From Publishers Weekly
Maps and Gifts (see below) are the first two volumes in Farah's second trilogy, Blood in the Sun (after the acclaimed, three-volume Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship), but they stand as prequels to the previously published, award-winning third volume, Secrets (1998). This pair of works by Farah, a chronicler of modern Africa's sociopolitical turbulence and growth who has lived in exile from his native Somalia since 1974, are being released in hardcover in the U.S. for the first time, though they have been available abroad for several years. Of the two novels, Maps is the richer in concept and execution, beautifully worked in the dense, intricate prose for which Farah is known. Askar, orphaned as a child, is rescued from his dead mother's side and raised in a small village by Misra, an older woman who develops a mysterious, protective bond with him. Even when he moves to the capital to live with his prosperous Uncle Hilaal, Askar's origins continue to preoccupy him, and he grows into a serious, introspective youth fixed on the urgent question of his identity. Hilaal, the cook and nurturer in his city home, is able to provide some answers for his baffled nephew on the subjects of African tradition, Somalian manhood and selflessness. Employing a poetic, imaginative style, Farah skillfully juxtaposes Askar's emotional turmoil and the struggles of his beloved Somalia under siege, as the characters try to understand why blood must be shed for territorial gain. In the end, Askar must choose between avenging his soldier father's death by joining the army, or pursuing his academic studies, but the choice is taken out of his hands by powerful external forces. From Library Journal
Intended as the first two books in the author's "Blood in the Sun" trilogyAthe third being Secrets (LJ 5/1/98)Athese novels are a moving study of life in Somalia before the civil war. Maps is the story of Askar, found as a newborn beside his mother's dead body and raised by Misra, an outcast in the village because of her Ethiopian heritage. Years later, during the war with Ethiopia, Askar must choose between his country and the woman who raised him when Misra is accused of betraying their village to the enemy. Gifts tells the story of Duniya, a nurse trying to raise three children alone in the capital city of Mogadishu. When she decides to accept responsibility for an abandoned baby, she must confront the patriarchs of her family, Somalia's male-dominated bureaucracy, and her own fierce independence. In both novels, Farah has eloquently woven dreams, memories, and folklore into modern tales of ordinary people trying to live their lives with dignity in the midst of famine, colonialism, and longstanding ethnic hatreds. With their own unique styles and engaging characters, each novel easily stands on its own. Recommended for all libraries, even those that do not own the third novel.AEllen Flexman, Indianapolis-Marion Cty. P.L.

From Kirkus Reviews
Maps ($23.95; Aug.; 272 pp.; 1-55970-485-3): Originally published in 1986, this is the first installment in Farahs abovementioned trilogy (its concluding volume, Secrets, appeared here alone in 1998). One senses autobiographical resonance in the storys concentration on Askar, a Somalian boy orphaned by his mothers death when she bore him and the loss of his father, a combat soldier serving in Somalias (197778) war against Ethiopia. Askars dilemmawhether to belong to his loving (Ethiopian) foster mother Misra or join the Somalian Liberation Front and emulate his fathers selfless courageis subtly explored in a tense narrative alive with local color thats both an affecting character study and a dramatic allegory of the confusions still plaguing a wounded and deeply conflicted society. One of the best novels out of Africa in some time. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

a book to come across a great story teller
By amateco
Personally , I found in this book a great writer who uses a second persona narrator to give the story a special turn. A book to read through the symbolism and metaphors. It shows the reality of countries where women are mistreated because different reasons, religion, culture. It is important to visualize a new tendency when the boy moved to Mogadiscio. A story told by dreams and symbols. Worth reading I believe Nuruddin Farah is a great story teller

A GREAT BOOK
By A Customer
I don't know a lot about African literature, and what I had read about Nurrudin Farah was a little intimidating, but this book was recommended to me by a friend who read it when it was first published in ENgland, and since then I've read the whole Blood in theSun trilogy (Gifts and Secrets follow). The books have taught me a lot about Africa and Somalia especially. But this book is, quite simply, a great novel, regardless of what continent it comes from. Farah writes like no other author I have ever encountered: he really makes the language come alive in a very special way. I'm convinced he's one of the most brilliant writers alive today.

Everything you wanted to know about growing-up...
By G. Cingal (cingal@clipper.ens.fr)
This is one of the major contemporary African novels to date. Its author, the Somalian English-speaking writer Nuruddin Farah, has been in exile since 1975, because he opposed Siyad Barre's military regime. Since Barre's eviction from power and death, Farah has chosen to stay abroad. The novel was published in 1986 and comes first in a trilogy that also includes GIFTS (1992) and SECRETS (1998). It is the story of a young orphan, named Askar ("soldier" or "arm-bearer" in Somali), who, as he thinks, killed his mother at his birth. During his infancy and early childhood, he shares everything (except his dreams) with his foster-mother, a woman of Oromo origin named Misra. In Kallafo, where he stays until the age of seven, he is happy and at one with Misra. Then, because of the different political problems that threaten Ogaden (the Ethiopian area mostly inhabited by Somali speakers and claimed by Somalia as its own), he is sent to the Somalian capital, Mogadiscio, where he lives with his maternal uncle, Hilaal, and his uncle's wife, Salaado. There, he tends to become a fierce patriot, though his moods are moderated by the presence of his uncle and his aunt, two loving but demanding intellectuals. At the age of 17, Askar sees Misra again. This is during the 1977 war in the Ogaden, and Askar has been misled into thinking that Misra betrayed Somali patriots. The whole story is told by three different voices, each of which the third case, the tale is more "objective", with Askar being referred to as a classical novel character ("he"). On the whole, Askar's dilemmas and split personality make up a deeply felt and immensely rewarding work of fiction. As the end shows, there is always fiction in life, but perhaps not the way you would expect it

The Vanishing American Outhouse, by Ronald S. Barlow

An irresistibly illustrated treasure of Americana no one can afford to be without

The universal appeal of The Vanishing American Outhouse hardly needs stating. Privately published, its single-copy sales through word of mouth have reached 50,000 and garnered rave reviews in periodicals ranging from The Old-House Journal to The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post.

This history of this "necessary house," an endangered species, addresses every aspect of its development and nature as a fundamental of folk architecture. Rich in technical detail (including blueprints for building your own outhouse, should the need arise), it ranges from the most rudimentary wooden structure to a turreted wonder with multiple doors. Brimming with amusing anecdotes, traditional verses, and rare postcards, a superlative gift or coffee-table item, The Vanishing American Outhouse is destined for pride of place on the bathroom bookshelf.

From Library Journal
More low-brow folk humor than serious examination of the crescent-mooned outdoor facilities that were indispensable for centuries, this heavily illustrated and anecdotal miscellany of illustrations, jokes, stories, cartoons, plans, and lavatorial lore will be more at home on the shelves of hillbilly tourist shops than libraries. Twenty-five short, disjointed sections are followed by a two-page bibliography of similar popular titles. Reprints of three historic government pamphlets on outhouse construction take up the last third of the work. Captions are frequently scatological; a photo of an old double decker with "Faculty" above and "Students" below may resonate with academics. The book was first self-published in 1992, and Viking has done little in the way of revision. A more presentable and informative guide is Dottie Booth's Nature Calls (Ten Speed, 1998).

Wonderful book
By Max
I bought this book when it came out as a gift for my father's birthday, he always talked about the outhouse outside his school, from when he was growing up.

The book is humorous, but also a very interesting, and a touching look back at a different time in our history. My father got a kick out of it, but really, everybody that picked it up to thumb through it, couldn't put it down.

Wonderful & mysterious adventures with King Arthur's knights
By A Customer
I read this book when I was in fifth grade and I was thoroughly entranced with the tale of King Arthur's knights and their adventures as they searched for the Holy Grail. There are some unfamiliar words in the book, but the story is not confusing or hard to follow. However, the writing is somewhat dense and may leave some people bored. Though I loved this book when I was in fifth grade, I had a hard time re-reading it when I was older because I felt the writing was too slow.
The book mainly follows three knights of the Round Table on their separate searches for the Holy Grail, so each chapter tells about a different episode in one of the knight's quests. There are plenty of haunting and mysterious scenes here to intrigue anyone. One of the most beautiful parts of the story is the description of Sir Lancelot meeting Sir Galahad.
This book is the second in a trilogy; the first one is THE SWORD AND THE CIRCLE, which tells of how King Arthur comes to his throne and also includes many other Arthurian legends, such as Sir Gawain and the Loathely Lady. It leads up to the Quest for the Holy Grail, which is the story of this book. The last book in the trilogy is THE ROAD TO CAMLAAN which tells about the end of Camelot. All three books are very good re-tellings of the King Arthur stories, though I think this one is the best of the trilogy.

Not the same elements as in the first book, but still good
By peter (peter@aol.com)
The Light Beyond the Forest is a good book, as are the other books in the trilogy. Though it doesn't have the same elements as in The Sword and the Circle, it suits the story, which isn't about kings, knights, and ladies, but man's search for God. Once again, Sutcliff is great at getting the feel of the period. I highly recommend this book and the entire trilogy.

The Quest for the Holy Grail

The Quest for the Holy Grail
The Light Beyond the Forest by Rosemary Sutcliff had an extremely interesting plot. The reader follows the quest for the holy grail in four different characters. Sutcliffe jumps back and forth between the quests of Sir Percival, Sir Bors, Sir Galahad and Sir Lancelot.
The time of the setting is in the medevil age. It takes place in many locations throughout the story. There are a few suspenseful twists that will keep you waiting until the end. Throughout the quest many conflicts appear between the characters and the grail.
Finally, I would recommend this book for 13+. Although it is not very long it can be confusing and hard to understand at times. This book is great for adventurous readers because of its plot and conflicts

The Girl in the Picture: The Story of Kim Phuc, the Photograph, and the Vietnam War, by Denise Chong

On June 8, 1972, nine-year-old Kim Phuc, severely burned by napalm, ran from her blazing village in South Vietnam and into the eye of history. Her photograph-one of the most unforgettable images of the twentieth century-was seen around the world and helped turn public opinion against the Vietnam War.

This book is the story of how that photograph came to be-and the story of what happened to that girl after the camera shutter closed. Award-winning biographer Denise Chong's portrait of Kim Phuc-who eventually defected to Canada and is now a UNESCO spokesperson-is a rare look at the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese point-of-view and one of the only books to describe everyday life in the wake of this war and to probe its lingering effects on all its participants.

Amazon.com Review
When Nick Ut photographed 9-year-old Kim Phuc running down a road, her body aflame with napalm, he turned a terrified girl into a living symbol of the Vietnam War's horror. Even after the war, the North Vietnamese government made the severely scarred Kim a reluctant poster girl for American atrocities. Although her parents, once relatively prosperous South Vietnamese peasants, were reduced to dire poverty when the state took over her mother's noodle shop, Kim was allowed to receive further medical treatment in Germany, to visit the Soviet Union, and to attend the University of Havana. These privileges did not assuage her spiritual turmoil: Why had she been singled out for fame when so many others suffered and died? Searching for answers, Kim converted to Christianity and in 1992 defected with her husband to Canada, where they now live with their two sons. Canadian author Denise Chong's sensitive biography, which doubles as a fascinating social history of Vietnam during and after the war, captures Kim as a complex woman of powerful religious faith: "It was the fire of bombs that burned my body. It was the skill of doctors that mended my skin. But it took the power of God's love to heal my heart." --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
All you have to do is say "the girl in the picture" and any American who was politically aware during the Vietnam War will conjure up the image of a little Vietnamese girl running down the road, her naked body scorched by napalm, her face contorted in pain. That photograph, taken of a girl named Kim Phuc on June 8, 1972, by Nick Ut of the Associated Press, remains a haunting image of the American war in Vietnam. Canadian writer Chong (The Concubine's Children) now tells Phuc's story in this instructive authorized biography. Tracing Phuc's life both before and after she was nearly killed (at age nine) by a South Vietnamese air force napalm strike gone wrong, Chong unblinkingly presents graphic depictions of the horrors that the war visited on innocent civilians. She finds, however, amidst these tragedies, a redemptive story in Phuc's life, which, thankfully, has a happy ending. Through the heroic efforts of Nick Ut, British correspondent Christopher Wain and others, the girl was taken to an excellent hospital in Saigon. Through 17 operations (in 24 months), an international team of doctors saved her life. Later, after communist authorities mercilessly used her for propaganda purposes, she fled Vietnam. Today, she and her husband are Christians, living in Ontario with their two sons. Although Phuc's entire back remains deeply scarred (keeping her in near constant pain), she works as an unpaid goodwill ambassador for UNESCO and runs her own foundation for child victims of war. Chong's biography, though overly detailed at times, is a well-rendered and affecting life story. 8 pages of b&w photos. (Aug.)

From Library Journal
The horrors suffered by villagers during the Vietnam War were encapsulated in the unforgettable, Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of nine-year-old Kim Phuc running naked and screaming in agony from a blast of napalm dropped by a South Vietnamese fighter plane. Chong (The Concubine's Children) presents the story of Phuc's miraculous recovery and the memorable life of the war victim always to be remembered as "the girl in the picture." Phuc's spent 13 months recovering from third-degree burns that covered 35 percent of her body. She later became a good student, but her dream of becoming a doctor was never realized because of the celebrity status given to her by the victorious Communists. Prime Minister Dong treated Phuc like a granddaughter, allowing her to attend the University of Havana in Cuba, far away from the demands of the Vietnamese government. Phuc realized that Cuba, which had fallen on economic hard times once its economic sponsor, the Soviet Union pulled out, offered no promise of a future. In 1992, she escape to Canada,d two sons. An important story vividly retold; highly recommended for all public libraries.

A remarkable book that looks behind the myths.
By A Customer
The photo of Kim Phuc running in terror from a napalm attack is one of the best-known images of the Vietnam War. This book looks behind the photo to tell the story of an ordinary peasant thrust into the spotlight and how her life was forever changed by the click of a camera. It reveals how Kim Phuc was used as a propoganda tool by the Vietnamese and how she escaped to a new life in Canada. And it offers fascinating insights into how journalists covered the war how that one photo also changed the life of the photographer who took it.
A previous review suggests it is more fiction than fact, yet it's unclear how the reviewer could come to that conclusion about a book that hasn't yet been released. Disclosure: I know Denise Chong and have actually read an early copy. She tears down some of the myths the reviewer suggests are being perpetrated. Chong makes it clear the attack was not done by Americans and was a mistake. And she also raises questions about the role of the American soldier who claimed responsibility for the attack.
This book offers fascinating insights into ordinary life in Vietnam during the war and Kim Phuc's later odyssey through Cuba and Moscow to Canada. During her research trips to Vietnam, Chong's eye for detail, which came across so clearly in "The Concubine's Children," again brings a story to life. The account of the napalm attack itself and Kim's recovery from such horrible burns is a heart-wrenching drama that will bring many readers to tears. This is one of the must-read books of the year.

Fascinating, Entertaining while gaining insight & understanding. One of the best books Ever
By Inventing Joy
Audio book. A must read for those who were there, those who were not there & anyone who wants to understand & gain a insight into history.while being entertained . I put this up there as one of the best I've ever read/heard. Although I lived the Vietnam war (at the end of the underground), this is the first time I gained any understanding of it. (Not that I've ever understood any war) The story is fascinating. Probably the only book I've read more than once. The writer is fabulous & she is an amazing actress. It gives insight on the plight of the peasants in a gripping page turner. The story of this little girl who we saw on the front pages back in the day is fascinating. That it is a true story, yet reads like a novel is amazing. No spoiler here but you need to read to the end to find out what ultimately happened to this precious little girl.

Heartrending
By murni@murnis.com
You don't really enjoy a book like this. It's a story of almost unremitting suffering. I found the story riveting, well written and troubling. Of course, I knew the picture and I'd seen the documentary when I was in England several years ago, but the details in the book and the evident research provide a much deeper understanding.
It is a very human story, the suffering of one girl in particular, but also her family, and she is one of many. The book gives a concise account of the historical background to the bombing. It will serve as a good introduction to those that do not know about these events, and will be useful for visitors to Vietnam.
The author also narrates the stories of members of Kim Phuc's family and their struggle for existence during those hard times. I've been to Vietnam, including Saigon, not far from where the awful atrocity took place, so I feel a closeness to the place. I saw the famous photograph in the American War Crimes Museum (now renamed) in Saigon.
My life in Bali cannot compare to Kim Phuc's, but I understand a little some of her family's difficulties - the paranoid fear of Communism in the 1960s (there was an alleged Communist coup in Indonesia in 1965), the hard work involved in running a small restaurant (I started mine from scratch in 1974 just like Kim's mother did) and the hassles of dealing with officials (the author describes these well).
It is doubly distressing that Kim Phuc was so cruelly used and cheated by others for their own purposes. Governments, officials, journalists. One can only have contempt for them and wish Kim Phuc a better life in Canada.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone. It has 370 pages and there are several pages of photographs.

The Disciplined Mind: Beyond Facts and Standardized Tests, the K-12 Education that Every Child Deserves, by Howard Gardner

In The Disciplined Mind, Howard Gardner argues that K-12 education should strive for a deep understanding of three classical principles: truth, beauty, and goodness. Such an understanding requires mastery of the major disciplines that human beings have created over the centuries. As powerful examples of his approach, Gardner describes an education that illuminates the theory of evolution, the music of Mozart, and the lessons of the Holocaust. Far from the standardized test mentality that has gripped both policy makers and the public, Gardner envisions an education that preserves the strengths of a traditional humane education while preparing younger generations for the challenges of the future.

Review
A must-read for every educator, parent or anyone who cares about our children's future. (Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence) -- The New York Times Book Review

From the Back Cover
WHAT -- AND HOW -- SHOULD WE BE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN?

In The Disciplined Mind, Howard Gardner, the brilliant educator who revolutionized our thinking with his theory of multiple intelligences, offers a controversial and far-reaching work on the goals of education. His argument -- aimed at parents, educators, and the general public alike -- is that K-12 education should enhance a deep understanding of three principles: truth, beauty, and goodness. Gardner explores how teaching students three subjects -- the theory of evolution, the music of Mozart, and the lessons of the Holocaust -- would illuminate the nature of truth, beauty, and morality.

Far from the fact-based, standardized-test mentality that has gripped both policy makers and the public, Gardner envisions an educational system that will help younger generations rise to the challenges of the future, while preserving the traditional goals of a "humane" education.

About the Author

He is a leading thinker about education and human development; he has studied and written extensively about intelligence, creativity, leadership, and professional ethics. Gardner's Rolling Stone
By Mark Valentine
Fortunately for readers (and anyone connected to education), Gardner has not been idle since he first published his benchmark book Frames of Mind. I sincerely appreciated reading how he has continued to develop his thinking in cognitive psychology and his suggestions for education need to be taken seriously as a blueprint for change. Along with Postman, Kohn, Ravitch, Darling-Hammond, Allen, and Perrone, Gardner takes the position that education relates cultural values as much as anything. Further, those values need to engage the student in sustained, meaningful encounters in science, art, and narrative that produce a vigorous, cognitive growth. His candid suggestions for educators to assimilate units on truth, beauty, and goodness suggest that Gardner is not only willing to make a radical suggestions for the advancement of learning among children (in the spirit of Dewey and Bruner), but also that the humanitarian interests in education are worth sustaining; that is, for Gardner, meaning needs to take ascendency in our instruction.
Gardner is a fantastic writer. He has a gift for explanation and explication; I recommend the book if only for the Appendix. He delineates between two world views in education and it is worth the price of the book itself.
Yes, his suggestions are radical and extreme, but being normal is only taking education down to a new nadir. I heartily endorse this book.

A New Golden Standard for the Educated Person
By Donald Mitchell
In previous books, Professor Gardner has introduced us to important concepts like multiple intelligences (Frames of Mind) and how little university graduates can make practical application of anything they learn (The Unschooled Mind). In The Disciplined Mind, he takes those concepts and combines them to define a minimum educational standard: Introducing students to the thought processes of major disciplines to appreciate important issues from the perspective of multiple intelligences.

To exemplify the point, Professor Gardner develops examples of his concept involving Darwin's Finches (as a window on evolutionary thinking), one scene from The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (as a window onto social commentary and music) and the Wannsee Conference in Nazi Germany (as a window onto the banal evil of the Holocaust). He sees the fundamental questions that education should address as following into the subjects of truth, beauty and goodness (or good versus evil) which these three examples epitomize.

Those sections were great fun, but the most valuable part of the book comes in chapter 10 where he addresses "Getting There". It's a marvelous description of how to create positive organizational change within education. Professor Gardner gets tough in pointing out that good leadership is essential. Otherwise, multidisciplinary means just messing around with whatever appeals to you . . . and not learning a darn thing of lasting importance.

I can relate to that point. One of my first college courses was intended to teach us the historical discipline by working with primary sources about the Entresol Club in France before the Revolution. But the case didn't really work for that purpose and the leadership was muddled. The only thing I learned was the entresol was the floor above the ground floor in a French building. That has helped me in elevators several times since then. But I had to learn the historical discipline elsewhere.

He points out several key lessons:

Have a long-term perspective

Be flexible and seek small victories

Anticipate setbacks and be prepared for them

Allow time for reflection

Build on strengths

Pay attention to implicit messages in the institutional culture

Create a community that cares

Visit and be visited

Cultivate new energies

Commit yourself to the process of change

I was reminded of Peter Senge's excellent book, The Dance of Change, as I read this section.

The next best part of the book came in chapter 9 where Professor Gardner explained how multiple intelligences can be brought to bear for understanding.

This material is a classic for introducing any important subject:

1. Provide powerful points of entry that engage students.

2. Offer apt analogies to make the material accessible.

3. Deliver multiple representations of the core ideas of the topic that capture each of the multiple intelligences.

Many of the people who have been honored with the MacArthur Prize Fellowship (the so-called Genius award) fail to impress me as being geniuses. Professor Gardner is the happy exception to that observation. This book is a marvelous summation of his perspective and how to bridge the unsatisfying gap between classical "memorize everything" education to produce the "whole person" and the pressure now to produce highly functional "specialists" who are ignorant outside their specialties.

Bravo, Professor Gardner!

Howard Gardner has remarkable insights about what schools should be doing. He discusses some things a rookie teacher such as myself has barely given thought to. I now have a better vision of what I should be doing as a teacher and how to manage the various agendas that are pushed on teachers from every direction. I give four, maybe five stars for Gardner's insights but because this was such a tedious read, cannot give the final product the same rating. Educators have much to gain by reading this book but will need patience if they hope to read it cover to cover.
