The 12-year-old volunteers to stay alone with his 6-year-old physically disabled sister so their parents can get to the hospital as quickly as possible. What should have been only an afternoon's inconvenience turns into a deadly situation when an earthquake strikes, destroying the camping area and threatening to flood the entire island. With no food, supplies, or means of contacting help, Jonathan must find a way to save Abby and himself. The tautly written story sustains the suspense without ever becoming melodramatic. Jonathan is a sympathetic and realistic character. His sensitive response to Abby's fears is mature but never unbelievable. This exciting tale is a fine choice for most collections.

Gr. 4^-7. Prolific author Kehret has a well-deserved reputation for writing good, solid thrillers for middle-graders. Even if the premise is a bit shaky (would parents really leave their children alone on a remote island?) and the ending disappoints just a bit, her latest is no exception. It pits a resourceful 12-year-old against the elements and has him come out on top. Jonathan doesn't think that taking care of his disabled 6-year-old sister, Abby, while his father rushes his mother to a hospital for a broken ankle will be too problematic--until nature intervenes. An earthquake rocks the tiny island where the children are staying, destroying the bridge to the mainland as well as the family's supplies and Abby's walker. Even more frightening is Jonathan's discovery that the quake has caused a nearby river to change its course: water is now rapidly flooding the tiny island. Earthquake terror
the book I did was Earthquake Terror. The author of my book is Peg Kehret. The main characters in the story are jonathan and Abby, but the mom and dad are kind of the main characters in the book but there not as important as the kids.
What happens in my story is that a family goes to a deserted campground and are taking a camp there and the mom gets heart. So the mom and the dad take off to go get help and they leave the kids cause they think they will slow them up. So when the kids are by them selves an earthquake starts and they have to get help and get out of there and they try to get out of the campground and bad things happen to the kids while they are trying to keep safe and get help.
The setting of the story takes place in an forest by a deserted campground. The theme of the story is the kids are trying to get help and get out of the forest because there is an earthquake.
I liked this story because it was a type of adventure type story and I like adventure stories. It also was a story like you think something bad is going to happen and your not sure and it makes you read on, like what is going to happen, and I like those kind of stories. I liked this book and I hpoe I can read another story like this one

Mother nature isn't always on your side....

During a camping trip, Jonathan and his sister, Abby, are put into a surpring situation that turns for the worst. The two children find themselves fighting for survival after a devastating earthquake hits. Alone, they must learn to survive and overcome their greatest fears.
Man vs. Nature
I read this book around maybe two or three years ago, but it still sticks in my mind as entertaining and great. If your into nature disasters, pick this book up.

The characters in the novel are Jonathan, Abby, Mrs. Palmer, Mr. Palmer, and their dog, Moose. The story happens at Magpie Island. There was a lot of trees and rivers. The theme is that nature is more powerful than man. The first thing that happens is the Palmers arrive at Magpie Island. Second, Mrs. Palmer breaks her ankle. Then Mr. and Mrs. Palmer go to the hospital, leaving Jonathan in charge. Next, while walking back to the camper, Moose starts acting strange. Then the ground begins to shake - earthquake!
After that, Jonathan and Abby find a smushed camper. Next, Jonathan finds out the bridge collapsed. Later, Magpie Island starts to flood, and Jonathan, Abby, and Moose start floating on trees. A few hours later, Jonathan and Abby separate, Jonathan gets hit by a tree, and he starts to drown. Moose helps and saves his life. Abby left her tree and swam all the way to a cabin where she fell asleep. After that, a rescue team saved Jonathan and abby and they were ok. Mrs. Palmer also underwent surgery on her ankle.
This quote, "Yes, he thought. Yes, I found the camper. But it isn't going to do us any good," (page 42) because it showed Jonathan understood the camper was smashed. It also showed that he understood he could do nothing about it.
I like this book for 3 reasons. The first reason is because the author ended the book with everyone being ok. Reason 2 is because the book was very realistic, and it made my heart jump. Reason 3 is because it didn't have pictures, that way you could visualize the whole story. I would definitely recommend someone else to read this book. I would because it is action-packed, intense, and very realistic.
