Get swept up in the Christmas Magic

Okay, when Christmas comes around, most people think of the mob scene that is Christmas shopping. However, in this easy, fun, and over-much-too-soon read, the spirit and the miracle of Christmas can be lived. The story of Noella and Tom is destined to become a classic, even though I don't believe that it's well-know as of yet. Hopefully that will change. Anyway, this is truly a great read and I hope that you will enjoy it too.

A love story to renew your belief in Santa!

This is a short book, but one of the most charming and magical Christmas books I've read in many a year! Taking place in Chicago, it's about two people who have quite differing views on the reality of Santa Claus, and how those beliefs pulls them apart and ultimately brings them back together again. I think it ranks right up there with O'Henry, and "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus". An easy read that is over much too quickly and will become a book that's read every Christmas season. I fell in love with it! (And have sent copies as gifts to people ---- it's that good!)

Northwestern University journalist professor Noella Wright invites highly regarded newspaper reporter Tom Douton to provide a lecture to her students. Cynical Tom, who champions the working class, refuses to step into the fantasy world of academia until Noella erodes away his reluctance.

When they actually meet, he begins to fall in love with the rosy-colored professor, who is his diametrical opposite in outlook. Their relationship grows until Noella begins to wear a pendant that she insists was given to her as a child by Santa Claus. He refuses to be associated with an educated lunatic and ends their relationship. Needing an article for his part of the newspaper's annual Christmas edition, Tom flies to the Black Forest in Germany to learn more about the heritage of the holiday. His plane crashes and he is mysteriously rescued even as Noella is willing to suspend her beliefs in order for them to find happiness together.

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE may not be quite THE GIFT OF THE MAGI, but fans of seasonal romances will devour this interesting (though far-fetched) tale. The lead protagonists may be total opposites in perspective, but share much in common, which is why their relationship seems plausible. The story line is clearly and purposely a grand canyon of a stretch. However, fans of Yuletide romance who suspend reality for a few hours will simply enjoy Jerry B. Jenkins' fantasy love story that leaves no one left behind when it comes to feeling good.

Great Read-Aloud for the 6-10 crowd

I began reading this book aloud to my daughters, ages 6 and 7. I was very impressed with the quality of writing, and the plot held the attention of all three of us. The best read-alouds are the ones in which the children beg for "one more chapter" and the adult reader enthusiastically complies. This book met both criteria.
The most impressive aspect of this book was its ability to be a very upbeat, positive story while not shrinking away from the sad details of poverty. The family was uncomfortable and sometimes sad in the midst of poor housing, a starvation diet, and ill health, while still enjoying the stability and joy of an intact family. It also has a wonderful (but slightly unbelievable) happy ending.

Nice children's book with a happy ending!

This is a nice story about a young girl who yearns for a home that she can call her own. Janey travels with her father and stepmother to wherever her father can find seasonal work.Her most valued possession is a Blue Willow plate that belonged to her mother, who died when she was young. Finally the family settles in a place where Janey makes friends, but it is inevitable that they will have to leave when there is no more work. When her mom falls ill, Janey departs with her precious plate. This story has a happy ending where good triumphs over bad, and there is a great focus on the love between family members. It's a little sappy, but we can all use that kind of ending now and then

Thought Provoking

I enjoyed reading this book with my 8 year old daughter. It is a very touching story about a family who lives on the move and does not have many of the things that families take for granted...like a real home, friends, the reassuring familiarity of school and daily routines. It is a thought provoking look at a very different sort of life. I think it made my daughter appreciate some of the things she just assumed that everyone has. It's an advanced read. More of a book to read together as the words are somewhat difficult and the storyline sometimes needs some explanation. But the characters are wonderful and good triumphs over evil in the end. We love a happy ending! I'm sure we will read it often over the years.

A Good Book for a Budding Engineer, and Good Adult-Child Activity

Paper airplanes hold a universal appeal for boys and girls, and this book helps them understand how they work. Byron Barton's line drawings illustrate Seymour Simon's lucid explanation of basic aerodynamics. This is not a book of step-by-step directions for making many types of airplanes, but rather a series of experiments to help the reader understand why the planes fly the way they do. This creates the opportunity to adapt a few basic basic airplane styles with the knowledge of why their changes in shape, weight, and stabilization affect the flight of the craft. In the process the reader will also learn a little about how real airplanes are designed.

This is an outstanding book for budding scientists and engineers to read alone, and it also makes an engaging adult-child activity. It's best suited for elementary ages, although a middle school audience would probably enjoy it too.

Best All-In One Las Vegas Book I Have Found!

Great Book! nice size, easy to carry with you when in Las Vegas. The best overview of Las Vegas I have found (I have them all). Lots of detail in this book that are not in the others, even includes a section on outside the Vegas area for day trips (Hover Dam, Area 51, Lake Mead, & many more). Great sections on Accommodations, Restaurants & Buffets, Night Life, Adult Entertainment, Art Culture, Gambling, History, Comps, Weddings, Casinos, & much more. Reads easy like a good magazine, lots of nice color pictures. Detailed maps also included. The only book you will need. I reccomend highly.

Especially appropriate for Christian families

I very much appreciate Dave Ramsey's putting financial matters in the context of virtuous behavior. This is not just a "get out of debt" book or a "make real money" book. It is a book that reminds its readers how many of us stray from fiscal health, suckered in by the 'race to get ahead and then fall behind' values common to the vast majority of Americans - materialism, status, name brands, immediate gratification, antagonism, impermanence, gluttony, lack of responsibility, even lack of contentment. Ramsey knows all too well that when it comes to fiscal restraint and good money habits, this is not a virtuous society. He recommends solid values to counteract the mainstream of American life - patience, delayed gratification, humility, cooperation, peace, communication, contentment and, of course, paying CASH. I wholly applaud this philosophy.

But, merely as a qualifier, I do want to let the prospective reader know that Mr. Ramsey's work is not secular. Bible passages, a Christian perspective and religious messages (such as suggesting prayer and counsel with clergy) set the tone much of the way, and the book is geared (not entirely but mostly) toward traditional and fairly conventional nuclear families.

As a more daring and thorough departure from those seemingly ubiquitous American go-getter values that lure so many into dire straits (such as 'the more you buy the more you save'), I can heartily recommend the popular classic "Your Money or Your Life."

Consumer debt has long been a problem of most americans. The writer is very explicit about those things which cause us to go into consumer debt.

One of the things he addresses is greed, not having the patience to wait

for the money in our hand to purchase items. I am a baby boomer and our generation has been known to want things microwave quick. This book addresses the dangers and pitfallsof that thinking. It will set you free from stinking thinking!

The peripatetic urgency, Buddhist catchphrases and casual prose of On the Road (1957) and Dharma Bums (1958) made Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) the star of the Beat generation. Kerouac's "craft of spontaneous prose" (in Charters's words) let him use his letters as rough drafts for some of his autobiographical fiction. Devotees of those novels can troll for their favorite episodes among Kerouac's complaints, requests, loans, repayments, reports, retorts, rebukes and resolutions. "[W]hen I write a book it's just a chapter in the whole story," a 1960 missive to Neal Cassady explains, "but there wd be no literature in the world safe to say i would rather read than my own remembrance of things." Editor Charters (also Kerouac's biographer) uses her annotations and commentary to make the sometimes hasty, expressive missives cohere as an account of the novelist's life. A first volume of letters appeared in 1995; this second starts with the publication of On the Road and continues almost to the day Kerouac died. The years 1957-1960, the height of Kerouac's career, occupy more than half the volume. Later letters record his struggle to care for his ailing mother, his efforts to finish his later books and his troubles with money and health: "I drink more than ever, my hands tremble, I can't type." Frequent addressees and subjects include Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg ("I still think he's a false prophet, sheep's clothing and ravening wolf"). One of America's Best

It was always an annoyance to Jack that he wasn't considered one of America's "major" writers and hopefully the belated interest in the last years have done much to put that to rest. Kerouac was not only On the Road and the Dharma Bums. He wrote many wonderful novels... And some of his poetry, especially his haikus, I personally feel were top notch, little Emily Dickinson (as he himself would put it) gems. But what a sad, funny book this is! Boy, has any writer's decline ever been so well documented by himself? Jack certainly was a mess in the end, and I'm sure even he appreciated the Celine-like quality of his descent. "I'm fat, dejected, ashamed, bored, pestered and shot." -Dec. 1959. "Now look at me, I big [yes, I big] happy international wreck." -Dec. 1961. But fiesty: "I'm an artist, old-fashioned, devoted." -March 1957. But, Lord how sad! "And the months roll by, and turn into years..." -Jan. 1962. If anyone has ever been to Lowell, I feel you can appreciate the works even better. To think that Jack spent his latter years in a split-level home on a suburban street is in itself fantastically weird! The ricochetting back and forth between Florida and the Northeast becomes a maddening yearly migration. But what other major writer ever got a kick out of ordering the Encyclopedia Britannica? And actually sitting around and reading it? Out in the fenced-in, well-shaded yard? Sipping boilermakers? "I like it, I like it, I tell you I like it Literature." -Dec. 1965.

Good book. I knew that Jack had his problems later in his life but this book really shows that he got off track in the late 50's rather than the 60's. This book reads real fast in that you can't put it down. It reveals the relationships that Jack had with the other Beat Poets among other people. I recommend this book to all interested in Kerouac and the Beat Generation.

First, the recommendation is to read the companion book, and predecessor, Selected Letters: 1940 - 1956, before starting this one. Both books are really two volumes of the same story.

Those familiar with Kerouac's writing will recognize the characters, scenes and events from the letters as the basis for his groundbreaking novels. Via his letters, you get the unvarnished versions of the later quasi-fictional accounts (and the legend aside, Kerouac's novels were quite polished in their own way - no syllable written by accident). However, these letters (and the excellent non-intrusive editing/comments by Ann Charters) serve as the best biography (auto-biography) written about Kerouac (and I've read them all). Perhaps no person in literature experienced as many self-inflicted highs and lows as Jack Kerouac. He could go from the highest peaks to the deepest vallies from one letter to the next.

In addition, the ceaseless restlessness that gripped him his entire life has never been documented any better, or with more frustrating clarity, than in these letters. One day, Kerouac thrills at the prospect of a cabin in the woods in utter isolation(to get away from the partying New York scene); the next day he has plans to live on a commune type ranch with all his friends - or move to Mexico, or Colorado or San Francisco or any number of addresses on Long Island or Florida. Many of these moves he actually followed through on only to find, in very short order, that his urge to wander had returned. At these times you notice Kerouac dropping lines to friends outlining why his new paradise has been destroyed and how perfect the next paradise is going to be.

Such was his self destructive path and, in reading these incredibly personal letters, one feels the end approaching as the America Kerouac immortalized dies a slow death, only to be reborn as an entity Kerouac is given partial credit for creating - a credit he had no interest in claiming. When all is said and done, however, the tragedy of Kerouac pales in comparison to his renowned love of life and his obsessive need to document the beauty (and ugliness) that surrounded him. These letters reflect a time when people - a great many people - got excited about poetry, literature, art and just being alive. A time before pseudo-intellectual-hip-irony made it impossible to get excited about anything. KEROUAC LIVES!

Fans of Roald Dahl will recognize his peculiar culinary inventions from his many books--now, these dubious delights are collected all together in Roald Dahl's Revolting Recipes, a compendium of dishes that sound worse than they really are. Stink Bug Eggs, for example, are really deviled eggs with some food coloring and a special, added ingredient (parmesan cheese or asafetida) to make them particularly aromatic. Mr. Twit's Beard Food consists of mashed potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, mushrooms, and cocktail franks cunningly arranged. Each recipe is simple to make, many are delightfully disgusting to contemplate, but all are easy on the palate. Roald Dahl himself would have been delighted to eat these ravishingly revolting recipes.

Dahl, one suspects, would have been tickled: the offerings are heavily weighted on the side of sweets, and the order of presentation defies adult logic. True to the book's title, there are some recipes of questionable kid appeal (the green pea soup from The Witches; or cod, scallions and spices spread on bread and fried, identified as "Mosquitoes' Toes and Wampfish Roes Most Delicately Fried"). The graphics, meanwhile, are deliciously playful: Blake's inimitable, droll drawings interact cleverly with Baldwin's food photography. For example, cartoony characters clad in pajamas snooze on a silhouetted photo of "Eatable Marshmallow Pillows." Despite the child-oriented tone, a number of recipes require adult participation by virtue of cursory directions or tricky maneuvers (e.g., ensuring that mixtures boil to specific temperatures). Grade 3-6?It had to happen: a cookbook based on the extraordinarily fascinating things that are eaten and served up by the characters in Dahl's children's books. Here it is, complete with Blake's zanily familiar illustrations creatively combined with full-color photographs. It features 31 recipes from 11 books?cakes, cookies, drinks, and main dishes?known by such names as "Snozzcumbers" (The BFG), "Wormy Spaghetti" (The Twits), and "Lickable Wallpaper" (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Some of the recipes, despite their titles, produce good tasting, recognizable dishes. Others are works of art. For example, "Mr. Twit's Beard Food" is a veritable portrait of himself, composed of mashed-potato base, mushroom-cap nostrils, hardboiled-egg eyeballs, with peas, cornflakes, and baked beans in a potato-stick beard. Many of the recipes are not for beginning cooks; indeed, cooking appears to be a secondary focus.
