By her own admission, Beth Cappadora is a rather haphazard mother and wife. Still, her family is reasonably happy and her career as a photographer relatively satisfying. In a few short minutes in a crowded hotel lobby, Beth's world changes forever. Her two-year-old son, Ben, left in the care of older brother Vincent, disappears. Despite the efforts of police and friends, the search for Ben fails, and Beth retreats into grief. Emotionally abandoning her other children and her husband, she spends the next nine years in self-absorbed brooding, unmoved by either the increasing delinquency of Vincent or her husband's demands for change. Ben's miraculous return results more in shock than joy and initially drives the family further apart. First novelist Mitchard unstintingly explores the minutiae of grief, creating realistic characters and no easy solutions. Very Good, but Incomplete

This book has over 400 pages of every parents WORST nightmare, and it goes into it in a way that is really diturbing... why?... because it could happen... and, it HAS happened.
I really don't think any of us has the slightest clue of how we would react to something as tragic and terrifying as that, and in my opinion, Jacquelyn Mitchard did an excellent job in describing what ONE MOTHER did, how she felt, and how all her world changed in 10 minutes.
I agree with some of the other reviewers... she's is not a highly likable character, but, under the circumstances, who would be?... She's not your picture perfect mother... but then again, no one is... still...the author makes you feel what she's feeling, even if you don't understand her... and her family.
The reason why I put 4 stars was that I felt the book was a bit incomplete, because we never find out so many things that in my opinion should have been explained... also... in the end, we really don't know what happened to the family, and after NINE years of KNOWING every single detail, it was a bit hard to let them go.
Over all, a good, entertaining, but extremelly frightening book. However, I would love to ask the author a few questions that remained unsolved...

A deep and emotional experience

Even if you have seen the movie (by the same name), READ THIS BOOK. Mitchard weaves such a hauntingly beautiful tale about every family's nightmare and the aftermath. While checking into a hotel for a class reunion, Beth Cappadora turns around to realize that her 3-year-old son is gone. The first part of the book describes so many emotions that the family goes through: the shock, the horror, the frantic search, then the realization that life must go on. But how do you? In a split second, everything has changed, her relationship with her husband, the other children, as well as friends and neighbors. A bond develops with one of the officers who refuses to give up on this case. The ending is not what anyone expects and truly shows the strength and absolute beauty of a mother's love. Wonderfully paced, this is one of those rare stories which I will never forget.

Maybe it's just me, but...

..I just could not get myself to feel much sympathy or identification with Beth, the main character in this story. We all have our moments when we look away from our children because we are preoccupied. I don't think many of us have them when our kids, who are all small, are in a busy lobby of a hotel in Chicago. I felt the main character was narcissitic and shallow, and while there are certainly people like this in the world, to really connect with her in this particular story, it would have helped me to LIKE her, which I didn't.
While the book is well written and the storyline keeps the reader going, what I found to be the most intersting aspect of this book was the way the older brother was portrayed. I found the guilt and his response to it to be what kept me reading this book. I wanted to know that he would be okay. While I found myself not really caring about the mother, I DID care about the son. His feelings, as a confused child missing his favored younger brother, and as an older child, angry with the adults in his family, were captured well and he was a character I could care about.
I wouldn't say don't read this book at all, because I will read almost everything, but I wouldn't put this one at the top of my list. Sorry Oprah!

About the Author

Fox books are timeless and the best. My children and now my grandchildren love their Fox books...in fact, my children requested them for their children! The stories are wonderful - humorous, relatable to both children and adults, good lessons without being preachy, and just plain old FUN to share or by oneself.

Author Julia Ross has the unusual job description of "nutritional psychologist," which means that she works with people to eradicate food cravings, addictions, and eating disorders (including overeating). The gist of The Diet Cure plan is that food allergies, hormonal irregularities, blood sugar swings, and thyroid dysfunction, among other factors, cause biochemical imbalances that lead to food addiction and weight gain, and that these problems can usually be lessened or eradicated with the proper diet and supplements.

To be sure, most of these health problems ought to be diagnosed by a medical professional, but they often get overlooked because their symptoms can be numerous and vague (fatigue, depression, inability to concentrate). It is like a magic wand

...at least for me! Her recommendations for amino acid supplementation worked incredibly. Although only 10 - 15 pounds overweight, I have dieted and "not dieted" since I was a teenager. By 45, I have learned that dieting, even moderate programs such as Weight Watchers, are only something I can follow for so long. I would always inexplicably binge, feel completely confused and completely without "will power" and note one more failure.
Though I would prefer to be slimmer, I have always been more upset by the fact that I couldn't "control myself" or follow through with a decision to eat healthfully and not binge. What wierd, psychological thing was causing me to do this??
Hello Dr. Ross! If only one, tiny thing stands out as a "magic wand" experience (and there are more than one) it was her "emergency" recommendation to handle cravings. Open a capsule of L-Glutemine and let it dissolve under your tongue. I have never experienced such an about-face when it came to fighting the urge to EAT IT!
From reading some reviews by others, I would encourage readers to follow her recommendations in full, not "sort of." Certainly everybody's body chemistry is different, but you will not be giving this program a fair trial if you approach it haphazardly. That said, it is a very simple program to follow: eat lots of protein, and lots and lots of vegtables and fruit, and take your amino supplements. No rigid combinations or measuring is required. You only need to make sure you're eating enough protein and veggies. (It sounded like a disaster waiting to happen for me - I never ate LOTS of either of those things!) Yes, the supplements do cost, but if you are a binge eater, believe me you'll make up the cost on all the food you DON'T buy any more.
Even if you are a vegetarian (for ethical or health reasons) consider this program. If you are as frustrated and demoralized as I was, it's really worth a try.

Made sense & answered my questions

I bought the book one afternoon and couldn't put it down until I was through reading it! It answered so many of my lingering questions that weren't urgent enough to see my doctor about but which still concerned me. Julia Ross explains the problems, causes, and solutions in a very clear and understandable way. Now I am finally able to see my patterns of dieting and the troubles which have followed me since. Although I've spent a lot of money on supplements I felt better the day I started taking them; I had more energy and my constant need for sugar disappeared. To me it's worth it! I feel safe taking the supplements because I checked with my MD before hand and he said he took amino acid supplements as well. My doctor's only recommendation was to chart and observe the way I feel so that I can create my own plan and be able to maintain my mood and control my cravings. Julia Ross recommends the same thing: to be aware of your body and be able to help it help itself.
Definitely worth reading if you are interested in health and willing to get off the teeter-totter of dieting. Who cares about "double-blind studies" if you get healthy and REAL results? Julia Ross mentions the Blood-type diets which may have been "debunked" but I have found that I am allergic to the foods that Eat Right for Your Type recommends avoiding (dairy & wheat). Personally, I don't care what the majority opinions of theories are, if I feel better and am loosing weight in a healthy way then I'm gonna go for it!

For 15 years, I've blamed myself for lack of willpower in controlling my 'recreational sugar use' but now I realize - it's not my fault. My body has been conspiring against me with its multiple imbalances. This book has saved my life from an eating disorder, moodiness, heinous PMS, cold hands, skin discoloration, obsessive worrying, memory loss & the list goes on and on with things that I would've NEVER attributed to my diet. 1000 thank you's Dr. Ross!

Excellent little novel.

John McGahern, The Dark (Panther, 1965)
John McGahern would seem to be another of those authors whose talent is lionized in his native land, but who never quite had Americans get the hang of his work (q.v. Margaret Laurence). The Dark, McGahern's second novel, is a fascinating portrait of adolescence that deserves far, far wider appreciation than it seems to have ever received.
McGahern's homeland of Ireland may have something to do with that. The Dark was banned not long after its release for its rather cavalier treatments of both sex and religion, and so a novel published almost forty years ago has actually had something less than that to make a name for itself. Someday, Oprah will discover this book and feature it in her book club, and well, McGahern will have it made.
Oprah couldn't not love this book. It's dysfunction central. The home depicted here won't be found in the bucolic emerald landscapes on sees in movies of the time. Here, we have the poor Depression-era Ireland, where the family burns peat and straw because it can't afford coal, instead. The nameless protagonist's mother is dead, presumably in childbirth. The father is both verbally and sexually abusive to his (uncounted, in the novel) children; explicitly to his son, implicitly to his daughters (though whether there is anything to this forms the crux of a scene much later on in the novel). There is much here to lay the groundwork for the main character of this novel to hate his father, but McGahern isn't going to take the easy way out, building a complex love/hate relationship between the main character and his father, complicated by both their feelings for Joan, the oldest daughter.
The book has rightly been compared to Joyce's Portrait of the Artist, though McGahern's prose is far clearer and less florid, almost minimal. His characters are beautifully drawn, real in every sense of the word, and it is impossible not to at least empathize with them. McGahern takes on the daunting task of telling a story with one main character and many different points of view, while keeping all those points of view sympathetic, as if he were telling the story from everyone's perspectives simultaneously. He pulls it off with great flair.
This is an uncomfortable book, to be sure, but it is a very good one, perhaps even a great one. Certainly one of the finer coming-of-age novels I've run across. ****

A wonderfully haunting novel

A poetically written story of a boy's coming of age in rural Ireland, "The Dark" is a journey through teenage years full of self doubt, sexual frustration and religious fear. The protagonist, whose name we're never actually told, is an intelligent boy who excels academically, though he doubts and fears his own future. He wonders if he should become a priest, go to the university to be a scientist, join the civil service or end up a potato farmer like his father. Through the years of indecision and study, the boy endures his widowed father's physical and verbal abuse. But as he grows older and learns more about the truth of the world, the past, present and future take on new perspectives and his relationship with his father changes from one of fear and hate to a subdued respect and love.
"The Dark" is lusciously written with a poetic grace hard to find in most contemporary novels. McGahern gently pulls the reader in, not only to the boy's psychological world, but also into the physical: the rural Irish landscape, the dark fearful Catholic confessional box and the squalid Irish farmhouse dominated by an abusive father. McGahern pulls you in, but does not need to hold you there; you'll stay of your own free will in this simultaneously simple and complex world, and find yourself haunted by it after you leave.

A Wonderful Novel By A Lesser Known Irish Author

To some extent, banned books have a special place in my heart. I recall a local bookstore chain had a sign in its window that advertised a banned book sale. All of the titles on sale were banned at one time or another. One of the titles was THE CATCHER IN THE RYE. I decided to buy it, hoping my parents would take a fit and I could be a bit of a rebel. Both probably read the book and didn't even flinch an eye at their maverick son reading a forbidden book. Of course it was 1980, so it was hardly controversial anymore. A few days later, I had the book in school, and one of my favorite teachers complimented me on selecting a good book to read. She also suggested other titles which moved me past childhood books to more mature literature. In effect, her complimenting my reading selection was a significant step in my becoming an adult reader. Now when I see a banned book display, I often remember her, take a second look, and see what the banned books have to offer. More often than not only hype (the banning of some mediocre books made them instant best sellers).It is by taking a second look at a banned book display I discovered John McGahern's THE DARK.

I had heard of McGahern before, and actually own BY THE LAKE. When I learned that the book was banned in Ireland, I immediately thought it had to either offend Church leaders or mention sex. I also expected it to be somewhat shallow. Poking fun at the Church and Irish attitudes toward sex is so commonplace it is cliché. McGahern avoids this trap and writes a powerful coming of age tale that is both riveting and disturbing. The unnamed protagonist lives in an Ireland similar to the Ireland of ANGELA'S ASHES but unlike Frank McCourt, McGahern paints a portrait using sparse words to give vivid images of a country far behind the modern world. The young man's single father is abusive, yet also tender and loving, which leads to a rather complex and at times twisted love/hate relationship between father and son. While the portrait of the Church is hardly better than that of the overall picture of Ireland, the young man's place in the Church is unsettled as well. The priests and religious of THE DARK are more conflicted than the anti-sex clerics that populate so many books, usually by American authors trying to show their interpretation of Ireland and often do so in a one dimensional manner. Coming to terms with sexuality and attraction also plays a major role in this work, and we find a young man who is confused about normal adolescent feelings, but these confused feelings can at one moment be brutal, but also can be endearingly innocent, especially when he develops his first crushes on girls. We may wonder if the young man will eventually be a priest where he seems headed at times, or the university where he dreams of majoring in science. Readers hope he does not follow in the dead end footsteps of his father whose love and put downs both seem to motivate this determined young man. In order to discover which road he takes, read the book.

The pacing of this book is slow, but intentionally so. Readers get to savor McGahern's images and also enter into the mind of the character. The point of view can at time be confusing, but again this is more the intention of the author rather than a literary flaw. Some believe McGahern creates a picture of Ireland rarely seen. I am not sure that this is accurate. He is in keeping with the Ireland we find in the writings of James Joyce, and to a lesser extent Frank O'Connor, and shares their literary gifts.

Cracker Jackson

Cracker Jackson was a very good book. It explained the importance of telling someone about an abusive family. Cracker showed that he really cared about his baby-sitter to go through all the trouble of sneaking to her house and checking on her. I thought Cracker was smart for confronting an adult about the situation before the matters became worse. This book kept you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happened next. I couldn't put the book down! This book shows you how Betsy Byars took a horrible situation and turned it into something special. The book teaches you that just by caring about someone you can save their life. After all the hard work Cracker has been through to help Alma has paid off and now Alma can forget about the past and go on to a bigger and better future.

Hungry for Cracker Jackson

Cracker Jackson will make you hungry for more. I gave it four stars and three thumbs up. From Cracker driving the car, to Nicole in a coma, this book will make sure you never put it down. Even though Alma denies getting beat up by Billy-Ray, Cracker doesn't stop helping unless he knows she's safe. So, if your between the ages of ten and fourteen you will love this book. I liked this book because it gives alot of detail and clues. In this book, it delt with a possible real life situation. Also, it gave a vivid picture of what was going on. The dialoge they say brings you into the story. It's almost like you are a character in the book. So, if you are someone who is interested in cliff hangers and drama, then this is the book for you.

I just finished reading Cracker Jackson. I think it is a really good book. All kids should read it. The book talks about a husband beating up his wife. Cracker told her to leave him, but she said no. So Cracker tries to take Alma to Avondale to a clnic so she can get help. On the way to Avondale she said, "Take me back," so Cracker took her back. This book shows if someone is hurting you, you should tell someone or get help. If you see someone getting beaten up, you should go tell someone. By Daniel Pinon

Kurt Vonnegut, who is interviewed in this volume, has said many times and in many ways that humans are always seeking extended families. Author Jeff Greenwald looks into one of the largest artificial families ever created, the legion of Star Trek fans who know each other by secret signs, symbols, and addictions, and who turn out to be one of the most interesting subjects for sociological study ever invented by a major movie studio. Greenwald travels the globe, interviewing Klingon clans from Germany, Trek-heads in an English pub, and dozens of Americans who find fulfillment in the wearing of funny ears. Of extreme interest is the section on the Klingon Language Institute, an actual organization of linguists and scholars who are translating the Bible into Klingon. There's already a splinter group who've decided to do their own Bible translation that will be truer to Klingon culture. There's also a delightfully eclectic assortment of celebrity interviews, some of which are eye-popping. The final chapter, I swear to Kahless, is a talk with an unlikely Trek fan: the Dalai Lama. More than a Trekkie ode to Kirk, Spock, Picard and their ilk, this book provides a deconstruction of the worldwide appeal of the series and movies through interviews with cast members, writers, directors, fans and a variety of ancillary subjects, including Arthur C. Clarke, Kurt Vonnegut and the Dalai Lama. Roughly following production of the movie Star Trek: First Contact, Greenwald's own trek takes him to Hungary, Japan, India, Italy, England and other far-flung Star Trek outposts to meet with fans possessing varying degrees of dedication to the show. There are would-be Klingons picnicking in Germany; engineers at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., trading one-liners from the show; and Hungarian enthusiasts meeting at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. No doubt hardcore Trek aficionados will find much of interest here as key actors, such as Patrick Stewart, and others involved with the series and movies expound on their characters, plots and the reasons for the three-decade popularity of the Star Trek franchise. This is fannish as all get-out. Greenwald actually met bimbos with Brandon Branna, one of the main Star Trek writers! He drank vodka with Kate Mulgrew, the only female starship captain in any ST series! He was treated curtly by Patrick Stewart, aka Jean-Luc Picard! Less gushily reported and therefore more satisfying are Greenwald's less expected visits with ST fans in other countries. Each group of them finds subtexts in the overwhelmingly popular series that support their worldview. Although German Klingon fanciers will not surprise any fan with a stereotypical vision of Aryans (and of Worf's people), the Hungarians who meet at an American fried chicken franchise in Budapest prove strangely moving in their ability to find inspiration in a future of global, if not universal, peace. Well written and well paced, this is good reading despite the gush, as well as loaded with backstage scenes, though probably not enough to satisfy deep-dyed Trekkers' appetites for them. A wonderful contribution to Gene Roddenberry's vision

This book is full of very useful insights into the effect Star Trek has had on humanity in the last 32 years. By reporting on Star Trek's impact on so many different cultures, Jeff Greenwald is following in Gene Roddenberry's footsteps. He is helping his readers see not just themselves, but the diversity that exists among Star Trek's fans world-wide.
Patrick Stewart is quoted in the book as saying how very valuable it is to be able to put yourself in someone else's shoes, to see their point of view (not just your own). If this book helps this happen for its readers, it will have served a very valuable purpose - not just providing a behind the scenes look at Star Trek, but a view of how people of other cultures see themselves as well.

The ultimate book on Star Trek Fandom

Jeff Greenwald observes and interviews various Star Trek authors, producers and TV Stars as well as Star Trek Fans all around the world. What is the result of that? The answer is: amazing! I can't remember having read anything like it before!
First of all, he has a very fluent, easy-to-read writing style. You just sit there, flip over one page after another and get sucked into the book. After ten pages, I was unable to put the book aside for anything else but work, food or sleep. But the book does not stop there. Jeff Greenwald has written a very thoughtful, very reflective book on the Star Trek Fandom. No matter which facet he meets - may it be authors, producers, stars or the common Trekker - he shows a insight about how Star Trek gives each personal dream and hope a shape.
Jeff tells us those stories of hopes and dreams - but always with a twinkle in his eyes, ready to catch remarks of people who may have hopes, but are as well capable to laugh about themselves.
Oh boy - I waited long for such a book!

The best overview of the worldwide Star Trek Phenomena!

In this unprecedented view of how and why Star Trek has captured the psyche of the entire world, Jeff Greenwald has gone where no author has gone before. He has taken an objective view of the Star Trek craze (making this book a must read for not only ST fans, but for everyone!) from the far east to America. With unprecedented access to the sound stages of ST First Contact and Paramount's Hart building (where the writers weave their magic), this book is a ST fan's dream come true. Only after reading Mr. Greenwald's "away missions" can people truly understand how a 35 year old American-made TV show can capture the minds and hearts of people all over the world. Interview with cultural icons such as the Dalai Lama, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Arthur C. Clarke, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, and others help make this book the superb creation that it is. Make sure to eat a good meal and have a long nap before attempting to read "Future Perfect," because once you p! ick it up you won't be able to do anything else until you finish it. Mr. Greenwald's clear and concise method of writing allows you to dive into the book, only to resurface once you have read it in its entirety. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it ended. I could have easily read another 500 pages full of the author's amazing insights and sense of humor! Copywrite 1998.

Recovery Bible

The work of Slatter and Lovett covers all aspects of company turnaround and can be, with some restrictions, used as a valuable help during crisis management.
This model stresses an overlap of planning and implementation activities. Crisis management and regular business planning have to be handled simultaneously and a number of generic strategies implemented parallel and vigorously, which pays contribute to the extreme time pressure in a crisis situation.
The model takes a holistic approach by including aspects of leadership and stakeholder confidence, but the author misses mechanisms that allow the flexibility for a basic strategy change as a reaction to an altering environment.
Remarkable is that the workstream of the development of the business plan only is limited to mid stage of the emergency phase. This could be an indication that in Slatter's and Lovett's concept the business plan has a rather static and inflexible structure. If writing the business plan is considered a process that constantly has to be adapted to the changing environment, then the development of the business plan should stretch over all phases of the turnaround process. Also naming the business plan the "Bible of Recovery" implies that the once developed strategies are chiseled in stone.
The static character of the business plan in this model is circumstantiated by the fact that a major element in their business plan is a description of the desired business in its end state, which sets the course of company development on fixed bearings too rigidly and does not allow it to steer around a possible storm.
Like the model of Schaffer and Thomson they constantly review the progress of development in their implementation report, which they call a dynamic living document. This is a functional and important tool to keep the turnaround momentum moving, but they use this information merely as a performance measure to analyze, improve and document the actions, which lead to the achievements of set targets and deadlines, without reflecting, if those targets or strategies are still relevant or need to be adjusted. Therefore this concept cannot fully utilize the essential learning effect, is not flexible in reformulating its strategies, if necessary, and has no mechanisms to institutionalize refinements.
There is only one small contribution in the work of Slatter and Lovett towards strategic flexibility. Under "critical situations during implementation" they mention that an initiative should be amended, if the performance analysis of the implementation report recognizes an underperformance caused by an invalid assumption. They describe this though as a rather isolated event, which has no strong influence on the overall strategic process.
The author considers one reason, why Slatter and Lovett take a more static approach towards the business plan lies in one of the general advantages of a crisis situation, which is the necessity of overlapping of planning and implementation. By this the time gap between planning and implementation is fairly short and the chances that the environment changes drastically are fairly slim although they exist, as the September 11 event showed. This statement counts for the analysis-, emergency- and strategic change phase. But since the concept of Slatter and Lovett also reach into the growth phase until company renewal has been established the author believes it should establish mechanisms, which allow for a strategic change.
The author concludes from the above, that the concept of Slatter and Lovett can be used as a valuable approach towards crisis management , if it is augmented with the constant learning and reformulating principles of Schaffer and Thomson, Pelz and other authors who state that capturing the essential learning effect should be the core achievement of a business plan.
