Sherman Alexie, Simon Ortiz, and Sylvia Watanabe) deal largely with the efforts of outsiders to reconnect with the cultures they have left behind. The stories, set largely in the recent past or in the present, and ranging in setting from Indian reservations to besieged urban neighborhoods, offer some sensitive and compelling readings of the struggles of those often rendered voiceless by society. An impressive gathering of tales charting the turbulent nature of modern American society, and the efforts of individuals and groups often considered outside the mainstream to discover and maintain their identities. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. BUY THIS BOOK, SHARE IT, TEACH IT, CHERISH IT!!!
By AN EDUCATED READER
"Growing Up Ethnic in America" is an immensley important anthology of honest, emotionally-charged, compassionate prose by established and newly emerging writers of all backgrounds. It is a testament to the truly groundbreaking work that the Gillans have been doing in book after book. This dynamic cultural duo have managed to not only change the face of mainstream anthologies by challenging the same old dominance of the mostly white male contributor, but have managed to create teaching tools for teachers faced with educating students of diverse backgrounds. I don't know how many times a student has come to me testifying that something they read in "Growing Up Ethnic in America" speaks to their personal experience and has inspired them to write, think and feel deeply, not only about themselves, but of others as well. "Growing Up Ethnic in America" is a life-changing anthology of brave and honest testimony from those often pushed to the margins of our society. The Gillans have done a remarkable job in culling together all of these fascinating and incredible writers. This should be one ... anyone's book club; but especially for educators and readers who truly care about where we've been as a country, where we are, and where we are headed.

Amazon.com Review
A William Trevor novel offers the pleasures of a world so thoroughly imagined it makes real life seem murky and badly conceived. When, as in Death in Summer or in his previous novel, Felicia's Journey, his subtle vision meets the rigorous pacing of the thriller, the result chills to the bone. Like a mystery, Death in Summer begins with one premature demise and ends with another; in between, however, Trevor explores the darkest corners of the human heart with a subtlety and compassion rarely seen in works of suspense.

Handsome Thaddeus Davenant has just buried his young, wildly generous wife Letitia--a rescuer of stray dogs and a champion of street drunks. In contrast, Thaddeus is a kind of emotional cripple, scarred by a childhood spent lonely and unloved in his ancestral Quincunx House. He married Letitia for her money, as is immediately clear. Yet he would have loved her, if he had been able, and after their child is born he feels for the first time "possessed by an affection he had been unable to feel for anyone since his own infancy." When Letitia dies, victim of a freak accident, and none of the nannies interviewed prove suitable, her mother moves in to care for the baby. Mrs. Iveson has always considered Thaddeus "shoddy goods," and their détente only gradually thaws into something resembling warmth. Meanwhile, Pettie, one of the rejected nannies, has "taken a shine" to Thaddeus--with increasingly ominous results.

Pettie inhabits a world far removed from the genteel decay of Quincunx House. Reared in the nightmarish Morning Star home, where the only affection was the creepy kind dispensed by her "Sunday uncle," Pettie is poor, broken, and pathologically starved for love. Trevor chronicles her obsession with Thaddeus in a way that makes clear both Pettie's humanity and her capacity to do serious harm. Still, this is a hopeful book. Grim as Pettie's story may be, she causes stony-hearted Thaddeus to feel the first stirrings of human sympathy, "as the warmth of blood might miraculously seep into a shadow, or anesthesia be lifted by a jolt...." Throughout William Trevor's long and storied career, his subject has been nothing less than the problem of evil, and in Death in Summer, he makes a convincing case for its origins in the absence of love. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
A hot, beautiful summer in Essex provides the background for Trevor's latest novel, in which three deaths occur and people from all of England's social classes interact in unexpected ways. Thaddeus Davenant, the penurious descendant of an illustrious family, marries Letitia Iveson for her money but learns to appreciate her gentle goodness. When she dies in a freak accident, he's left with their infant daughter. After his interviews with nanny applicants fail to produce a candidate, his mother-in-law volunteers to move into Quincunx House to care for Georgina. But Thaddeus has unwittingly introduced evil into his household. Devastated when she is not hired as Georgina's nanny, desperate, love-starved Pettie, brought up in a foster home where she was sexually abused, becomes obsessed with the life she imagines she would live with Thaddeus and concocts a plan to remove Mrs. Iveson from the scene. Meanwhile, Thaddeus is forced to come to the aid of his former mistress, a lower-class woman whose illness and death coincide with his other crises. Trevor's insight into human nature and his dexterity in depicting characters from the lower strata of society are again displayed in this mesmerizing story. Pettie, like the heroine of Felicia's Journey (1995), has neither a consoling family nor inner resources to sustain her. The contrasts between Quincunx House and the Morning Star youth home, and between the genteel stoicism of the upper classes and the desperation of those with nothing to lose, are stunningly clear. As usual, Trevor's prose is meticulous and restrained, and surprises resonate after their quiet disclosure. His message?that life is cruel because death is random, but for some, life's cruelty is such that death is a balm?is conveyed with the ease of a master storyteller and humane observer.

From Library Journal
Master storyteller Trevor's (After Rain, LJ 9/15/96) new novel is a suspenseful portrait of a tragic death and the consequences it brings. After the sudden death of his wife, Thaddeus Davenant must make arrangements for the care of his baby daughter. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Iveson, guides him as he advertises and interviews for a nanny. When a suitable candidate can't be found, Mrs. Iveson offers to fill the role herself. Another death and the escalating intrusions of Pettie, one of the rejected applicants, shatter the quiet life they have started to rebuild, forcing permanent changes. Trevor draws his characters using subtle lines, letting the reader see inside their minds to convey their troubled psychological depths. Another winner from Trevor.

Trevor's prose is difficult for some to tolerate,
By A Customer
but if you are willing to trace the route he uses to arrive at his conclusion, you will be rewarded. Trevor writes impressionistically, describing a slow, backlit reality hung with moody distractions and twice thought memories that are at once sharp and vague. There is a pervasive ambiguity that subtly threatens to coalesce into an all too clear knowledge of the truth.
It takes the entire book to complete the picture of the inhabitants of this broken world. The characters continue to recede before us dropping only crumbs. We have to be willing to gather these crumbs in order to come up with the complete picture, even though we are able to guess at some of the consequences. In all this is a rewarding, if difficult, book to read.

Well done, but why bother?
By A Customer
Trevor has succeeded in producing a well-written, well-constructed novel about uninteresting characters. Perhaps the book is simply too spare and short. Robert Graves called the verse of D.H. Lawrence "not poems, but rather outlines for poems." DEATH IN SUMMER strikes me as less a novel than the outline for a novel. To win our sympathy, these dry, pale figures would need more flesh, more color, more background. Understatement is sometimes a literary virtue, but here it's exaggerated to the point of dullness.

A Wonder of Words and Moods
By Grady Harp
Death in Summer is one of the more appropriate titles for a novel I've seen in a while. William Trevor is a gifted writer, one of characteristic styles that are fascinating, illuminating..yet with a dark view of the world that begs for light. The stories of three deaths, bizarrely interrelated in a strange English place, is only a superficial tease of what lies within and beneath this fine novel. The real passings are about the deaths of life views that occur when indescribable losses alter our lives. Trevor has an uncanny ability to vary his vocabulary/tone/philosophical views/visceral descriptions adjusted according to which of his myriad characters is relating a view of the story. Whether the description of a garden is eloquent when from the mind and mouth of the gentrified owners of the mansion where the story takes place, or the interior of a cafe is puncutated with the glassy views of a declining, bosomy "loose woman", or the stagnation of a squalid orphanage is regarded with acceptance by the ne're-do-well young folks of the street - with each of these disparate voices Trevor allows authenticity beyond the abilities of most contemporary authors. At times his stream of conscious style of writing causes the need to retrace pages to make sure where we are, but that is a glory in and of itself. THAT is how submerged the reader becomes when reading this fine book. It has its own life!

Amazon.com Review
A vocational counselor for 20 years and the author of five career-related books, Robin Ryan says job interviews are like everything else these days: With time shrinking and distractions growing, you must sell yourself in short sound bites or you probably won't sell yourself at all. And as she believes that--even in job interviews--this means many of us can no longer truly focus our attention for more than a minute at a time, that's how she oriented this snappy career guide. The updated edition of 60 Seconds & You're Hired! (originally published in 1994) incorporates recent hiring trends and some strategies to meet them, but essentially reiterates Ryan's original method for effectively consolidating top attributes into five key themes and then repeatedly communicating them in precise, under-a-minute exchanges. She clearly explains how to distill strengths into verbal bullet points, refine them for specific interviews, and succinctly deliver them in appropriate responses. (For example, "What do you know about our company?" is a chance crisply to combine what the firm needs with one or more of your key themes.) The advice can be absorbed and utilized even the night before an interview, but more preparation would undoubtedly increase results. --Howard Rothman

very concise
By Haseeb
This book is based on the idea that if you prepare for an interview properly, you will be hard to top in the selection process. The author of this book is regarded as one of the top career authorities in the nation. She suggests that the "60 second sell" (sometimes called an infomercial) is the most important part on the interview. The 60 second sell is a concise statement detailing the skills and qualities that would be most useful in working on the job one is interviewing for. The 60 second sell comes out of "a five point agenda" which are five statements regarding one's achievements that are relevent to the targeted position. The other information includes the types of questions one is likely to be asked, some suggested answers, questions you should ask, negotiating salary and pitfalls to avoid. If the information in this book is used the right way, I can't see why a person wouldn't get hired to any job he's qualified for.
I've been on many interviews over the years and failed miserably on some due to a lack of foresight and preparation. I really needed a book like this because there was so much that I was overlooking and now I can see exactly where I went wrong. I will study this book and prepare for my interviews accordingly. I would like to point out that the questions in the book and answers are not to be taken literally. Don't answer all interview questions by memorizing the answers given in this book. Use them only as guidelines to make up variations of the same questions and consider the suggested answers and use your best judgement.

If I'd only had this book sooner!!
By A Customer
This book is VERY effective. I got the job I was applying for AND the additional salary thanks to Ryan's techniques. My roommates both got jobs they were applying for after I 'loaned' them my copy. Using Ryan's techniques, you can really turn those hard, off-the-wall questions into opportunities to show employers why you're the best job candidate. Pluses include the section of what NOT to say in interviews. I found myself guilty of a couple (I'm not telling which ones though!). Also liked the salary negotiation section, especially the part regarding when it's appropriate to bring up salary questions. This book's got great information that the average job seeker (myself included) just doesn't think of. It really gives you an advantage over the other job candidates. Don't be caught speechless, winding up saying the wrong thing again! Get this book, and I'll betcha you'll never leave another interview saying, "I can't believe I said that!"

The most helpful job book I own (I own a lot)...
By Andrea PS
While the book requires some soul-searching on the part of the reader, it isn't new-agey or hoakey. It gives practical advice on finding your strong points, then tailoring them to answer specific interview questions.
The salary tips are great, as is the section on questions to ask the interviewer. On my last interview, my now-boss kept saying how impressed she was with my "intelligent questions."
Overall, this book is easy to read, interesting and helpful. It's a keeper.

The Penguin Book of Irish VerseFrom Penguin Classics

This anthology of verse illustrates the origins and development of the Irish poetic tradition. From the 17th century to the present day, the poetry of Ireland is testimony to the power of the imagination to withstand systematic oppression and the forces of history. In this selection Brendan Kennelly has chosen to emphasize the fusion of Irish and Anglo-Irish poetry, with the beauty of many Gaelic poems rendered into eloquent English by Frank O'Connor. The whole spectrum of Irish verse is covered, with anonymous and lesser-known poems standing alongside those by such famous artists as Swift, Goldsmith, Yeats and, more recently, Beckett, MacNeice, Heaney and Muldoon.

It is 1814 and the defeat of Napolean seems imminent - if the well-protected city of Toulouse can be conquered. For Richard Sharpe, the battle turns out to be one of the bloodiest of the Peninsula Wars, and he must draw on his last reserves of strength to lead his troops to victory.

But before Sharpe can lay down his sword, he must fight a different sort of battle. Accused of stealing Napolean's personal treasure, Sharpe escapes from a British military court and embarks on the battle of his life - armed only with the unflinching resolve to protect his honor.

Bittersweet Sharpe
By Matthew P. Ward
If I can grossly break Sharpe readers into two camps (those who read just for the battle scenes, and those who read for the story of Richard Sharpe, of which battle scenes are one thrilling part), then Sharpe's Revenge is definitely for the second group. Other than the surprisingly hard-fought battle of Toulouse at the start, Revenge concerns Sharpe's (almost) one-man adventures in post-war Europe.
It's a strange world for Sharpe (and the Sharpe reader), one in which the dogged British army we've come to admire through ten books of the Peninsula War is no longer the underdog fighting overwhelming odds, but is the overwhelming force itself. Everyone knows Napoleon is doomed. Indeed, it's sad to read about the bloodshed at Toulouse because sacrifices which seemed heroic a year earlier just seemed tragically unnecessary in April 1814. What a sad thing to be the last soldier killed in a war.
Like the army, Sharpe is changing. As he gets older (he's now 36), he's losing his relish for battle and finding it harder to keep down the fear. For much of the book, his friend Frederickson is the go-getter, as Sharpe struggles with self-doubt over his post-army role, his wife's infidelities, etc.
And, after victory, the army is broken apart and Sharpe is adrift in this new world. But, of course, not for long. There's one more adventure with Harper and out of it, Sharpe's post-war world takes shape.

Amazon.com Review
If you are a mother and many of your conversations with your teenage daughter begin with a rolling of eyes, move into shrieked insults, and end with a door slam, I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You! could save you both. As Roni Cohen-Sandler and Michelle Silver illustrate, even if you often seem to be living on two different planets, conflict does not have to define your relationship.

Cohen-Sandler, a clinical psychologist specializing in issues of women and adolescent girls, and Silver, senior editor of Girls' Life magazine, have done mothers a great service with this thoroughly researched book. Their main point is simple: arguments are bound to occur, but if approached correctly, confrontation can actually lead to deeper mutual understanding and a stronger mother-daughter bond. Consistently working through battles also demonstrates a sense of constancy that will offer good lessons for future relationships. Through case studies, exercises, and detailed scenarios, the authors describe the most effective ways to communicate about such loaded topics as dating, sexuality, drugs and alcohol, and peer pressure, paying particular attention to the "classic battle starters": the state of her bedroom, her clothing, and her makeup and jewelry choices. Other in-depth chapters focus on the right and wrong ways to respond to verbal attacks and the importance of choosing battles wisely. Some of their advice will not be easy to follow, especially when the fight is on, but if some effort is exerted, these tips should help mothers and daughters not only survive, but even enjoy, the teen years.

From Publishers Weekly
Cohen-Sandler, a psychologist, and Silver, an editor of Girl's Life magazine, offer advice to mothers anxious about surviving their daughters' teen years. The authors assume that conflict is a given. Their aim is to provide mothers with strategies for coping with problems and even turning them into something positive. They reason that if girls learn how to handle conflict early on, if they can develop constructive ways of coping with their emotions, they will be that much further ahead in life. The authors offer some interesting examples and suggestions: advising mothers to choose their battles carefully and to calm themselves down before confronting their daughters. They take the usual approach of telling readers what to say and what not to say through a series of short, familiar vignettes. The organization is confusing, however, and leads to some repetition. In their attempt to be sympathetic to teens, the authors at times sound like apologists ("This kind of exasperating self-centeredness, for better or worse, is simply a part of being a teen"), making mothers want to tiptoe timidly around their daughters. The authors shy away from some big issues as well: they tell the story of a mother waiting for the results of a daughter's HIV test but squelch the opportunity to discuss AIDS issues in general. By the time they finish reading, mothers may find themselves yearning for a chapter, if not an entire book, written especially for their daughters on the pressures of motherhood.

From Library Journal
Cohen-Sandler, a clinical psychologist, and Silver, the senior editor of Girls' Life, present a commonsense guide to communication between mothers and teenage daughters. The book's value lies in concrete examples of events most mothers and daughters face as they mature. After a slow start, the numerous scenarios and conversation excerpts illustrate things to do and say quite well. More importantly, what not to do and say is also detailed. The authors briefly discuss some of the serious and life-threatening issues that may confront some parents and teens. Excellent checklists help determine whether a professional should be consulted. The authors recognize that this is easier said than done, but they reassure mothers that they are not alone and should trust their instincts and stay the course. This pep talk could be read daily by every mother of a teenage daughter. Recommended for public libraries. (Index and bibliography not seen.)AMargaret Cardwell, Georgia Perimeter Coll., Clarkston

best book re teenage girls
By A Customer
At a time when I was ready to give up on being a mother till my teen "grew up", this book was a godsend. My feelings of desperation, confusion, loss, and wondering where I went wrong were all validated. I have already started trying techniques recommended. Even if it doesn't change my daughter, my perception has changed so that I'm better able to cope. Very readable (not a bunch of jargon) I'd recommend it to any mother of a teenage girl. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because there were no illustrations. Of course, as an adult I don't have to have them, but I like them. Sometimes a well-placed cartoon helps to illustrate a point. It may be the authors thought illustrations are inappropriate for their book.

Good News For Mothers and Daughters
By A Customer
This work is an interesting and practical guide on how to maange the highs and lows of mother/daughter relationships. Cohen-Sandler and Silver not only offer valuable insights into the sensitive realtionship between mothers and teenage daughters, but they also present specific how-to's for building and maintaining a healthy relationship. This book begins by asking mothers to examine their own strengths and weaknesses in their role as parent and mentor. Next, the reader journeys through the characteristics of the teenage girl in today's society. Mothers are then given specific advice on how to handle numerous crises. The authors reassure us that conflict does not have to be a bad thing, as long as it is managed in a postive way. Although the book is very readable, the early chapters challenge the readers patience. The authors relate stories of several mothers and their daughters. However, they separate the stories in two different chapters. Although I understood their reasoning for focusing on the mothers and daughters in individual chapters, I found it tiresome to flip back and forth between the chapters to remind myself which mother was connected to which daughter. This book is a valuable read and I recommend it to both mothers and daughters who wish to remain actively engaged in one of the most influential relationships of their lives.

No, I'm not going crazy!
By Lolly H
I thought I going was nuts, not knowing how to parent my pre-teen. At last, a book to let me know I was not going crazy by myself, that it is perfectly normal what we are going through, why I as the mom am the target and spring board for her growing up. It also gives ideas on how to rethink parenting, your responses to issues. It shows why "I" the mom am the only one, cuz I'm the closest one to her, that she is 'experimenting with life' off of. I don't feel so alone, I'm okay, and can see why I get the backwash, and the testing. I highly recommend this book to other moms and also dads too, so they can understand the battle while they watch from the sidelines.

Amazon.com Review
When an aged lunatic named Putnam arrives at a poorhouse farm in rural Vermont in 1855, he is treated as little more than a beast by everyone except the orphan Jip, who himself arrived at the charity orphanage/asylum after being found abandoned by the roadside. Jip and Putnam become friends, then allies of a sort, as Jip struggles to improve his own lot and that of his friend Lucy, the unfortunate daughter of the late town drunk. This historical tale by Katherine Paterson involves its young protagonist in the great 19th century struggle between slave owners and abolitionists while sending him into a test of his own loyalty and courage. Paterson handles weighty issues with grace and verve, and does not shrink from terrible truths in this challenging novel for young readers.

From Publishers Weekly
This historical novel about a maltreated orphan "is full of revelations and surprises," said PW's starred review; "first-rate entertainment." Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9?Paterson's companion novel to Lyddie (Lodestar, 1991) rewards readers with memorable characters and a gripping plot. Jip has been told that he tumbled off the back of a wagon when he was a toddler in 1847. He has been raised on a poor farm in a Vermont town, where he is an indispensable asset to the lazy manager and his equally lazy wife. The boy befriends the newly arrived "lunatic" Put, who is kept imprisoned in a cage because he is subject to violent, self-destructive episodes. Jip's life is quietly circumscribed-until a stranger plants the idea that his father might be searching for him. Although he has long fantasized that a loving parent awaits him, he sees the stranger as an unlikely messenger. His instincts prove correct when the man is revealed to be a slave catcher. Then Jip learns the truth about his past: his mother was a runaway slave. With the help of his teacher, Lyddie Worthen, and her sweetheart, Quaker neighbor Luke Stevens, Jip escapes to Canada, where he is welcomed as a free man into the home of a former slave whom Lyddie helped shelter in the earlier book. Paterson's story resonates with respect for the Vermont landscape and its mid-19th-century residents, with the drama of life during a dark period in our nation's history, and with the human quest for freedom. Fans of the previous book will relish meeting up with Lyddie and Luke again at a somewhat later period in their lives. Readers will be talking and thinking about this book long after they finish the last chapter.?Ellen Fader, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR

Jip His Story
By Jordan Sawyers
Jip His Story Penguin Group, 1996, 180 pp., $5.99
Katherine Paterson ISBN 0-H0386712
How would you feel if everybody told you that when you were a baby, you fell off the back of a wagon and nobody came back for you and the only person who knows the truth is a complete stranger who has been following your every move? That's what happened to Jip, the protagonist of Katherine Paterson's Jip His Story. When he tries to find out answers, his whole world is turned upside down.
Jip is a thirteen year-old boy who lives on a barn with Mr. and Ms. Lyman, neither of which are his real parents. Supposedly, Jip fell off the back off of a wagon and no one came back for him or even cared. Mr. Lyman found Jip on the side of the road and took him back to his barn. As soon as Jip was old enough to work, Mr. Lyman put him to work in the barn; they made hi feed the animals clean the house. Jip had to do all the dirty work. Jip hates working in the barn.
One day a truck pulled up to the barn and in the back was a guy who everyone thought was a lunatic. At first Jip was frightened to talk to him, but when he got to know him, this lunatic became his best friend Put. Jip eventually decides that he wants to find his real parents and get as far away from the Lyman's and the barn as possible. Jip doesn't know exactly where he needs to go, but he knows he needs to get away. Jip and Put are on a quest to leave the town, but bad things start to happen when a mysterious stranger starts following Jip, telling him he knows his real dad.
This is a really excellent book about friendship and trust. I recommend this book to anyone who likes books in the genre of realistic fiction. This book has a lot of adventure in it too. I really got into this book and I couldn't put it down. This is not the first Katherine Paterson book I have read and enjoyed, but it is one of my favorites. Katherine Paterson is a fabulous writer children's author who hooks you into her writing. She makes you feel like you're the story.
This book is a lot like the book Stuart Little, in Stuart Little, a little boy didn't think he could be friends with a mouse, just like Jip didn't think he would be able to be friends with a lunatic. If you are looking for a good book to read, I suggest that you go get Jip His Story right now. It's a great book to read for enjoyment and I think that everybody should read it. There is not a certain age group who should read this book. It's a book that almost anybody can read and enjoy.

The Best Book I was forced To read. ...
By A Customer
This book was really good. I'm 11 and in Language Arts we did an author study on Katherine Paterson. I was required to read this book. At first it seemed pretty boring but once I passed the 2nd chapter I fell in love with it.
Oh yea in case you was wondering the book is about a boy named Jip. His name is Jip because it is like short for gypsy. Everyone said Jip was a gypsy baby because he fell off this wagon and was abandon. Well anyway he lives in the Poor Town. He has to work really hard and take care of everyone, he is basically the ONLY reliable person there. One day, this lunatic comes into the town. He's name is Put. Jip and Put have a special connection and they become fast friends. At the same time, he has many other friends on the town who are somewhat jealous of Put and Jip's relationship. One day a stranger comes into town and he might have the information about Jip's past. When jip finds out who he truly is he takes a turn for the worst. he has to leave behind everything in order to save himself. The most difficult thing he must do is realize Put isn't well enough to come. Wheather that stops him from bringing him anyway, I just can't tell you ...

Not what it seems...
By Avid
Jip: His Story is far from a typical story. This historical fiction provides great insight into the Underground Railroad simply through understatement! Jip, receiving his name from the belief that he fell off the back of a gypsy wagon that didn't care to stop for him, grows up on the local poor farm. Even in the most dier circumstances, Jip finds a friend in the newest poor farm resident - the lunatic. When a stranger shows up with a suspicious interest in Jip, Jip begins his baffling search for identity. I love the perspective of this book and Patterson's subtle story. I wish I could say more, but don't want to ruin the unfolding of the true conflict.
