This is fannish as all get-out. Greenwald actually met bimbos with Brandon Branna, one of the main Star Trek writers! He drank vodka with Kate Mulgrew, the only female starship captain in any ST series! He was treated curtly by Patrick Stewart, aka Jean-Luc Picard! Less gushily reported and therefore more satisfying are Greenwald's less expected visits with ST fans in other countries. Each group of them finds subtexts in the overwhelmingly popular series that support their worldview. Although German Klingon fanciers will not surprise any fan with a stereotypical vision of Aryans (and of Worf's people), the Hungarians who meet at an American fried chicken franchise in Budapest prove strangely moving in their ability to find inspiration in a future of global, if not universal, peace. Well written and well paced, this is good reading despite the gush, as well as loaded with backstage scenes, though probably not enough to satisfy deep-dyed Trekkers' appetites for them. A wonderful contribution to Gene Roddenberry's vision

This book is full of very useful insights into the effect Star Trek has had on humanity in the last 32 years. By reporting on Star Trek's impact on so many different cultures, Jeff Greenwald is following in Gene Roddenberry's footsteps. He is helping his readers see not just themselves, but the diversity that exists among Star Trek's fans world-wide.
Patrick Stewart is quoted in the book as saying how very valuable it is to be able to put yourself in someone else's shoes, to see their point of view (not just your own). If this book helps this happen for its readers, it will have served a very valuable purpose - not just providing a behind the scenes look at Star Trek, but a view of how people of other cultures see themselves as well.

The ultimate book on Star Trek Fandom

Jeff Greenwald observes and interviews various Star Trek authors, producers and TV Stars as well as Star Trek Fans all around the world. What is the result of that? The answer is: amazing! I can't remember having read anything like it before!
First of all, he has a very fluent, easy-to-read writing style. You just sit there, flip over one page after another and get sucked into the book. After ten pages, I was unable to put the book aside for anything else but work, food or sleep. But the book does not stop there. Jeff Greenwald has written a very thoughtful, very reflective book on the Star Trek Fandom. No matter which facet he meets - may it be authors, producers, stars or the common Trekker - he shows a insight about how Star Trek gives each personal dream and hope a shape.
Jeff tells us those stories of hopes and dreams - but always with a twinkle in his eyes, ready to catch remarks of people who may have hopes, but are as well capable to laugh about themselves.
Oh boy - I waited long for such a book!

The best overview of the worldwide Star Trek Phenomena!

In this unprecedented view of how and why Star Trek has captured the psyche of the entire world, Jeff Greenwald has gone where no author has gone before. He has taken an objective view of the Star Trek craze (making this book a must read for not only ST fans, but for everyone!) from the far east to America. With unprecedented access to the sound stages of ST First Contact and Paramount's Hart building (where the writers weave their magic), this book is a ST fan's dream come true. Only after reading Mr. Greenwald's "away missions" can people truly understand how a 35 year old American-made TV show can capture the minds and hearts of people all over the world. Interview with cultural icons such as the Dalai Lama, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Arthur C. Clarke, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, and others help make this book the superb creation that it is. Make sure to eat a good meal and have a long nap before attempting to read "Future Perfect," because once you p! ick it up you won't be able to do anything else until you finish it. Mr. Greenwald's clear and concise method of writing allows you to dive into the book, only to resurface once you have read it in its entirety. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it ended. I could have easily read another 500 pages full of the author's amazing insights and sense of humor! Copywrite 1998.

Recovery Bible

The work of Slatter and Lovett covers all aspects of company turnaround and can be, with some restrictions, used as a valuable help during crisis management.
This model stresses an overlap of planning and implementation activities. Crisis management and regular business planning have to be handled simultaneously and a number of generic strategies implemented parallel and vigorously, which pays contribute to the extreme time pressure in a crisis situation.
The model takes a holistic approach by including aspects of leadership and stakeholder confidence, but the author misses mechanisms that allow the flexibility for a basic strategy change as a reaction to an altering environment.
Remarkable is that the workstream of the development of the business plan only is limited to mid stage of the emergency phase. This could be an indication that in Slatter's and Lovett's concept the business plan has a rather static and inflexible structure. If writing the business plan is considered a process that constantly has to be adapted to the changing environment, then the development of the business plan should stretch over all phases of the turnaround process. Also naming the business plan the "Bible of Recovery" implies that the once developed strategies are chiseled in stone.
The static character of the business plan in this model is circumstantiated by the fact that a major element in their business plan is a description of the desired business in its end state, which sets the course of company development on fixed bearings too rigidly and does not allow it to steer around a possible storm.
Like the model of Schaffer and Thomson they constantly review the progress of development in their implementation report, which they call a dynamic living document. This is a functional and important tool to keep the turnaround momentum moving, but they use this information merely as a performance measure to analyze, improve and document the actions, which lead to the achievements of set targets and deadlines, without reflecting, if those targets or strategies are still relevant or need to be adjusted. Therefore this concept cannot fully utilize the essential learning effect, is not flexible in reformulating its strategies, if necessary, and has no mechanisms to institutionalize refinements.
There is only one small contribution in the work of Slatter and Lovett towards strategic flexibility. Under "critical situations during implementation" they mention that an initiative should be amended, if the performance analysis of the implementation report recognizes an underperformance caused by an invalid assumption. They describe this though as a rather isolated event, which has no strong influence on the overall strategic process.
The author considers one reason, why Slatter and Lovett take a more static approach towards the business plan lies in one of the general advantages of a crisis situation, which is the necessity of overlapping of planning and implementation. By this the time gap between planning and implementation is fairly short and the chances that the environment changes drastically are fairly slim although they exist, as the September 11 event showed. This statement counts for the analysis-, emergency- and strategic change phase. But since the concept of Slatter and Lovett also reach into the growth phase until company renewal has been established the author believes it should establish mechanisms, which allow for a strategic change.
The author concludes from the above, that the concept of Slatter and Lovett can be used as a valuable approach towards crisis management , if it is augmented with the constant learning and reformulating principles of Schaffer and Thomson, Pelz and other authors who state that capturing the essential learning effect should be the core achievement of a business plan.

About the Author
Born in Marinsburg, West Virginia in 1937, Walter Dean Myers is one of the premier authors of books for children. His mother died very early in his life-an event that propelled him into experiences that later influenced him to write. It was difficult for Myers' father to raise eight children alone, and eventually, a nearby couple, Herbert and Florence Dean, took in three-year old Walter and moved to Harlem, New York. "Harlem became my home and the place where my first impressions of the world were set," says Myers.
As a child, Myers went to school in his neighborhood and attended bible school almost every day of the week. Myers had a speech impediment which made communicating difficult for him, and often found himself in fights, defending himself against kids who taunted him. After a while, one of this teachers suggested to his class that they could write something to read aloud. Young Myers began writing poetry to give voice to his thoughts and feelings, and at age sixteen, won a prize in an essay contest and a set of encyclopedias for a long narrative poem. Later, his father bought him a used typewriter, which he used to churn out a seemingly endless stream of stories.
Along with the many things he was discovering about himself, Myers was also learning how to survive. One day he had the courage to break up a fight between three gang members and a kid who had just moved into the neighborhood. He became a marked man-and felt his life was in danger.
For example, once, he was sitting in the tree in Morningside Park, across from the building he lived in, reading O'Neill's "Mourning Becomes Electra," when some gang members spotted him and surrounded the tree. Myers jumped to theground, flashed a stiletto in order to fend them off, and made a mad dash for his building. He escaped, but he never forgot the incident. Later he enlisted in the army, got married, had a child, went through a turbulent creative struggle, got divorced, got married again-and during all of this, kept writing, whether his work pleased him or not.
But Walter Dean Myers' life is not the story of a tormented, embittered artist. Rather it is the story of a gifted, complex person committed to sharing that gift with young readers. Myers' stories and novels paint a powerful picture of the pressures of growing up on big city streets. Yet, he emphasizes close relationships, trust, and personal growth.
It seems that one of Myers' greatest struggles was to understand what type of writer he wanted to be. As the years passed and his books became more and more popular, Walter Dean Myers came to believe that his work filled a void for African American youths who yearned for positive reading experiences and role models. He frequently writes about children who share similar economic and ethnic situations with his own childhood. "But my situation as a parent did not mirror that of my childhood," he says. "While my parents were quite poor, my children are thoroughly entrenched in the middle class experience. To them African prints go well with designer jeans, pizzas go down easier to a reggae beat, and shopping malls are an unmistakable part of their culture."
It is clear that Myers' understanding of both the world he was raised in and the world of his children allows him to bring an authority to his work that resonates with his young readers. It is one of many attributes that has made him one ofthe most important children's and young adult authors writing today. Among his many honors are two Newbery Honor books for "Scorpions "and" Somewhere in the Darkness," He is also a two-time recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award for "Now Is Your Time!" and "Fallen Angels," In addition, Myers has received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for his contribution to young adult literature.
Myers' novel, "Darnell Rock Reporting," is a warm and humorous story about thirteen-year-old Darnell Rock-a boy who works on his school newspaper. The book is sure to appeal to reluctant readers. Myers' recent picture book, "How Mr. Monkey Saw the Whole World," is a cautionary fable about a watchful monkey who sees that a greedy buzzard gets his comeuppance.
Myer's recent work, "145th Street: Short Stories" (A "Boston Globe-Horn Book" Honor Book) captures the heartbeat of one memorable block in Harlem, New York. These powerful, often gripping stories range from humor and celebration to terror and grief.

Great Book!

The Main Character of my book is Steve. He's thirteen, likes basketball, and collects nickels. His best friend Hi-note is the toughest guy on the block until Steve's parents adopted a thirteen-year-old kid named Earl. Hi-note and Steve try to prove to Earl that they are tough by spray painting the word Visigoths. They tell these teenage guys that's the name of their gang and they always spray paint their gang name on trains. Well what they didn't know about these guys was that they were the Royal Transit Police. The police sent them to court and the judge gave them the choice of spending a little time in jail or work at an old age home. Hi-note, Patti, Earl, and Steve. While they were at the old age home they try to get along with the old people but they are very grumpy. Later on in the book they find out that the reason they are so grumpy is because they keep calling them old folks and not seniors and they keep on helping them like there a child. After they find out that was the only thing wrong with the seniors

The Worst Way To Spend Your Summer Or Is It? Four young black teens from New York are caught by the police spray painting a rail road car and are sentenced to work in an old folk's home for the summer. One of the young boys has been in trouble with the law several times before but finds he has more in common with the seniors from the home than the others. They are forced to be together, none or them liking the circumstances that brought them together; however, as they get to know each other they find their lives are changed. Earl, the boy who has been in trouble before is living with Steve and Steve's parents on a trial basis but wants to have a permanent home. The book is written as if Steve Perry is writing to his journal. If you like good humor mixed with serious problems dealing with old age then you would like this book as I did.

Steve is an only child until one day his parents decide they want to adopt. They discuss it with Steve and he has no objections; he thinks it will be cool to have a little kid looking up to him and following him around. Soon Steve learns that this kid has a criminal record and is thirteen-year-old Earl Goins. Steve doesn't want to look weak or un-cool to Earl so he decides to spray-paint "Royal Visigoths" on an old train, but the whole gang gets caught and is forced to work at Micheaux House. They all learn that there is more to people then meets the eye.

I enjoyed reading this book because I haven't read anything quite like it before. It has a good life-lesson that I think everyone should know and respect. The characters are witty and sarcastic, and I think anyone in middle school would enjoy reading it.

A Lovely and Touching Story

When Abbie Mckenzie was young she dreamed of becoming a lovely lady like her grandmother. She wanted to paint beautiful pictures and become a world famous singer. She even gets a chance to fulfill those dreams when the dashing young doctor hears her singing, falls in love, and offers to take her East and away from Iowa with him. But people's ideals change sometimes. Abbie finds love with poor but steady Will Deal. She gives up everything to move to Nebraska with him. Many obsticals awaited them there but together they made it. Abbie and Will were barely getting by, but their children were as happy as kings. Maybe that's because their lovely mother braught them up "with a song upon her lips and a lantern in her hand". As Abbie Deal grows old, she realizes that none of her old dreams will ever come true for her but they will through her children. And as an old woman, she can look back on her life with a smile. This book is beautiful and touching and will bring tears to your eyes. I recomend this book because I absolutely loved it every time I read it.

Enduring story of a pioneer woman

Like some other reviewers, I read this when I was quite young, and the story of Abbie Deal, who crossed the prairie to settle in Nebraska with her beloved husband Will, left a deep and abiding impression in my heart. Many times I have thought of Abbie Deal's story of strength and survival. She reminds me of my grandmother, who faced her own challenges in the early 1900's in the east Texas piney woods. Abbie, with her long slender fingers, shapely figure, her singing and painting talents, was born in the mid 1800's. Falling in love with Will Deal, she left her small town to travel with him to the uncivilized prairie to raise her family while facing weather disasters, insects, isolation, lack of cultural 'food' and the ever-present threat of disease and death. Could I have lived in a sod shanty or had babies with only a gruff German-speaking neighbor as midwife? Could I have kept my sanity while sweeping locusts out the door in great piles? While perhaps not the most elegant or multi-layered author, Bess Streeter Aldrich earns my respect by her straight-forward style, and by creating many of the most lively, memorable characters ever. One of the most poignant themes is how Abbie over time loses her shapley figure, her slender fingers becoming knarled by hard work, her singing and painting disused and forgotten. Yet how those attributes are 're-incarnated' in the following generations is one of the scenes that bring tears to my eyes every time I read it. If a book can be valued by the number of times that it is recalled in the reader's mind as a source of humor, comfort or warm nostalgia, then this book is among my most cherished few. Get this book, read it, love it. Become part of the community of those of us who have taken this work to our hearts.

A passionate story.

"A Lantern in Her Hand" is such a deep story, that I could only handle reading it in small portions. Each and every time, I would close the book with such sadness in my heart. Abbie worked so hard as a mother and a wife, and sacrificed her dreams and wantings, that it made me think of what my parents might have set aside for me. Her children, when grown, bothered me so much, to think their mother old-fashioned and somewhat senile. If only we can have such fond and cherished memories when we live to be in our 80s. I recommend.

The ex-soldier Longoria, as yet unaware that he's being stalked, goes about his highly regimented routine, striving to better himself at chess while holding down a security job at a crooked Guatemalan parcel service and keeping his small apartment--where he has a collection of photos of his victims--spotless. Hector Tobar's depressing but masterfully-written The Tattooed Soldier is a compelling story of tragedy and revenge, and provides a deep insight into the poverty-stricken lives of immigrants to Los Angeles.
Several background stories, each focusing on a different major character, intertwine to tell the tale of Antonio Bernal. Antonio, a bookish young man from a lower-class family, attends a university in Guatemala. This is where he meets his future wife, Elena; a passionate revolutionary, fearless and irreverent of the government's attempts to quell such actions, Elena worries that the ones she loves will suffer for her actions. One day, a "death squad," with leader Guillermo Longoria (the title's "tattooed soldier"), takes the lives of Antonio's wife and infant son. Forced to leave the country, Antonio moves to Los Angeles, seeking a better life. What he finds there is not opportunity, but rather homelessness and poverty.
Evicted at the start of the book, Antonio and his roommate live on a hill with others like them. Purely by chance, Antonio sees Guillermo again, and works up the courage to confront him.
The true focus of the story, however, is not Antonio; it is everything around Antonio. It seems that everywhere he goes, he sees nothing but poverty and despair. In Guatemala City, there were army groups created to fight freedom of expression. In San Cristobál, there were funerals for babies at least twice a month. Los Angeles is no different, despite the common perception that it is a land of opportunity. "Perhaps they could move to Mexico. Save enough money to move to Mexico or the United States. A place where they could be safe and their daughter, or son, could be educated. A place where you could speak your mind and there were no soldiers on the street." (118) In truth, the soldiers that roam the streets of Los Angeles are fellow immigrants. Everyone must compete for the limited jobs and money in the city, and there is apparently no room for sympathy.
Antonio learns the truth of the world, that revenge against those who have wronged him does not solve anything. He regrets his actions several times in the book, and realizes that the only thing he can do is suffer.
This sense of hopelessness is the book's core. Tobar himself said that, "at its root, The Tattooed Soldier is the story of the conflict between the idea of Los Angeles as a place of unlimited freedom and opportunity, and the truth of the poverty and decay that have come to eat away at the very heart of the city." The fact that immigrants can seemingly do nothing to improve their lives in the U.S. often leaves them no better off than where they were.
A powerful and deep story, The Tattooed Soldier does not give the feeling that everything will be okay. Tobar's incredible presentation of the immigrant's eternal struggle makes this book most definitely worth reading.

A true drama set during the Rodney King Riots in California and in sometime during Guatemala's civil war. It is a story of revenge, tragedy, love and hate.......Tobar is the modern day William Shakespeare who peppers a serious narrative with cultural anecdotes, humor and irony. The story moves you and the ending will leave the reader breathless.

Inspired Reading

This book is inspirational as well as educational by transitioning between Romanticism and Realism. The work challenges the reader to decide whether it refers simply to the prospect of salvation for a man convicted of stealing. Also questions are raised that is it possible that through the naturalistic view that Hugh's theft he can be excused by his unfortunate environment and heredity. Davis is an insightful and thoughtful writer, and this book represents that.

Continuing the sweeping narrative that he began with The House of Rothschild: Money's Prophets, 1798-1848, Oxford University historian Niall Ferguson conjures up a world in which widespread change and utter uncertainty held sway in the place of carefully ordered dynasties and universally observed mores. In the aftermath of the Napoleonic revolution, European Jews had been able to move within dominant societies somewhat more freely. Of no family was this more true than the Rothschilds, whose branches lived in Germany, France, Austria, and England, and whose vast financial empire enabled them to act as diplomats and power brokers throughout the world. Their influence was enormous. When Spain wanted to build a railroad, its ministers approached the House of Rothschild. When the Confederate States of America sought to be recognized by the states of Europe, it sought--unsuccessfully--the Rothschilds' support. When Ferdinand de Lesseps broke ground for the Panama Canal and Cecil Rhodes broke ground for his vast diamond and gold mines in South Africa, Rothschild funds backed them.

Until the 1920s, Ferguson demonstrates, there was almost no economic, technological, or political development in Europe in which the House of Rothschild did not play some role. Ferguson is not only publishing massive works of history at an astonishing rate; he is publishing well-written and controversial books. The Pity of War (Forecasts, Mar. 8) caused a stir by arguing that Britain bore the brunt of the blame for WWI. The completion of his two-volume history of the Rothschild banking empire begins at a high point of wealth, power and civic involvement, with Benjamin Disraeli a close family friend and Lionel Rothschild playing a leading role in gaining Jews the right to sit in Parliament. The book ends with the post-WWII rebuilding of the Rothschilds into a far-flung "mini-multinational." Drawing on thousands of letters from private Rothschild archives, Ferguson does a masterful job of showing how the Rothschild financial empire interacted with the governments of Europe. His account is peppered with countless refutations of previous interpretations and analyses. Yet the larger historical picture is often blurred as Ferguson furnishes blow-by-blow accounts of, for example, the French Rothschilds' ultimately successful decades-long battle against the Cr?dit Mobilier. Readers will be left wanting more analysis of the larger sea change that consigned the Rothschild style of private banking to its current secondary status. And while he follows the senior partners in Britain and France (other houses, in Naples, Vienna and Frankfurt, either closed or simply receded from Ferguson's view), Ferguson sticks to their public deeds and roles, rarely venturing into the personal or the psychological. In this sequel to The House of Rothschild: Money's Prophets 1798A1848 (LJ 10/15/98), Ferguson takes the Rothschild consortium from its zenith in the mid-1800s to the present day. In his view, the fundamental lesson of the Rothschild history is that the world evolves; over time, it is difficult to maintain superiority in any area, banking included. (Superiority, of course, is a relative term.) Risk and finance go hand in glove, and as the Rothschild consortium aged, it grew more and more "establishment," formally participating in government affairs. At the same time, it was unable to establish a beachhead on American shores, which ultimately led to its diminished importance in banking on an international scale. For students of economic history, this is a fascinating volume, but other readers will find this hard going. let me begin by saying that i am not in the habit of handing out five stars in my reviews, but this fine book certainly deserves it. i am not quite sure what to make of some of the criticisms leveled at this book in the reviews until now--too many facts, overly exhaustive, too much about continental finances or politics? can a definitive work of non-fiction have too many facts or be too exhaustive? what meaning do the rothschilds have if not in the context of continental politics. i loved every one of those three qualities about this book and, to boot, though it was appallingly well written as well. i found ferguson exhiliratingly (is this an adverb? it ought to be one) willing to assume that i could assimilate mass amounts of data, only sometimes arcane, and still want to follow a linear, only sometimes, social history--that's what definitive works are all about, i think. i applaud ferguson's not dumbing down history. and perhaps that is the difference between those who very much this book and those who didn't. i wanted to read history, and got it; others, perhaps, wanted to read a good yarn and didn't.

Ferguson insults the purchaser of the Penguin Paperback by omitting the bibliography and only providing sketchy footnotes. "Serious scholars" who desire these items are advised to buy the Harcover edition. Other than that, it is a good read

It seems like in order to get access to the Rothchild's papers ...

Purchased this and volume 1 so that I could learn about the Rothschild's rise and their current status. It seems like in order to get access to the Rothchild's papers Mr. Ferguson had to play too much of a cheerleading role. I was hoping for more neutral perspective. I was NOT looking for dirt or about how they exploit people (they are bankers, what do you expect), but I was expecting a more well-rounded approach. There is a lot of information in these two volumes, but I found this one (the 2nd) to be less compelling. It seemed like Mr. Ferguson was trying to finish it and lost interest in the subject. The first volume I would read again, this one I would pass on.
