One of the Best Books on Irish Political History-Ever
By Jeffery E. Mcculloh
This is a famous and well reputed book. It has been in print now for almost 30 years-deservedly so I might add. I suspect it will still be in print another 30 years from now.
Robert Kee was a journalist and a famous World War 2 P.O.W. escapee. He writes lucidly and with great style, eloquence even. Yet above all his books are a darn good read. This book is vividly written, fleshed out with characters and facts that are dispassionatly but richly detailed.
This book follows the course of Irish nationalism from the distant past of the Tudor wars and Anglo-Scottish Settlements up through the rise of DeVelera.
Its true strength is in parts two and three which recount, in great detail, the growth of Irish nationalist sentiment (and rebellion) and land reform/Catholic emancipation, during the 19th Century. Kee demonstrates clearly the ever so slight, but vital, strand of personal connection that linked Wolfe Tones' United Irishmen to Emmet, Parnell, the Fenians and eventually the I.R.A..
Part three details the rise of the Nationalist cause in the wake of Parnell's fall and the rise of the I.R.B./I.R.A. in the late Victorian era up through the Civil war of the 1920s. This book painted very clearly the horror of the Black and Tan war as well as the subsequently even more nasty Irish civil war.
Up until the 1970s a great many people in Ireland would not even speak to each other because of the bitterness engendered by the latter conflict. It spawned Ireland's two major parties and the emotions, recriminations and even hatred caused by the Collins/DeVelera conflict still has significant effect today. This era also shaped the course of the present day three I.R.A.s (Provisional,"Real" and "Stickie").
This book does not deal with the Present Ulster 'troubles' at all. But you can not understand them, nor modern Ireland without reading this book.
Above all, this book was written in a 'neutral' fashion, by an outsider, who deeply loved his subject. It lacks the usual bombast of many other slanted histories. At the same time none of the drama, emotion, glory nor hatred are lost in the telling.
To illustrate what I mean by the above review: in 1987 I asked a series of Irish politicians of all persuasions what history book would still be in print in 2037 and what volumes would they use if they had to teach Irish history to a class at Harvard. Every politician (except the Rev.Ian Paisley) mentioned this book.

The Making of a Nation
By Megan Connelly
A lot of people will be disappointed with,or even outraged by, this book. This is not just a narrative history of Ireland. It is a history of the idea of the Irish nation, highly complex concept, and one that the Irish people have struggled to define throughout history. Irish identity has no clear parameters, which makes telling the story of Ireland incredibly difficult. Kee does an incredible job of teasing out the socio-economic and political nuances of Irish society over time and explaining Irish identity as a fluid concept, with its definition closely linked to the creation of an economic underclass of disenfranchised Catholics as a result of centuries of discriminatory British policy. Kee makes no attempt to hide the injustices of British rule, but he also makes no attempt to glorify nationalists. Those who have read Benedict Anderson's "Imagined Communities" will understand and appreciate this work. Those who are looking for a recounting of the bold deeds of brave fenians will not.

Wealth of research, easy to read...
By Earnan
A wealth of information and a lifetime of research went into this trilogy of volumes covering Irish Nationalism up to the formation of the Free State and settlement of the Border Commission. The amount of heroism, suffering, waste, and tragedy chronicled in this book is astonishing and often moving.

Kee, a former RAF officer and an Englishmen, certainly has his biases as do all authors. His description of the Easter Rebellion and it's aftermath are indicative of this. He doesn't seem to understand or adequately explain why the masses of Catholic Ireland treated these rebels as heroes and martyrs so soon after their executions.

In general, his main theme is that the problem with the British rule of Ireland wasn't that they treated the Irish as an inferior race or that they did not care about their problems, it's simply that they ignored the problems of the Irish until it was too late to avoid yet another rebellion or crisis. That is one take on the sad history of misgovernment, and one that I don't agree with. The British Empire viewed Ireland as a colony, and only thought of it in terms of how it could benefit England and the Crown. The poverty of the native people, their aspirations for freedom, their desire to choose their own government, etc... these were all things that didn't register with the ruling elite in London. They only paid attention when the Irish people gave them no choice, as would happen from time to time.

Due to the narrative being extremely well written and well researched, it deserves a solid 4 stars. It is an invaluable book which covers the confusing evolution of Irish nationalism from the birth of United Irishmen to the atrocities of the Civil War. I find myself going back to it from time to time, sometimes for reference and sometimes for pleasure. Though Kee tends to repeatedly downplay nationalism and later republicanism as legitimate (if chaotic and at times incoherent) mass movements, it is still a book that any student or enthusiast needs to have.

*One caveat to add is that this book was published in 1972, thus missing out on the last 40 years of research on the subject.

Inspirational and entertaining conclusion to trilogy
By A Customer
As the final and easily the best volume in Waugh's Sword of Honor Trilogy, this book manages to stay light and amusing while dealing with the greatest taboo subject of twentieth century literature: man's relationship with God. Waugh handles the weighty topic with the same dexterity with which he treats all of his subjects, never bogging down and keeping the reader laughing. The story also provides interesting historical material on both WWII and the disappearance of the English aristocracy. I would recommend reading Men at Arms and Officers & Gentlemen, the first two volumes of the trilogy, to be able to follow the story and the significance of the events.

Victory Without Heroes
By Bill Slocum
The final volume in Evelyn Waugh's "Sword Of Honour" trilogy brings us to the end of World War II, as Guy Crouchback's quest to find glory on the battlefield has sputtered out. When we meet him in this volume, he is more of a shell than ever, his psyche ripped apart by the terrible fighting he witnessed on Crete. Will he find one last shot at redemption, of ending his own private war in victory rather than defeat?

"End Of The Battle" is the most problematic of Waugh's trilogy. The humor found in the preceding volumes is nearly gone. Key characters are snuffed out without warning. Waugh is bluntly straightforward about what he sees as the chief failing of his own country in war, a failing he saw carried over into the time he wrote this in 1960-61: The lapse of British will in the face of leftist challenge and Soviet domination.

There's no way I'd recommend any reader to this book without first getting his or her hands on "Men At Arms" or "Officers And Gentlemen," if not both. "End Of The Battle" assumes a reader is familiar with the concepts Waugh spent those last two books espousing, the cause of Catholic exceptionalism in the face of mundanity and evil, the slow strangulation of martial spirit by bureaucratic "banf," Guy's inability to have children. If you don't care about this stuff going in, Waugh is not going to do much to sell you. He already laid the groundwork in the earlier volumes; "End Of The Battle" is concerned with resolution.

There's many Waugh bete noirs in evidence, some which will no doubt bother many modern readers. Communists and leftists are practically interchangable, and there's a "velvet mafia" at work, too, homosexuals who toil to undercut democracy and serve Uncle Joe Stalin. Even if this was not at odds with history (the Burgess spy ring members were nearly all gay), Waugh presses his point with unsettling belligerence.

What's to be said for a comic novel whose most comic sequence involves a woman's fruitless search for an abortion? Actually, quite a lot. The comedy in "End Of The Battle" may be largely mirthless, but it is sharp and biting, too. The characterizations of Guy, his father, uncle Peregrine, and Guy's former wife Virginia are layered and involving. Waugh moves his story in unexpected directions, and as he does so, brings the themes and concerns of his trilogy into focus and resolution that, while not always satisfying, have integrity.

"End Of The Battle" reminds me a lot of the Hemingway novel "A Farewell To Arms," with the same pathetic tone and the prevailing sense of war's wastefulness even behind the lines. It's a very lived-in book. It also makes for an arresting conclusion to Waugh's last major work of fiction, the "Sword Of Honour" trilogy, as a kind of existential if not nihilistic book that nevertheless manages to be profoundly spiritual in its focus. At one point, Guy's father explains that winning or losing great conflicts matters less than the salvation of a single soul, and it is this Waugh means for the reader to carry away.

Does Waugh do this? A lot depends on your mindset going in, on your ability to go with the often-nasty twists and turns Waugh puts his characters through, and whether you've done your homework reading the previous volumes. Waugh the cynic makes a good case in the end for the presence of grace in this world, but perhaps a better one for how difficult such grace is to achieve.

A somber, but satisfying conclusion to Sword of Honor
By Dave Deubler
The acclaimed Sword of Honor trilogy concludes in this somber, but still hopeful story of the closing days of WWII in Europe. The protagonist, no-longer-youthful British officer Guy Crouchback, is assigned as liaison to a group of Yugoslav partisans, and finds himself involved in the plight of a group of desperate Jewish refugees. On the Home Front, Guy re-unites with his ex-wife Virginia (for whom he still has strong feelings) but can she provide him with a hoped-for heir, or will she die like the character in Ludovic's novel, forcing Guy to seek love and happiness elsewhere?
Early in the book, Guy's father admonishes that "if only one soul is saved, that is full compensation" and this seems to be the real point of the author's story, and ultimately of the entire trilogy: after all the nonsense, the foolishness, the failures, and even the horror, just one single act of mercy can be enough to account for a wasted life. This hope for a final justification lends an optimistic tone to a book that is otherwise filled with the death and destruction of the bombing of London, but it also ties together the various themes that the trilogy has focused on: the senselessness of war, the relevance (or irrelevance) of Catholicism, and the manifest follies and inequities of modern Britain and Western culture generally. If the first two volumes of this series seemed a little too light and pointless, this book is where it all really pays off. A strong statement about how one man makes sense of an increasingly senseless world.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2?This version of The Three Little Pigs is strong on tradition, with the usual repetitive actions and sentences, and the first two little pigs get eaten. The structure and familiar story line provide a good vehicle for youngsters beginning to read on their own. Rader's watercolor illustrations contain plenty of context clues and provide humor. Though Ziefert's text is more complex than Margaret Hillert's pre-primer edition (Modern Curriculum, 1963) and not as original?or as funky?as James Marshall's retelling (Dial, 1989), it will get plenty of use in beginning-to-read collections.?Gale W. From Booklist
Gr. 1^-2. This simple version of a favorite tale might be a good advertisement for the joys of reading, with the wolf's repeated refrain allowing youngsters to practice their reading skills. The wolf, who is ultimately disposed of in a pot of boiling water, is a hungry rascal with a rakish grin, in contrast to the porcine trio, presented in smiling innocence. A happy union of audience and reading fun. Mary Harris Veeder

It fits the audience intended
By ArdisK
Not all books are written for all audiences. This retelling is perfect for the mature 4-yr-old who is on the verge of learning to read and for the 5- and 6-yr-old who is a Beginning Reader. The pictures are clear and uncluttered with just enough text per page that doesn't overwhelm the intended audience. The Almost-Reader can retell the tale by looking at the illustrations; the Beginning Reader can read it with good support from the illustrations and well-chosen words. Yes, the first 2 pigs get eaten which, curiously, delights this audience (but could be distressing to a younger child. I've used this particular edition since 1995 in my kindergarten with great success - it's perfect for our needs. (And for those who do Sulzby testing, this is a good book to use.)

Just perfect! We love this book
By S. Mathis
My 3 yr old son loves this book. It was a perfect introduction into fairy tales. Yes, the first two pigs do get eaten by the wolf. That is exactly the way I remember the story from my childhood. This fact, didn't distress my son at all. I like that it is an easy to read book and we'll get the benefit of that when he's a beginning reader of text. Right now he's "reading" the book to himelf by memory. The pictures and short text help this skill. It just can't get any better than that. We're adding this one to our collection.

My two year old's favorite bedtime story
By C. Silva
My two year old is obsessed with the three little pigs and the big bad wolf. He loves this book and makes me read it to him several times before his nap and bedtime. The only thing that I don't like about the story is that the 1st and 2nd little pigs get eaten. I like the story much better when they run to the next pig's house and they all 3 end up safely together in the brick house.

"Lucille Odom, the 17-year-old precociously perceptive protagonist, narrates the story of her family's unravelling and its reconstitution in a different form," PW observed of this "luminous" novel by the author of Dreams of Sleep , who "again exhibits masterful control of language and narrative drive."

From School Library Journal
YA Forging a gentle goodbye note when her mother abruptly deserts the family comes naturally to 17-year-old Lucille Odom of Mount Pleasant , South Carolina . She views her father as an innocent with a heart that could be easily broken. She worries about him, and about her older sister Rae who comes home pregnant and hastily married. This compassionate and wonderfully cerebral character comes alive on the first page. She has unforgettable views on patriotism, the ozone layer, men, the fallibility of human memory, and the many other concerns that she routinely ruminates about. During the summer of her family's upheaval and reconfiguration, her understanding of love in all its forms grows vastly as she leaves her childhood behind. A novel of outstanding quality. Keddy Outlaw, Harris County Public Library, Houston

From Library Journal
Lucille Odom, a highly intelligent 17-year-old, finds her world turned upside down when her mother walks out abruptly on a seemingly happy marriage and her absent sister arrives home, announcing she's pregnant and married. Lucille finds herself taking on serious responsibilities and acquiring a new, but fragile, maturity as she deals with her own emotions and tries to hold together her crumbling family life. This second novel is set in Charleston, South Carolina, where the author lives and which she describes in vivid and loving detail. An interesting, often amusing study of modern adolescence and its problems by the author of the highly regarded Dreams of Sleep ( LJ 3/15/84). Recommended for public libraries. An immensely moving "coming of age" story
By LM Estus
Josephine Humphreys is one of my favorite authors (right up there with Atwood, Kingsolver, Morrison), and this book just became yet another reason. I'd avoided buying it for some years out of some ill-considered notion that I'd already experienced the story because I'd seen and enjoyed the film.

As soon as I bought "Rich in Love" and started in, I remembered why I love reading. The film followed the book rather faithfully, but Humphreys' flawless prose and palpable love for her characters elevated the experience. It is rare to enjoy superb craft *and* compassionate insight. Josephine Humphreys reaffirms my faith in humanity.

Often felt soul-related to Lucille...
By Andrea
I read this book abou 3 years ago, when I was about to graduate school, and I still think about it a lot. It was very intetesting to read about adolescense in such an unusual way. I was delighted with some of Lucille's views of the world and at the same ti me found my own opinions more normal when I often saw them expressed by Josephine Humphreys, through Lucille. She is a girl who follows her impulses, acts according to her feelings and makes many mistakes. But those mistakes let her become a real human being and tell the reader that people are making mistakes all the time, and this is not a tragedy, but can teach you much about life. I loved the book and recommend it to everyone!

Terrific Story...I Loved This Book
By Barbara
What a wonderful story! There are little tidbits of Charleston history and I could almost smell the pluff-mud while Lucille was in the backyard at her house while she was mentally going over things in her vacinity. This book covers the complexity of life from Run-away wives to headstrong teens to retirement stress to falling in love with the wrong person to a denied pregnancy to senior-aged romance. And all of this portrayed through the eyes of a seventeen year old daughter. Terrific book......I'm SO GLAD it was a recommendation from Amazon.com. Great story, I couldn't put it down til I finished it, and there again, the author doesn't leave you hanging and wondering about the characters.

We loved this map book!
By Emily Blake
The London Mapguide was indispensable during our recent trip to the city. Each page's map is jam-packed with information: sites, museums, post offices, parks, hospitals, churches, and even select pubs, restaurants and clubs. Aesthetics are important to me, and I can vouch that this guide is very well put-together, colorful and easy to read. Also, the book handily has pages at the beginning and end with plenty of info about museums and other sites, including hours of operation, their map location pages, pricing, etc. as well as emergency numbers, service info important to tourists, a large Underground map (yes, the famous one) and a fairly comprehensive index of street names.
The most unexpected benefit of the guide was how handy it was for figuring out the public transportation system. We bus-hopped all over London using this guide alone, seeing much more than we would have if we had just taken the Underground. The maps very clearly illustrate all of the bus routes and Tube/railway stops and it's super easy to trace how to get from one part of the city to another, seeing as much as possible along the way.
We used this map guide so much during our stay in London that it feels like as much a memento as anything else we brought home. Just flipping through it now brings back a lot of memories. Another reviewer complains that this guide doesn't cover a very extended area, and while it is true that it doesn't include maps for the outer fringes of London, it covered a perfect area for we tourists spending a week trekking all over the city's heart. I strongly recommend this guide!

You're going to LOVE BRITAIN!
By Richard R. Carlton
I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.

Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!

Fodor's

Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:

The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.

SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide

PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit

UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out

CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information

Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

MapGuide

MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.

Time Out

The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

Blue Guides

Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

Michelin

Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

Let's Go

Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:

Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.

City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.

PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information

MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

Must Have for travelers
By mem
I've lived in London for a year, and have traveled there over 20 times in the past 15 years and I never found any London map or guide that is in the same class as this one.
Easy to read and follow, but most of all the extra identifications of pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, churches etc. make this the fantastic companion for your trip. The book format makes it much easier to find the part of London you want, but unlike a London A to Z book, this one is small enough for your purse or pocket.
Also, the brief textual sections on Museums and galleries, points of interest, entertainments etc. are invaluable. Just a quick look in this area gives you the phone number, times open and closed, and address for just about any thing you will need.
This is simply put the best, bar none, map guide book out there. Certainly an essential whenever I travel to London.

About the Author
Betsy Byars began her writing career rather late in life. "In all of my school years, . . . not one single teacher ever said to me, 'Perhaps you should consider becoming a writer,'" Byars recalls. "Anyway, I didn't want to be a writer. Writing seemed boring. You sat in a room all day by yourself and typed. If I was going to be a writer at all, I was going to be a foreign correspondent like Claudette Colbert in Arise My Love. I would wear smashing hats, wisecrack with the guys, and have a byline known round the world. My father wanted me to be a mathematician." So Byars set out to become mathematician, but when she couldn't grasp calculus in college, she turned to English. Even then, writing was not on her immediate horizon.

First, she married and started a family. The writing career didn't emerge until she was 28, a mother of two children, and living in a small place she called the barracks apartment, in Urbana, Illinois. She and her husband, Ed, had moved there in 1956 so he could attend graduate school at the University of Illinois. She was bored, had no friends, and so turned to writing to fill her time. Byars started writing articles for The Saturday Evening Post, Look, and other magazines. As her family grew and her children started to read, she began to write books for young people and, fortunately for her readers, discovered that there was more to being a writer than sitting in front of a typewriter.

"Making up stories and characters is so interesting that I'm never bored. Each book has been a different writing experience. It takes me about a year to write a book, but I spend another year thinking about it, polishing it, and making improvements. I always put something of myself intomy books -- something that happened to me. Once a wanderer came by my house and showed me how to brush my teeth with a cherry twig; that went in The House of Wingscopyright © 2000 by Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. Loved it, still love it...
By Jaina Solo
What a shame this book has gotten some bad reviews here--it happens to be one of my favorites!
I first read it at age 10 or so, and really liked it then. In fact, I kept my copy all these years (I'm now way more than 10!), and it sits on my shelf with other childhood "classics."
I appreciate the characterization of Lennie, a lonely boy who wishes he were on his favorite TV shows. His constant daydreaming is causing him problems at school, and his dangerous hobby of breaking into unoccupied summer cottages near his home leads to a life-threatening encounter with a snake. But the plot (boy meets snake) isn't really the issue here--this book is really a character study. Lennie is a good kid--well-meaning, but somewhat lazy. As a kid, I felt drawn to his predicament. Perhaps you will, too.
Does Lennie learn anything in The TV Kid? Yes (and it's not "too much TV is bad for you"). I think the other reviewers here have missed the point (it's not about the TV, people!). AND I think Byars' book is top-notch writing. Funny, touching, and exciting, too! Give this one a chance--it deserves it!

the T.v. Kid is a really good and exciting book to read, the T.V. Kid is a kind of fictional book. It was really exciting in the begining this book got me hooked in the beginingg . In the book the kid loved to watch T.V. alot and daydream but it got him in trouble. He was bitten by a snake in one of his dreams He thought it wasn't real but when he woke up he saw two teeth marks on his legs. he never used to have friends but a imaginary one until he had he's last dream and found out that an Imaginary friend is not as good as a real one. The T.V. kid was a really good book it was weird how those dreams kept on happening in real life and he thought it wasn't real. This book is a book you can read till probably the 8th Grade because at that level you can still be reading that book.Betsey Byars is a good author and I would like to read a book by her again because I bet they're also good. Although this is not the best book I've read it's close to being the best one and I started to think that was a non-fiction book.

Interesting Psychological Study
By Professor
The TV Kid uses discussion of tv-watching and other lonely activities (including housebreaking and falling asleep in someone else's bed!) to indicate the difficulties of not having the ideal American Dream family and home. Our hero has to learn to appreciate what he has and who he is. And he does. But he apparently has to get bitten by a snake first. Not a brilliantly constructed narrative, but a good case study of the complexities of today's families.
