Best general guide to NY available
By Mark Olwick
The Time Out Guide to New York is, in my opinion, the best general guidebook you can buy to the city. It's updated annually, so the material is fresh, but best of all it brings the Time Out attitude and style to the guide book series. It's filled with full color photos (similar to the Knopf guides) and the listings contain not only the usual sights, stores and attractions, but also some of the more funky, out of the way places.
Plusses:
- Comprehensive coverage of most areas (see restaurant note below) - Lots of photos - Web site addresses for most listings - Content is also on their web site ([...] and [...] ) and updated regularly. - Not just the usual "everything is great" attitude that you get with Frommers or Fodors. - Contains ads for shows, hotels, restaurants (I like this as it gives more of a picture of the item. NOTE: There's big disclaimer in the front stating that even though they accept ads, their reviewers are independent)
- Small enough to fit in purse or (larger) back pocket. - Good cross referencing between sections
Minuses:
- Restaurant section not comprehensive. It's still very good, but selective. This may be due to the fact that they also publish a very comprehensive restaurant guide to NY. - Portions of the museum section are a bit skimpy. For example, the Knopf guides have 3 or 4 pages on the Metropolitan Museum, including floor plans and highlights of each collection, whereas this guide has about two column-inches of text on the Met. - No web site listings for restaurants.
As I said, this is the best guide to New York I've found (and I have them all). Highly recommended.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 5-Joss Ackland reads 14 personal favorites from Grimm, some of which will be new to adults as well as children. Even familiar tales like "Cinderella" and "Little Red Riding Hood" will seem a little unfamiliar as the older versions of the stories are shared. "Cinderella" does not contain a fairy godmother; good fortune comes to the heroine through a kind bird who perches in a hazel bush growing from Cinderella's dead mother's grave. The menacing wolf in "Little Red Riding Hood" is dispatched by the huntsman. However, for listeners who think that the story ended there, Ackland reveals that Little Red Riding Hood ventured into the wood again and was approached by another wolf, equally threatening. Learning their lesson the first time, Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother drown the second wolf. Among the other tales are: "Snow White and Rose Red," "Rapunzel," "The Singing Bone," "Rumpelstiltskin," "Faithful John," "The Nixie of the Mill Pond," "The Mouse, the Bird and the Sausage," "The Sleeping Beauty," and four others. The rich style of these stories has an antique quality, and there is no attempt to modernize them. Likewise, there is no attempt to launder the tales to remove the violent justice or merciless cruelty heaped upon the heroes and heroines. The sound quality is excellent, and Ackland is a remarkable reader who uses his expressive voice to bring out the drama inherent in these stories. Listeners seeking authentic versions of these classic tales will find a unique resource in this collection. School media specialists and public librarians will find this an excellent addition to their folktale collections.ANancy L. Chu, Western Illinois University, Macomb

From the Inside Flap
Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Snow White are among the jewels we owe to the German brothers Grimm, who began in the first decade of the 19th century to seek out and listen to village storytellers. The best-loved of the tales they discovered are now brought together with the marvelous pictures that in 1900 first established the reputation of one of the greatest children's illustrators of all time, Arthur Rackham.

A quality children's book
By Amy Zimmerman
This beautifully illustrated book is a delight for Brothers Grimm and Arthur Rackham fans. High quality paper is used throughout so the color plates are presented where they occur in each story, instead of being jammed together in the center. The font is easy to read with ample margins, so the stories can be savored without feeling rushed or the aid of a good light. Well done!

Grimm brothers remain the best fairy tale-tellers ever
By Matt Hetling
This is one of the greatest fairy tale collections ever assembled. At a time when fairy tales and folk tales numbered in the thousands, the Grimms wrote and published a collection of just a few dozen gems, many of which remain classics to this day.

You are likely to have heard about many of these characters and stories. Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, two stories about Snow White, Cinderella, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, the Frog Prince, and the Golden Goose are just some of the more famous ones. To read the stories as they were originally written is a pleasure; to see that they all came from the same two minds is amazing. It would be like the Farrelly brothers directing films that won the Academy Award for best picture for ten years in a row.

It's also very fun to see the differences between these original stories and some of the versions that are floating around in popular culture. If you're thinking of buying a collection of fairy tales for your children, getting the actual stories instead of a sanitized Disney version will expose them to an important body of literature, and can serve as a starting point for many important discussions about the decisions that each character makes.

The book also has many wonderful stories that are less famous, but no less good. My favorites as a child included "The White Snake," which is about a man who eats a white snake and is given the power to talk with the animals; "The Six Servants" and "How Six Traveled Through the World," which each involve a set of servants with extraordinary powers; and "The Water of Life," in which three sons set off to find a magical elixir that can save their father.

There is no substitute for these magical and inventive tales, and this particular edition is extremely well done. There is at least one illustration for nearly every story, including some nicely done color plates that stimulate the imagination without substituting for it. The emphasis is definitely on the words rather than the pictures.

I highly recommend this book for children and adults alike.

America meant "freedom" to the immigrants of the early 1900s—but a freedom very different from what they expected.  Cities were crowded and jobs were scare.  Children had to work selling newspapers, delivering goods, and laboring sweatshops.  In this touching book, Newberry Medalist Russell Freedman offers a rare glimpse of what it meant to be a young newcomer to America.

Immigrant Kids - A Must Read!
By Mindy
This wonderful non-fiction book will be a hit with students at the 4th-6th grade level. The real life pictures of immigrant children in the neighborhoods of New York during the late 1800's and early 1900's that appear on almost every page of the book should hold the interest of even the most reluctant readers. However, while the reading itself is not too difficult for most 4th-6th grade students, much of the vocabulary explaining the era of that time will be unfamiliar to them so covering this book as a read-aloud may be most beneficial. Immigrant Kids provides a wonderful way to introduce students to immigration in the past and show how it has changed over time. It lends itself well to a discussion in history class on the various cultures that became part of the giant "mixing pot" we now call our country. Because this book is set in New York it can further be used to teach about the city of New York and its early beginnings. Possibly the one thing that will interest students the most about this book is that it is written from the perspective of children like themselves. Overall the historical content of this book is very well defined and accurate and the photograph driven text provides readers with a very non-threatening approach to information books. It is a must read in any 4th-6th grade history curriculum and can work as a wonderful addition to a reading curriculum when used in accompaniment with other books both fictional and factual dealing with the topic of immigration.

This book is an incredible description of life as an immgran
By A Customer
The life of an immigrant child was harsh. Russell Freedman accomplished his goal of showing how difficult an immigrant's life was through the use of descriptive words and photographs that make you thankful that you do not have to live like immigrant children of the past. The photographs captured our attention. Our fourth grade teacher shared this book with us. It helped us to learn about the conditions immigrants had to live under. We highly recommend this book!

The blend of visual and history will appeal to elementary grades 3-5
By Midwest Book Review
If your family came to America 100 years ago, what was life like for them? Newbery Medalist Russell Freedman provides insights which pair with vintage black and white photos to describe work challenges, living conditions and more. The blend of visual and history will appeal to elementary grades 3-5, but many an older reader will find it equally unusual & compelling.

At Home with the Marquis de Sade: A Life, by Francine Du Plessix Gray

A remarkable and unparalleled portrait of the Marquis de Sade and the two women who endured his peculiar genius

Much has been written about the Marquis de Sade (1740-1814), the flamboyant aristocrat whose years indulging in sexual aberrations inspired his celebrated works 120 Days of Sodom and Justine--and landed him in the Bastille. However, scant attention has been paid to the two women who were closest to him: Renee Pelagie de Sade, his adoring wife, and his powerful mother-in-law, Madame de Montreuil.

Francine du Plessix Gray draws on thousands of pages of letters exchanged by the married couple, few of which have been published before in English, to explore in the fullest historical and psychological detail what it was like to be married to one of the most maverick spirits of modern history. Gray brings to life two remarkable women and their complex relationship to Sade as they dedicated themselves to protecting him from the law, curbing his excesses, and ultimately confining him. With immediacy, irony, and verve, At Home with the Marquis de Sade also conjures up the extravagant hedonism and terror of late eighteenth-century France.

"At Home with the Marquis de Sade is not the first full-length life of Sade in English, but it is most likely to remain the best." --Chicago Tribune

"Boldly imaginative. . . . The long-suffering spouse of history's most infamous rake becomes a praiseworthy enabler of greatness." --The New York Times Book Review

Although few of us would choose the Marquis de Sade as a friend, there can be no doubt that he was one of history's most fascinating and colorful characters. This book eschews sensationalism and gives us a fascinating glimpse of the private world of the man who prompted psychiatrist, Kraft-Ebbing, in 1882, to coin the term "sadism." Interestingly, sadism played but a small part in the life of de Sade; he was as much a masochist as anything else.
de Sade was born in Paris in 1740; his young mother was governess and lady-in-waiting to Prince Condé. At the age of four, de Sade threw one too many temper tantrums and was sent to the south of France, to his doting grandmother in Avignon. From Avignon, he was sent to various Jesuit schools where, at the time, flogging and sodomy were common practice. This, the author convincingly argues, provided the needed catalyst for the emergence of de Sade's true personality.
de Sade married his only wife at an early age, the plain and ungraceful Pélagie Montreuil, daughter of the intelligent and ambitious Madame Montreuil. The Montreuil's had money but no familial link to the aristocracy. For a time Madame Montreuil excused the sexual forays of her new son-in-law, but eventually her forgiveness become too much for him to ask; she turned against de Sade with a bitterness, becoming not only his mother-in-law, but his lifelong nemesis as well.
His marriage to Pélagie, however was a surprisingly good one. de Sade apparently awakened long-repressed passions in the young girl that remained until their separation many years later when she rejected him with much fervor.
Eschewing Louis XV's court in Paris and in Versailles, de Sade preferred living on his estates in Provence, most particularly in the medieval hill village of Lacoste. In Lacoste, the marquis took full advantage of his feudal rights and looked upon the villagers as nothing more than serfs. While Madame Montreuil raised his three children in Paris, de Sade and Pélogie lived the high life in the chateau at Lacoste. de Sade, himself, made frequent trips to the Provençal capital of Marseilles where he maintained rented houses for prostitutes. His prostitutes, however, didn't especially care for the idea (or the actuality) of being whipped. They also found de Sade's sodomy and coprophilia perversions less than enticing. Depositions were soon filed and the frustrated pre-Republic parliament system, for whom the king was beyond reach, went after de Sade with fervor.
As a result of his depravity, de Sade found himself in and out of prison for the rest of his life. Perhaps it was megalomania, perhaps it was simply uncontrollable depravity, but each time de Sade was released from prison, he immediately set off and got into trouble once again. In Marseilles, he fed Spanish fly covered with anise to two prostitutes and they became so ill they accused the marquis of attempted poisoning. Back he went to prison.
Upon being released, he found, to his great delight, that Pélogie had hired an entire retune of beautiful young girls to live in the chateau at Lacoste and do the marquis' bidding. There followed six weeks of debauchery of the highest (or lowest) order, which only ended when the parents of the girls filed charges. This particular incident netted de Sade a thirteen-year prison term. Released after the fall of the Bastille, de Sade went on to hold a minor position in the National Assembly until Robespierre cast him unceremoniously into prison once again. Prison, however, wasn't all bad for de Sade, for it was there that he composed Justine and Juliette and many other now famous works. After the fall of Robespierre, de Sade was once again free, only to find himself committed (by Madame Montreuil) to the mental asylum at Charendon where he spent the remainder of his days, often conducting lavish theatrical productions that involved the other inmates.
This book is aptly named, for it brings de Sade to life through everyday details, many of them based on his letters to Pélogie. Although we know the marquis grew tremendously fat while incarcerated, most of us never knew why. When we read, in this book, his letters to Pélogie demanding goodies such as truffles, chocolates, jams, cakes "glazed on both sides" and other sweet treats, we not only understand de Sade's corpulence, we also feel a little sympathy for Pélogie, for although she tried to fulfill the marquis' demands, it wasn't an easy job; de Sade had bankrupted them, forcing Pélogie to live out her life in a convent.
Although this book is set against a rich historical background (the fall of Napoleon, the rise and fall of Robespierre), it is a detailed, "everyday" history that is portrayed as opposed to history on an epic scale. At Home With the Marquis de Sade is a well-researched, well-written and fascinating look at the everyday minutiae of a man who, although his name has become almost a household word, has heretofore been far too little understood.

Carefully Researched, Lucidly Written Life of de Sade
By A Customer
It often seems difficult for anyone reading a biography of the Marquis de Sade to approach the task objectively for the simple reason that his life and writings precede him in a way unlike most writers and historical figures. Thus, the noun precedes him--"sadist"-and the adjective-"sadistic"-our language itself fixing the man's transgressions before the fact of his biography, making the biography appear superfluous in light of the enormity of the man's crimes. But there was, indeed, a real human being behind the noun and the adjective--Donatien Alphonse Francois, Marquis de Sade--and Francine du Plessix Gray's "At Home With the Marquis de Sade" provides an insightful, sympathetic, well written picture of that human being in all his complexity.
Gray's biography concentrates largely on the relationship de Sade had with two women-his first wife, Renee-Pelagie de Sade, and his indomitable mother-in-law, Madame de Montreuil. De Sade's wife remained a constant companion to the erstwhile Marquis for more than a quarter century, suffering his sexual excesses (including dalliances with her younger sister, Anne-Prospere), the ensuing scandals and, ultimately, the many years of imprisonment. His mother-in-law, a social climbing women of fierce and irrepressible will who at first found the Marquis charming, ultimately became his worst oppressor, driven like the Eumenides to avenge de Sade's seduction of her virginal younger daughter, Anne-Prospere. She was, in Gray's characterization, a woman who exemplified "primitive female fury, a rage that is unquestioning in its self-righteousness." And it was Madame de Montreuil who unstintingly worked to keep the Marquis imprisoned for over thirteen years, freedom coming only with the fall of the Bastille in 1789, when the Marquis was forty-nine years old.
Gray deftly uses correspondence and other contemporary historical documents to illuminate de Sade's life, including his prominent involvement as "Citizen Louis Sade" in the Revolutionary government of France, his role in saving his hated mother-in-law from the guillotine in 1793, and his subsequent incarceration in the Charenton asylum from 1799 until his death in 1814, where he carried on as an author and director of numerous theatrical productions staged by the inmates of the asylum and by professional actors. Gray also puts de Sade's early life and sexual excesses in context, showing how his actions, while transgressive and freely chosen, were also the product of a society and an upbringing which allowed libertinism to flourish among the pre-Revolutionary French nobility and clergy. Finally, Gray provides illuminating, albeit brief, discussions of de Sade's literary works, putting his writings in historical context and showing that the excesses of the man's life did not attain the excesses of his imagination.
"At Home With the Marquis de Sade" is, in short, a carefully researched, lucidly written life of the historical figure who has come to symbolize sexual transgression, a biography that eludes the imprisonment of culturally fixed meanings to get at the real life behind the "Sadist".

Uncle Zeke comes to live with Tapiwa's family in Zimbabwe in this impressive first book; in a starred review, PW praised Farmer for her "astute ear for dialogue, deft hand with plot twists and keen dry wit." Ages 8-12.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-- When Uncle Zeka comes to live with nine-year-old Tapiwa's middle-class family in Harare, Zimbabwe, he regales the child with stories of prospecting for gold and living by his wits and his knowledge of nature. Unfortunately, his activities in his new home lead to mishaps, as he eats poisoned caterpillars, sets the grass on fire, and unleashes a swarm of bees. His exploits amuse and sometimes embarrass Tapiwa, but his self-confidence and his devotion to her help her to stand up for herself at school. Other family members also learn humility and understanding as they come to terms with their village relative. Universal themes such as the differences between country and city, between traditional and modern ways, and among the social classes are central to this novel. Uncle Zeka is a variation of the trickster hero who appears frequently in the folklore of southern Africa. Humor is used effectively, with the illustrations reinforcing the story at key points. The novel is not without flaws, however, the most critical being the author's reliance upon caricatures rather than full characterizations. Tapiwa's Aunt Rudo, the wife of a government minister, is the most striking example; there is nothing redeeming in this selfish, unattractive villainess. Her husband, a chronic speechmaker, is no more sympathetic, nor are any of Tapiwa's wealthy schoolmates. Readers at the lower end of the book's age range will probably enjoy Uncle Zeka and Tapiwa's struggle against the "sophisticated" bad guys in their lives, but older readers will want a more complex story. --Lyn Miller-Lachmann, Siena College Library, Loudonville, NY

From Kirkus Reviews
``Do You Know Me,'' Tapiwa silently projects, glaring at her snobbish classmates as she stalks out of the exclusive school where she's ostracized--though she's at the top of her class- -because her father is a lowly bank teller. The words underline the serious theme of this farcical look at a clash between cultures: middle-class Zimbabwe (where Tapiwa's family lives simply, even though her aunt's husband is ``Minister of Progress'') and the traditions of Father's brother Zeka (who moves in with them after ``bandits'' destroy his village in Mozambique). Endowed with native wit and skills appropriate to a primitive life--though less well equipped with common sense--the entrancing Uncle Zeka wins Tapiwa's cooperation in his disastrous schemes and keeps the loyal affection of her increasingly beleaguered parents through a series of outrageous, embarrassing, sometimes life-threatening mishaps. He almost drowns Tapiwa when she tries to teach him to swim; the swarming bees he's trapped threaten the neighborhood; he doesn't know how to drive, but borrows snooty Aunt Rudo's Mercedes (without permission) and wrecks it. Indeed, he doesn't fit in; and if the conclusion--he gets a job at a research center that values his knowledge of traditional medicine--is overly tidy, it's also a telling comment. Like Jerry Segal's The Place Where Nobody Stopped (1991), an exaggerated, splendidly comical tale enriched by profound undertones. Jackson makes a fine debut with lively full- page drawings reflecting both the humor and the subtler implications. Pronouncing glossary. (Fiction. 8-12) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Do You Know Me?
By a teacher
The story, Do You Know Me?, takes place in Africa where one brother living in a more modern community tries to help his older brother who has had to survive in the bush with only his wits to help him. Their ways of doing things clash and that's when the fun begins. Uncle Zeka and his antics had me laughing out loud! The characters in this story are ones you'll never forget. My favorite, Tapiwa, is a shy, intelligent girl who learns that the most valuable lessons are not always learned at school. This is an excellent book to read with your class, teachers!

Warm-hearted and funny
By Tokoloshi
This story is about the visit of Uncle Zeka, who normally lives deep in the Zimbabwean bush, to his straight-laced relatives in town, including his niece Tapiwa. He causes chaos-as a result of doing things like constructing a trap for wild pigs in the garden and driving a car when he doesn't know how--but his warmth and spontaneity enchant Tapiwa, who quickly becomes embroiled in his adventures . The story is very funny and sparkles with inventive touches. Never a dull moment!

A Review from the St. John's Haunted Hike
By Dale Jarvis
First of all, I must admit that I am a bit biased in this review, as I was fortunate enough to be a contributor of the stories for the Newfoundland Canada section of the book. Having said that, I do feel that this is a very useful, well laid out and presented guide to hauntings from around the world. Some of the reports could do with more detail, but the strength of this book is in its attempt to have an incredibly wide variety of accounts from all over the world. I would definately recommend it to those interested in ghost stories, and as well to the armchair traveller!

Everything I like about Hauck's writing
By Kate E. Jones
I love reading about ghostly accounts in books of this format. It is organized, well-written, and interesting. I read, then re-read, then re-re-read Hauck's American version Haunted Places, and when I found this international version, I was thrilled!

Like the American version, is is geographically organized by province/county and town. Such a format lends professionalism and credence to the accounts within, because it reads more like a straightforward historical account rather than a "Halloween slumber party story" that is made-up (and purely for shock). Many stories are absolutely chilling, while others are interesting, amusing, thoughtful, or bizarre. Hauck truly writes well and it is great that he is genuinely interested in this field, because his passion comes through in the pages. Such interest inevitably rubs off on the reader, and I didn't put this book down for a few days after it arrived in the mail. There are photos of ghosts/energy as well as some pictures of the sites, some of which are exceptionally creepy and lend a whole new layer of spooky to an already-spooky tale.

If you tend to like reading about strange castles, haunted hotels, long-dead specters and ghostly abodes, this is a great example of such a book.

Planning a vacation? A must-read for paranormal enthusiasts
By Aisling D.
Paranormal research is easier when you know where to look. This guide provides a great starting point. While several of the reports are based more on folklore than fact, they're still valid when you're looking for historic places to explore... with a chance of encountering something paranormal.

This book isn't just about ghosts and hauntings. It includes other paranormal phenomena, and one person's alien sighting may turn out to be another person's ghosts, or vice versa.

Hauck has organized this book so it's easy to read and use for research, and for travel.

Check related books by this author, as well. I own both the North American and international guides by Hauck, and though this is a thinner book than the North American one, it's tremendously useful if you're going to Europe.

Tip: Photocopy or tear out the pages that apply to your upcoming trip, for less bulk and weight when traveling. That's what I do, and that's why this the second time I've bought a copy of this book.

Excellent book for use in classroom teaching of Ancient Maya
By A Customer
I teach sixth grade and use The Corn Grows Ripe in my classroom. I teach a unit on the Ancient Mayans. This book is a great teaching tool. Not only do the students learn about the customs and family life of the Ancient Maya, but they also learn some of the Spanish language as well. We create a Spanish dictionary while reading the book. Good easy-read for all levels of readers in your classroom.

You Can Accomplish Anything
By Amazon Customer
I am a fourth grade teacher who recently read this book with my reading class. I chose it because it showed that an ordinary child was faced with a seemingly impossible challenge that he overcame with perseverance. Throughout the story, the children watched Tigre slowly take on more and more responsibilty and become successful at his tasks. Although some of the voacbulary was above them, they enjoyed watching the boy mature.

The Corn Grows Ripe
By A Customer
The Corn Grows Ripe is a great book. I like this book because it relates to my life. It's a foreign, modern day-book written in English. The author gave me the idea of how the people lived with their country, religion, and cultures. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes to learn about foreign cultures. Strange Sisters: The Art of Lesbian Pulp Fiction 1949-1969, by Jaye Zimet

A vivid, sexy, and titillating journey into the steamy underworld of the dime novel.

In the scandalous world of pulp fiction in the 1950s and into the 60s, detectives, gangsters, and mad doctors were joined on the racks by bad girls, dissolute youths, drug-crazed beatniks, and other assorted miscreants and misfits. Where romance met with soft porn there was also a surprisingly large population of butch brunettes pursuing and seducing blond femmes. This was an alternate universe of erotic pulp fiction where gals and dolls were exploring the illicit pleasures of lesbian love--much to the delight of a largely male, heterosexual readership. Before the sexual revolution of the 1960s, these books offered a thrilling peek into the deviant underworld of wild passion and scandalous sex.

Strange Sisters is a collection of the cover art of these wildly wicked novels. The women who writhe across the covers of books such as Strange Lust ("She Wanted a Woman--Then She Met Another Woman Obsessed by the Same Burning Hunger") and Women's Barracks ("The Frank Autobiography of a French Girl Soldier") sizzle with sexual energy and freedom--in a high-camp defiance of the prudish, conservative 1950s. Bold, kitschy-colorful, and fraught with sexual tension, the covers of Strange Sisters are a siren call to the retro-groovin' man, or woman, in your life.

Amazon.com Review
Do you walk alone, a twilight lover? Odd one out? Warped? Troubled? Twisted? Jaye Zimet, a Brooklyn book designer and collector, has filled Strange Sisters with over 200 sleazily appealing book covers from the boom years of the lesbian pulp novel, arranging them in groups from "Positive Portraits" and more ambitious "Cliterature" to "Psycho-Babble" and an entire section devoted to cleavage. Although large numbers of their original readers in the '50s and '60s were lesbians or protolesbians hoping for a glimpse of themselves or for some tenuous connection to an almost mythical community of "unnatural lovers," the covers of these books were clearly targeted to a primary audience of furtive young men. Scantily clad, buxom blondes simper under the gaze of older, "experienced" brunettes sometimes wearing trousers or short hair but never without lipstick. To the eye of Ann Bannon and her contemporaries, these women seemed as "straight as a pine tree." But "despite the almost comical distance between the covers and the contents," Bannon concludes in her foreword, "the books found both their intended audiences.... If there was a solitary woman on the cover, provocatively dressed, and the title conveyed her rejection by society or her self-loathing, it was a lesbian book." --Regina Marler

Cleavage! Cleavage! Cleavage!
By Lesbian Reader
The 50s and 60s strapped women into undergear that created cleavage only since surpassed by Xena. This collection features covers from lesbian pulp fiction of that era and the cleavage is eye-popping! It's delightful to thumb through, a real blast from the past to read.
Aside from the cover art is the copy from the covers. Phrases like "The Savage Novel of a Lesbian on the Loose" and "Blunt revelations of what happens when deviate women seek advancement in the business world" and "His new girl-wife was a vibrant, virgin beauty...and a sensual, shrewd, licentious lesbian!"
Then there's the pure trash ... titles like "Satan was a lesbian" and "Man Hater" with covers so campy they made me laugh. All in all, this a really fun book and quite a conversation piece!

A marvelous collection of scandalous cover art
By Michael J. Mazza
I was really intrigued by "Strange Sisters: The Art of Lesbian Pulp Fiction 1949-1969," by Jaye Zimet. The book also features a foreword by writer Ann Bannon. The book is basically a collection of full color reproductions of the cover art of lesbian-themed books.
Pictured is the art from books with titles like "Women's Barracks," "Women in Prison," "Reform School Girls," "Warped Women," and "By Love Depraved." There is a gallery of art from Bannon's historically significant books, as well as a gallery of covers from different editions of "The Well of Loneliness" (the mother of all lesbian novels). The cover art is often titillating, often outrageous; there are occasional hints of violence and some really poignant images. A fascinating historical collection of images of lesbianism in popular culture.

Great book on Lesbiana Paperback Art.
By A Customer
The collecting of vintage Lesbiana paperbacks has boomed recently. Strange Sisters is a compilation of the cover art work from these paperbacks from Jaye Zimet's collection. The covers are beautifully reproduced with a brief blurb about the artist. It is a great book visually but lacks scholarship. The forward by Ann Bannon is the only part of the book that adds to our knowledge about the creation and importance of this genre. More bibliographic information and an overview of the importance of lesbiana paperbacks in lesbian literature would have made this book something more than a piece of eye candy. It is still great fun and a must for any paperback collector. You can also see an article about this book in Details magazine.

About the Author
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.

After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.

Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

My favorite book from childhood.
By Thomas Leonard Niehans
I first read "James and the Giant Peach" when I was 9 years old (I am 14 now), and reread it so many times that I actually know the story by heart! This book is funny, exciting and makes me use my imagination.

The story: After his parents are eaten by a rhinoceros (I would've made a tiger eat them instead, since in real life rhinos don't eat meat!), young James Henry Trotter has to go live with his two mean aunts named Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, who treat him very very badly. Poor James has to live with his aunts for three whole years until one day a mysterious man gives him a bag of magic things. (He tells him they are crocodile tongues.) James is so excited that he starts running back to the house, but when he is underneath an old peach tree in the garden he accidentally slips and spills all the tiny little things and they dig themselves into the roots of the tree.
Suddenly a peach appears on the very tip of the tree and then starts to grow and grow and doesn't stop until it is as big as a house! The aunts are so excited about this that instead of immediately eating pieces off the peach they start charging people to see the peach. After everyone has left they force James to pick up all the litter that the people left behind. Poor James is left all alone in the dark! For no particular reason, James walks up to the peach and starts touching it. He notices that there is a rather large hole in the peach. He crawls in, and the hole becomes a tunnel. He keeps on crawling until he reaches the center of the peach. He meets seven oversized insects who turn out to have swallowed some of the tiny little things that James had spilled. When the stem snips off (with some help, of course), the peach rolls off and the eight travellers embark on the adventure of a lifetime!

Roald Dahl was my favorite childhood author; I have read most of his children's books, and this is my personal favorite.

I recommend this book to anyone between the ages of 7 and 12.

This is a great book for children from 4 to 10. I am way past that age but I still enjoyed it. Dahl's style of writing is excellent and the story is quite simple and interesting. All in all, an excellent book and I would recommend anyone with children to buy it.

A Book Full of Imagination
By kristen
I am a tutor for a young child. I recently read this book to a child who doesn't like to read, and he could not put this book down. From a child's perspective, he found the book easy to read. He said the words jumped off the page giving him images in his mind. He loved the adventure and even put himself in the book as James. He pretended to be on the adventure and enjoyed every page. This book can jump start any child's interest to read. This book installs creativity and a fun love to read in a child.

Review

“Kafka’s survey of the insectile situation of young Jews in inner Bohemia can hardly be improved upon: ‘With their posterior legs they were still glued to their father’s Jewishness and with their wavering anterior legs they found no new ground.’ There is a sense in which Kafka’s Jewish question (‘What have I in common with Jews?’) has become everybody’s question, Jewish alienation the template for all our doubts. What is Muslimness? What is femaleness? What is Polishness? These days we all find our anterior legs flailing before us. We’re all insects, all Ungeziefer, now.”
—Zadie Smith

“Kafka engaged in no technical experiments whatsoever; without in any way changing the German language, he stripped it of its involved constructions until it became clear and simple, like everyday speech purified of slang and negligence. The common experience of Kafka’s readers is one of general and vague fascination, even in stories they fail to understand, a precise recollection of strange and seemingly absurd images and descriptions—until one day the hidden meaning reveals itself to them with the sudden evidence of a truth simple and incontestable.”
—Hannah Arendt

From the Inside Flap
With the opening sentence of The Metamorphosis Franz Kafka introduced modern man to his interior condition. After awaking to discover he has been transformed into an enormous insect, Gregor Samsa becomes an object of disgrace to his family and is left to hide away within the confines of his room. An imaginative parable about human alienation, The Metamorphosis is also an absurdly comic tale whose narrative effects remain revolutionary today.

Kafka's profound and humorous exploration of alienation and authority is found in the other fictional pieces he published during his lifetime, all collected in this edition. Included are Meditation, a group of Kafka's early studies; "The Judgement", his most powerful statement on the father-son conflict; "The Stoker", the first chapter of the unfinished novel Amerika; "In the Penal Colony", perhaps Kafka's most disturbing piece; A Country Doctor, tales written just before he contracted tuberculosis; the story "The Coal-Scuttle Rider"; and A Fasting-Artist, Kafka's final collection of stories, published just before his death. Together, these works reveal the breadth of Kafka's literary vision and the extraordinary imaginative depth of his thought.

About the Author
Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was born of Jewish parents in Prague. Several of his story collections were published in his lifetime and his novels, The Trial, The Castle, and Amerika, were published posthumously by his editor Max Brod.

Fascinated in fear and anxiety
By Shalom Freedman
Three of these stories , " The Metamorphosis ' ' The Penal Colony' ' The Country Doctor' are among the most Kafkaesque of Kafka's stories. They awaken in the reader a vague anxiety, a confusion, a sense of disturbance it is difficult to adequately describe. They give us a sense of life as something more menacing and threatening than we had imagined. And yet they do this with such a precise and even beautiful description of inner and outer reality so as to fascinate us completely. They hold us as their narratives procede in their own incredible ways to an ending which too is forever vague and unclear.

Kafka makes the human soul a startling juxtaposition of anxiety and beauty- in a destiny lost and unclear.
