Hitting above its weight...

Keith Sinclair was a Professor of History at the University of Auckland, a 4th generation New Zealander, and a poet as well. He published what is largely acknowledged as the authoritative and classic history of New Zealand in 1960, and I first read it shortly thereafter. The book remains in print, and although Sinclair died in 1993, it continues to be updated, most recently in 2000, by a fellow academic, Raewyn Dalziel. The update is important since it covers the period of New Zealand's severe economic recession in the `70's, in part as a result of the loss of their preferred trading status with Britain due to its joining the Common Market, as well as the subsequent "liberalization" of NZ's financial markets. My copy stops in 1960, yet provides an excellent account to that date.

The islands that now comprise New Zealand were the largest land masses that were not inhabited by humans until relatively recent times. It was only during the period of the European "Middle Ages" that the Maori, a Polynesian ethic group, discovered and began to populate them, around 1300. Sinclair devotes 25 pages to cover this period. The first European that reached the islands was the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman, 1642. But it took more than a full century, and its "re-discovery," by James Cook, in 1769, that actual settlement was contemplated, and eventually commenced. Politically, New Zealand started out as an Australian colony, but became a colony of Great Britain, directly, in 1841. Even from the very beginning, there was a strand of thought among the country's founding settlers that New Zealand should be a Utopian experiment; these thoughts reached at least some fruition. As for the Maori however, there fate was largely similar to that of the American Indians: loss of land, marginalization, with the attendant issues of drug and alcohol abuse. Sinclair quotes the observation made in 1872, by the English writer, Anthony Trollope, concerning the Maori's future: "There is scope for poetry in their past history. There is room for philanthropy as to their present condition. But in regard to their future - there is hardly a place for hope."

With its exceedingly small population, (less than metropolitan Atlanta today) and despite its isolated setting, security was a major concern. Nonetheless, they proved to be a significant force in many global alliances, serving with "ANZAC" forces at Gallipoli in World War I, and fighting both the Japanese, as well as the Germans, in the North African Western Desert during World War II. During the (American) Vietnam War, I still remember two New Zealand medics, who had been involved in treating Vietnamese civilians, being ambushed on Highway 1, in December 1968.

In terms of Utopian experiments, Sinclair uses a quote from Professor Frank Parsons as an epigraph for his chapter "State Experiments": "New Zealand is the birth place of the Twentieth Century." This chapter is one of the book's best, and most informative. NZ was indeed a pioneer in formulating governmental policies that ensure a fairer and more just society, with attention to the less fortunate. Many of the policies enacted into law during the American New Deal of the 1930's were enacted in NZ in the 1890's, including Social Security. Sinclair also uses as an epigraph, a quote from the great conservative thinker, Edmund Burke, from his Reflections on the Revolution in France: "Government is a contrivance of human wisdom to provide for human wants." Also, NZ was the first country in the world to grant the right to vote to all adult women in 1893. Samuel Butler was a sheep farmer in New Zealand for a number of years in the 19th century, and his utopian classic, and social satire on Victorian England, Erewhon, was partially based on that experience.

I managed a 10-day trip to South Island in 1980. A repeat visit is long overdue, but, for certain, I will re-read this history, in its updated format, before the re-visit. A 5-star history.

In Secrets, Somalian author Nuruddin Farah has conjured a densely woven tale of betrayal, hidden agendas, and tangled relationships that is both a deeply personal story in and of itself and emblematic of the greater problems that continue to tear his country apart today. As a boy, young Kalaman used to creep into the bed of his childhood playmate, Sholoongo, and the two would engage in secret games of sexual discovery. A quarter of a century later, Kalaman is a businessman in Mogadishu on the eve of Somalia's civil war when Sholoongo arrives unexpectedly from America, bringing with her the reminder of an old, half-forgotten promise.

The secrets start early in Farah's novel: As a child, Kalaman questions even the origins of his own name, wondering if his unusual appellation in a world of Mohammeds and Abdous is an indication that he is not, after all, his father's child. Then there is the question of why his mother seems to dislike Sholoongo, whom his grandfather, Nonno, describes as "a duugan, that is to say, a baby to be buried." If Kalaman's origins are slightly murky, Sholoongo's are mired in mystery. One version has her abandoned by her mother and raised by lions. Whatever the truth of the girl's history, it is generally agreed by most people in Kalaman's village that she is probably a witch, and therefore trouble. Certainly Kalaman's mother, Damac, mistrusts her, believing her to have "animal powers" and designs on her son. Farah reveals all this in a tantalizing introductory chapter before fast-forwarding 25 years to Mogadishu in the early 1990s, one week before the official outbreak of civil war; Kalaman, now a successful young businessman, comes home to find the long-lost Sholoongo waiting for him in his apartment. Kalaman's first reaction to his old playmate's reappearance is fear: "There was no way of knowing what her visit might bring forth, what mysteries it might unravel, what manner of disastrous debates it might generate.... From here on out, Farah caroms between past and present, alternating chapters narrated by Kalaman, Damac, Sholoongo, and Nonno as he inexorably unravels a skein of lies, secrets, and corruption. As Kalaman learns the truth about himself and his family, that family's destruction mirrors Somalia's hellish descent into sectarian violence and long-simmering tribal hatreds. In this new novel from the author of Close Sesame, Sardines, and Sweet and Sour Milk (all LJ 5/15/92), Farah tells the story of Kalaman, a young Somali man who seems plagued by the secrets of his childhood sexual acts. His former childhood infatuation, Sholoongo, appears at his apartment one day, and all the memories of what they did together overwhelm him. The author attempts to tie the problems of Kalaman and his family to those of modern-day Somalia, but the result is disjointed and hard to follow. At one point early on, Kalaman's father tells his son that Sholoongo is "as cheap as a popular rag dishing out pornography in the sophisticated idiom of a highbrow program," a comment that seems to sum up the whole novel. Before its independence in 1960, Somalia was the bloody battleground for power between the fading British and Italian empires; in the late 70s it became a staging ground for the cold war maneuvering between the US and the USSR. In 1991, after Somalia's genocidal dictator was overthrown, equally bloodthirsty warlords began vying for control and, tragically, Somalia collapsed into anarchy. Ironically, this racially, ethnically, religiously and linguistically homogeneous people are now controlled by clans and subclans. Unless and until the country confronts its past, Somalians will render Somalia into nothingness.
Nuruddin Farah places responsibility for Somalia's plight on Somalian's themselves: "If you take the Somali nation as a family, the betrayal is no longer that of colonialism, it is no longer from outside, but from within. And the cure must also be found from within."
Farah strives to keep his homeland alive through his writing and his most recent trilogy, culminating in Secrets, is polemic disguised as obituary disguised as parable disguised as local drama.
In Secrets, one family serves as a metaphor for Somalia, itself; a family whose own checkered past and its members failure to understand one another tears apart and destroys their lives.
Kalaman, the protagonist of Secrets, has always wondered about the secrets surrounding his origins, beginning with his own name. For the name, Kalaman, came from the cry of a bird heard at his birth and, as such, is devoid of any sense of history or family heritage. Family heritage, though, is essential to Kalaman, for he was a child who had always been "interested in the origins of things, how rivers came into being and why they ran and where."
As a result of the secrets surrounding both Kalaman and his family, his grandfather, Nonno, cannot die, his mother suffers from violent nightmares and Kalaman's world is filled with an ever-increasing emptiness.
On the eve of Somalia's collapse into anarchy, Kalaman's sensual and demanding childhood sweetheart, Sholoongo, appears in his home and announces her intentions of bearing his child. Her presence incurs the wrath of Kalaman's mother and pulls Kalaman back into a despair-filled past where he disassembles the myth that represents his family and unleashes all of its long-held secrets.
Secrets displays Farah's superb talents to the fullest. The plot is rich, the language sophisticated and exotic without being overwrought. Displaying elements of magic realism, totemic animals drift through scenery, dreams are symbolic, folktales, prophetic. When Kalaman asks Nonno about Sholoongo's own secrets, Nonno gives him the enigmatic reply: "A man shuts himself away in a dark room, raises his index finger, pointing at the ceiling. Reemerging, he challenges the community members to tell him what he did in the dark room. Another man describes accurately what he did in the dark room when alone."
Conceived in violence rather than in love, and ignorant of his own history, Kalaman is a metaphor for Somalia, itself. Sholoongo, who was born a "duugan," a baby to be taken to the desert and buried, represents Somalia's festering, unspoken history and like that history she "lived to haunt the villagers conscience." Sholoongo is the book's catalyst and her arrival brings back an ugly past for each of Farah's characters, yet, once confronted and embraced, this ugliness is transformed.
Nonno tells Kalaman his "undealt-with troubles began the instant he introduced a decisive element of blame-the-other syndrome into his guilt ridden sorrow." Nonno then begins to associate Kalaman even more closely with Somalia: "There are moments in a person's or a nation's life when collapses can be avoided, even if at first they seem inevitable...Kalaman could have brought an end to this rigamarole sooner, if he had been true to his own instincts, if he had been forthrightly frank with Sholoongo herself: the Somali collectivity could have reversed the coming decline. He had no right to blame his parents or Nonno or others for his own failure...Give people a chance to speak their pieces, and many will display their personal and collective hurts: they all see themselves as ill-used by the dictatorship. Press them further into the corner, ask them for their contributions to the struggle against one-man tyranny, and they fall silent, many unable to deny being accomplices in the rain."
Secrets is a magical story, evocative of the beauty and tragedy that is Africa today. Its politics are metaphorical and never intrusive, for Farah is not a politician but a storyteller extraordinaire.
His life-affirming message, however, to the family that is Somalia is clear: Heal your wounds, Sister. Shout your secrets from the rooftops as loud as you can.

A Fine Example of an African Novel

I learned about author Nuruddin Farah while researching contemporary African writers and was immediately intrigued by him. This novel won the 1998 Neudstadt International Prize for Literature which has also been awarded to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Octavio Paz, and this year to David Malouf. Secrets is well-deserving of this prize for a multitude of reasons.
Not many people have read African authors, especially contemporary African authors, and this is a shame. Nuruddin Farah's work is a perfect representation and a very strong introduction to the obscure African literary canon. This is a bold and challanging work--one that will teach readers an awful lot about Somalian life and engage them in a brilliant story, as well.
The story is set in Mogadiscio, Somalia during the horrific civil war, but readers should not let the setting frighten them away. One need not know anything about the conflict in order to enjoy the book. Farah has taken care of all of the details readers require. The plot involves the protagonist Kalaman's experiences upon receiving a visit from a childhood friend Sholoongo who wishes to bear his child. Her mysterious appearance causes Kalaman to confront his past's secrets and discover his own true identity.
Farah's writing almost outshines his own story with its jewel-like descriptions and sensuous, organic details. His poetic and magical writing is engrossing as are his curious characters who are unlike any I have met in other novels. This is a novel that will transport the reader to a particular time and place in Africa and fill it with spellbinding details that are both very real and very magical. Animals have totemic significance and secrets, as the title suggests, are the focus of many, many mysteries in the book. In fact, the word "secret" appears hundreds of times and is used in as many ways in this book. That, in itself, is amazing indeed.
This is a multi-layered, and multi-faceted novel, and its subplots, magical realism, and variety of speakers make this a challenging book, but if you are intrigued with African or are looking for an extraordinary story written in a very unique style, this book will not disappoint you.

Worth the effort!

While this book is about secrets, as its title proclaims, so is it also about family; family and the ties that bind its members sometimes into convoluted knots, sometimes into neat unison. Early in the book we are thrust into the fable-rich nature of this culture where dreams are the life-blood, myths inform decisions and names have significance beyond the obvious.
The central character, Kalaman, is the only son of Somalian Muslim parents. A childhood lover, Sholoongo, returns to Mogadiscio to seek him out and hold him to a childhood promise. This event stirs up a hornet's nest, ` making the family behave like scorpions whose hiding place has been disturbed.' Many old grievances rise to the surface and many previously unanswered questions now demand resolution.
Kalaman embarks on a search for answers by returning to his roots through his own and his family's memory. An undercurrent throughout the book, that runs parallel but submerged, is the civil strife in Somalia. The question asked is whether the breakdown in Kalaman's family is a symbol or a cause of the breakdown in greater society. In trying to make sense of himself, Kalaman, is also trying to make sense of Somalia.
The story is intriguing and whets the reader's curiosity regarding these secrets and what they could be. In the first half of the book, one feels quite bemused as many of the allusions are yet to be explained. Perseverance through this deliberate maze will be amply rewarded as things fall into place in the second half of the book.
Another striking aspect of this book is the convincing way the writer represents the relationships between the different characters. Kalaman's relationship with his grandfather, Nonno, hit a particular chord of recognition with me. It is Nonno that has coloured his life from birth onwards with myth and legend, tradition and values. His grandfather is his touchstone and his security and he cannot imagine `what life would be like if [he] ceased to see Nonno in [his] dreams'. Kalaman too holds a special place in his grandfather's heart and mind. This renders the outcome of the secrets all the more poignant as well as highlighting the tragedy and irony when brother rises against brother.
This story is a universal one but what makes Secrets a special and remarkable read is the beautiful, sonorous, lyrical language. Never have I read a book as rich in metaphor and simile as this. Every phrase is finely crafted yet none seem contrived. The whole flows with a beauty and elegance that is startling. The characters are colourful yet realistic. A strong theme of sexuality sometimes bordering on the erotic runs through their lives and many taboos are transgressed. This all adds to the rich fabric of Secrets, making it a real find.
Farah possesses that rare ability of drawing the reader into the lives he has created until one believes that one is part of the action, indeed thinking the thoughts of the narrator. I only discovered after reading this book that it is the third in a trilogy, the first two being Maps and Gifts. I will certainly be doing my best to find them.

NOT an Omnibus

I purchased this, expecting a complete Jeeves selection, or at least a bunch of Jeeves, and instead, this is only 3 volumes in one. Not even the first three. This book includes only 'The Mating Season', 'The Code of the Woosters' and 'Right Ho, Jeeves'. Very disappointing. And since no one else took the time to provide this information, I'm giving it to you so you won't be misled as I was by the title.

Also, the text is tiny and the margins are large, making the book much larger than it had to be. I'd rather have tiny print right up to the edge of the page, or else larger print in the fatter book. Basically, a huge disappointment. Which I ordered from all the way across the pond.

Delightful! Wodehouse with a soupçon of Laurie

The créme de la créme, the bees knees, the bestest of the best, literarily speaking, are the entrancing and hilarious Jeeves stories penned by P.G. Wodehouse. They are sublime and shimmer with intelligence, keen observation and wit. Plus the foreword by Hugh Laurie (who portrayed young Bertie in the classic Granada series) is delightfully in the same mode of fantastically British supreme self-deprecation to the point of utter and, in the original sense, fabulous, nonsense. If you have a sense of humor, or humour, you will very likely cherish these stories and if you've never read them before, I am desperately, desperately jealous.

From his perch as founding editor of Wired magazine, Kevin Kelly has long been one of the new economy's chief hypesters. In New Rules for the New Economy, Kelly tries to encapsulate the characteristics of this emerging economic order by laying out 10 rules for how the wired world operates. The result is a dizzying, sometimes confusing, but always thought-provoking look at the behavior of networks and their effect on our economic lives. At the root of this network revolution is communication. As Kelly writes: Communication is the foundation of society, of our culture, of our humanity, of our own individual identity, and of all economic systems. This is why networks are such a big deal. Communication is so close to culture and society itself that the effects of technologizing it are beyond the scale of a mere industrial-sector cycle. Communication, and its ally computers, is a special case in economic history. Not because it happens to be the fashionable leading business sector of our day, but because its cultural, technological, and conceptual impacts reverberate at the root of our lives. The "new economy," posits Wired executive editor Kelly in his smart but confusing book, "has three distinguishing characteristics: It is global. It favors intangible thingsAideas, information, and relationships. And it is intensely interlinked." Kelly uses this system of fluid networks to replace traditional linear models of business interrelationships. In one "rule," Kelly unexpectedly suggests that a company's goods become more valuable as their price moves closer "to free"; in another he urges companies to abandon the pursuit of proven successes. If these claims at first appear dubious, closer examination shows that they're not without credibility. In a network economy, he argues, selling technologies cheaply increases supply and spurs demand for valuable services that use these technologies. Relying on proven successes, Kelly says, discourages companies from developing new technologiesAthe linchpin of a rapidly changing network economy. Unfortunately, Kelly builds his case in a haphazard, often overheated way, complete with empty jargon like "re-intermediation." Even when offering the more concrete observation that a network economy means that customersAnot vendorsAoften drive transactions, Kelly can't resist straying into a discussion of privacy on the Net. Perhaps the author intended his jumble to serve as a metaphor for the often overwhelming interconnectivity he describes, but readers will have a hard time working through the muddle and hype. Not for experts, nor for the naively uncritical

I just finished Kevin Kelly's book, New Rules for the New Economy; it is provocative--"trenchant," as it says on the book jacket. I should preface my next remarks by saying that I'm glad I read the book and will recommend it to certain of you. Some of what Kelly says is compellingly true, and of that part, some of it was relatively new when the book was first written. At the same time,...
I guess it is hard to show what you know in relatively few pages. As a writer, Kelly is clearly his own worst enemy. He uses cryptic graphics that sometimes convey a lot, sometimes convey nearly nothing. He writes oddly--his language is often imprecise, and since he is sort of terse, that occasional vagueness is pretty deadly. Often, too, he reduces what he has to say to sound bites. I'm wary of people who do that. They might be smart, they might be covering up dumb. They oversimplify, and usually end up sounding partly goofy. In this case, some of what Kelly says is sufficiently goofy that I don't know whether he is unaware of what has been written, doesn't understand what he has read, or doesn't believe what he has read.
If you know what you are talking about, you are likely to be interesting. I think Kelly might be an interesting guy. He's no academic, but he's an educational omnivore. He shows evidence of having read some serious work in technological forecasting--but evidence, too, of not having read deeply on the subject. For example, he appears to be unaware of much of econometric and psychometric--that is, measurement--literature, and some of his statements make it appear that he is unaware of fairly well-known literature pertaining to diffusion and substitution in high-technology markets. At the same time, he appears to be intellectually and professionally very much in the center of the transformation of our economy from industrial to informational.
I thought the book was thought-provoking. I recommend it primarily for the relative newcomer to information-economy writings, with the caveat that readers will have to identify for themselves facts, opinions, conjectures, overstatements, baloney, and a few really good ideas.

unconvincing about rights an wrongs in net economy

overall a very fascinating and provocative view of things to come, and understandably need not be very accurate. However I was very disappointed when it starts into the rights and wrongs of a net economy. It makes blanket statements like: "In the new order, innovation is more important than price" and "monovation ... is intolerable" This to me reflects only one view as commonly seen in silicon valley esp with regards to microsoft, and the author merely parrots these views as facts...

About the Author
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.

After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.

Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

The Chocolate Room. The Chocolate River runs across the stage, surrounded by trees and pipes. All enter as scene opens.

AUGUSTUS GLOOP: I’m tired! It seems like we’ve been turning left, turning right, turning left, and turning right again for a whole hour or so. When are we going to eat? I’m hungry! I want to eat right now! Do you all hear me? Now!!

CHARLIE: Did you notice that we’ve been going downward for the longest time, Grandpa Joe?

GRANDPA JOE: Yes, Charlie, I think I heard Mr. Wonka say that we were going underground and that all the most important rooms in his factory are deep down below the surface.

CHARLIE: I wonder why?

GRANDPA JOE: Well, I think he said that there wouldn’t be nearly enough space for them up on top. He said that the rooms we are going to see are enormous. Some are supposed to be larger than football fields!

WILLY WONKA: Here we are everybody! This is the Chocolate Room. This room is the nerve center of the whole factory. It’s the heart of my whole operation!

AUGUSTUS GLOOP: Uhh . . . I don’t see anything but that old river over there. Where’s the food? I’m hungry!

MRS. GLOOP: And just look at those enormous pipes over there. There must be ten or eleven of them. I wonder what they’re for?

CHARLIE: Gee, Mr. Wonka, what’s wrong with your river? It’s all brown and muddy-looking.

WILLY WONKA: Nothing wrong with it, my boy! Nothing! Nothing at all! It’s all chocolate! Every drop of that river is hot melted chocolate of the finest quality. The very finest quality. There’s enough chocolate in there to fill every bathtub in the entire country! And all the swimming pools as well! Isn’t it terrific? And just look at my pipes! They suck up the chocolate and carry it all away to all the other rooms in the factory where it is needed! Thousands of gallons an hour, my dear children! Thousands and thousands of gallons!

VERUCA SALT [Screaming as she looks over the edge of the river]: Look! Look over there! What is it? He’s moving! He’s walking! Why, it’s a little person! It’s a little man! Down there behind one of the pipes!

[Everyone rushes to the edge of the river to get a better look]

CHARLIE: She’s right, Grandpa! It is a little man! Can you see him?

GRANDPA JOE: I see him, Charlie!

[All now shout in turn]

MRS. GLOOP: There’s two of them!

MR. SALT: My gosh, so there is!

MRS. BEAUREGARDE: There’s more than two! There’s four or five!

MR. TEAVEE: What are they doing?

MRS. GLOOP: Where do they come from?

VIOLET BEAUREGARDE: Who are they?

CHARLIE: Aren’t they fantastic?

GRANDPA JOE: No higher than my knee!

CHARLIE: Look at their funny long hair! They can’t be real people!

WILLY WONKA: Nonsense! Of course they are real people! They are some of my workers!

MIKE TEAVEE: That’s impossible! There are no people in the world as small as that!

WILLY WONKA: No people in the world as small as that? Then let me tell you something. There are more than three hundred thousand of them in my factory! They are Oompa-Loompas!

The Best Children's Book of All Time

Along with his other classic, "James and the Giant Peach", Roald Dalh's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" stands at the top of the heap when it comes to children's books. This is a pure classic of imagination, storytelling and magic. Far superior to the film (where Willy Wonka becomes the title character), the book tells the story from Charlie Bucket's point of view. Charlie, who lives with his four ancient grandparents and his mother in a one-room house, is the kind of child who can only dream about his future, since his family has barely enough money to survive. When the Wonka chocolatier announces that five golden tickets to visit the aged factory have been carefully tucked inside chocolate bars the world over, Charlie's dreams are suddenly wide open. He stumbles on some money in the street, purchases a chocolate bar and is thrust into the limelight beccoming one of the five lucky vistors. The rest of the tale is one of scrumptous folly and nerve-wracking sentiment, highlighted by magical workers (the one and only Oompa Loompas), the etheral Willy Wonka, a host of loony characters - both adults and kids - and a thrill ride in a factory where time stands still and also rocks forwards, backwards, sideways and then some! It's a classic tale of the triumph of good over evil, generosity over greed and family over fair-weathered friends. Sure to be enjoyed by children of all ages, adults included, this is the best children's book ever written - and deserves prominent place in every child's library.

Fabulous . . . but look for older printings

My absolute favorite as a child and newly beloved by my kids. ONE CAUTION . . . the illustrations in the current version by Quentin Blake are highly inferior to the ones in the original printing by Schindelman. The originals convey Dahl's twisted, almost gothic vision much more richly. These illustrations (and I think some accompanying text) are distinctly non-PC vis. the Oompa-Loompas, but, especially if you are using this as a "read-to-me" book, this actually provides a teachable moment. Definitely get this book for your kids, but, for a more fulfilling experience, seek out a used version pre-1988 or so.

A fine book for young children

Not too sweet, not too tart, this book gently, humorously, and cleverly, but unmistakably messages children to be kind, not greedy, not selfish, not rude, and not addicted, whether to food, power, or entertainment, while telling an amusing fantastic tale in which comeuppance is delightfully doled out and virtue is rewarded. A valuable story for all children, both good kids and insufferable brats.

Song Lee, his Korean-American classmate, is determined to promote a reconciliation between Harry and his nemesis, Tattletale Sidney. Everyone (except Sidney) is anxious because Harry has to earn one more ant sticker in order to join them on a field trip to a pond later in the week. Sidney works hard to sabotage Harry's chances?but Song Lee leads the way to keep Harry on the roster. A master of mediation, she is also willing to partner Sidney on the bus trip. Once at the pond, Harry falls in, and the class and readers share the feeling that it serves him right since he is seeking revenge against Sidney. Again, Song Lee saves the day. The ending is satisfactory, and during the children's shenanigans, readers learn several facts about insects. Gr. 2^-3. The antics of Room 2B continue in this humorous school story. Harry must behave for the next week, or he won't be able to go on the class trip to the local pond to study water life. But when Sidney tattles on Harry's friend, Song Lee, Harry plans to get his revenge during the class trip. His plan backfires, and Harry, instead of Sidney, falls into the pond. When he climbs out, leeches are stuck all over his body. Song Lee comes to the rescue and saves the day. Frank Remkiewicz's cartoonlike black-ink sketches are well suited to the comic story. Although Song Lee's speech pattern seems stereotypic at times, independent readers will enjoy this chapter book, which is written in short, simple, chatty sentences. April Judge

About the Author
Suzy Kline, the author of nineteen previous Horrible Harry books and four books about Song Lee, lives in Willington Connecticut with her husband, Rufus. Suzy and Rufus have been married for thirty-eight years. They met in the state where they both grew up: California. Suzy grew up in Berkeley and Rufus in Sacramento. Suzy graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in European history. She met Rufus at the Davis campus while attending that campus for a year. They got married and lived in different places, including Canada, before settling into Connecticut, the state they now call home.

Suzy taught in 5th and 6th grades at Shannon Elementary School in Richmond, California for 3 years, and 2nd and 3rd grades at Southwest Elementary School in Torrington, Connecticut for 24 years before retiring this past June. She now enjoys writing full-time and visiting schools and libraries. The couple share their home with two cats, Teeter and Hoag. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Emily, and four grandchildren: Jake, Kenna, Gabby and Saylor. A fifth grandchild is due in September, 2006. Suzy's mother just turned 96. She dedicated her most recent book, Horrible Harry Takes the Cake to her.

Suzy and Rufus enjoy attending UConn football and basketball games, and Suzy uses the UConn library as a reference for her writing facts.

A Reading Field Trip

This is a very funny book The author has a very unique style of writing. It is about a boy named Harry, who behaves poorly it is funny. Harry has to be good for one school day or get one ant sticker the stickers late you go on trips on not or he does not get to go on the field trip to the swamp. The characters are Song Lee, Harry, and Sidney. Harry gets in lots of trouble because he pretends to smokes and fuels around . But Harry has friends so if he gets in trouble, he has them to back him up. I would recommend this book to kids between the ages of 8-10 years old. It is a very funny book.
