For Lust Of Knowing: The Orientalists And Their Enemies, by Robert Irwin

Robert Irwin’s history of Orientalism leads from Ancient Greece to the present. He shows that, whether making philological comparisons between Arabic and Hebrew, cataloguing the coins of Fatimid Egypt or establishing the basic chronology of Harun al-Rashid’s military campaigns against Byzantium, scholars have been unified not by politics or ideology but by their shared obsession. For Lust of Knowing is an extraordinary, passionate book, both a sustained argument and a brilliant work of original scholarship.

The entertaining confusion
By Martyn A. Oliver
Irwin's book, like Said's Orientalism, and like the other reviews of Irwin's book all suffer from the same problem--a confused sense of purpose. Are we to bash Arabs? Zionists? Orientalists? Imperialists? Muslims? The French? (yes, the french!)

Irwin's book--a fun read blessed with an English sense of wit, style, and flippancy--awkwardly combines (the awkwardness being Irwin's fault, as these topics do belong together) three topics: a history of the the study of the Orient, a critique of Said's critique of the study of the (so-called) Orient, and a plea for the reinvigoration of the study of the Orient. He succeeds admirably on the first, dully on the second, and, well, he does seem to plead . . .

Finer and more convincing critiques of Said's work have been done elsewhere--Irwin's consisting mainly of "gotcha" type errors (and Said is notoriously sloppy when it comes to facts). Begging for British institutions to beef up their Middle East studies programs is odd on two counts. First, the public's interest in the Mideast could hardly be higher. Second, British universities have, as Irwin himself shows, a rather lackadisical history when it comes to the study of the middle east--they do not have the same institutional dynamism that US universities do (although the Brits continue to produce very fine scholars).

What makes the book worthwhile is Irwin's account of the eccentric history of some of academia's most eccentric characters--many of whom did indeed study simply for the love of knowledge--while others were spies, some zionists, some anti-semites, some imperialists, some pacifists. Irwin's account does little to prove or disprove Said's (contentious) thesis, and would have been better off without trying to do both.

For the History Part
By KC Tang
The book contains two things: a history of Islamic scholarship in the West, and a critique of Edward Said's book "Orientalism". I'm not really interested in the latter, hence the mere four stars. I only hoped the pages for second part (one long chapter) were devoted to the first! As Irwin says in the book, the rank of Oriental scholars in the West has more than their fair share of eccentrics; and it's sheer joy to read their biographies, though short. Sir Richard Burton is only briefly mentioned (for whom you've to refer to Rice's biography), but you'll meet the good Guillaume Postel and Edward Henry Palmer. This first part of the book is especially valuable as most of the source materials are difficult to get hold of for an ordinary reader.

A Scholarly Attack
By Yuri Sobol
"For Lust of Knowing" reminds me of one of my favorite books, "The Sumerian Problem," which was one in a series of books examining scholarly controversies. The question in "The Sumerian Problem" was this: Were the first inhabitants of Mesopotamia Semites or Indo-Europeans? What followed was a chronicle of academic discourse that often degenerated into vicious personal attack.
That's why "For Lust of Knowing" reminds me of "The Sumerian Problem." "For Lust of Knowing" is a vehicle for Irwin to attack Edward Said and his book "Orientalism." Irwin sets up his prosecution very carefully with a thorough study of the West's attempts to investigate the East with a focus on Arabs and Islam. On the way, he never lets his readers completely forget that he is heading toward Said. Finally, he attacks.
For those who are not orientalists themselves, this book might not be very interesting. But having lived in the Middle East much of my life, I found this book a good read. I kept telling myself I would put the book down when I became tired of it, but Irwin manages to put something very interesting or terribly amusing in every chapter, if not on every page. So I read the whole book and quite enjoyed it.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up?Breezy, upbeat, conversational writing enlivens this book. The information is divided into three broad areas. The first section presents definitions of various kinds of vegetarianism and reasons for giving up meat. Living with the decision; defending it to family, friends, and others; and surviving in a primarily meat-eating world is the focus of the second part. The concluding section contains nutrition facts, recipes, and meal-planning suggestions. Paragraphs are short with bulleted lists and heavy use of bold type to attract readers' attention. Young people are quoted, increasing the book's appeal for its targeted audience. Attractive woodcuts appear at the beginning of each chapter. This title provides more information and has a lighter style than Charles Salter's The Vegetarian Teen (Millbrook, 1991) or Lila Perl's Eating the Vegetarian Way (Morrow, 1980; o.p.).?Lois McCulley, Wichita Falls High School, TX
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 7-12. Much more than a guide to modifying diet, this book takes pains to explain why vegetarianism is beneficial both to the individual and to the planet. Drawing on numerous resources, Krizmanic thoroughly investigates various reasons people choose not to eat meat--health benefits, ethical concerns, and environmental factors, among them--and by listing organizations and newsletters of interest, she encourages readers to become actively involved in their lifestyle choice. The first part of the book is a revealing rationale for vegetarianism (statistics aren't specifically documented, though chapter references are supplied); the second tackles how to explain your switch to your parents and friends and how to manage when eating away from home; the third is purely practical, discussing nutrition, introducing some health foods, and providing a selection of recipes. An encouraging, consciousness-raising overview that may help change the undecided or the simply curious into the fully committed. References and a glossary are appended. Stephanie Zvirin

Great Book for teen vegetarians
By A Customer
This is a great book for teen vegetarians, or teens thinking about becoming vegetarians. This book has 13 chapters, each full of information.
1. What is a vegetarian, anyways?- This gives straight forward answers, and describes different kinds of vegetarians and why people are vegetarians.
2.For The Planet- About how being a vegetarian benifits the planet.
3. For The Animals- You guessed it, all about how being a vegetarian helps animals.
4. For Your Health- About how being veggie helps you. This part also dispels many myths not-vegetarians have about a vegetarian diet.
5.Making The Switch- About going from meat-eater to vegetarian.
6.What will your parents say?- I think this is one of the best chapters, as it gives lots of information about what parents may be thinking and how to convince them without being rebelious.
7. What will your fiends say?- Yet another concern to teens, this chapter deals with dealing with friends.
8. Sticky Situations- This is another great chapter for teens, that answers all those nagging questions. What about at friends houses? How about when I'm traveling?
9. Surviving at School- All about cafeteria blues, science class diesection, and ways to make changes in your school.
10. Some Nutrition Basics- Another great chapter. All the nutrition you need to know, written in a clear way for teens to understand.
11. Fabulous Vegetarian Foods- All about vegetarian foods to try.
12. The Makings Of A Meal- About what to include in yummy and healthy meals.
13. Some Recipies To Get You Started- I'll be honest, I haven't tried any of the recipies yet, but they sound great. They are written in a ay great for beggining cooks.
This book is written in a non-judgmental, just facts way, but after reading it you will probably want to be vegetarian, if not vegan. I love the way the author talked to real teens, and included their quotes, knowledge, and tidbits of information about being vegetarian. This book includes a good concrete basis on all information nessecary to a teenage vegetarian, and is written in a engaging, interesting, funny, and informative way. I wish I could give this book 10 stars, it is such a great reference for the teenage vegetarian.

This book is a big help for teens.
By Allison Kalman
When I was becoming vegetarian in 6th grade, I read a lot of books, but none delt with it from the teenagers viewpoint. They discussed what to shop for and how to plan large elaborate meals, and lots of other things that were of no use to me at that time.
That's this books strong point. It is written clearly for teenagers, dealing with the issues they need to know about. It covers nutrition and the likes wonderfly, in a way that can be easily understood, but also deals with uniquely teenage concerns such as how to discuss this with your parents and how to deal with going out with friends, school meals, etc. In addition, it covers the basic reasons for become a vegetarian, and the different types of vegetarians there are. It's a great resource for any teenage considering vegetarianism.

Solid storytelling and easy vocabulary
By Redwood2Bay
Having checked out many "easy readers" from the library for my five year old, I have to say that this one is a standout. The stories are very entertaining and surprising. My daughter wanted this book read twice to her the day I borrowed it. I also appreciate that the monster which appears in two stories is not scary-- well, he scares some of the other characters initially, but he turns out to be a good guy. Highly recommended.

This book was easy to read for my first grader and she loved it. I read this book aloud to a group of 6-7 year olds at school and it really held their interest. I recommend it for beginning independent readers.

Gr 5 Up-Michael Ende's beloved fantasy (Doubleday, 1983) about a young boy who becomes a mighty hero in the story he is reading gains vibrant new life through this fantastic audio. Narrator Gerard Doyle transports listeners into the beautiful and dangerous world of Fantastica, a land filled with dragons, giants, and monsters, providing each character with a distinct voice and making the imaginative landscapes feel like tangible places. Some familiar only with the movie version (Warner Home Video, 2001) may be disheartened to learn that the well-known children's film only loosely adheres to the book on which it was based. But most will be thrilled to learn that the Neverending Story continues long after Bastian bestows the Childlike Empress with her new name. Whimsical creatures abound and exciting surprises await listeners at every turn. As with any hero's journey, an important-and hard-won-lesson must be learned before Bastian's quest can be completed. Although originally intended for young audiences, this timeless fantasy will thrill listeners of any age and continue to enchant them for generations to come. The only drawback is the audio's inconsistent volume. Overall, this epic tale has everything a fantasy enthusiast could wish for and more. A must have!-Alissa LeMerise, Oxford Public Library, MIα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Beautifully presented version of a classic book.
By Mr Ghostface
"Die Unendliche Geschichte"
Michael Ende's novel first came to my attention after I had seen the wonderful Warner Bros film in 1984. Just a teenager at the time, I sought out the book and read it. It was fantastic, a book I intended to keep for the rest of my life. But it was a yellowing, cheap paperback re-released off the back of the movie. So one day trawling through the catalogues at Amazon, it occurred to me to check out if the book was still in print. It was. And how.
When my copy arrived, I hadn't realised the effort that had been put into its print. The cover art is crisply reproduced with firm hardbacking, but the real surprise was to be found inside; the text is printed in alternating purple (for Bastian's story) and green (for the events within the storybook itself). It's one of those books you want to stick on the shelf and never touch again because you want to preserve its beauty, although well-thumbed books take on an appreciated beauty of their own. I love this book, I would've paid twice the price for it.
Hope you enjoy it as much.
NOTE: Michael Ende's novel is longer than the film, which was based only on the first half of the book. The translation is the original one by Ralph Manheim. For trivialists, Ende died in 1995, Manheim in 1992.

Fantastic!

This truly is a breath-taking book! If you've seen the movie, you'll know that this story has a variety of wonderful characters that will inspire the imaginations of those who hear it! I was a little leary when I picked it up (I'm 13)I was afraid that it would be too hard- it does carry a higher reading level, but don't let that discourage you. This book includes the entire story of the first two movies- but it's done correctly! If you hated the 2nd movie as much as I did, you'll be glad to know that this book will stir your imagination more than the original movie did! If you've never seen the movie- now's your chance to get in on the fantastic story of what happens when a young boy takes a book from a bookstore- and enters the world of Fantastica! Breathtaking work, detailed! I'm having trouble figuring out where the author got so many wonderful ideas! Take the journey to Fantastica with Bastian, Atreyu and all their friends, and you'll never regret it!
Great for children, as well as adults ages 10+ up!

The Neverending Story
By mp
Like everyone else, my remembrances of childhood contain hazy memories of Atreyu doing battle with Gmork, and a young Barrett Oliver as Bastian yelling "I will do what I dream!" So, in a mood to reaffirm my youthful fantasies, I picked up a copy of Michael Ende's 1979 novel upon which the movie was loosely based, "The Neverending Story". I was not surprised that the largely dark tone of the movie was, of course, much darker, deeper and much more sustained in the novel. But I am not here to compare the book to the movie, both of which are classics in their own right. Like the best of what is considered children's literature, "The Neverending Story" has an appeal and a depth that literally begs for continued readings as one grows older. A novel about growth, maturity, the power (fraught as it is) of imagination, and the necessity of books to provide us with different perspectives on our world, "The Neverending Story" is a challenging children's novel which respects its readers enough to not treat them like children.
"The Neverending Story" begins as Bastian Balthazar Bux, a fat little ten year old, picked on by his classmates and teachers, and ignored by his father, runs from the torments of his classmates one rainy November morning before school. Ducking into Mr. Coreander's vintage book store, Bastian suddenly finds himself in a state of mind that portends that he has come here for a reason. Following a brusque chat with Mr. Coreander, Bastian is drawn to a book the old man was perusing, titled "The Neverending Story," bearing a logo of two snakes in an ourobouros pattern. Grabbing the book and ditching school, Bastian hides in the school's attic and begins to read a book that will change his (and our) life. The book's world, Fantastica is in grave danger - a blinding force called The Nothing is slowly eating away at Fantastica - ambassadors of all Fantastican nationalities are sent to the heart of Fantastica, The Ivory Tower, to appeal to the Childlike Empress, the impartial ruler of Fantastica, only to find that she is dying. By the time the green-skinned youth, Atreyu, is sent to discover the cause of the Childlike Empress's illness, Bastian, (and the reader) are hooked.
"The Neverending Story" is a novel that deals heavily with epistemological self-discovery - Atreyu's Great Quest, and Bastian's, test the limits of physical and mental endurance. Atreyu and Bastian represent two approaches to self-knowledge - Atreyu, the Socratic questioner, and Bastian, the experimental deductive reasoner. Both have their pitfalls, but the novel does not fault these two boys for the risks they take or the execution of their schemes. Success and blame are best judged by the self in retrospect, the novel suggests, and it is only through experience (as opposed to book learning only) that we understand who we are and our places in the world and in relation to others.
Ende doesn't spend much time developing minor characters - most of the strange beings we encounter throughout "The Neverending Story" are rarely present for more than a chapter or two, but the ones who do stick around are impressive, though sometimes simultaneously distant and welcoming presences. Morla the Aged One, the gnome Engywook, and the Three Deep Thinkers illustrate the ruts we can get ourselves into when we are apathetic, or obssessive, but detached. Gmork and Xayide are our tormentors, the nay-sayers, the opportunists, the manipulators. Falkor the luckdragon, Grograman the Many-Coloured Death, the Childlike Empress, Yor, and Dame Eyola are the signposts of encouragement that we meet, especially in our childhood, but also thorughout our lives, guides who provide love, knowledge, and life experience. In short, though most of the minor characters flit in and out of the novel like symbols in dreams, each serves a purpose in the lives of Atreyu, Bastian, and the reader.
As I said earlier, this is a novel which respects the intelligence of its readers - there are long stretches of not only joyous fantasy, but also intense political and psychological trauma. Written in the late 70's in Germany, we should really pay attention to Ende's focus on "the borders of Fantastica" - the focus thoughout the novel on crossing borders, climbing walls, and passing gates all serve as a powerful comment on a split Communist/Democratic Germany represented by the Berlin Wall, and a dream for post-national fluidity. "The Neverending Story" is not just a novel, but a challenge - for us to mitigate the power of power, to reevaluate our relationships to people and to literature, to be individuals, and not the "weak-minded" followers that Gmork lusts after. This is really a terrific book, and one that no doubt will continue to enthrall and delight.

From School Library Journal
Grade all levels?Penguin's production amplifies the fact that A.A. Milne has created some of the most memorable poetry and prose in children's literature. Charles Kuralt narrates all the tapes. When We Were Very Young resounds with Kuralt's lively reading of the nonsensical and onomatopoetic rhymes that fill the heads of toddlers. Opposite these poems, the narrator reads, with loving care, the verses about the real and imaginary playmates that warm youngsters' hearts. Now We Are Six reflects the growing complexity of a child's world. The narrator's voice is soft and vulnerable when reading of the innocent, inquisitive thoughts that preoccupy children, yet Kuralt speaks with a touch of exasperation when reading the poems depicting the young's struggle to understand the adult world. He does equally as well with Milne's stories. All the inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood are introduced and their humorous escapades chronicled in Winnie-the-Pooh. While portraying the characters, Kuralt's child-like tone reflects their goodness, innocence, and wee intellect. The House at Pooh Corner continues the adventures of Pooh and introduces the bouncing, pouncing, lovable Tigger. Besides the delight children will experience when listening to the light-hearted, captivating stories, young listeners will also identify with the universal hopes, fears, and wishes of the characters. Kuralt's deep, learned-sounding voice gives the narration a fatherly, comforting feel. Libraries will want to acquire these high quality productions.?Mark P. Tierney, William B. a JOY to hold as well as READ
By A. Karlsson
Before I bought this book I had read a few comments complaining about the color of the pages... somewhat yellowish in an almost but not quite parchmenty sort of way. Oh bother, said I, This is coloring my experience of the book. It's been in the back of my mind through every chapter, "Do I like this? Or do I not?" First let me say I love the brushed watercolors over the illustrations... I'm enthralled by the book jacket and the way the window is lit up by the colored version beneath on the actual cover... and the truth is I would have picked a slightly different page color -- but that's besides the point. It's still a lovely edition and my first grader certainly has no complaints.

On top of that, I'd forgotten how wonderful Pooh is. I'm so jaded by the Disney versions that invade every store and home (except mine) that I've spent a lot of time bypassing poor Pooh & Co altogether. We had recently revamped reading aloud here at home because books "written for first graders" were too mindless, books written at the reading level of Pooh today are written for an intellectual level of thought and humor that is beyond the first grader (A. A. Milne had an incredible gift for including all levels of maturity in these works) so our attempts there got tossed aside as my first grader played with his toes, fingers, hair and anything else he could reach because the books just weren't "keeping him." So I tallied up a new library budget and between Amazon and Abe Books did an overhaul... Pooh certainly is one that has hit the spot. The writing is more like how I would speak to my son, but the story is still appealing to the imagination of a first grader, the plot easily managed... so we've started each sit down with a couple of Milne poems and then followed it up with a chapter or two from this and The House At Pooh Corner Deluxe Edition thank the heavens for older books still in print! Do yourSELF the same favor, and while you're at it, toss out any of those Disney Pooh books... this will do so much more for your child's development.

Somewhat Disappointing
By A. P.
First of all, as pretty as the die-cut dust jacket is, it's prone to tearing. And if you have young children this is likely to be an issue, which sort of spoils the whole collector's/heirloom edition thing. Second, although I would ordinarily like the cream colored pages and colored illustrations, I don't like how they did it for this edition. Starting in the early '90s Dutton published full-color editions of all four of Milne's books (Winnie-the-Pooh, The House At Pooh Corner, When We Were Very Young, and Now We Are Six) on white paper, and the illustrations blended perfectly with the pages. Unfortunately, for this 80th anniversary edition the publisher seems to have simply reused the color pictures from the 1991 edition, complete with the white backgrounds for each illustration. The effect of this against the cream colored pages of this new book looks a bit sloppy to me, as if someone had cut out the pictures from the 1991 edition and pasted them onto the pages of this new one. The older color editions of Milne's books are still available through Amazon (search for "Winnie-the-Pooh full-color gift edition"), and in my opinion they're nicer than this new edition.

What richness, what grandeur is so easily captured? :)
By Lindsay Harrison
This classic is listed under the age group of four to eight, and as a Poohphile I am quite appalled that it is. Winnie the Pooh books have such wit, wisdom, and humor that gets better every time I read them. Their not just for children, they are for everyone. Over the years, Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo have become some of my dearest chums. I once heard someone say, or perhaps I read it, that "books are like dear friends, and who has too many friends?" I am quite inclined to agree with that statement. This book is a dear friend of mine and I hope that you shall make it yours. :)

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-When the Barton High School football team's coach is injured in a car accident, the student manager is asked to fill in for the last game of the season. Beano Hatton is a stereotypical nerd, unathletic but intelligent. All of a sudden, he must command the respect and trust of the team members who have virtually ignored him for the last three years. The notion of a student manager being made acting coach is ridiculous. Dygard only halfheartedly tries to explain why no adults can substitute for the man. Even worse, he dismisses the female basketball coach from consideration solely because she is a woman. Even if readers accept the far-fetched premise, Beano's obligatory moments of self-doubt are unconvincing. By the time the game has ended, he comes off as the greatest coach since Knute Rockne. He doesn't make a mistake all game, and every one of his ideas is a resounding success, resulting in the inevitable victory. A bland, formulaic book that bogs down even further during an unbearably boring game sequence.
George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA

From Kirkus Reviews
When tiny Barton High's football coach is hospitalized a week before the season's last game, only bookish student manager Hubert ``Beano'' Hatton is available to step in. Never having coached before, Beano is faced with several challenges: organizing practice sessions, dealing with the local media, gaining his team's respect, outfacing prima donna quarterback Marty Tucker, and--most importantly--working out a plan to beat the Carterville Bobcats. Dygard develops the idea that thinking, as much as athletic ability, wins games, and shows real insight into the art of coaching. Concealing his uncertainty behind a confident mask, Beano rises to the occasion; and his sharp analysis of Carterville's players gives his team the victory. As usual with Dygard, the climactic game is a real edge-of-the-seater; younger readers will also appreciate the simple language and repetition of key points. Game Plan Scores With Me
By Matt Lauer
I am an 8th grade student at Washington Middle School and a sports fanatic. I love football, and Game Plan really kept my attention. My mom had to take the book away from me so I would go to sleep.
I liked the book because the main character, Beano Hatton, went from being a "nobody" to a "hero." It showed me what believing in yourself and having a positive attitude can do. The author, Thomas J. Dygard, has written lots of sports books, and as exciting as Game Plan was to read, I am for sure going to read more of his books.
I would highly recommend this book to anybody who likes football, and also to those who like adventure stories. Game Plan really hits "pay dirt!"

Jeremy Gabrielson's Review for Game Plan
By A Customer
1. Thomas, J. Dygard. (1993). Game Plan.

New York: William Morrow and Company, Inc.

2. This story is about a skinny senoir that is the student manager of the Barton High Tigers. The choach of the Tigers crashes in a terrible car accident and goes into intensive care. This leaves the pricapal to decide the new acting coach and he picks Beano, (thats what they call him and his real name is Hubert Hatten)the student manager, to coach the last game of the season against their heated rival, the Carterville Bobacts. He has to draw up a game plan and he doesn't know how because as student manager he only watched the game and he doesn't have a clue how to write a game plan or coach a game. Also the whole school is counting on him to win. Not only does he not know how to coach. He also has to deal with the jock quaterback who doesn't want to listen to the little wimpy student manager. The last thing he has to deal with is his own lack of cofidence.

3.The theme could be courage because Beano had to have courage to step up to the challenge of coaching the tigers in thier last game. He also has to stand up to the players who are twice his size.

4.I would recomend this book for my classmates becuase even though it starts slow it teaches about courage. It also shows that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

5.Sports Fiction 8 because it started slow and the beginning was boring

Game Plan

With the coach gone, who will coach the team for the hardest game of the season... Game Plan is about this high school football team that lost their coach before the last game and needed a coach. The team manager, Beano, stepped in to be coach. With a week to practice, Beano would lead the team to the last game.

The audience for this book is probably young teenagers. The audience is probably young teenagers because younger kids would probably not understand it, and older kids probably would not want to read it.

The writer writes with a normal tone. It isn't that confusing to read. For example, there aren't many words that you don't know, and the way he writes is easy to understand. This book kept me interested through the entire book. Everytime I picked it up to read it, I didn't want to put it down. One quote in the book was "You Coach, I'll play".

The author put the information in chronological order. He didn't put too much or too little, he put enough for it to make sense. In this book there were no pictures, or charts, but there were some facts. Some facts included scores of games, plays, and stats. The information in this book is perfect. It isn't confusing at all. All the information comes at the needed time.

In conclusion I liked the book. If you like football, or like to read good books than I would read this book. Game Plan was an overall good book.

Ramayana, by Valmiki

One of India s two greatest epics, the Ramayana pervades the country s moral and cultural consciousness. For generations it has served as a bedtime story for Indian children, while at the same time engaging the interest of philosophers and theologians. Now this magnificent translation makes the monumental work available to a new audience.

Believed to have been composed by Valmiki sometime between the eighth and sixth centuries BC, the Ramayana tells the tragic and magical story of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, an incarnation of Lord Visnu, born to rid the earth of the terrible demon Ravana. Exiled for fourteen years because of his stepmother s fit of jealousy on the eve of his coronation, Rama enters the forests of Dandaka with his beautiful wife Sita and devoted brother Laksmana. Sita is abducted from the forest by Ravana who takes her to his isolated kingdom on the far side of the southern ocean. The two brothers set out to rescue her and, along the way, make an alliance with a dispossessed monkey, king Sugriva. At the end of a bloody war Ravana is killed and Sita, reunited with her husband, and victorious Rama returns to Ayodhya to claim the throne that is rightfully his.

An idealized heroic tale ending with the inevitable triumph of good over evil, the Ramayana is also an intensely personal story of family relationships, love and loss, duty and honour, of harem intrigue, petty jealousies and destructive ambitions. All this played out in a universe populated by larger-than-life humans, gods and celestial beings, wondrous animals and terrifying demons.

Met and Exceeded Expectations. An Epic, Renewed
By Abhinav Agarwal
This abridged translation of Valmiki's Ramayana, by Arshia Sattar, based on the Baroda Critical Edition, is a beautiful effort and should be on the reading list of anyone interested in reading, or re-reading the Ramayana. The Ramayana, also known as "adikavya" - the first poem, and its putative author, Valmiki, as "adikavi" - the first poet, is also an epic, one of two in Hindu literature, the other being the massive Mahabharata.

The basic story of the Ramayana is more or less known by most Indians - the prince of Ayodhya - Rama, son of King Dashratha and Queen Kaushalya, and husband of Sita, on the eve of his coronation as crown-prince - is banished to live for fourteen years in the forest as a result of a boon Dashratha had granted to his wife Kaikeyi, step-mother to Rama. While in the forest, in the thirteenth year of exile, Sita is kidnapped by the Lord of Lanka, Ravana. Rama and Lakshmana take the help of the monkey king Sugriva, his faithful follower, Hanuman, and the monkey army, to cross the ocean, invade Lanka, and kill Ravana and free Sita.

What this book seeks to do is to follow the "Baroda Critical Edition of Valmiki's poem" ("prepared by the Oriental Institute at M.S. University, Baroda"), "constructed by the meticulous and painstaking comparison of manuscripts and manuscript traditions." The "primary" motivation in such an exercise as the critical edition is the "scholarly desire to reconstruct the original text." While critics of the "critical method" have been accused of "romanticizing the oral tradition", "the idea that the critical edition defines the boundaries of the 'text' itself persists, despite the fact that all those familiar with Indian texts agree that a unique notion of tradition ("परंपरा " - parampara) informs and circumscribes these texts." The question whether there should even be a "critical edition" of epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, that owe their widespread popularity as much to their stories as to the tradition of oral recitation of the epics by bards, poets, and itinerants who took the epic to all corners of the country, and beyond, employing classical tools like "iteration, formulaic composition" to aid memorability, is not one that I seek to ask, nor is it one that I, at this stage at least, am particularly interested in finding an answer to.

The challenge in this abridged translation is two-fold: one is to excise without altering the story, while also preserving the lyrical nature and the underlying tragic arc of the epic. It is in these that the translation succeeds excellently. The other challenge, easier in some ways, is to not add anything to the tale that is not there in the Critical Edition.

Perhaps the two biggest differences between Valmiki's Ramayana and versions that have followed are in the treatment of Rama's divinity, and attempts to reconcile Rama's character with his two flawed acts.
"two unresolved issues that linger and haunt the reader/listener long after Valmiki's story is over: Rama's unlawful acts and his ignorance of his divine status. The killing of Vali and his rejection of Sita are so outrageously out of character that there is almost nothing within the premises and assumptions of Valmiki's tale that can justify them." [page liii]
So much is the dissonance that these acts evoke in the reader that thousands of years have passed by in trying to address and reconcile these acts.
We can suggest that all the Rama stories that follow Valmiki's are attempts to resolve this issue narratively as well as structurally. [page liii]
While later works based on the Ramayana - derivative works, regional translations, retellings, dramatizations - have attempted to address the "two unresolved issues" in their own way, it is illuminating to read what the Critical Edition has to say on the topic. Rama is not left unscathed - whether in his imperious rejection of a dying Vali's accusations, his rationalizing his rejection of Sita, or his lack of any discernible remorse at his treatment of Sita - Valmiki leaves us with a character who is human, and flawed. This dissonance - between the divinity of Rama as an incarnation of Vishnun on the one hand, and his human failings and moral frailty on the other hand - was sought to be addressed, even suppressed perhaps by later retellings. The original tale leaves it to the reader to grasp and grapple with this unresolved issue.

A simplified and consistent portrait of a divine god who could do no wrong made Rama worthy of worship and as an ideal people and society could aspire to, but it also deprived us of the opportunity to study and learn from the life of a human. Whereas Rama's devotion to his father, and even to his step-mother, has defined the ideal of a dutiful son in the Indian psyche, and whereas Sita's following her husband in exile, and then her faith in the face of Ravana and his rakshasis in Lanka have defined our expectations of an ideal wife, Rama's failings are equally instructional. They made him human. Humans can learn from humans, gods humans can only worship.

At some point the reader, such as myself, may ask how the accuracy or the faithfulness of this book should be evaluated. Against the Critical Edition? Few have read the Critical Edition. Even the editors of the Critical Edition exercised discretion, subjective at times one can be sure, in deciding what to include and what to exclude. The Critical Edition also has its critics - some of the most popular episodes that in some ways define the epic for the common man are sometimes not to be found in the Critical Edition. An epic owes its status as much to popular perceptions as to the story itself. Or do you evaluate it against the original Sanskrit text? It does not exist. The earliest extant manuscript of the Ramayana is less than a thousand years old, while the epic itself dates back at least a thousand years before that. Against Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas? No - that is not the Ramayana, it is Saint Tulsidas' retelling, not a translation, and that too set in a particular moral and societal context. Against modern versions like those by RK Narayan (which is actually a retelling of Kamban's version), Kamala Subramaniam, or C Rajagopalachari?

In the end, this becomes a subjective and personal decision. As a subjective and personal decision, it is open to debate, and it is open to change, as should be expected. Therein lies an escape hatch for the reviewer too!

A note about the edition. This is a "Penguin Black Classics" edition. More than anything else, there are two points I want to point out. The first is that the paper is thin. While the print from one side does not bleed to the other, the paper does feel cheap. The second, and more redeeming point, is that this is cloth bound and basically a lay-flat binding. This is important. You open the book to any page and lay it flat without having the pages close up on each other. It means that the book is going to last a while without running the risk of the pages coming apart. There is a cheaper edition also available, at less than half the price of this edition, but I fear that the pages are likely to start coming apart fairly soon.

A lyrical abridgement.
By Vinaya Manmohansingh
This is an abridgement of the full Ramayana. The prose is beautiful, so poetic that it sticks in my memory long years after reading it. My favorite passages describe Jataayu's sacrificial defense of Seeta, and Hanuman's flight to search out for Seeta in Lanka.

A Must Read For Children
By Daniel N
This is one of my most favorite books, and I absolutely fell in love with this author. Kit Pearson really made me fall in love with reading.

This is three books in one, and the print is pretty large, so most children won't have very much trouble getting through the book. The first of the trilogy provides very good insight into what it was like for British children coming to Canada at the beginning of World War II. The focus is on ten year old Norah, and the writing pulls you along her emotional roller coaster.

The second book is set just two years after the first book and again focuses on Norah at age 13...just as she's hit puberty. The emotions are strong in this one, so grab a box of tissues :) Norah meets a boy and struggles with her feelings for him, it's quite a smashing read.

The third and final book is more focused on Gavin, now 10 and quite comfortable with his life in Canada. He hardly remembers his family and home back in England and would rather stay with his caregiver, Aunt Florence, who represents security than go back to England, a place that seems so unsafe to him.

Seriously, buy this book and read it to your children. Read it yourself and grab a couple more of Kit Pearson's books. I bought this online because books by Canadian authors are so hard to come by in America.

Best book ever
By Blu Logan
This book is great! I read it when I was 8 or 9 and I read all of her series and I re-read them many times. Now as an adult, I take care of kids and they love her as an author as much as I do..
Kit Pearson is a Canadian author, and she isn't recognized as much in the states, but she deserves it!

Always good reading from Kit Pearson
By Katya
My daughter (12) and I both loved this book, as we do most of Kit Pearson's. I liked parts one and two better than three (perhaps I just liked Nora's perspective better than Gavin's) but all of it is very good!
