Fascinating glimpse into late 18th C. American life.
By Darren Wiseman (dwiseman@earthlink.net)
These original essay length letters composed by an intelligent and imaginative immigrant offer us a fascinating glimpse into life in early America. The letters chronicle his travels across the thirteen colonies in the years leading up to the revolution. With pathos and humour he gives us an intimate look at family life in the whaling ports of Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard. We visit with John Bertram, the celebrated botanist on his Pennsylvania farm. We are escorted through the middle colonies to Charelston for a first hand look at the opulent lifestyle of the planters. Our guide points out the absurdities he confronts while chronicling the beauty and diversity of the natural landscape. This book provides a wonderful and historic experience.

Through a mirror...
By An English Gardener
What can I say? My first glimpse of this fascinating mirror into ordinary colonial American life was while I was bartending at a fancy schmancy restaurant on the upper east side of New York City. A customer working on her disertation for her master's in education was reading it while sipping chardonnay and waiting for her husband to join her.

As I passed back and forth, I could not help catching intriguing glimpses of the cover. How, in my quest for knowledge of early American agrarian, culture had I missed this gem? How would the observations of a Franch man compare to those of the incomparable William Cobbett?

Her husband was late; she had a second - and a third - glass. Her concentration became a bit wobbly and the book, to my great delight, was finally laid upon the bar, the well worn pages held open with the aid of a handy bread stick, flakes of toasted parmesan cheese adding a bit of superfluous punctuation.

I can read upside down (most bartenders can; do not forget this for your future privacy). I had got through several pages on dealing with the manners and customs of Nantucket before her spouse, unfortunatly, arrived. I had been too busy to write down the title at the time (yes, I can read upside down very quickly and in short, accurate bursts). But, thanks to the infinite ways of searching on Amazon, I was soon able to discover the whole title.

For those who, like myself, peer through the mirror of history and see ourselves; perhaps our little garden, or spring seedlings, tenderly nurtured, this book is better than any reality show pitting modern man against antiquated inconveniences. It relays the security and the continuity of a job well known and well done.

Buy this book. Read this book. You will never again view a plastic wrapped loaf of bread in the same light.

Hey there little red riding hood
By E. R. Bird
I once asked a children's literature listserv to name the best children's books that they felt had gone unappreciated by the public at large. A wonderful range of different names and titles were spouted and amongst them was the book, "Children of the Wolf". After reading through it, I'm happy (and sad, I suppose) to say that the person suggesting it was correct in their assessment of the novella. It is both really quite good and really quite forgotten. For all you Jane Yolen fans out there, I highly recommend you give a glance to "Children of the Wolf". For all you fans of well-written children's literature, ditto.

We find ourselves in India in the early 20th century. Our hero, Mohandas, is a child of an orphanage run by kindly British missionaries. After the Rev. Welles is asked by a superstitious member of a nearby village to rid the land of an evil ghost, Mohandas takes a trip with some men to find out what all the fuss is about. The group discovers that rather than spirits of the dead, two feral girls raised by wolves have been roaming the land. In an act of supposed Christian charity, Mr. Welles takes the girls back to his orphanage and places Mohandas in charge of their education and upbringing. What Mohandas and his friends are soon to find is that while it may be easy to take the girls out of the forest, it is far less easy to take the forest out of the girls.

The story is somewhat like "The Jungle Book" rendered slightly more realistic. There are no talking animals here and unlike Mowgli these girls are thoroughly wild. Their very bodies have adapted to their environments and they seem incapable of undergoing "civilizing" influences. Basing her story on a "true" discovery of two such girls in October of 1920, Yolen points out that this is not meant to be a factual tale necessarily. Rather, she prefers (quoting Emily Dickinson) to, "dwell in possibility". It does not matter if the reported "facts" of the case are true or not. What matters is the story Yolen is able to weave out of such a tale.
And weave she does. It is unfortunate that the book is as sparse as it is. Written at a scant 136 pages, you get a very clear idea of the girls and the narrator but not much of a fleshing out of anyone else. I would have liked to have known more about the other children in the orphanage, kids prone to cruelty at a drop of the hat. I would have liked to have learned about the missionaries that ran the orphanage and what their story was. But the author has focused her attention very narrrowly on the here and the now. The story is not necessarily a happy one, but it is an interesting one and it is written well. For those readers that enjoyed, "The Jungle Book", (and I know they exist), further tales of children unbound by rules or "civilized" society can be very intriguing indeed. It's a rousing good story. I recommend you take a gander if you think it might be your cup of tea.

The book was very fascinating because of the fascinating true story that the story is based off of ( In the back of the book is the true story). To me it makes the story five times as better than just reading the story.

Wonderful Read
By S. Todd Strader
This was a wonderful read. Jane Yolen relates the events of a true life story through the mind and heart of a boy who was not, but might have been,a part of it. In Children of the Wolf we meet a child becoming a man who's only care seems to a preoccupation with himself, a girl, motivated by jealousy, who encapsulates the cruelty for which we are all capable, Mr. Wells, the missionary, who while knowledgeable and well intention-ed is more focused on the usefulness of souls in garnering attention and funding than on truly knowing them and then there is the narrator, the a fore mentioned young boy, the voice of reason and heart who, in living this tale, finds his voice.

The book is well paced with short chapters. I could not put it down. The language is laced with a deep knowledge of turn of the century India (not this last one, the one prior)that absolutely places you in place and time with out being obtrusive. The story is engrossing and the characters well developed and engaging. In addition to those already mentioned, there are, of course, the two girls, the children of the wolf, from the title. Yolen does not hold back. Her descriptions are gritty and authentic. Their ordeal evokes hope and sorrow. I wish this were a heart warming tale but it cannot be. It is, after all, based on a real episode that simply does not end well. It is more heart rending than heart warming and, in as much, it is very trans-formative for our young narrator.

Review
The Puffin Classic series is the perfect way of reading the old and the new - and loving both Lovereading4Kids

About the Author
Roger Lancelyn Green was born in 1918 and lived in Oxford and at his family home in Cheshire, which the Greens had owned for more than 900 years. He loved storytelling and was fascinated by traditional fairy tales, myths and legends from around the world. He was a professional actor, a librarian and a teacher. His retellings include Egyptian, Greek and Norse legends, plus a retelling of Robin Hood. He also wrote many books for adults, including a biography of his friend C. S. Lewis, creator of the The Chronicles of Narnia. Roger Lancelyn Green died in 1987.

From AudioFile
While by no means the most scholarly collection of Greek myths and legends, Roger Lancelyn Green's retellings are among the most accessible, particularly to younger listeners, while retaining the poetic quality of the ancient texts. TALES OF THE GREEK HEROES recounts the origins of the Greek pantheon, the adventures of Perseus, the seven labors of Heracles, and the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts. Edward Lewis reads with a clean precision, but some listeners may find his style stiff and pedantic. S.E.S. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Wonderful rendering by a true master of literature
By Amazon Customer
Roger Lancelyn Green was a true expert of classic literature and ancient mythology. Green was also good friends with C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Lewis's stepson Douglas Gresham (who recently co-produced the Disney production of THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE). So, Roger Lancelyn Green ran in literary circles.

Furthermore, Roger Lancelyn Green thoroughly studied all the ancient mythologies from around the world. He knew them inside and out. But unlike most other like-minded scholars, Green chose to bring these stories home for children. Such he has done with Norse mythology, Egyptian mythology, Robin Hood, Arthurian legend, and of course, Greek mythology.

Green's book TALES OF THE GREEK HEROES is nothing short of exciting and fun to read. It's simple enough that a child can understand it and complex enough that an adult reader will not be bored by it. In it are such exciting stories as the adventures of Perseus the Gorgon-slayer (also depicted in the 1981 film CLASH OF THE TITANS) and all the labors of Hercules (or Heracles). The book concludes with the fall of Troy, which gives way to Green's two follow-up books THE TALE OF TROY and THE LUCK OF TROY.

I also highly recommend Roger Lancelyn Green's KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE.

Excellent Retellings
By Heather E. Hejduk
Tales of the Greek Heroes weaves together stories of ancient Greek heroes from the beginning to Troy. The stories are similar to any other retelling, but the book manages to make them more of a cohesive unit with one story relating to and leading to the next. These retellings are excellent and I highly recommend reading them to people of all ages!

Well done!
By just.a.reader
Groger Lancelyn Green retells the stories of the ancient Greek Heroes in a way that lends detail and continuity to those stories we have all heard. I had several "oh...that is how it hooks together" moments while reading.

The actual reading level is probably appropriate for a 5th-6th grader, but the style and story-telling will grasp the attention of an older reader. This book would also be a fabulous "read-aloud" for a younger audience with interest in the Greek Heroes.

Roger Green is obviously passionate about this subject and his passion shines through and grabs the reader. This is one the better books I have ever read about the ancient Greek heroes.

Before the Wind: The Memoir of an American Sea Captain, 1808-1833, by Charles Tyng

Charles Tyng's quarter century under sail took him around the world half a dozen times at the begining of the nineteenth century. Fortunately, he proved to be as natural a storyteller as he was a sailor. Before the Wind has been hailed as a superb contribution to seafaring literature, alongside such books as Two Years Before the Mast and the novels of Patrick O'Brian. Both Tyng's life and the way he recounts his years at sea are full of wonder: He survives shipwrecks, squalls, and pirates. He makes and loses fortunes in tea, sugar, and cotton. He meets Lord Byron as well as the British princess (later queen) Victoria. Sailors, armchair travelers, history buffs, and lovers of pulse-quickening maritime stories will find this book as seductive as the siren song of the sea.

From Publishers Weekly
What's not to like in a narrative that features pirates, rude seamen and exotic ports? Tyng (1801-1879), who rose from cabin boy to captain and prosperous merchant, wrote this account of his early sailing days in later life. In 1996, this memoir was found by his great-great-granddaughter, Susan Fels, who edited the 419-page handwritten manuscript. An unruly boy sent to live in various homes by his rather forbidding father, Tyng first shipped on a merchant vessel at the age of 13. He hated it. But he loved his second voyage and soon became one of the youngest captains in the American merchant fleet. As Tyng tells of voyages around the world carrying cargoes of bullion, tea, linseed oil, molasses and other items to Holland, China, Cuba and other destinations, he writes with understatement, modesty and a deadpan humor that might or might not be intentional. Consider this description of an aborted mutiny: "The cook who was standing near the cambose with an iron ladle in his hand... struck Williams a stunning blow with the ladle which put him down." Of Havana's dangerous streets, he writes: "There were placed along the back of the Palace, a row of wooden benches, for the deposit of bodies of those who had been assassinated in the night and picked up in the morning, that their friends might find them." Tyng's voyages frequently struck a tangent to history: he met Lord Byron in Italy, was intercepted by a British man of war guarding the imprisoned Napoleon at St. Helena and saw the first Atlantic steamship. His collection of salty anecdotes will make a pleasing diversion for fans of Patrick O'Brian.

From Library Journal
When Tyng (1801-79), not quite 14 years old, embarked from Boston as a "sailor boy" on the merchant ship Cordelia for a year-and-a-half voyage around the world to China and back, it was an event that shaped an incipient "black sheep" into an enterprising and determined young man who became a successful captain and ship owner in the tea and sugar trade. His memoirsAonly recently discovered and edited by great-great-granddaughter Fels, an editor in Washington, DCAcompare favorably with Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast (1840). Tyng describes his unhappy childhood, recalls the varied ups and downs of his maritime trading experiences, and gives sharply detailed accounts of storms, shipwrecks, mutinies, and other near-death adventures at sea. His distinctive voice, at once dramatic, informative, and intensely personal, re-creates the world of the early 19th century in a true-life account that C.S. Forester or Patrick O'Brian would find difficult to match. Recommended for all public libraries.ARobert C. Jones, formerly with Central Missouri State Univ., Warrensburg

From Booklist
This never-before-published time capsule of U.S. maritime history is also a remarkable reminiscence, penned when Tyng was in his 70s. In a businesslike tone, he traces his rise from deckhand to shipowner in the Boston area; he remembered exactly his wages, profits on cargoes, and purchase prices of ships. But to contemporary eyes, this is no business memoir but an exotic travelogue through the maritime world of the 1820s. It was terribly dangerous, from ordinary perils, such as being tossed overboard or shipwrecked, to encounters with pirates and vigilance against mutineers. The post-Napoleonic world presented such sights to Tyng as the ships of Trafalgar deteriorating at their docks; a frigate guarding old Boney himself at St. Helena; the first trans-Atlantic steamship, the Savannah; a half hour's badinage with Lord Byron; gunfire at Marseilles heralding the July 1830 revolution; and the South Carolina fire-eaters in the 1832 nullification crisis. Such Gump-like novelties brighten the intrinsic color this adventure holds for maritime buffs. Gilbert Taylor

Excellent Snapshot of a Forgotten Way of Life
By Joseph T. Reeves
In the early days of American history, the merchant trade was the predominant occupation on the Eastern Seaboard. Charles Tyng's memoir, "Before the Wind," captures that life in a way histories written today never can. Tyng lived a colorful, adventurous life, and had the ability to record it in a fresh and vivid style. Tyng's early life reads like a combination of Charles Dickens and Horatio Alger. The son of an affluent but no-nonsense father, Tyng was farmed out to various relatives and school headmasters until his father sent him to sea, hoping to cure his son's self-confessed rebellious streak, and to teach him a trade. Although this sounds rather severe, it was far from uncommon, especially in large families such as Tyng's to apprentice or force children to seek their way at a very early age.
Once at sea, Tyng experienced a variety of hardships at the hands of sadistic shipmates who seemed to have no regard for a boy's safety or well-being. However, his early experiences at sea energized Tyng's dormant ambition to rise above the position of sailor and become a ship's officer. The memoir contains recollections of Tyng's studies, trips, and early efforts at trading on a small scale. Eventually Tyng rose through the ranks to become a ship's officer, captain, and eventually the owner of two ships. His memoir is filled with recollections of entrepreneurial deals, mutinies, and pirates. It is also filled with the day-to-day details of life aboard a merchant vessel. In a more general sense, it is also filled with the routine, but now forgotten, details of life in the early 19th century. One notable quality of this memoir is how Tyng's tone actually changes from that of an overwhelmed and somewhat unruly "ship's boy" to a mature, ambitious, and self-assured ship's captain and merchant. This change and growth in character seems natural and unforced, which lends a greater air of credibility to this book.
Tyng's story is typical of many New England boys who turned to the sea and the merchant trade to make their fortune. In his case, Tyng actually succeeded at both his chosen trade and in his ability to recount a life once common, but now forgotten. Highly recommended.

An interesting account of merchant service on tall ships
By Fred Camfield
I came across a reference to this book when checking the book reviews of another amazon.com reviewer. It is an autobiography of Captain Charles Tyng, covering the early part of his life and, in particular, his career in as a merchant mariner from the time he was 13 to the time he was 31. It was taken from a hand written manuscript which he wrote 45 years after the last event detailed, and not published until 120 years after his death after being found by one of his descendents. He started as a ship's boy, shortly after the end of the War of 1812 on a voyage to Canton, China; rapidly rose to a ship's captain by his own initiative, family connections, and matters of chance; and established his early fortune by the private trading allowed to ships' captains, trading in things as exotic as live monkeys, parrots, bird nests, and other commodities. He had an eye for potential profit. The book details the harsh life of merchant sailors, with miserly ship owners often giving them insufficient food and low pay (if they did not try to steal even that), and bad treatment from some sadistic ships' officers. Captain Tyng managed to become a ship owner at an early age, and was a successful merchant brokering cargo by the time he was 31 (the ending point of the tale). The last chapter covers a conflict in Charleston, SC, between the State and the Federal Government about 30 years before the Civil War when South Carolina passed the Nullification Act, refusing to pay duties on imported goods, and President Jackson sent a frigate to Charleston to enforce the customs and General Scott to restore order in the city. The book is the manuscript pretty much as written and has a few flaws as a novel, e.g., excessive repetition of the phrase, "I can't remember his name," some repetition of descriptions, and a lot of short digressions. It is an interesting historical account providing details of the U.S. merchant service during the early 19th century including shipwrecks, pirates, mutinies, connivery, etc., as well as extensive details of the merchantile business of that era when it was possible to make large profits on a well placed investment. There are some side details such as the U.S. and British business of smuggling opium into China.

A Treasury of Royal Scandals: The Shocking True Stories History's Wickedest, Weirdest, Most Wanton Kings, Queens, Tsars, Popes, and Emperor

From Nero's nagging mother (whom he found especially annoying after taking her as his lover) to Catherine's stable of studs (not of the equine variety), here is a wickedly delightful look at the most scandalous royal doings you never learned about in history class.

Gleeful, naughty, sometimes perverted-like so many of the crowned heads themselves-A Treasury of Royal Scandals presents the best (the worst?) of royal misbehavior through the ages. From ancient Rome to Edwardian England, from the lavish rooms of Versailles to the dankest corners of the Bastille, the great royals of Europe have excelled at savage parenting, deadly rivalry, pathological lust, and meeting death with the utmost indignity-or just very bad luck.

From Publishers Weekly
In another royal exposé, Farquhar, a writer at the Washington Post, duplicates some of the ground covered in Karl Shaw's Royal Babylon, such as Peter the Great's delight in administering torture (he had his son lashed to death) and the way Britain's Queen Mary cajoled her subjects into giving her their household treasures ("I am caressing it with my eyes," she would coyly coo). Written in a provocative tabloid style (with headings like "We Are Not Abused. We Are Abusive," "A Son Should Love His Mother, But..." and "All the Holiness Money Can Buy"), Farquhar publicly washes the dirty laundry of not only European royalty, but also of Roman emperors and popes. Murderers and torturers who slept with their siblings (and other relatives), the emperors of Rome excelled at corruption. The maniacal pedophile Tiberius Caesar (A.D. 14-37) left the corpses of his many victims to rot on the Gemonian Steps, which descended from the Capitol to the Forum, or alternatively enjoyed watching them being thrown from a cliff ("A contingent of soldiers was stationed below to whack them with oars and boat hooks just in case the fall failed to do the trick"). Many popes were no better. Not content with just rooting out Christian heretics by launching a bloody crusade against the Cathars in southern France, Innocent III (1160-1216) declared himself ruler of the world. He sacked Constantinople and massacred every Muslim he could find. Like Royal Babylon, this gossipy string of anecdotes is a popularized rather than an authoritative history and perfect for travel reading.

From Library Journal
Designed for lovers of the curious and bizarre, this choice collection of true stories spans more than a millennium of European history. Farquhar includes the debauchery and cruelty of Roman Emperors like Tiberius and Caligula, the lusty personal life of Catherine the Great, and a number of the depraved popes who reigned between 800 and 1200. The author's anecdotal style creates a popularized tabloid history. A Treasury of Royal Scandals is entertaining and warns against the excesses of power as narrator Johnny Heller leads the listener on a roller coaster ride.

Great fun!
By Amazonbombshell
The subject is a bit shallow, perhaps, but Farquahar's writing is hilarious and you must admit, it's fun. His stories are well researched and accurate portrayals of some shocking, dirty, horrendous, and often VERY funny escapades in the lives of prominent European rulers down through the centuries. If you're not into European history, you'll read it quickly, enjoy the ride, and accidentally learn a lot along the way. If you are, you'll love the refreshingly funny writing style and unique focus (they don't tell you THAT in textbooks!), and you'll appreciate the detailed geneologies in the front and chronologies in the back that are an inestimable help in keeping straight the tangled branches of Europe's royal family trees.

Lots of fun for royal watchers
By Catherine S. Vodrey
Michael Farquhar's "A Treasury of Royal Scandals" will delight inveterate royal watchers! As he sniffs in the introduction, he covers not the current crop of royals, as none of them have provided anything worthy of the title of "scandalous," but he goes in-depth to provide us with (as the book is subtitled) "shocking true stories of history's wickedest, weirdest, most wanton kings, queens, tsars, popes, and emperors."
Farquhar provides a handy family tree for major royal families at the beginning--it's most helpful when the scandals reach a dizzying pitch and you need to sort out which royal is plotting to overthrow/marry for money/murder which other royal. He debunks an awful lot of incorrect gossip (like the oft-told tale of Catherine the Great's predilection for beastiality) and comes up with wonderful gems of dirt that will be deliciously unfamiliar to most readers. This is not a scholarly work by any means--it's kind of like a historical PEOPLE magazine, focusing on the faux pas, the foibles, and the fevered doings of all sorts of royals throughout history. Great good fun!

I loved this book!
By Lady Bluestocking
As an avid European history buff, I enjoy reading about the "nasty little secrets" that weave in & out of history. This book certainly lived up to my expectation and more. I found it as a CD book in my local library and thoroughly enjoyed having it read to me. I had to buy the book. If you are at all familiar with European royalty in the 16th thru 20th (yes 20th! remember Edward the 8th and Wallis Simpson?) centuries then you will enjoy this book. I discovered that even though I was aware of the scandals covering about 3/4ths of this book, it was genuinely enjoyable to listen and then read about them in such a light and comical style.

Great Expectations (Puffin Classics), by Charles Dickens

The engrossing epic of murder, mysteries and an orphan boy's promise of wealth. As a small boy at Joe Gargery's forge, Pip meets two people who will affect his whole life - an escaped convict he is forced to help, and the eccentric Miss Havisham, whose beautiful, cold ward Estella young Pip adores. But when a secret benefactor pays for him to go to London to become a gentleman, Pip never dreams he will meet the dreadful Magwitch again, nor just how wrong his expectations are.

@piMp The walk was a bad idea. I met a prisoner who demanded bread and a file. He looks like a pederast. And a murderer. Amber alert?

About the Author

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors’ prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and “slave” factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years’ formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

One of the Best Books ever Written
By A Customer
I first read this book when I was in eighth grade. Ever since then, I have been going back to it because even though I know how the events will eventually turn out, this book always retains the magic touch to entertain and keep one hoping that the main character Pip will live a happy life.
Upon reading the first page, the reader is drawn into a world of mystery and suspense. The reader is whisked into an English cemetry from olden times and what draws the reader further is the presence of a little boy crying, afraid of the eerie atmosphere. To make matters worse, a very strange looking man appears to frighten the little boy even further. The suspense just begins.
As if this wasn't enough for the little boy crying in the cemetry, Pip goes on to face even more difficulties in life. Pip meets with the strange Miss Havisham who forever wears her white wedding gownn. Pip feels forever alienated by the proud Estella, whom he has fallen in love with. The problem is --- Estella doesn't seem to care at all. To her, Pip is a poor, common boy.
Excitement builds up as Pip is granted the chance to become a gentleman with prosperity. Will Estella care about him now? Will Pip remain the same kind-hearted young man he was when he was poor or will he change?
Even though I have long found the "answers" (there are two different endings in the orginal) I am still amazed at how Dickens creates fascinating characters and fills his novels with mystery, suspense and romance.

One of the Greatest Coming of Age Stories Ever Told.
By John A.
I read this book in high school and loved it! Charles Dickens is one of my favorite authors of all time next to Sparks, Crichton, Irving, Brewer, and Bradbury. The story follows the inheritance into wealth of a fourteen year-old in 18th century England. Told with detail, finesse and a mystery that will keep you hooked, don't miss out on this first rate literary experience.
The young orphaned Pip, the sensual Estella: the boy's love interest, the enigmatic and vengeful Miss Havisham in her bridal wear. These are images you will never forget. Pick up a copy (unabridged if you can) and loose yourself in this carefully and masterfully wroght world.
I also recommend John Irving's works, mainstream fiction, and Dandilion Wine by Ray Bradbury. Also look for the edition with the forward by Irving and the original ending.
Check them out and buy while prices are cheap!

Overview of the life of Rachel Carson
By R S Cobblestone
Rachel Carson did not have an easy life. She had continuous health problems, tried to become a practicing marine scientist when all others in the profession were men, and struggled to support her family. She persevered, however, and eventually she became a successful author and spokeswoman for the ocean. We remember her today for her work on the book, Silent Spring. Silent Spring changed a nation's environmental policies, and she defended her book's conclusions as she was battling cancer.

This chapter book, Rachel Carson: Pioneer of Ecology, by Kathleen Kudlinski, is an abbreviated overview of the life and times of Rachel Carson, written for readers aged 7-11.
