Selected Essays (Penguin Classics), by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson believed that an appreciation of its vast natural resources would become the foundation of American culture. His assertion that human thought and actions proceed from nature, was a radical departure from the traditional European emphasis on domesticating nature to suit human needs. His philosophy is rich in common natural scenes of daily life, and expresses the inherent harmony between man and nature. This collection brings together 15 of Emerson's most significant essays, including "Nature", "The American Scholar", "Self-reliance" and "The Transcendentalist", as well as his assessments of Montaigne, Napoleon and Thoreau.

Mighty thoughts that can shake your life!
By Fernando Beirão
This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I know that many people don't like to read essays of any kind, but all I can say is that Ralph Waldo Emerson is simply different! Nobody has the gift to write essays and analyze life like him.
His words and ideas are so powerful and deep that we soon realize that they didn't come only from a brilliant mind, but also from a warm-hearted soul!
That's exactly what this book is about: Its sentences break through your brain and penetrate right into your soul! Emerson's optimistic view on human beings and life can only reinforce our courage in mankind and, especially, in ourselves!
What else can I say? His speech is direct, he defends all the good values, tell us to have confidence in ourselves and show us that passing through life with dignity is a matter of choice and courage, and that it simply doesn't change with time. It was like this a thousand years ago, it will probably follow the same rules a thousand years f! ! rom now.
This is the book I grab to comfort my spirit when I'm having difficult times... :) It is a guide that make us believe that anything is possible when we really want it! " Self-Reliance ", one of the essays inside this book, is a masterpiece in its own and I believe it should be studied in every high school, instead some of the crap we are usually obliged to read!
This book can shape your spirit and your mind. It is also possibly THE BEST self-help book you could ever own and, yet, a great literary work.
I would rate this book as ageless and I'm sure the future generations will be still interested in it, such as are we in those ancient Greek and Roman texts.
This is precious culture and food for your soul as a bargain! Do not waste more time. READ IT!!!

A good place to start
By Dustin Joseph Anderson
Ralph Waldo Emerson's essays don't make for an easy read, but Emerson, luckily for us, decided not to accept the easy, run of the mill explanation of the life he found around him. It takes discipline and effort to tackle Emerson's work, and I have to say that it was well worth it for me. This small paperback collection has got to be one of the best places to start for those of you interested in having a go at one of THE Trascendentalist writers. This collecion brings together in a very inexpensive buy most of his greatest prose. With this, you get "Nature," "The American Scholar," "Man the Reformer," "History," "Self-Reliance," "The Over-Soul," "The Trascendentalist," "The Poet," "Experience," and more. If there is one place to start reading Emerson, than this might as well be among the top choices. Not only is it inexpensive, but it's small, light, and easy to take around. It also includes a great introduction (by Larzer Ziff) to Emerson the man and the world in which he wrote. I highly recommend it.

Emerson and his thought. Profound.
By Mr. Eli
This book asks the reader to think quite a bit. When I initially read the collection, I was turned off by the monotony of the diction and the drab subject matter. However, I found that Emerson asks his reader to think about his own thoughts and gain insight into the ideas he presents. This collection is an impeccable work of Transcendentalism and can be related to modern life as well. If you choose to read this book in the historical sense, you are sure to gain information about the mindset of the time in which it was written. Emerson's view on Man, Society, Nature, and the world in general is certain to provide you with hours upon hours of analyzation, introspection and plain old satisfaction. I recommend this collection essays enthusiastically.

Black Leadership: Four Great American Leaders and the Struggle for Civil Rights, by Manning Marable

In a powerful book that belongs next to Cornel West's bestselling Race Matters, African American intellectual Manning Marable examines the role of black leadership.

The history of the black struggle for civil rights and political and economic equality in America is deeply tied to the strategies, agendas, and styles of black leaders. In this compelling work, Manning Marable presents thought-provoking portraits of some of this century's most vital black leaders, delving into significant but little-studied aspects of their careers.

At the heart of the book are probing examinations of four leaders whose legacies speak to the challenges of race, class, and power: Booker T. Washington's conservative strategy of accommodation to segregation, Harold Washington's failure to uproot Chicago's political machine, the nationalist separatism of Louis Farrakhan, and the democratic transformation championed by W.E.B. Du Bois. Cogently argued and lucidly written, Black Leadership goes beyond the rhetoric of racial politics and renews the possibility of lasting cultural change throughout American society.

"One of the most exciting and important books on race and black leadership to appear in quite a while. . . . This book is woven together with a golden thread of scholarly vision and intellectual unity." --Michael Eric Dyson, author of Race Rules: Navigating the Color Line

Amazon.com Review
This important work from noted Afro-American intellectual and Columbia University professor Manning Marable examines the "ideology, culture and politics" of black leaders. Marable's "analysis of black leadership in the twentieth century" concentrates on three traditions of black power: the accommodationist perspective characterized by Booker T. Washington, the nationalist-separatist slant advocated by Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam, and the ideology of democratic transformation championed by W.E.B. Du Bois. Black Leadership defines each of these positions, then dissects their flaws. Marable argues, for example, that Washington's political strategy led to the segregationist "Jim Crow" laws. Citing the aura of black separatist nationalism that underlined the Million Man March led by Farrakhan in 1996, Marable notes that "the social philosophy behind its agenda was deeply conservative and pessimistic about the likelihood that whites would ever recognize or respond to blacks' grievances." Other notable figures like Paul Robeson and Chicago's first black mayor, Harold Washington, are discussed, and Marable ultimately posits that black leaders should align themselves with multicultural coalitions: "There is no monochromatic model for democratic social change in a pluralistic society." --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly
Despite the title's promise, this collection of academic essays has a more limited goal, according to Columbia historian Marable (Race, Reform, and Rebellion): to "profile the ideas and leadership" of Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, Harold Washington and Louis Farrakhan. Actually, even that schematic seems strained, as Marable includes four essays about DuBois, and only one each about the other three. The essays on DuBois add up to an interesting precis of his multifaceted influence on black culture, his radical religious faith, his spur to Pan-Africanism and his "critique linking racism, war, and peace." The title also could have indicated Marable's incisive leftist analysis: Booker T. Washington's accommodationist strategy sacrificed black workers, he writes, while Chicago mayor Washington's reliance on personal charisma meant no organization could succeed him. While Farrakhan's "black fundamentalist nationalism" invokes conservative economics and alliances with the likes of Lyndon LaRouche, Marable sees the empowerment of black workers?within a reformed labor movement?as the best source of progressive politics beyond the Democratic Party and civil rights community.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
In this study, the prolific Marable (history, Columbia and director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies) examines the key personalities and critical themes of 20th-century black political history.

Straight From L. Tunstall
By L. Tunstall Scott 4
The book, a Teacup Full of Roses, was basically talking about a black strong family who was struggling but worked very hard to get what they wanted. The mother, Mattie cared a lot about her son, Paul who does drugs. David, the youngest brother was very smart and Joe was very determined and hard working. Aunt Lou always talked about death and the father always watched tv or read a newspaper. My favorite character was Joe because he was so determined to do what he had to do. A Teacup Full of Roses was a book based on family. The main characters in te book were the Mom, Dad, Joe, Davey, Paul and his girlfriend.

From the looks of it the only person his mom love is paul. He has other brothers like Joe. Joe has a gift too, he can come up with some wonderfull short stories.Davey is another brother of Paul's and his gift is that he can play basketball like a pro.

Interesting Chinese history, too much religion
By Christy Mckenna
I really enjoyed the book, Rebels of the Heavenly Kingdom by Katherine Paterson, but someone who isn't really interested in history might not like it as much. The book tells the story of Wang Lee, a young man who is involved in the Taiping Rebellion in China in the 1850s. It seemed to me to be historically accurate and there were a lot of interesting facts about China during this period. I learned about what people ate, what weapons they used, what their religious beliefs were and how the government worked. The parts of the book that I liked the least were when the book focused on Christianity in China and makes Christianity look like complete perfection and represents the Chinese religious beliefs as almost like demon worship. The author, who was born in China and lived there a long time, was the daughter of a missionary to China and studied Christian education in college. The author's views on Christianity are very clear in the book. However, because she had first-hand Chinese experience from when she lived there as a child, I also think her descriptions of China and its history are accurate. The author did a great job making Wang Lee an interesting character and I cared about what happened to him in the book and kept reading to find out the ending. The reason I stayed interested in the book was that there wasn't just one high point to the story, but there were several different climaxes in several different exciting parts to the story. I think anyone who has interest in Chinese history, even if they don't care about the religious beliefs in the book, would like this book.

Rebels of The Heavenly Kingdom
By Vicky I. Barnes
This story begins with Wang Lee a teenaged boy who while tending his field is greeted by a not so friendly bandit named Red Eye and his two companions. Luckily no harm is done to Wang Lee or his family but he was forced to accompany the bandits. wang Lee travels with the bandits for awhile until Mei Lin a young woman buys him off of Red Eye. she takes him to a dinner hall where he is well fed. He soon learns from her about the Mandate of Heaven and of god. Against his will he is forced into their religious society. As it turns out thier group his protected by the government or should be but imperial soldiers had been seen marching towards thier holy city. Wang Lee,Mei Lin and Chu an elderly companion must do what it takes to protect each other and the Mandate of Heaven.

This book has plenty of action and is based on very true and real morales. Anyone young or old can get something out of this book.this novel isnt to lengthy and has a very well thought out plot aside from a predictable ending. predictable but not bad.

Better Than Average Kids Book
By Linda
The beginning of the book is great but towards the end it begins to drag a little. However, it does reveal facts about Chinese culture during the 1850s. Overall, it's better than average and is a good book to read. Fifteen year old Wang Lee is kidnapped at the beginning of the novel by bandits. He travels with them for awhile but is sold to a girl named Mei Lin. She is unlike the other women in China during the time because her feet are not bound and she is a high ranking officer in the rebel group so he falls in love with her. Wang Lee joins the rebels and they fight in the holy war against the oppressive Manchu overlords. The ending is expected so this book does not deserve 5 stars.

From the Publisher
If Melville had never written Moby Dick, his place in world literature would be assured by his short tales. "Billy Budd, Sailor," his last work, is the masterpiece in which he delivers the final summation in his "quarrel with God." It is a brilliant study of the tragic clash between social authority and individual freedom, human justice and abstract good. Melville also explores this theme in "Bartelby the Scrivener," his famous story about a Wall Street law clerk who takes passive resistance to a comic--and ultimately disastrous--extreme; and in "Benito Cereno," his dazzling account of oppression and rebellion on a nineteenth-century slave ship. Completing this collection of great tales are the eerie "The Encantados," the beautiful, romantic "The Piazza," and Melville's chilling science fiction parable, "The Bell-Tower."

About the Author
Herman Melville was born in August 1, 1819, in New York City, the son of a merchant. Only twelve when his father died bankrupt, young Herman tried work as a bank clerk, as a cabin-boy on a trip to Liverpool, and as an elementary schoolteacher, before shipping in January 1841 on the whaler Acushnet, bound for the Pacific. Deserting ship the following year in the Marquesas, he made his way to Tahiti and Honolulu, returning as ordinary seaman on the frigate United States to Boston, where he was discharged in October 1844. Books based on these adventures won him immediate success. By 1850 he was married, had acquired a farm near Pittsfield, Massachussetts (where he was the impetuous friend and neighbor of Nathaniel Hawthorne), and was hard at work on his masterpiece Moby-Dick.

Literary success soon faded; his complexity increasingly alienated readers. After a visit to the Holy Land in January 1857, he turned from writing prose fiction to poetry. In 1863, during the Civil War, he moved back to New York City, where from 1866-1885 he was a deputy inspector in the Custom House, and where, in 1891, he died. A draft of a final prose work, Billy Budd, Sailor, was left unfinished and uncollated, packed tidily away by his widow, where it remained until its rediscovery and publication in 1924.

Frederick Busch (1941–2006) was the recipient of many honors, including an American Academy of Arts and Letters Fiction Award, a National Jewish Book Award, and the PEN/Malamud Award. The prolific author of sixteen novels and six collections of short stories, Busch is renowned for his writing’s emotional nuance and minimal, plainspoken style. A native of Brooklyn, New York, he lived most of his life in upstate New York, where he worked for forty years as a professor at Colgate University.

Power and magnificence overcomes difficult writing
By Stan Vernooy
This novella is difficult to read, with long and complex sentences and perhaps unnecessary diversions. But its power and depth reward the effort it takes to read it.
"Billy Budd" is an allegory of a young seaman who strikes and kills a superior officer when the officer's cruelty and treachery become unbearable. The focus of the story is the debate over whether to execute the seaman (Billy Budd) for his crime. With passionate and terrifying logic, Melville (through the voice of Captain Vere) demonstrates that human perfection is impossible - not because we humans are weak, but because perfection simply does not and cannot exist in this world. To make decisions based on our notion of "divine justice" is not only impractical and foolhardy, according to Melville, but even immoral.
If you like to think of yourself as an idealist, then reading this book will leave some unanswered questions in your mind, possibly for the rest of your life. I first read this story more than thirty years ago, and it still affects the way I think about almost everything to this day.

About the Author
Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1817. He graduated from Harvard in 1837, the same year he began his lifelong Journal. Inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau became a key member of the Transcendentalist movement that included Margaret Fuller and Bronson Alcott. The Transcendentalists' faith in nature was tested by Thoreau between 1845 and 1847 when he lived for twenty-six months in a homemade hut at Walden Pond. While living at Walden, Thoreau worked on the two books published during his lifetime: Walden (1854) and A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849). Several of his other works, including The Maine Woods, Cape Cod, and Excursions, were published posthumously. Thoreau died in Concord, at the age of forty-four, in 1862.

The Perfect Introduction to Thoreau's Journals
By Amazon Customer
Many readers exposure to Thoreau's published self-contained books like _Walden_ and _The Maine Woods_ are intrigued enough to look deeper. Inevitably, you end up with the Journals.
The journals are so long and copious, that it can be hard to decide where to start. I don't know off-hand how many pages or words there are, but there are enough of Thoreau's Journals out there to last you 3 to 5 years of reading.
So! You should buy this starter book to introduce you to the flavor of the Journals. If you also read some of the Biographies out there, you learn that Thoreau's life went through some distinct periods, which will be reflected in the different Journals. Many folks think 1851 was a magic and expanding year for him, and that's why this book follows this year alone.
My only complaint about the book using this time frame is that it sort of Pornographically selects from all the years of the Journals--and pornographically selects from 1851. As if all T's days were charmed, all rich with experience.
But the Journal selections excerpted here and this book as a whole have many good qualities that outway my only complaint. They are:
1.--This book follows a year, and T was very much influenced by the seasons. Coming full circle in a year with T is good reading.
2.--The book doesn't try to do too much. If an Introduction book does its job, it should leave you wanting more deep info on the subject. This book did that for me.
3.--There are a couple-few cool replications of drawings T did in his journal. Bonus points for these.
Overall, the subject material here is awesome. If you only know Thoreau through his published "books" and if you like them (especially the naturalist part of them), the Journals will change your world. This book does a solid good job of introducing you to the Journals.

Best way to experience his journals
By anemones
Henry David Thoreau's journal is his masterpiece, and somewhat different to his more polished works.

This is by far the best way to experience his journal, too. Short excerpted collections are problematic because you cannot get used to the flow of his writing, and the changing nature of it over the lifespan of the journal. This book, which is the full year of 1851, may contain less-than-stellar entries, but it also contains some rippers, and is definitely the best way to experience it. It was about this time in his life that Thoreau decided to stop using his journal just as a source for his other books, and rather to create it for its own sake. And it shows - this is not writing to be chopped up and excerpted, but to be enjoyed in its entirety.

The best possible introduction to the masterpiece of his life - 5 stars.

Day by day, one world at a time
By William Timothy Lukeman
As previous reviewers have noted, this is an ideal introduction to Thoreau's immense Journal, which can be overwhelming if taken all at once -- especially by someone unfamiliar with Thoreau the writer & thinker. By wisely choosing one crucial year, we follow Thoreau day by day as he describes the world around him, both natural & human; at the same time, we're privy to his philosophical musings & digressions, which demonstrate the shaping & progression of his thought. This edition even includes his simple but clear drawings of leaves, clouds, etc., interspersed in the text.

It's fascinating to see how Thoreau went from being considered a failure in his own time to one of the most prescient & relevant American writers of our time. The materialism, the conspicuous consumption, the degradation of both the natural world & human relationships -- he saw it all coming, and did his best to offer an alternative worldview, one based on the development & growth of a genuinely authentic life. Given the superficiality & essential emptiness of current society, that alternative worldview is desperately needed now.

And simply as literature, this is beautiful reading, with a deceptively simple prose that's been carved & polished with incredible precision. Yet it seems to emerge on each page as something spontaneous & natural, like the unfolding & flowering of a green branch in Spring. At the same time, Thoreau can be humorous, particularly in a satiric vein; and he can also be quite pungent, as well.

This isn't for everyone, if course -- although many who'll undoubtedly shun or ignore it would probably benefit from it. But for anyone who hungers for something deeper than the illusion of a worthwhile life -- the one that's offered by contemporary culture in all media -- this is rich & fertile ground. Most highly & urgently recommended!

Kiss Me, Judas, by Will Christopher Baer

Will Christopher Baer's hypnotic debut novel merges the best of the noir tradition with a scalpel-sharp modern sensibility. When ex-cop Phineas Poe is released from a six-month stay in a Denver psychiatric hospital, he meets a savage and unsentimental woman named Jude. After a drunken night with her, Phineas awakens in a bathtub packed with ice, holding a soggy note that reads "if you want to live, call 911." Jude has taken one of his kidneys. This phantasmagoric tale follows Poe as he pursues, and falls for, the mysterious Jude and is plunged into an edgy, drug-blurred underworld inhabited by a gleeful cast of sinister characters. Fast, furious, and glittering with a razor-sharp wit, this is a startling novel of modern noir.

Amazon.com Review
In his extremely dark but very effective first thriller, former cabdriver and homeless counselor Will Christopher Baer takes that old urban legend of the man who wakes up in a hotel bathtub full of ice to discover that somebody has removed one of his kidneys and whips it up into a modernized Edgar Allan Poe nightmare. Baer's hero is in fact called Phineas Poe--an ex-cop who spent six years digging up dirt in and on the Denver P.D.'s Internal Affairs Division. On his first night out after a nervous breakdown and a six-month stay in a psychiatric hospital, Poe is picked up by a prostitute named Jude who drugs his drink and deftly removes his kidney.

Poe heads for the Witch's Teat, a sex shop where his friend Crumb works. "Crumb isn't really a doctor. He does cheap abortions and gunshot wounds and even dental work for the mad and desperate," Baer writes in deceptively plain present-tense prose, which quickly mesmerizes like electronic music. "Crumb reads a lot. He has a closet full of old surgical textbooks and a lot of stolen equipment. And he doesn't try to fake you. If you come to him with a ruptured bowel or a crushed spine, he gives you a cup of tea and sends you to the hospital." Poe learns that his kidney has been replaced by a bag of heroin--which could kill him if it dissolves. Intent on retrieving his stolen organ, he traces Jude to a bowling alley called the Inferno. Strangely enough, with Jude he reluctantly discovers the chance of love and family that he thought was gone forever when his wife died. In lesser hands, this flash of light in a roomful of noir could easily have spoiled everything. But Baer makes it all seem as natural as whistling in the dark. --Dick Adler

From Publishers Weekly
Although there are obvious biblical allusions in Baer's stylized debut, this noir tale takes no clearly biblical route. The characters' names promise a governing metaphor: there's Jude, an alluring sociopath; Eve, a black-tongued lesbian; Rose White, a virginal med student; and a bowling alley called the Inferno. There's also a beautiful young man afflicted since birth with HIV (born to die) who begs for a kiss before his demise. Even the title foreshadows a betrayal of biblical proportions. Yet this unrelentingly dark story, set in Colorado and Texas, features mostly underworld characters and a surreal sense of reality. Narrator Phineas Poe, a former investigator for the internal affairs division of Denver's police department, offers only a hallucinatory account that is both compelling and confusing. Just released from a psychiatric hospital, he meets Jude, has sex and awakens in a tub full of ice. He discovers that she's cut into him and stolen one of his kidneys. Despite his weakened state, he tracks her down. On his way, he encounters the Blister, a corrupt cop who reveals that Jude replaced his kidney with a bag of heroin and is using him to smuggle dope. Should the bag dissolve, Poe will die. Should he remove it, he might find a bomb. On the other hand, Jude may be exploiting him as a live carrier of his other kidney for efficient delivery to the man with the money. Poe definitely has problems, not the least of which is the haunting memory of his wife's wretched death. His dilemma only worsens when he joins Jude in her nefarious career, falls in love with her and anticipates her betrayal. Yet she's not what she seems and where they ultimately end up provides this intriguing tale with a quirky, redemptive glow. Editor, Courtney Hodell; agent; Daniel Mandel. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Not for the faint of heart, Kiss Me, Judas starts off bloody and zooms nonstop to a gripping climax. Baer's minimalist debut novel is reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino film?dark, graphic, and twisted?but without the quirky humor. Phineas Poe, an ex-Internal Affairs cop, walks straight out of a mental hospital into his worst nightmare: after drinks with a mysterious woman, he comes to in a bloody, ice-filled hotel bathtub?missing a kidney. "If you want to live, call 911," reads the note left with him. Poe breaks out of the hospital in search of Jude, his seductress, unsure of whether he will kill her or have sex with her and then kill her. Flashbacks and hallucinations, drug-induced and otherwise, hint that Poe has more to deal with than organ-stealing vamps: namely, the bizarre circumstances of his wife's death. A paranoid thriller; for public libraries.?Christine Perkins, Jackson Cty Lib. Svcs., Medford, OR

Poetically stunning

Will is Midas. He writes like a demonic angel. One of the best pure writers there are. He, Clevenger, SGJ, MZD, Palahniuk, Richard Thomas, all artists of the highest caliber. Do something good for yourself. Give your self a treat. Read this and be stunned.

Unanswered questions. This just left me with nothing. The why and what didn't get answered. But still interesting read, just could have closed out in a more detailed way. Lacked in ending, but the rest was amazing.

A Scary Love Story
By Logan Rapp
"Kiss Me, Judas" is summed up nicely by the author himself when he calls it a "scary love story." Many other authors would have used the basic premise of the storyline - the harvesting of one's kidney while the donor is alive and unwilling - to delve into the underbelly of today's black market, but Chris Baer uses it as a dark and gritty backdrop to the core theme he wants us to recognize, and that is of modern-day love and loss.

Baer writes the way everyone aspires to - brutally honest and open. When everyone else has the secrets of their hearts sealed in a box and guarded with sentries, Chris has his unlocked and painted on every page as if writing in his own journal. The things that we lack the courage to even whisper to ourselves are exposed and illuminated for all the world to see and reading it puts Baer's very soul in the limelight.

Each turn of the page slashes another razorblade across his wrist and we ache with every darkly heartfelt comment that Phineas makes. The aching of the protagonist is compelling and the constant questioning of what is real or imagined, true love or false hope, guilt or innocence, puts a ray of light into our own minds, into the questions that we subconsciously ask ourselves but we don't have the fortitude to actually ponder honestly.

Baer shows us how love can bring you to the brink of self-destruction, and how it can also pull you out of the depths. These pages are bruising to the soul, but ultimately cathartic. This is a novel that we need to read, because love is the only feeling that can make anyone fall, but it can keep us from falling, too.

A Treasure for Pleasure & Scholarly Readers Alike
By A Customer
Even if your not a scholar, this tremendous read-aloud reaches all the way back to the voices of the oral tradition, whose rich language and images will transport you to a magical state of being. The Frog King begins "In olden times when wishing still helped one, there lived a king whose daughters were all beautiful, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun itself, which has seen so much, was astonished whenever it shone in her face." Try that at dusk or by candle light, and see if an awed hush doesn't fall over your listener(s)!
For those with a more serious bent, this is perhaps the most accurate English translation of the Grimm's recordings of the oral tales. The complete collection lets you compare the patterns and rhythms of language and story line. The introduction by Padraic Colum and end commentary by Joseph Campbell (some 30 pages) are an added treasure. This version is frequently used by Waldorf teachers, and is "must have" for all primary teachers and families with children.

A quality children's book
By Amy Zimmerman
This beautifully illustrated book is a delight for Brothers Grimm and Arthur Rackham fans. High quality paper is used throughout so the color plates are presented where they occur in each story, instead of being jammed together in the center. The font is easy to read with ample margins, so the stories can be savored without feeling rushed or the aid of a good light. Well done!

Blind Date, by Frances Fyfield

Frances Fyfield's latest heroine, Elisabeth Kennedy, is a complicated, prickly ex-police detective, haunted by the memory of her younger sister's murder, and recovering from a senseless, brutal attack that left her with physical scars and a fractured spirit. Determined to fight back, Elisabeth flees the safe confines of her mother's seaside home to her life in an apartment atop a crumbling London bell tower, where she assumes she will be safe and anonymous. But she finds that even the most cloistered places are not sacrosanct--especially the human heart. As she tracks her quarry, Elisabeth is headed for something far more chilling than loneliness, more savage than self doubt. . . .

"A master of the art of claustrophobic suspense"-- (Boston Globe)

"An elegantly written and . . . genuine whodunit"-- (San Francisco Chronicle)

"Fyfield writes vividly, [with] some of the Gothic quality of Dorothy L. Sayers and P. D. James . . . irresistible."-- John Mortimer, Mail on Sunday

"There are crime writers whom we think of primarily as novelists. They provide the psychological subtlety, intelligence, and excellent writing which are the hallmarks of first-class fiction. There is no one higher on this list than Frances Fyfield."-- P. D. James

Amazon.com Review
Frances Fyfield is a London criminal lawyer who specializes in complex stories about the tangled relationships between the sexes and the big and small crimes that result. Her latest is a subtle, slowly building story that gradually brings together a former policewoman intent on revenge for a murdered sister; two women who find that signing up for an unusual dating service might result in more action than they had in mind; and an apparently kindly and protective man who is also involved with the deadly dating service. Fyfield is the best in the business at showing how women's fears can shape their lives. Other excellent examples in paperback: A Clear Conscience, Deep Sleep, Perfectly Pure and Good, A Question of Guilt, and Without Consent. --Dick Adler

From Publishers Weekly
Fyfield (Without Consent; A Question of Guilt) is an oddly elliptical writer whose stories often sneak up on the reader. In her newest, three plot lines, quite disparate at first, gradually intertwine. Elisabeth Kennedy is a former police detective who had apparently caught the man who murdered her sister, only to have a judge declare she had entrapped him. The man then killed himself?but was he the real murderer? Two of her friends sign up with an odd dating agency to find men, and one of them gets killed, another roughed up. Meanwhile some of Joe Maxell's friends are signed up with the same agency, and big, kindly Joe is trying to share the London church tower where Elisabeth lives: is it to protect her, and if so, from what? Can her young nephew, Matt, obsessed with the precious stones his grandfather may have squirreled away, have seen his mother's murderer? In the course of her cunningly plotted tale, Fyfield explores many anxieties afflicting Elisabeth, her widowed mother and other female characters: fear of loneliness, of being unloved, of losing one's home, of creating a child you can't control. Some of these considerations fail to convince; nor is Elisabeth believable as a former cop, and that the entire cast seems to know each other gives the book a strangely claustrophobic air. But Fyfield is a superb, effective stylist who creates a deliciously murky atmosphere and indelible characters. Author tour. (Sept.) FYI: Penguin will simultaneously publish the paperback edition of Without Consent.

Don't wait for consent to read a terrific twisted tale
By A Customer
All London police officer Elisabeth Kennedy wants out of life is to catch the SOB who murdered her sister Emma. Obsessed by her quest, Elisabeth thinks she finally has the culprit. However, the court throws out the case due to entrapment by the law. A humiliated Elisabeth, realizing that she has failed and is beyond redemption, retires from the force, turning into a semi-hermit.
However, instead of finding an uneasy peace in seclusion, Elisabeth becomes the victim of a brutal assault with acid that deforms her visage. As she recovers in her weird home at the top of a converted bell tower, Elisabeth knows that she must ferret out her sister's killer for her own sake and before the twisted man kills once again as he has done several times since he murdered Emma.
BLIND DATE is a serpentine police procedural/vigilante serial killer work that has several distinct major sub-plots that brilliantly consolidate into a first rate novel. Elisabeth is the typical Frances Fyfield heroine. She is scarred by life's worst blows, but keeps on ticking. Anyone who takes pleasure from a fantastic mystery, should visit the twisted tales (see WITHOUT CONSENT) of Ms. Fyfield because they are some of the genre's best books.

Really readable-- strong and edgy book
By frumiousb
I picked this book up in a discount book store somewhere in Philly after being snowed in on my way back to Europe. It looked like the best of the offerings they had, but I frankly wasn't expecting very much. I was pleasantly suprised, and found myself very quickly drawn into the book and its main character.
I liked Elizabeth Kennedy and I liked the way her character developed. The tension between her and her sister were a good way to open the situation and the way that it developed further was impressive. Small points off for some coincidences that strained credulity, but in general it was believable, and well worth the time that it took to read.

Tantalizing, but disappointing; the plot defies belief
By A Customer
The main characters are well realized and the scenes with Elizabeth and Joe are quite good, memorable, and do keep the book afloat. However, the plot is entirely unbelievable; it's as if London contains about 20 people--the figures in this book, all crossing paths, all knowing each other, all related in less than interesting ways. There is a sub-plot, which I could have done without; namely, mother and the vulgar rich American, of course, which did nothing to move the more interesting story along; that of Elizabeth and her past, dealing with her present and unknowable future. Also, a nit-picky thing: the volume I read contained too many typos and a couple of grammatical howlers. The book was that riveting that I noticed. I wait for the next and hope for better.
