About the Author
EDITH NESBIT was a mischievous child who grew up into an unconventional adult. With her husband, Hubert Bland, she was one of the founder members of the socialist Fabian Society; their household became a centre of the socialist and literary circles of the times. E. Nesbit turned late to children's writing. Her first children's book, THE TREASURE SEEKERS, was published in 1899 to great acclaim. Other books featuring the Bastable children followed, and a series of magical fantasy books, including FIVE CHILDREN AND IT also became very popular. THE RAILWAY CHILDREN was first published monthly in the LONDON MAGAZINE in 1905, and published as a book in 1906 and has been in print ever since.

Harry Potter 100 Years Ago

Working in a bookstore, I meet a lot of people, especially parents buying books for their children. As you can imagine, several of them ask, "What do you have that's like Harry Potter?" I always recommend E. Nesbit's books. They never know who I'm talking about. But they usually become interested very quickly.
Edith Nesbit was an outspoken British writer who wrote enormously entertaining children?s books in her later years. Many of these books combine normal, everyday children with magical themes or elements. In 'The Enchanted Castle,' three children - Gerald, Cathy, and Jimmy - stumble upon a lush, beautiful garden, where they find a princess who has been asleep for 100 years. Or is she really who she says she is? All the children know is that something strange is going on - like why are the statues moving?
'The Enchanted Castle' IS enchanting. The writing is colorful, exciting, and engaging. If your child is looking for something in the Harry Potter vein, the E. Nesbit books are just what the doctor ordered. Kids won't even care that it was written nearly 100 years ago. It still reads pretty well today, and that's what counts.

The Enchanting Book

My children and I have been reading this as our bedtime book. My son, age 8, was going to read it himself, but we soon found his sister, age 6, wanted me to read it instead (so I could do the "voices") so it has been turned into the nightly story. The characters: Gerald, Kathleen, and Jimmy are each drawn clearly and individually. My children are fascinated with Gerald's way of speaking as though he were telling a story. And they love Kathleen's way of alternating between being practical and yet longing for all things "magical". Jimmy is funny and endearing, as he is at that age of Not believing and yet eager for adventure. Their friend Mabel is full of mystery and make-believe and soon pulls them into a grand escapade. The author is able to vividly paint each person and each scene. It is with great reluctance we put the book down after a couple of chapters each night, wanting to finish all at once, but wanting the magic to last a little longer. When we finished, we all decided it was one of our favorites. Extremely well written. I did not find even the beginning dull or slow. From start to finish, this is one of the best children's books I've found. And we've read very many.

Magical

I first read this book at the age of 10, and have made a point of reading it again nearly yearly ever since, for more than 30 years. It is timeless and magical, and for adults as well as children, as long as they have kept their childhood beliefs in enchantment alive. I am not in the habit of gushing praise, but this is absolutely the best book I have ever read, and has become a part of my children's lives as well. I am so happy to see it in print again. My mother searched everywhere for it in the 60's because I was so enamored with it that I wanted to copy it by hand, if necessary. I am now ordering a new untattered copy to keep forever.

'Blackadder' was a BBC English television series staring Rowan Atkinson. It ran for four series (and at least one special).
The four series ran through 450 years of English History, with the same characters reincarnating /reappearing over that time.
It is bloody funny.
Series One has Blackadder as Prince Edmund, the Black Adder under his father (who hated him) Richard IV set in the late 1400's.
Series Two has Lord Edmund Blackadder, a favorite of Elizabeth I.
Series Three has Edmund Blackadder, Butler to the Prince Regent, Prince George (the son of Mad George III).
Series Four has Captain Edmund Blackadder in the trenches of World War One France in 1917.
Always with his dogsbody Baldrick and always descending the social ladder, Blackadder is a revisit on history that is well worth a visit.
The scripts, the primary content of this book, are extremely well written. The authors are Atkinson himself, Ben Elton and Richard Curtis. Other fillers in the book are original and funny.
If you've seen the programs, you will buy the book anyway. If you don't know Blackadder, get the videos from Amazon.com and then buy the book. It is excellent.

A giant rollercoaster of a novel in 400 sizzling chapters.

Well maybe not, but it is over 450 pages of Blackadder! "This book, sir, contains every word in our beloved language." Just kidding, I just had to say that. What this book does contain is the complete scripts for all 24 episodes of the entire Blackadder series written by Richard Curtis & Ben Elton, who are both "as clever as a stick in a bucket of pig swill." and starring the "quite brilliant" comedic talents of Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie, and Stephen Fry, among others. If you have not seen Blackadder, you have no idea what you're missing. However, if you have seen it and don't like it, then I hope you get an extremely itchy rash on "the soft dangly collection of objects in your trousers." There are plenty of other things besides the scripts but I'll leave it as a surprise (or you can just read one of the other reviews). Keep in mind that these are the original scripts, not word for word what you hear on the show. For the most part it is exactly the same, but every once and a while there are different words used in the book. Don't worry, it doesent take away from any humor and the only person that will notice it will be someone, like myself, who has watched Blackadder over and over. Seriously, I put Blackadder III in my DVD player before I go to sleep and sometimes the last thing I hear is "Once upon a time there was a lovely sausage called Baldrick and it lived happily ever after." Anyway the book is essential for the Blackadder fan who can't get enough of the hilarious and original writing. Here are some lines you can read continuously for the rest of your life once you buy this book:
"Population: three rather mangy cows, a dachshund named Colin, and a small hen, in its late forties."
"I took over for the original electorate after he very sadly accidentally brutally cut his head off while combing his hair."
"I am delighted to have been instrumental in keeping your bosom free of arses."
"...eternity in the company of Beelzebub and all his hellish instruments of death will be a picnic compared to five minutes with me and this pencil..."
By the way, all royalties from the sale of this book go to Comic Relief UK. So you're actually doing two good things: Donating to a worthwhile charity and owning a book "so cunning, you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel."

Almost all the Black Adder that you could ever want

This book contains the complete set of scripts for the Black Adder TV episodes, made by the BBC. Black Adder aired as four individual series of six episodes each: The Black Adder, Black Adder II, Black Adder the Third and Black Adder Goes Forth. It does not contain the Xmas special.
The screenplays were written by Richard Curtis (Mr. Bean, Not the nine o'clock news) and Ben Elton - possibly one of the funniest modern writers.
In the first series, Black Adder is a weak chinned, effeminate heir to Richard, Duke of York. Set in medieval England, we are introduced to two of the most often recurring characters in Black Adders live(s) - Percy and Baldrick. Lord Percy is an eager to please, high strung dolt. Baldrick, an filthy peasant that is under qualified to be the village idiot, acts as Black Adder's golfer. Although funny, the first series may miss an American audience with some of it's historical references.
In the second series, Black Adder's next descendant is no longer heir to the throne but remains one of Queen's dearest friends. Set in Elizabethan England, we get to follow Black Adder as he plots to carouse, fornicate and steal his way to pleasure. Even funnier than the first series, Black Adder gets far more clever. We are also introduced to two additional, recurring characters - Melchett and Flash. Melchett is a pompous, over bearing palace sycophant and Flash is fast moving ladies man with more than just a sword hanging between his legs.
Black Adder's fortunes have considerably fallen by the Third Series, where he is now serving a butler to the Price Regent of England, the stupidest man in the land. Again, the clever Black Adder schemes to raise himself at the expense of everyone around him. Other great English comedic actors Hue Laurie, Robbie Coltrane and Tim McInnery all make appearances.
In the fourth and final series, Black Adder finds himself caught on the front lines of World War I. Trying to eke out a comfortable existence without being sent out on a suicidal charge against the Kaiser, Black Adder's fourth series is somewhat reminiscent of Mash. Without all the nice doctor's off course. This series has the "crudest" humour of all.
Black Adder is undoubtedly one of the funniest English comedy series ever made and the screenplays are worth owning.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of 'Run For ...

I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of 'Run For Your Life' for a few pence in a charity shop. The book's cover, a scene from the 1974 Granada Television adaptation (titled 'Soldier and Me') was not encouraging. Cover illustrations of the book's other editions are similarly off-putting but this provides confirmation if it were necessary that one should never judge a book by its cover. 'Run For Your Life' asks questions about the true value of friendship; the need for strength in the face of adversity; and taking responsibility for personal choices.

The story itself is set in the late 1960s and involves English Schoolboy Woolcott who has the misfortune one day to discover Istvan Szolda (Soldier) fending off some bullies. On making Soldier's acquaintance, Woolcott is unable to shake his new friend. Complications arise when Woolcott's unwanted new friend Soldier, a Hungarian refugee, overhears two Hungarian men planning an assassination. In Soldier's attempts to discover more, Woolcott is drawn into a web of intrigue and drama that puts both their lives in peril.

There is drama, tension and humour in this skilfully-written book and it deserves to be known by a wider audience. Gripping and fast-paced, 'Run For Your Life' has a concise, direct style that boys of 10-12 will find very engaging. It surprises and disappoints me that this book has been out of print for so long. Perhaps, with the recent DVD release of the original television series, publishers will rediscover this tremendous story.

A decent chase thriller

The author, a pseudonym for the great Lionel Davidson, has created a mini-thriller for the young adult reader. Comparable but scaled down to his fabulous ^Rose of Tibet^ and ^Kolymsky Heights^, it chills with convincing details as the teen protagonists use ingenuity and stamina in fleeing their pursuers, and equal ingenuity by the pursuers in following them. The ending is very abrupt, almost a deus eex machinaa, with very little resolution or explanation of what was really going on. Still, the race is the thing.

As the American Civil War raged on, Louisiana's Sarah Morgan complained to her diary, "Oh! if I were only a man. Then I could don the breeches, and slay them with a will!" Though Morgan never did "don the breeches," in All the Daring of the Soldier, historian Elizabeth D. Leonard reveals that many women did. Leonard recounts the stories of dozens of women who joined the war effort, such as Richard Anderson, a.k.a. Amy Clarke, who fought with her Confederate cavalry regiment at the battle of Shiloh. Other women served as "Daughters of the Regiment," doing everything from serving as mascots and nurses to bearing regimental colors in battle and even fighting in combat. Still others engaged in espionage, such as Elizabeth Van Lew, who hid behind a cultivated persona and the nickname Crazy Bet so that she could spy for the Union.

Interesting capsule biographies aside, the strength of this book lies in Leonard's historical analysis. While many historians (and most Civil War novelists) have assumed that women went to war because they were motivated by love--either of men or their country--Leonard is quick to point out that whereas many women did follow the men they loved, and that others were sincere patriots, many others were motivated by economic need or even the desire for adventure and a wider range of opportunity than 19th-century society allowed them. At the core of this well-researched investigation into the role of women in the Civil War armies is a sensitivity to the plight of Victorian-era women. Leonard (Yankee Women) notes that "domestic service continued in the late nineteenth century to represent the primary waged occupation for women." It's no wonder, then, that a few intrepid women decided that the war offered them a better chance to be all that they could be. A Colby College history professor, Leonard has plowed through archives to bring readers the stories of dozens of women who served in both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. Some were spies, but many more adopted men's names, dressed in men's clothes and lived and fought and died alongside mostly unsuspecting men. One Union general "became outraged when an unnamed sergeant under his command 'was delivered of a baby,' which, he irately noted 'is in violation of all military law and of the army regulations.'" Often, when women were discovered in the ranks, they were accused of being clever prostitutes who enlisted because of the promise of steady business. Leonard dismisses this theory, noting that there was hardly a need for prostitutes to go incognito. Leonard's engaging portraits of these female soldiers are neatly contextualized, and she makes it clear that women enlisted because they were patriots, because they wanted to be near husbands and brothers and, perhaps above all, because they felt the war offered them a chance at autonomy and adventure. A collection of stories about women who spied for the Blue or the Gray or who disguised themselves in male attire to join the Civil War armies. Leonard (History/Colby Coll.) writes of famous documented female spies such as Belle Boyd, who provided intelligence to Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah; Rose O'Neal Greenhow, who reported Union intentions and positions to Confederate general Beauregard at the First Battle of Bull Run; Antonia Ford, who cultivated a friendship with Union general Stoughton while feeding information to Jeb Stuart that led to the ambush and capture of Stoughton, his troops, and supplies; Elizabeth Van Lew of Richmond, an antislavery Southerner who provided much underground intelligence to Yankee officers and tended Union POWs in Libby Prison; and Pauline Cushman, who scouted and spied for the Union Army of the Cumberland. Since the war was fought mostly on Southern soil, most female spies were Southerners who knew the land and people. Leonard offers many tales of women dressing as men who tried to follow their husbands or lovers into recruiting regiments where physical exams were minimal or nonexistent and who would mix with teenage ``beardless boys.'' They were attracted by generous bounty money and steady pay that was much higher then what they could earn as domestics, but patriotism and desire for adventure also played a role. Most were discovered eventually but were treated with traditional chivalry; even spies were usually simply discharged and sent home. Other women performed valuable servicesnursing, washing, cooking, and smuggling letters, scarce medicines, and supplies in their ample clothingbut were tagged with the derogatory term ``camp followers.'' Leonard also cites heroic female performances on the battle-fronts: women treating wounded, seizing fallen colors, and taking up arms themselves. Excellent women's Civil War history book

I am the author of "Memories of Maggie" and "Potpourri Of War" so I readily ordered this new book to learn more about the women who served during the Civil War.
"All the Daring of the Soldier" was excellent. It brought forth more women than I was even aware of who did so much for their country during the Civil War. Elizabeth D. Leonard should be proud of the work she put into her research and writing. This book should be a welcomed item to anyone's collection but especially for students to learn more women's history.
I only have one complaint. There was no mention of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker who also served during the Civil War and was ultimately the only woman to date to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for her actions during the war. I hope this was just an oversight on the author's part.
BUT believe the rest of this book is wonderful!

Is it Worth it?

Though the beginning of the book was a little dry, it continues to improve. It's greatest strength is the use of personal stories and accounts of those who actually knew the women.

As the book begins, many women are mentioned who had small, some might say even insignificant, role in the Civil War. This part is the book is the more dry area, but when the author, Elizabeth D. Leonard, begins to focus on the five most prominent women who helped to illicit information from the enemy, it again improves. This style of writing continues throughout the book, first mentioning several women whom not much is known about, then sharing the story of a well-known Unionist or Confederate female. Another strength of this book is the information that one can learn. I was surprised at some details and statistics provided. For instance, many women who brought information across enemy lines were able to do so through the use of their clothing as a means for hiding letters and even entire army uniforms. One woman strung hats and boots underneath her hoop skirt and kept letters in her hair. The statistic that six women were able to kept their pregnancy a secret (until delivery) while being enlisted under a male alias is shocking.

This book provides another look at women in the Civil War. Many believe, incorrectly, that only a few females were involved with either the Union or Confederate cause. As this book proves, however, that is not the case.

Overall, this book has an equal amount of interesting aspects, as well as dry moments. The "good" parts, however, are worth reading the book in its entirety.

Reading For Fun Instead Of Duty

What impresses me about this book is that the critics involved write about what pleases them instead of what they think is the *correct* thing to read. Kurt Vonnegut, who has taken it on the chin from many reviewers lately, gets a warm appreciation from Dave Eggers. And Bret Easton Ellis gets a non-poisonous review (not that I like Ellis all that much, but it's nice to see a dissent from the conventional wisdom for a change.) A few writers get dissed: Michael Crichton is quickly chopped into hamburger, and Edwidge Danticat and Alice Walker are surprisingly (but accurately) dismissed as non-entities. Saul Bellow gets a mixed review. My favorite old white guy, Philip Roth, gets a positive write-up and I learned about possible new authors to read like Geoff Nicholson. One limitation: the exclusion of translated works leaves out a master like Milan Kundera. And any collection that includes the hack John Grisham and leaves out the wonderful Scott Turow needs a reality check. (The "See Also" paragraphs that follow each main review help make up for some of the most obvious exclusions.) Well worth your time.

great... both an indispensible tool and a DAMN good read

this is what I needed! and so many other people too... a place to run when someone talks glibly about some author... you want a basic, opinionated take on them, and you want a list of the person's books -- but with a sub-list of the ones that are notable and should be read. AND you want the word on "what is the ONE book by them that you should read if you were only to read one?"
I just wish to god they had this for popular music. and maybe they're doing it. would be a harder task.

Now, if they would just get a copyeditor...

Like any "guide" this expansive, there are plenty of omissions and controversial assessments; that's the point. You are allowed to agree or disagree or argue with the choices. But what's shocking are the number of typos contained in this supposed reference book. There seems to be at least one error per page, from A.M. Homes' age (they've added ten years) to Brett Easton Ellis with two t's to retitling the new Denis Johnson book "The Name of the Word." (It's actually The Name of the World.") I don't blame the editors; the fault lies with the publisher and their staff I would guess. Otherwise, this is a lot of fun.

laugh out loud funny.

I read this book in 3 days and it made me laugh so much I cried. About a single mum living in a large house and has a lodger who seems, well.... a bit of a jack the lad. Stella watches Frank (the lodger) having some undetached fun and also wants a bit of the action. I would describe this novel as a very modern love story. Scene with Stella and her past love making catching up with her is priceless.

Hysterically funny!

I picked up this book in Greece a few years ago and I couldn't wait for it to be availabe to buy in the states! It is hysterical. Stella is the most likeable character I have read in a long time. I have bought copies for all my friends and it is everyone's favorite book.

Okay this is not LITERATURE. But it is a romp of a read especially in the doldrums after Christmas.. Or any other doldrums. My life is nowhere like hers, nor is it like anyone I know but i found it a charmingly naughty sometimes read that had me wishing for another by her.

When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow died on March 24, 1882, at the age of seventy-five, he was the most celebrated poet in the English-speaking world, Not only was he America's first professional poet, but, after his death, he was the first American to have his bust placed in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey in London, England.
Longfellow was an unsurpassed master in his use of musical language. Few poets could match his sonorous and rhythmically sensual use of words. His poetry is rarely abstract, and the vivid, descriptive imagery and the narrative form of verse he favored make it pleasing to read and follow. His subject matter touched on American life and its verities, be it legendary heroism as in "Paul Revere's Ride" or in the honest, upright, and hardworking man of "The Village Blacksmith."

The best introduction to one of America's best loved poets.

When I was producing a video biography of Longfellow for Macmillan/McGraw-Hill in 1992, I needed a one-volume selection of Longfellow's poetry, and this book did the job very nicely. It includes Longfellow's best-known poems as well as two others that were never published during the poet's lifetime but must be classed with his finest work. The introduction by Lawrence Buell provides a useful biographical sketch and a thoughtful discussion of why Longfellow--the most famous American of his time--is not more widely read today. Buell's observations may get you thinking about this schoolbook poet in a different way.

I decided to reacquaint myself with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow because of a remark I read in another book. It was commented in this other reading that Henry in his day was America's most read and beloved poet and eventually supported himself on his poetry.

I truly admire any poet who has been able to make a living writing poetry. I only know of a few: Robert Service, Rod Mckuen, Rudyard Kipling, possibly Ogden Nash, John Milton - most poets had a day job. They have traditionally been school teachers or college professors, ministers and preachers.

Walt Whitman is a typical sad story of a struggling poet - so too is Edgar Allen Poe. So when I read someone who actually made a living at that art, I am curious to say the least. All else said to the contrary they must have had something.

I sent for this nice little volume. The book itself is very nice with one of those little "strings" to mark the pages - like in a bible.

I've read the entire book aloud. I enjoy reading poetry aloud. I read my poetry aloud at bed time. My wife takes out her hearing aids and is snoring while I'm inflecting and projecting to my heart's content.
This is a wonderful collection with lots of old favorites ... Paul Revere's Ride, Song of Hiawatha, The Courtship of Miles Standish, The Village Blacksmith and The Wreck of the Hesperus. But since I never sat down before and read a whole volume of Longfellow there were many that I had never read or heard. The Children's Hour is famous but I had never read it before - also The Cross of Snow - two very beautiful poems.

The fact that Longfellow was so popular back in 1888 leads me to think that Americans, on the average, must have been much more intelligent than those mulling around us today. It is a complement to the population of that era that they chose to make this man comfortable in his old age by purchasing his lovely poetry with their hard earned pennies, nickels and dimes.

Longfellow was an historian. Much of his writing is historical. He is also clearly a classical poet - writing in the tradition of Dante, Milton, Edmund Spenser and the like. His poetry is excellent. It sings. Get this volume and read it out loud to yourself (or to someone else, for that matter. It is wonderful. You don't have to understand every line - just listen to it.

He also seemed to be a very nice man - one whose life I intend to explore more deeply.

Where have you gone, Mr. Longfellow?

Longellow is the poet of the American public school. 'Evangeline' 'The Courtship of Miles Standish' 'Paul Revere's Ride' ' The Village Blacksmith' ' 'A Psalm of life' and others. His reputation in the nineteenth century was great and overwhelming. Yet his reputation in the realm of poetry today is not with those artists of the canon, Tennyson and Browning in England, and Whitman and Dickinson in the United States. Perhaps it is because his poems are taken to be not inventive enough linguistically. Perhaps it is because the very thing many have praised him for his musicality seems today to be less than the irregular music of a Hopkins or Dylan Thomas.

In any case in Longfellow one will find sound solid lines, a certain moral stance , a kind of American integrity. For someone like myself reading Longfellow is a nostalgic trip and a new perspective on what I read so long ago. He has much to give even if it is not quite at the highest poetic level.
