Grade 4-6?Another contribution to the Logan family saga, this is Father's account of an incident from his boyhood. During a drought in 1910, 10-year-old David Logan's family has the only working well in their part of Mississippi. They share their water willingly with both black and white neighbors, but white teenager Charlie Simms tests their generosity, goading David's older brother Hammer into a fight requiring restitution in the form of labor on the Simms's farm. Charlie and his brother get even for the disgrace of Hammer's beating by secretly contaminating the Logans' well with dead animals, only to be exposed and punished when a neighbor reveals their act. While David narrates, this is really Hammer's story; his pride and steely determination not to be put down are the source of the novel's action and power. Readers will feel the Logans' fear and righteous anger at the injustice and humiliation they suffer because they are black. Gr. 5-7. "Charlie Simms was always mean, and that's the truth of it." From the first line, this short, intense novel of racist violence is told with the immediacy of a family narrative. David Logan (the father in Taylor's 1977 Newbery Award winner, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry) tells a story of his boyhood in rural Mississippi at a time when "uppity niggers" can be hanged for thinking themselves equal to whites and the horror of slavery still haunts his mother's memory. The Logans are among the few black families to own land, and during a prolonged drought, they have a well of sweet water, which they share with their neighbors, black and white. Most people are grateful, but the white Simms family hates being beholden to blacks. The tense confrontation erupts in beatings and terror. The cast is large for so short a novel--it's hard sometimes to keep track of all the people in the community--but the Logan family is beautifully individualized. David is able to heed his father's warning, "Use your head, not your fists," but David's hotheaded older brother can't bear the constant humiliation. The well of the title is also a metaphor for the history of the place: both the bigotry that lies beneath the surface and the sweet strength of family ties. Hazel Rochman

This book is about a black family living in Mississippi in the early nineteen hundreds. It is hard for them to be treated fairly and get their own rights. It is especially hard for a boy named Hammer to live with this unfairness and unjustness. He lives with his family on a farm that has the only well with water still in it. There is a drought and everyone came to their well to get water, black people and white people, and no matter who it was they shared their water. Hammer has to put up with all this and even with his family's kindness to other people, they are still treated with unfairness. In Hammer's anger he ends up by hurting a white person and getting him and his family in shame and him in a lot of trouble. It did not help the the father of the white boy had a very bad temper and an even worse one for blacks. Hammer and his brother now had to work on the white man's farm for the rest of the summer. Hammer luckily behaved and held back his temper very well for that time period but his and his family's sufferings were still not over. One day when they woke up there was a terrible scent coming from the well. When they opened the lid to the well there were all sorts of dead animals floating in it. They found out that the white boys had played a joke and ruined their good water of the the well. They were sorry to find out that they had not only ruined the water for Hammer's family but their own and many others. Their father was completely ashamed and made them even more ashamed in front of everybody. He made his own boys go down in the well and get the animals with their own hands. After many months the well cleared and the water was good, but they never saw that white family at their well again. I really enjoyed reading this book because it was very, very exiting and realistic. I really felt like I was really there and I felt their worries and fears. It shows how it really was back then and how drastically life has changed. I think that this is a great book and fun children are over ten because the concept might be a little hard to understand when you are young. In addition there are some scary parts. This book was very detailed and you felt like you were there with them.

Book Review : The Well

The Well is a very compelling and resonant book by Mildred D. Taylor, the Newberry Award winner for Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. You will experience many emotions while reading this book, which are not limited to anger and sadness .The Well is set in the south during the mid 1910�s, a time in which deep-rooted racism is practiced and where whites can do and say anything they please with abandon to blacks.
David Logan tells a poignant story of his boyhood in Smallsville, Mississippi when blacks could be hanged for considering themselves as equals to whites. The Logan family, the main characters in the book, are among few black families to own land. During an awful drought, they have the only well of sweet water in the whole town of Smallsville. The author eloquently describes how the Logan�s believe that the water is not theirs to hoard but gods gift to share with black and white folks alike. Everyone is grateful to the Logan�s except the white Simms family who hate being obliged to blacks. David�s family lives by his father�s words, �use your head not your fists� but his insubordinate hotheaded brother Hammer is sick of the constant degrading of Charlie Simses and when Charlie pushes his handicapped brother with bitter rancor to the ground, Hammer reacts and does the unthinkable.
The characters are quickly and clearly brought into life, the setting is vividly drawn despite the frequent but historical use of the N word. The large cast of characters is masterfully individualized with opinions, beliefs, personalities and ways of life. I personally gained tremendous admiration for Mildred D. Taylor as an author for making such a luring plot seem so stupendous in a small book.

Well worth the reading!

This book is great! I would love to teach this book during my internship this fall. I have always been fascinated with history. Mildred Taylor has such a smooth way in which she writes her books. Not only are they sad and depressing, but they are motivating and enlightening. Her many books illustrate how evil and selfish our country was and in some ways still is today. I really appreciate the positive, strong image that is portrayed with the Logan family. Nothing makes me happier.
